The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Tuesday confirmed the death of two persons following the explosion of a petrol tanker at Umunya Junction on the Onitsha-Awka expressway in Anambra.

FRSC’s Sector Commander in Anambra, Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, confirmed the incident in Awka.

Irelewuyi said attributed the accident, which occurred at 10.00a.m. to speeding.

“The fatal crash involved an unidentified driver of a Mack tanker with no registration number, which was laden with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and a shuttle bus, with no registration number.

“According to an eyewitness account, the tanker driver was on speed, lost control, and rammed into the shuttle bus from behind. It crashed and exploded, and both vehicles caught fire.

“The crash involved five male adults. Two were killed, including one that was burnt beyond recognition.

“Police personnel from Oyi Division in Nteje were invited and the dead victims were handed over to them by the FRSC team from Nteje Unit Command,” he said.

The sector commander noted that the state’s fire service had put off the fire, adding that the FRSC rescue team were still on ground managing traffic and ensuring that the obstruction caused by the crash was removed.

While commiserating with the families of the dead, Irelewuyi warned motorists to avoid speeding and ensure they keep to the recommended speed limit.

“Speed thrills but kills; check your speed and not your watch. Let us keep our roads safe from accidents,” he said.

UPDATED: Scores feared killed, houses burnt as tanker explodes in Lagos

In the early hours of today, a tanker said to be loaded with petrol has crashed and exploded at Ajegunle Bus-Stop, Alagbado, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Several houses, among other property, were said to have been burnt in the fire, as men of the state fire service and the police were deployed in the area.

The Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye said the inferno resulted from the spillage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

The statement said,” Reports of the incident got to the service at 2 .16 a.m on Friday.

“The accident occurred when a 45,000 litres PMS capacity tanker wanted to negotiate a bend on the highway as it was on its way to serve a Petrol station.

“The spillage spread to the roadsides and the residents started to scoop the PMS, this nefarious activity ensured the fire outbreak.

“These people risked their lives, the service has warned residents severally, never to scoop PMS. However, the situation has been brought under control by the fire fighting crews”, the statement said.

Adeseye said that emergency responders were still at the scene to ensure that all hindrances to free movement and wreckage of the tanker were removed promptly.

She assured the public that the situation was under control as the process of mopping up and evacuation of the remains of the fire was ongoing.

Adeseye added that the public should also exercise caution and restraint as outbound Lagos traffic had been diverted to travel alongside the inbound vehicular traffic.

[Video] Petrol, diesel storage tanks explode in Niger

A fire outbreak on Monday engulfed a building in Javino, an area of Gauraka in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger.

Some eyewitnesses said the inferno was caused by activities at the building where fuel was stored illegally.

With fuel scarcity in the country, the owner of the goods was said to also store diesel in tanks for sale to customers as ‘black market’.

According to eyewitness, the owner at about 6:35am attempted to use a pumping machine to fill an iron keg leading to the fire outbreak.

The fire rose to consume other tanks containing fuel and diesel, a few shops around and the roof of a building under construction.

After about 30 minutes of inferno, the Niger State Fire Service arrived at the scene to salvage the situation but ran out of water shortly after.

A private organisation, Empire Energy Limited that was close by, were alerted and arrived with their fire truck and helped quench the fire completely.

Linda Albert, one of the eyewitnesses, wants the dealers of such goods taken away from residential area.

“Early this morning, we heard fire and we came out it was really a bad sight but we thank God that the fire is out.

“If the government can help us take these people away from here. This is a residential area and imagine if this fire incident started in the night, lives would have been lost,” Albert said.

STRIKE: NUPENG demands rehabilitation of 21 critical highways

Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers, NUPENG, has said it will not give further warning to embark on industrial action, if the N621bn provided by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited for the rehabilitation of 21 critical highways is not utilized.

In NUPENG words “On the basis of this communique, the union suspended the intended industrial action, but we were very clear in our statement, that should the spirit and letter of the agreement not fully implemented with a focus on those jointly identified critical roads or attempt is made to divert the funds, the union will not give further warning to resume the intended actions.”

This was declared in a statement jointly signed by the union’s President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Olawale Afolabi.

NUPENG noted that it had started mobilizing members of the union for the sudden strike.

According to NUPENG, officials of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (FMWH) were currently diverting the N621bn provided by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited for the rehabilitation of 21 critical highways.

NUPENG noted that roads rehabilitation pictures being brandished by the FMWH were photographs that were taken before the N621bn was approved.

The Union pointed out that agreements reached on the matter with the government and other stakeholders in two separate meetings were not upheld.

The officials of the Ministry of Works and Housing are going around showing pictures of roads done in June and August 2021 to justify payment made from the N621bn which was approved in October 2021 for the identified 21 critical roads

The statement read in part, “These two meetings resulted in the signing of a communique indicating the readiness and willingness of NNPC to finance the rehabilitation of identified 21 critical roads at an estimated sum of N621bn through road infrastructure tax credit scheme.

“Unfortunately, our worst fear concerning the struggle is gradually unfolding with information coming out from reliable sources that some elements in the garbs of being state governments, officials of Ministry of Works and Housing, and desperate politicians are already dipping their soiled hands into these funds and diverting them to roads already budgeted for and done since last year.”

The officials of the Ministry of Works and Housing are going around showing pictures of roads done in June and August 2021 to justify payment made from the N621bn which was approved in October 2021 for the identified 21 critical roads.

“We have our facts and figures, and we shall not be cowed into allowing the N621bn to go the same way other budgeted funds have gone.”

The union demanded the immediate halt to the further release of the fund until a competent monitoring and validation team comprising all stakeholders that signed the communique was formed.

It demanded that the pre-award pictures of the 21 identified roads be taken, which would be compared with pictures of post repairs/reconstruction.

“The N621bn was approved because of our demand and struggle, therefore, we owe our members and the general public the responsibility to ensure that every kobo of the approved fund is accounted for. Taxpayers’ money must be accounted for. We demand immediate review of transport freight rates to reflect the operational realities of the petroleum distribution value chain,” NUPENG stated.

The Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State, Florence Okpe, confirmed the accidents.

She attributed the first accident to dangerous driving and wrongful overtaking on the part of the petrol tanker.

Okpe explained that the tanker, which was on top speed, collided with the truck, which was travelling from Lagos to Ibadan, while trying to overtake.

She said, “A total of five persons were burnt beyond recognition. They were recovered from one of the crashed trucks and deposited at the FOS Morgue, Ipara.”

She added that the second accident involved two vehicles: a Mazda bus, marked SKN135 XA, and a Range Rover, with number plate, 345DCT.

Okpe noted that the bus, which was coming from Ibadan, skidded off the road to the other lane and collided with the Range Rover, which was coming from Lagos.

  • Drivers license: Reps task FRSC, VIO to apply stringent measures against tanker drivers

Drivers license: Reps task FRSC, VIO to apply stringent measures against tanker drivers

The House of Representatives has tasked the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and States Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) to apply stringent measures against unlicensed tanker and trailer drivers in the country.

The call followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Ben Igbakpa (PDP-Delta) at Tuesday’s plenary in Abuja.

Speaking on the motion, Igbakpa said that there was need to assess the vehicle licensing process in the country.

He said that FRSC, State VIOs and the States Boards of Internal Revenue (BIR) were agencies responsible for vehicle licensing.

He said that driving articulated vehicles required special skills and knowledge of traffic laws and regulations, adding that many drivers of articulated vehicles were not qualified to operate them.

Igbakpa said that many of them were not licensed and lacked the requisite skills to drive thus resulting in fatal accidents.

He said that minimum safety requirements demanded that operators of the articulated vehicles conformed to road transport safety standardisation scheme and registration of companies.

He said that all tankers, tractors and trailers and any other form of an articulated vehicle including those conveying dangerous goods were required to comply with the guidelines on safe operations.

According to him, Lagos State University (LASU) and the Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) have accredited curriculum that will be used for the training.

“And also certification of driving training team to train drivers of articulated vehicles is important,” he said.

According to him, most tanker drivers are young adults who can neither speak nor write in English, adding that when issued licenses, they endanger other road users, contrary to the FRSC registration.

He said that the registration process mandated tanker, tractor and trailer transport services and operators to register their transport companies with the FRSC.

Igbakpa said that the proliferation of uncertified driving schools issuing driving certificates to untrained drivers often resulted in producing inexperience drivers thereby causing accidents.

The House therefore urged FRSC to compel tanker/tractor–trailer transport services/operators to disclose the type of heavy–duty vehicles business operation they were engaged in and register with the FRSC.

It also urged FRSC to stipulate stringent administrative procedures for tankers/trailers operations in the country for first time articulated vehicles operators and applicants for FRSC registration.
