  • UPDATED: Loaded tanker falls, explodes, wreaks havoc in Festac [Video/Photos]

    A major disaster happened this morning at about 11.05 am when a 33,000-litre petrol tanker climbing the Festac link bridge lost compression, rolled back and fell.

    It soon after caught fire after about five minutes and exploded with huge balls of fire.

    The ensuing flame, assisted by the dry harmattan haze, soon spread wild into the nearby car park, where second-hand cars were being sold.

    The tanker, while rolling back had crushed some two tricycles and a danfo bus, before the balls of fire enveloped the entire precinct. It was not certain at at press time if lives were lost the inferno. Some occupants of the danfo bus were seeing weeping saying the “fire burnt all my goods loaded into the danfo”.

    There were intermittent sounds of explosions accompanied by balls of fire from the burning tanker and displayed vehicles.

    When TheNewsGuru.com visited the scene, over 25 exotic cars had been burnt while efforts were being made to rescue many others from the flaming park by pushing them out of the park.

    The burnt carcasses of motorcycles, tricycle and different vehicles are testimonies of the severity of the fire.

    After about an hour of untamed flame, the federal fire service truck arrived and combated the rage of the fire, but soon ran out of water, and so became helpless, while the fire raged on.

    About another hour later, the Lagos state fire service arrived, accompanied by independent water tankers.

    The chairman of the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Mr. Valentine Braimoh, who rushed to the scene with senior members of his council, l bemoaned the incident. He could not confirm if any life was lost.

    “We cannot confirm that (loss of lives) now, until this mess is cleared”, Braimoh said.

    The accident which attracted the huge crowd, was being controlled by police and LASTMA officials.

    The road was barricaded to other road users, causing a long queue of drivers.

    The flame was yet burning at the time of this report while the firefighters were yet battling to put it out.

    No fewer than 25 people have just lost their lives in a fatal accident that occurred in Kogi State involving a tanker conveying fuel and an eighteen seater bus coming from the North.

    The accident which occurred between Felele-Okene Abuja Road at about 1:30 pm on Friday saw residents of the area scampering for safety.

    According to a report by Daily Post, as at 2:05 pm, officers of the Fire Service were yet to arrive at the scene.

    However, when they came at about 2:20 pm to salvage the situation, they could only help for a few minutes as their water got finished while fighting the raging fire.

    Several unidentified bodies were seen lying lifeless on the ground at the scene of the inferno.

    Equally consumed in the inferno were about 10 cars parked by the road side.

    Sympathizers watching helplessly expressed shock and blamed the bad nature of the road for the accident.

    An eyewitness, Bawasa Ibrahim said two tricycle rider popularly called Keke Napep were equally burnt in the accident.

    ” The tanker and the eighteen seater bus were trying to overtake each other. But unfortunately, the tanker lost balance and it fell on the bus.

    “We have been complaining to the government to fix this road. Now you can see how many lives that have been lost. No fewer than 25 burnt bodies can be seen here.” Ibrahim added.

    Another eyewitness, Haruna Sadiq who sympathize with families of those who lost their lives said they have been calling the fire authority for more 20 minute but they claimed there was no fuel in their vehicle.

    ” I am really disappointed with our firemen. We have been calling them that people are dying here, but all we could hear is that they don’t have fuel. What a shame.” he lamented.

    He, however, appealed to the government to do the needful, stating that a similar accident happened in this same spot where lives were also lost.

    As at the time of filing this report, the fire is still on.

    TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kogi State Command is yet to issue any official statement to confirm the accident.

  • 14 die as tanker collides with commercial bus in Osun

    No fewer than 14 persons have been reported dead in a ghastly tanker and bus collision in Ile-Ife, Osun State on Sunday.

    Witnesses say the dead, who were consumed in the inferno, include women and children.

    The accident was said to have occurred at about 12 noon in front of a fuel station, few metres away from the popular Mayfair roundabout.

    An 18-seater commercial bus heading from Ondo State to Ibadan collided with a diesel-filled tanker that was negotiating a U-turn on the way, witnesses said.

    It was learnt that on collision, the bus burst into flames, burning most of the passengers beyond recognition.

    Witnesses told journalists that the extent of damage resulted from the delayed arrival of rescue teams to the accident spot.

    The bus was also carrying heavy metal objects which further propelled the bus and caused serious injuries to the passengers upon the collision before the bus caught fire.

    Only two passengers were said to have been rescued and taken alive to a nearby private hospital.

    The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Osun State, Anthony Oko, confirmed the incident.

    No fewer than 14 persons were burnt to death,” he said.

    The driver of the tanker was nowhere to be found, as he exited the truck and left as soon as the accident occurred.
