Tanzania plane crash survivors, rescuers narrate ordeal

When the waters of Lake Victoria started gushing into the cabin of Flight PW494, passenger Mectrida Samuel knew she had to act fast.

Around her, others were frantically trying to free themselves and keep above the fast-rising water.

“We had a big crash and I immediately started seeing water enter the plane. Passengers started to struggle to rescue themselves,” Samuel said, describing the moments after the Precision Air flight to Bukoba plunged into the lake in northern Tanzania.

“The only thing that helped me survive was that I managed to remove my seat belt and get out of the seat on time.”

Minutes earlier, the twin turboprop with 43 people on board had hit a thunderstorm carrying heavy rain and powerful downdrafts.

A witness saw the plane flying unsteadily in poor visibility when it took a turn for the airport but missed, careering into the lake at 8:53 a.m. (0553 GMT).

The Tanzanian authorities are yet to determine the causes of the crash.

In the hours and days after the accident, reports of survival and dramatic rescue efforts started to emerge.

The two pilots survived the impact and remained in touch with rescue workers from the cockpit for a couple of hours, a local administrator said, before reporting that their oxygen supply was dwindling.

Onlookers, including fisherman Majaliwa Jackson, rushed to the semi-submerged aircraft to help pull out trapped passengers.

Jackson dived into the water and managed to communicate with the pilots by signalling through the window, he told the BBC.

The pilots directed him to try and smash the windscreen, but an official told him not to, he said.

He dived into the water a final time and waved goodbye.

Video footage of the scene shows fishing boats and people on the shore trying to drag the plane out of the water with ropes tied to the tail fin.

Crash survivor Samuel had managed to swim towards the back of the aircraft, where one of the cabin crew members helped open the emergency door, she said.

“After a few minutes, local fishermen came to rescue us,” she said.

By the time rescue workers reached the pilots, their air supply had run out and the pair were dead, authorities said.

Another man, who had been returning from his niece’s wedding in another part of the country was also amongst the dead, according to his relative Alfred Tibaigana.

“We have received this tragedy of our loving relative with great sadness,” Tibaigana told Reuters.

At a ceremony in a sports stadium in Bukoba town on Monday, relatives, religious leaders, and government officials filed past the coffins of the 19 people who perished in the incident, each decorated with flowers and a photograph of the deceased.

The government said it will reward Jackson, who had tried in vain to rescue the pilots, for his bravery with 1 million Tanzanian shillings ($430) and hire him as a first responder.

As a motivation for the under 23 Olympic Eagles Team to make Nigeria proud by defeating Tanzania, Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, has announced the cash gift N10 million to the Nigerian team ahead of Saturday game.

Makinde, who promised to be at the Lekan Salami Stadium on Saturday to cheer the players up, also promised additional 20,000 dollars (about N18 million) after victory.

He made the announcement of the cash gift on Friday night at a dinner hosted by the State Government for the team inside the Government House in Ibadan.

The second leg of the AFCON Qualifier would be played at Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan on Saturday.

The country’s U23 National Team and Tanzania had drew 1-1 during the first leg of the match held in Dar es Salam, the capital of Tanzania.

NAN reports that it was the first time since 1999 that football lovers in the ancient city of Ibadan would enjoy the best of international football.

The governor described sport as a means of development in the state, saying they knew what it meant for youths in terms of money, motivation and development of the state.

“At any time, we would be willing to host NFF. I enjoy watching football and Shooting Star is the first team from this country to win the continental African Cup.

“I want to wish you well and let you know that we are fully behind you. I am supporting you with N10 million right now and using my own ways of motivating you”.

“You will win the match and I will keep my promise to you as well. The game promises to be exciting, so let’s show them what we’re made of,” he said.

Also, the Chairman, National Youth Teams, Alhaji Aminu Balele, urged the team to win the game for President Muhammadu Buhari, the Minister of Sports and Nigeria.

He then gave the team Head Coach, Salisu Yusuf, 10,000 dollars to ensure that the team wins the game.

NAN reports that the Dream Team, who are being massively backed by their football loving fans, have vowed to finish off their Tanzanian opponents.

For the Nigerians to progress to the next round, they needed a scoreless draw or an outright victory in today’s game.

However, the task might not be easy for the Dream Team as the Tanzanian Team Manager, Ahmed Maroko, had threatened to create an upset.

“We are here to win and we will do everything possible to accomplish our mission,”the Tanzanian Sweat Merchant said.

With the Tanzanians driven by personal determination, the home team’s spirits are buoyed by promises of cash splash from sports loving compatriots.

With the spirits of the Dream Team lifted up by imminent naira rains, the Nigerians might go for a harvest of goals today.

Supporter hangs Labour Party flag atop Mount Kilimanjaro

As political parties in Nigeria get set for the country’s 2023 general elections, a supporter of the Labour Party, LP, has climbed Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, to hang the party’s flag.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world.

Twitter user, @OGersh, who shared a picture of himself at Uhuru Peak, next to the Labour Party flag on Tuesday, October 25, said it took him 10 and a half hours to get to the top of the mountain.

He tweeted; “On Fri, 20/10/2022 after 10½ hrs of climbing, hiking and trekking, I made it to the Uhuru Peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, 5,895m above sea level. There is no better place to announce the coming of a New Nigeria than the Rooftop of Africa.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level and about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) above its plateau base. It is the highest volcano in Africa and the Eastern Hemisphere.

Kilimanjaro is the fourth most topographically prominent peak on Earth. It is part of Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major hiking and climbing destination. Because of its shrinking glaciers and ice fields, which are projected to disappear between 2025 and 2035, it has been the subject of many scientific studies.

The origin of the name Kilimanjaro is not known, but a number of theories exist. European explorers had adopted the name by 1860 and reported that Kilimanjaro was the mountain’s Kiswahili name. The 1907 edition of The Nuttall Encyclopædia also records the name of the mountain as Kilima-Njaro.

Paris 2024: Tanzania force Olympic Eagles to 1-1 draw

Two penalties, one in each half and at opposing sides, guaranteed that Saturday’s Africa U23 Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Tanzania in Dar es Salaam ended in a 1-1 draw.

Captain Success Makanjuola netted for Nigeria in the 29th minute, after Qudus Akanni was fouled in the hosts’ vital area, and the 1996 champions thereafter created a number of chances that with a little more precision, would have put the match to bed by half time.

The home team piled on the pressure in the second period at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, and hit the crossbar on two occasions before Djiboutian referee Souleiman Ahmed Djama awarded them a penalty that was brilliantly converted in the 74th minute.

The Olympic Eagles fought tenaciously to earn a winner, with their minds on the $20,000 pledge for victory by the Chairman of NFF’s task force for youth competitions, Alhaji Aminu Balele Kurfi, but it was not to be. However, the boys return to the country on Sunday with their heads held high and determined to finish off the task with success when they host the Tanzanians at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan on Saturday next week.

The winner on aggregate will proceed to the next round of the Africa U23 Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Africa U23 Cup of Nations to be held in Morocco in November 2023, will determine Africa’s flag bearers at the Men’s Football Tournament of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Kizz Daniel tenders apology, announces free show in Tanzania

Nigerian singer, Oluwatobiloba Daniel, popularly known as Kizz Daniel has tendered an apology to his fans in Tanzania for failing to perform at a show in the country.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports tendered the apology at a press briefing on Tuesday while also promising a free show for his Tanzanian fans on Friday.

“The people were already going wild; the fans were going wild, which I know was out of love. So no disrespect to the fans… I was asked to stay back. ‘You can’t go’, ‘It’s not safe’.

“So I said ok. I sat down with the team, the organisers, the promoters; let’s come up with a way to make it up to the Tanzanian fans and we decided to do a makeup show for free.

“I even agreed to partner with them this time around. “This Friday, a free show; I will be partnering with Straight Up Vibes to make that happen.

“I must apologize to the fans. None of this was intentional,” the Buga crooner said.

Recall that Kizz Daniel was meant to perform at the Warehouse, Old Nextdoor Arena in Tanzania, on Sunday night, as part of his Afro Classic World Tour, but was absent.

His absence had sparked a huge controversy with the show promoter, Stephen Uwa saying he paid $60,000 to the music star and pleaded with him for over five hours to no avail.

“He only said the airline didn’t bring his bag. That is why he could not perform because his gold chain is not there and he had a gold chain on his neck. He wanted everything.

“I bought him different clothes but he said just because the airline didn’t bring one of his bags, he cannot perform without his gold on his neck,” Uwa had said.

The Tanzanian police then had him arrested over the incident, but the Nigerian government quickly intervened to have him released. All these seem to be put to rest now.

Kizz Daniel refused to perform over incomplete set of gold chains – show organiser

Organiser of the Summer Amplified concert which flopped on Sunday Stephen Uwa, has given his account of the event that led to the arrest of the ‘buga’ Corona Kizz Daniel on Monday.

In an interview with Daddy Freeze, Uwa, who is also a Nigerian, claimed the Singer refused to perform because he did not have his complete set of gold chains, which he had planned to wear for the event.

The show organiser explained that the airline which he traveled with failed to bring one of his bags which contained his gold chains and Kizz daniel insisted he could not perform without them, despite collecting $60, 000.

”He said the airline didn’t bring his bag that is why he cannot perform because his gold chain is not there and he had a gold chain on his neck. He wanted everything,” Uwa said.

He said he knelt down to beg the Nigerian Singer to help save his career as his company was only just making entrance into the entertainment market in Tanzania, but Kizz Daniel remained adamant.

“The table (regular) for that show was set for $5,000 and the highest table was set for $10,000. My company is new here.

“I paid this guy $60,000 to perform on this show. I kneel down on my knees (sic) bro you are damaging me. I’m a Nigerian, everybody thinks I defrauded them,” Uwa said.

Meanwhile, Kizz Daniel who was arrested after he failed to show up for the performance scheduled to hold at the Warehouse Arena on Sunday, has been released from the Oysterbay Police Station in Dar es Salaam.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed this in a tweet on Monday night.

“His legal team will however report back to the police tomorrow (today) while he will subsequently return back to Nigeria,” Dabiri-Erewa said.

This is not the first time the singer will fail to perform at a ticketed show. Exactly a month ago, he was humiliated on stage while performing at a concert in the United States.

In a video which surfaced online, fans were seen shouting and demanding for a refund of their money after the singer arrived some hours late for a concert.

In August 2019, the Afropop singer was called out for failing to turn up and perform at a concert in Montreal, Canada.

Kizz Daniel later clarified that the show organisers reneged on making full payment before his performance even though he was already on ground and efforts to reach an understanding did not yield positive result, leading to a cancellation of the show.

The Buga crooner was scheduled to perform at the Warehouse, Old Nextdoor Arena in Tanzania on Sunday night as part of his Afro Classic World Tour.
