U-17 AFCON: Eaglets beat hosts Tanzania in nine-goal thriller

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets won their opening match at the 13th Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 5-4 against hosts Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

It was a match which saw the hosts collapsing in the latter part of the match against the five-time world champions.

The Eaglets missed several scoring opportunities in a match they had in their hands but almost threw away due to sluggish marking, carelessness at the rear and slack finishing.

They could have been one goal up after 20 seconds of play but a poor shot by Olakunle Olusegun with the goal gaping was easily thwarted by goalkeeper Yahya Mwinyi.

There were more wastages, by Wisdom Ubani and Ayobami Amoo, before Olatomi Olaniyan put Nigeria in front in the 21st minute.

He booted into the net from a rebound after an initial effort was stopped by Mwinyi.

Tanzania replied straight from the restart, when Edmund John stroked past a badly-positioned goalkeeper Suleiman Shaibu, who showed little confidence all afternoon.

Eight minutes later, Nigeria regained their lead after Ubani latched onto a high pass, turned a defender before placing the ball to the far side of Mwinyi.

It was 3-1 seven minutes later, after the impressive Amoo skilfully rounded Mwinyi from a pass following a free-kick that was initially blocked.

The Eaglets were expected to start the second period from where they left off in the first, but they resorted to defending and duly collapsedin a manner unimaginable.

They were soon behind after conceding three goals in seven minutes against a side charged by crowd support.

The Nigerian side even encouraged them to launch onslaught after onslaught, through their act of sitting back.

Kelvin John scored a beauty with a 25–yard strike which Shaibu had no answer to, in the 52nd minute.

Two penalty kicks followed quickly, scored by Morice Abraham and Edmund John.

In the 65th minute, Olusegun headed straight at Mwinyi as Nigeria attacked, but Ubani equalised with a spectacular shot from a free-kick in the 72nd minute.

Six minutes later, Ibraheem Jabaar regained Nigeria’s lead with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box which Mwinyi’s flailing hands could not reach.

Victory took the Eaglets top of Group A ahead of the other clash between Angola and Uganda.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Eaglets will on Wednesday take on Angola at the same venue while the Serengeti Boys will be up against Uganda.

Victory on Wednesday will most likely take the Eaglets to the semi-finals, and a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup finals holding in Brazil later this year.

  • AFCON 2019: We dedicate qualification to God, Tanzanians – Amuneke

Emmanuel Amuneke, coach of the Tanzanian national team, says the team is grateful to God for their qualifying for the finals of the African Cup of Nations after 39 years.

Tanzania finished second in Group L with eight points behind leaders, Uganda.

Amuneke told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone on Tuesday from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Tuesday that it was great to be back to AFCON after 39 years.

“We thank God who made this qualification possible. Our qualification is the work of God. Also, Tanzanians told themselves that they want to qualify for AFCON,’’ he said.

He said that it was a thing of joy that 55 million Tanzanians are celebrating the qualification.

Amuneke said in spite of the qualification, a lot of work would be done to put the “Taifa Stars’’ in good shape for the finals of AFCON taking place in Egypt in June.

According to him, preparations for the tournament have commenced and the team will be focused.

“We have qualified but we need to change our mindset that we have qualified to preparation for the main tournament. People are no longer talking about the qualification but the impact we will make in the tournament,’’ he said.

The coach said that new players that would add value to the team and create positive impact would be invited for final preparations of the AFCON tournament.

“Any player that will create positive impact and add value to the team will be called to camp in preparation for the tournament. The task ahead will not be easy and we need our best hands to accomplish it,’’ Amuneke said.

He also commended Belgium-based forward, Victor Osimhen, for scoring a hat-trick in the Africa U-23 qualifying match against Libya in Asaba.

“I congratulate the U-23 team and my players, Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Nwakali and Samuel Chukwueze for their outstanding performances during the encounter,’’ he said.

Ex-Tanzanian president leads Commonwealth observers for Nigeria’s presidential poll

The Commonwealth has deployed a 20-member Observer Group, led by former President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, for the February 16 Nigerian presidential election.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, constituted the observer group following an invitation from Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), according to Commonwealth Secretariat.

Josephine Latu-Sanft, Commonwealth Secretariat’s Senior Communications Officer, said members of the group included politicians, diplomats and experts in law, human rights, gender and election administration from across the Commonwealth.

She quoted Ms Scotland as saying that an advance group of observers was deployed to Nigeria on January 28, while other members of the team were expected to arrive in Abuja on February 8.

Ms Scotland said: “The Commonwealth has a long history of observing elections in member countries, in solidarity with electors as they choose their leaders, and in support of efforts to strengthen democracy and the rule of law in accordance with the values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter.

The Commonwealth has observed the previous five elections in Nigeria, and I am pleased to be deploying so distinguished a group to again support the nation in its continuing journey of democratic development”.

The Commonwealth Observer Group’s mandate was to observe and consider factors affecting the credibility of the electoral process as a whole.

It would assess whether the elections have been conducted in accordance with the standards for democratic elections to which Nigeria has committed itself, with reference to national legislation and relevant regional, Commonwealth and international commitments.

Where appropriate, the Group could also make recommendations for the future strengthening of the electoral framework.

The Commonwealth Observer Group would consider the pre-election environment and election preparations.

Members would be deployed to various regions of the country where they will observe the voting, vote-counting and results procedures.

The Group would submit its final report for consideration by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, and she will in turn share it with the Government of Nigeria, INEC and political parties.

The Secretary-General would also convey the report to all Commonwealth governments after which the report would then be made public.

The Group would be supported by Commonwealth Secretariat staff led by Katalaina Sapolu, Senior Director of the Governance and Peace Directorate.

Other members of the Commonwealth Observer Group are Lesley Clark of Australia; Gary Dunn, former Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General from Australia; and Omar Jallow from The Gambia.

Tanzanian wife of Nigerian fatally shot in South Africa

The Nigerian Community in South Africa has expressed dismay by the fatal shooting of the wife of a member, Mrs Leyness Mangu Irumudomo.
The late Mrs Irumudomo, a.k.a. Mama Lee, 43, was a Tanzanian married to Mr Jackson Igbinosa Irumudomo, a native of Ekpoma in Edo. They had three children.
Her husband told the News Agency of Nigeria on the telephone from Pretoria, South Africa, that Mama Lee was shot on Oct. 26, in Soweto.
He said that prior to her death, a Tanzanian who worked in the same mall with his wife had sent threat text messages to her.
“My wife and her fellow Tanzanian worked together in the same mall and because of misunderstanding in their work place, the same lady sent her threat messages.
“A docket was opened at Pretoria Central Police Station on the threat to her life by her colleague, who is also a Tanzanian,’’ he said.
Irumudomo said that the death was painful and that he and their children would miss his wife sorely.
Mr Adetola Olubajo, President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, said that the body was saddened by the death of Mama Lee.
“She was an amiable business woman and a blessing to friends and family. She will be greatly missed because of the vacuum her absence has created,’’ he said.
Olubajo, however, said that the union was worried that killing was now fashionable within the Nigerian community.
“The quietness of our government officials is of great concern to us. A Nigerian was shot dead in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, last week, nothing has been done to bring the perpetrators to book.
“People are now bold to kill one another just by the slightest disagreement because the killers of Nigerians and their family members are not brought to book,’’ he said.
Olubajo also said that “we need investigation and prosecution of the murder cases involving Nigerians directly or indirectly.’’
