Taraba State @34: Senator Manu hails Tarabans, advocates peace and togetherness

Manu the immediate past deputy Governor of Taraba State advocated peace and togetherness in the state as these are major ingredients that can catapult the state to greater heights of excellence.

He made this disclosure in a congratulatory message he personally signed where he also hailed the State Governor His Excellency, Dr Agbu Kefas for his people -centered policies.

The former number two citizen emphasized the importance of unity among Tarabans in promoting peace and strengthening democratic institutions within the state.

  • Fresh Taraba attacks leave over 30 residents dead, several injured

Fresh Taraba attacks leave over 30 residents dead, several injured

Over thirty persons have been killed and many others injured following an attack by suspected herders on a farming community in Munga Lelau of Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident followed a mutual suspicion between farmers and herders as to the whereabouts of their cattle.

This led to attacks and counterattacks by neighbours who have lived for decades as one entity.

The victims were given a mass burial within the community as their tradition demands for anyone killed during a crisis.

Unlike another attack, which claimed two lives in the Bandawa community after a farmer confronted the attackers for encroaching on his farm with their cattle, eyewitnesses say these assailants came on motorcycles. They shot sporadically and set some buildings in the village ablaze.

The attacks took place over the weekend in the North-Central state.

Residents say they have lived peacefully for decades with the Fulani tribe and alleged that it’s a case of compromise by security agencies and masterminded by their neighbours.

One of the affected residents, Alpharis Philemon, described the incident as disheartening.

”It is something that we never expected. The whole people of Munga are heartbroken. From time immemorial, we lived in peace with the Fulanis, and no one can actually tell you what led to this ugly situation,” he said.

”We do not have a history of conflict between Munga and the Fulani. In my observation, it is an issue of land grabbing. The rainy season has started, and whenever there is a crisis, our people cannot go too far, and they’ll use their farms for grazing.

”The security is compromised and I can say this without any fear or contradiction because Munga Lelau and Karim, the headquarters of Karim Lamido, is just a seven-minute drive. So, if there is an incident, we expect the security to have responded.

”For more than two hours, the military did not come to our rescue. I think the military and the police have questions to answer.”

Chairman of Karim Lamido local government area, Bitrus Danjos, who could not hold back his tears and was assisted out of the mass burial scene, described the incident as barbaric.

He wondered why victims did not seek redress in the court of law but rather took the law into their own hands.

According to him, his local government area shares a porous boundary with five states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Nasarawa, and Plateau, which makes them susceptible to attacks by bandits.

He said many people have already been displaced and are seeking succour from the government and non-governmental organizations.

The Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, in a press statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Emmanuel Bello, described the attack as horrendous and unacceptable.

Governor Kefas warned that the aggressors would suffer great repercussions going forward, even as he reiterated his commitment to continue to secure the state from external attacks and other forms of aggression.

Over 30 killed in Taraba Community as violence erupts again

At least 30 people lost their lives last Friday in a deadly attack on Munga Lelau, a community in the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State. Armed assailants reportedly stormed the village around 2:30 p.m., setting fire to homes and food storage facilities worth millions of naira.

The incident is the latest in a series of recurring clashes between farmers and herders in the area, but local sources have described Friday’s attack as the deadliest in recent memory.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen, believed to be Fulani herdsmen, arrived on motorcycles and launched a coordinated assault from multiple directions, catching residents off guard. However, Fulani pastoralists have countered these claims, alleging that they too have been victims of violent attacks by farming communities.

Several neighbouring villages were also attacked, though casualty figures from those areas remain unconfirmed. Witness accounts paint a grim picture of indiscriminate shootings, burning homes, and widespread destruction. One survivor described the assault as “a nightmare in broad daylight.”

According to Daily Trust, security personnel were stationed in Bandawa—a nearby community previously hit by similar violence—when the attackers descended on Munga Lelau. By the time security forces arrived, over 20 bodies had already been recovered, and many residents were wounded by gunfire.

Victims were buried in a mass grave on Saturday under the supervision of military and police personnel, as the community grappled with grief and devastation.

Prior to the May 23 attack, a series of violent incidents had been reported in Bandawa, Munga, and Fulani settlements, with dozens killed in ongoing clashes and reprisal attacks.

Bandawa community spokesperson, Mr. Joachim Dangana, condemned the violence, calling the event deeply tragic. He emphasized the historically peaceful relationship between the Fulani and Bandawa communities and appealed for reconciliation to restore lasting peace.

He also stressed the importance of peace for Taraba State’s development, especially as Governor Agbu Kefas works to draw local and foreign investment to the region.

Isa Ahmed, speaking for the Fulani community, echoed calls for peace but also highlighted the suffering endured by Fulani groups in the area. He alleged that over 30 Fulani individuals, including women and youths, had been killed in previous assaults, with more than 35 injured and hundreds of cattle either killed or stolen.

“Our voices are not heard, our complaints are ignored, and yet we are labelled as the aggressors,” Ahmed said.

Daily Trust investigations revealed that Karim Lamido is a key destination for dry-season rice farmers from across Nigeria. However, the escalating violence has forced many to abandon the area for safer locations.

The Taraba State Police Command has confirmed the attack on Munga Lelau and stated that investigations are ongoing.

Just in: Many feared dead as explosion reportedly rocks Taraba

The Taraba State Police Command has stated that three children died in Didango Geita village, Karim Lamido Local Government Area of the state following a suspected “accidental discharge” from a dane gun.

The state Commissioner of Police, David Iloyonomon, stated this while refuting claims made by some villagers who attributed the deaths to an explosion from Improvised Explosive Devices, Channels TV reports Sunday.

Iloyonomon stated that the gunpowder from the dane gun later exploded and killed them.

The CP said the three deceased children were playing on a tree while four others who sustained injuries were on the ground, as they are receiving treatment at the state specialist hospital in Jalingo, the state capital.

The CP said, “One Danjuma Audu gave the information to the police that there was an explosion which resulted in the death of three youngsters and injury to four others.

“On the receipt of the information, we deployed the anti-bomb unit of the Nigeria Police Force who rushed to the scene, conducted a professional and thorough search and discovered that no exhibit is related to dynamite or IED recovered from the scene.

“Instead, they recovered pellets from a Dane gun which was evident in the bodies of the casualties and suspected to be responsible for their death.

“Since there was no assailant, it is suspected to be an accidental discharge.”

The police boss noted that the scene of the incident has been condoned, and investigation has commenced to unravel more facts.

Further findings by the E.O.D unit revealed that the three pallets recovered are used in conjunction with gunpowder to prepare ammunition for Dane guns.

Thereafter, we went to further to interview Danjuma Audu, who reported the incident to the police. He revealed that the three children that died were the ones on top of the tree in the farm, while the other four that were on the ground sustained injuries.

“That’s a very clear evidence to show that it is not an IED explosion, because if it were to be IED or dynamite explosion, those children on the ground and on the tree would have been shattered beyond recognition,” Iloyonomon stated.

The CP identified the three deceased children as Miracle Danjuma, 11; Liyacheyan Bitrus, 12; and Kefas Bitrus, 11.

The other four who sustained injuries include Joseph Danjuma, 8; Leah Aluda, 8; Godbless Hassan, 7; Christian Hassan, 7.

2 to die by hanging for kidnapping in Taraba

The Chief Judge of Taraba, Justice Joel Agya, on Friday sentenced Yusufa Adamu and Adamu Abdullahi to death by hanging for kidnapping Balkisu Kambe and Maryam Musa in Gashaka Local Government Area.

Agya, while delivering the judgement in Jalingo, said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The Judge said that the duo committed the crime in 2019.

The Prosecution Counsel, Mr Samson Gimba, had told the court that Musa was kidnapped on Sept 2, 2019, at Serti while Kambe was kidnapped at Angwan America in Baruwa on Sept. 29, 2019.

He also found them guilty of criminal conspiracy and illegal possession of firearms and sentenced each to 10 years without an option of fine.

The Judge said that the sentence on criminal conspiracy and illegal possession of firearms would take effect from 2019 when they were arrested and detained.

Besides, the Judge said the convicts made confessional statements about the crime and collected ransom.

He noted that one of the victims, Kambe, identified the defendants as member of the gang that abducted her in her house when they could not find her husband at Angwan America in Baruwa, on Sept. 29, 2019.

Kambe said they unmasked themselves when they took her to the bush for two days before her husband sent them N1 million ransom.

“Based on Section 3, Paragraph 8 of the Kidnapping and Abduction Law of Taraba 2019, I hereby sentence you to death by hanging. May God have mercy on your souls.

“You, however, have the right to apply to the Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy for the sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment, especially since no life was lost in the process of kidnapping,” the Judge said.

Gimba, in his reaction, hailed the judgement as “sound and commendable”.

Mr Mahanar Puki, Counsel to the defendants, had pleaded for mercy when the guilty verdict was pronounced before the Judge passed the sentence.

Puki had told the court that the convicts were first-time offenders and had shown remorse throughout the trial and should be shown mercy.

How Police rejected over N8m bribe from bandits in Taraba

Taraba State Police Command has said over N8m cash ransom was rejected as a bribe from bandits.

The police arrested thirteen suspected bandits and kidnappers on their watchlist for terrorizing residents of Jalingo, Yorro, Lau, and Zing local government areas of the state.

This was disclosed by the state commissioner of Police Joseph Eribo while parading the suspects and their exhibits at the police headquarters in Jalingo, the state capital on Wednesday.

According to the police, the bandits use the adjoining mountains as a shield and any attempt to rescue victims or attack the bandits leads to collateral damage, hence its decision to deploy all its operational assets to deal with the emerging trend.

After a collaboration by the police and other sister security agencies, vigilante officers, and professional hunters, thirteen of the bandits were arrested in different parts of the state. Over N8m cash ransom was rejected as a bribe, and five AK-47 rifles and five rounds of live ammunition were recovered with five kidnap victims rescued.

Three electricity vandals were also arrested for penetrating and vandalizing the electricity transformer of the police headquarters as well as vandalizing that of Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) in the Lau Local Government Area of the state.

The bandits and kidnappers in the course of interrogation say they usually collaborate with the electricity vandals to vandalize electricity transformers which gives them easy access to kidnap or kill in communities experiencing power outages, especially at night.

Some of the bandits who allegedly masterminded the kidnap of a traditional ruler, a pastor, and an imam as well as a kidnapper who collected over N8m ransom among others confessed to having committed the crime.

The police said all the suspects will be charged to court in line with the state’s anti-kidnapping law and will ensure that justice is served.
