Ayade’s defection to APC embarrassing – Taraba Gov

Taraba State governor, Arc. Darius Ishaku, has described the defection of Cross River State governor, Ben Ayade, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as embarrassing and shocking to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ishaku spoke to State House correspondents on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to him, governors on the platform of the PDP see themselves as an alternative to the APC.

Ishaku specifically noted that the opposition governors were doing very well in their respective states.

He said, “Well, I wouldn’t know precisely the governor’s thinking, because all of us are different, but we are greatly shocked and embarrassed that he will suddenly dumped the party for APC, because all of us see PDP as alternative to APC. And all the PDP governors are doing very well in their respective states. And for him to leave to APC, I don’t know the details of that, I have not seen.

“But be that as it may, I believe that any democratic country must have an opposition, a viable opposition and opposition in itself is good for democracy.

“If you don’t have an opposition, then the government in power can go astray and so I believe in the vibrant democracy with an opposition, if we have an opposition it’s good.

“But as to the reason why our colleague in PDP will depart, I don’t know the details, and I can’t vouch for him. He has the tough one. So, but I want to assure you that all the governors in PDP are doing very well, very well in their respective states.

“Possibly because we’re in an position and the pressure is on us and we are doing the best we can. I will invite you to my state in Taraba, to come and see the beautiful works I’m doing there in all ramifications. From education, agriculture, name it, we are doing a great job, infrastructure, etc.”

On the failed efforts of the party’s reconciliation committee to convince Ayade to remain in the PDP, he said “Let me tell you, they have done a good job. A very good one. But it depends on the decision of an individual and what he actually hopes to gain. You may get the best of intentions somebody may not agree with you.

“And so that is the point that I think is more of the governor’s decision as it affects him, and that nobody can hold brief for that.”

He also dismissed reports that some other PDP governors may defect to the APC soon.

“I don’t see that happening and like I said even his own was a shock to some of us. I don’t see that happening.

“And for Nigeria, we should hope for a an opposition, a vibrant opposition that will help to put and maintain the system in going. Democracy without an opposition is not a democracy,” he added.

When asked if governors subscribe or support the removal of fuel subsidy, he said: “these are all issues that are ongoing, I can’t preempt anything now even including the issue of JUSUN. There are all ongoing, committees have been set up. The issues are still ongoing.”

On the spate of insecurity in Taraba, he said: “Well, we are doing our best under the circumstances to make sure that we reduce as much as possible the casualties.

“And in Taraba, well, we have tried to reduce it. But of recent we’re still having our own problems too. But we working on it and and we’re on top of it. Just last week, I had some problems between the herders and the farmers and we have quelled it substantially. But with a lot of losses, we’re hoping that we’ll have come to a full stop by now,” he added.

  • I’ve lost countless people in Taraba to FG’s failure on security, Gov Ishaku laments

I’ve lost countless people in Taraba to FG’s failure on security, Gov Ishaku laments

Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku on Saturday advocated for state policing as he lamented the federal government’s failure to keep the country safe.

The Governor made the comment when he paid a condolence visit to the residence of the late Ardo-Kola Local government chairman who was kidnapped and murdered on January 24.

According to him, the constitution of the country is defective, hence the need to review it to accommodate state policing accurately for the safety of lives and property, without which insecurity will continuously rear its ugly head.

He insisted that unless the strata of security agencies be broken, the Federal government alone cannot handle the security of the nation.

”Since I came to power, I have repeatedly and I am going to repeat it that unless we breakdown the strata of security agencies in Nigeria, particularly the police, we cannot adequately curtail insecurity,” Ishaku said.

”There must be state police, and there must also be local government police.

”The Federal government alone cannot handle the security of this nation. It has shown that it has failed woefully and for us to achieve results, the security has to be broken down’

”Where we copied this constitution is the United States of America and it has Federal, state, and local government police.

”Where something is bigger than the local government police, the state police comes in and where it is bigger than the state police, the Federal police comes in and where it is bigger than the whole three, then the military is invited.

”The military is the last resort there, but ours here the military is the first resort because we have woefully failed.”

He called on the APC-led government to take the issue of insecurity seriously and find a solution to it.

”I am also calling on all politicians in the position of power to seriously look at the security situation in the country.

”In this state, I have lost so many people that I cannot count, this is a chairman that I have lost now, I lost my own member Taraba state house of Assembly Hosea Ibi and others too numerous to mention.

”And I speak to you, there is tension in the southwest, but do we continue to sleep with one eye closed and keep quiet as if nothing is happening? No.”

”Something is happening which desperately needs an answer.”

  • 12 health workers test positive for COVID-19 in Taraba

12 health workers test positive for COVID-19 in Taraba

Twelve health workers comprising of three doctors and nine nurses have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Federal Medical centre, Jalingo, the Taraba state capital.

Confirming the incident to Newsmen in Jalingo, shortly after an emergency meeting of the technical committee, the acting head of clinical services of the hospital Ishaya Kola said the medical personnel are responding to treatment adequately.

”For this year alone, FMC has recorded 19 cases of COVID-19, out of which 12, unfortunately, are health workers,” he said.

”Among the health workers are three doctors and nine nurses of which none is dead.”

His counterpart the Chief Medical Director of the State’s Specialist hospital, Alex Maiyangwa, said mass testing is ongoing.

”In the last one month we tested 363 cases and 60 without the health workers turned out positive and fortunately, no mortality ”

Worried by the state of non-compliance, the state government through the technical committee has ordered for compulsory wearing of facemasks by residents in public places.

Chairman of the committee Innocent Vakkai says hands must be on deck to check further spread of the pandemic.

”The committee noted that there is an increase in the number of cases in the state which cuts across all the LGAs with the epocentre as the state capital Jalingo.

”In view of that, the committee is advocating that the populace should ensure the compulsory use of facemasks in public places.

”The number of cases is rising in Taraba and if nothing is done, it can lead to a catastrophic end.

”As we await the arrival of the vaccines, let me put it on record that it will first be given to front line health workers that are working directly on patients, either at isolation or treatment centres ”

“Just in case any corps member is found to be COVID-19 positive, the committee has put up measures on how they can be isolated.”

According to the NCDC, so far Taraba has a record of 296 cases, with 213 discharged while 71 are active.

While the NCDC says 12 persons have died of the deadly coronavirus in Taraba, the State government disagrees with the figure, insisting that no mortality has befallen the state as regards COVID-19.

Lack of PPEs and exposure of medical personnel to COVID-19 pandemic is one of the reasons why the Association of Resident Doctors are currently on strike in the state.
