JUST IN: IBEDC, Ikeja Electric, others impacted as fire guts TCN transformer

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said a fire incident at Egbin Power Plc at about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday affected its 150 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) transformer at the Egbin Transmission Substation.

TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, on Wednesday disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja.

She explained that the fire originated from one of the power station’s service transformers, owned by Egbin Power, which was directly connected to the 33 Kilo Volt (kV) side of TCN’s 150MVA 330/132/33kV Inter-Bus Transformer II.

According to her, preliminary investigations traced the cause of the fire to a faulty 33kV instrument transformer (CT/VT) installed by Egbin Power, which caught fire.

“This ultimately led to the damage of a 150MVA power transformer belonging to TCN, causing oil leakage from the transformer due to a tear in its main tank.

“As a result of the incident, there is a temporary reduction in bulk power supply to Ikorodu and Odogunyan 132/33kV transmission substations, which supply Ikeja Electricity  Distribution Company (IKEDC) and parts of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) franchise areas, as well as Sagamu Line 1, Sagamu Line 2, and Maryland Line 2 on the 132kV network within Lagos State,” he said.

Mbah said that at the time of the incident, a total load of 47 Mega Watts (MW) was affected.

She said that the load was immediately diverted to the second available 150MVA power transformer within the substation, which was now operating under strain.

Mbah also noted that following the incident, the capacity deficit had increased and remained high, resulting in load-shedding across all affected areas.

She said that the company was working diligently to replace the damaged transformer and restore normal power supply as soon as possible, and appealed for more time.

“TCN has already notified the  IKEDC and Eko  Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to assist in load management within their franchise areas.

“On our part, TCN is already making urgent arrangements to source the replacement transformer. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this is causing the two distribution companies and electricity customers in the affected areas.

“And pledge to work hard to ensure full restoration of bulk supply to the substations in the shortest possible time.

TCN overwhelmed by activities of vandals

The Managing Director, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Kaduna Region, Mr Nasir Mansur, has urged communities to act fast in curtailing vandalism, saying that the firm was overwhelmed by vandalism.

He made the call on Monday during a sensitisation and public awareness campaign tagged: ‘Encroachment of the TCN Right of Way and Vandalisation of High-Tension Installations’, at Mando, Kaduna State.

He stated that vandalism was the greatest challenge in Nigeria’s power sector, saying, “traditional leaders and the members of the communities are critical stakeholders that will help in curbing the menace.

“This trend is dangerous, if we continue like this, I am afraid, electricity cannot be sustainable. The consequences of vandalism include interrupted power supply, huge losses and other associated damages; we expect all patriotic citizens to protect these facilities,” he said.

Technical presentations were done by the Health, Safety and Environment’, Electrical and Maintenance Department (EMD) as well as Systems Lines Departments of TCN.

Mr Yakubu Abdulrazak from EMD, explained that the right of way for high voltage power lines were 25 meters left and 25 meters right, adding that it was dangerous to farm or build on the right of way.

“People encroaching the company’s right of way may suffer electrocution, fire hazards and structural collapse, leading to deaths and loss of properties, ” he said.

Also, traditional leaders at the event, pledged their support for the cause, saying they would ensure dissemination of information to their subjects and collaborate to report any issue of vandalisation.

One of them, Adamu Saleh, the Sarkin Jaji, commended TCN for the sensitisation programme, saying it has armed the community leaders with information on the dangers of encroaching right of way, as well as vandalisation.

Saleh said, “Security must be strengthened along these facilities; traditional leaders and security must collaborate to fight against encroachment of right of way and vandalism.”

Another ruler, the Sarkin Mando, Sani Musa,  stated that his Palace had been reporting suspected moves to vandalise TCN equipment or erect a structure on the right of way.

“We will continue to support authorities in ensuring businesses and houses on the right of way are evacuated to avoid tragedy, ” Musa said.

TCN provided hot-lines to report damages or vandalism, to call or send mails, which include: 07016839880 or affairs.public@tcn.org.ng.

  • Electricity supply: TCN laments over N457bn debt

Electricity supply: TCN laments over N457bn debt

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), says it is being owed N457 billion as of March for services rendered within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

The Managing Director of TCN, Mr Sule Abdulaziz, made this known on Wednesday at the opening of a capacity-building workshop for journalists in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

Abdulaziz was represented by Mr Oluwagbenga Ajiboye, Executive Director, Transmission Service Provider, TCN.

The Workshop, with the theme, “Understanding the Critical Role of TCN in Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI),” was organised to deepen the knowledge of the journalists covering the power sector.

According to Abdulaziz, the outstanding debt includes N217 billion in legacy debt and N240 billion for recent services rendered.

He noted that in spite of the financial constraints, the company had made significant strides in improving its operational capacity, with its wheeling capacity now increased to 8,701 megawatts.

However, Abdulaziz pointed out that the sector continued to face critical challenges such as vandalism and funding shortfalls, which undermined efforts to optimise performance, in spite of substantial investments in transmission infrastructure.

He also stressed the need for greater investment in the distribution segment of the power value chain, warning that any weak link in the chain could compromise power delivery to end-users.

“The electricity value chain must not be broken. Its strength must be uniform to successfully deliver electricity to consumers,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, Mr Aminu Tahir, General Manager, Project Coordination, highlighted the issue of unutilised substations.

Tahir said that several newly completed substations remained idle due to the inability to connect them to transmission lines.

He attributed the delay to persistent right-of-way challenges, which had hampered progress on key projects. He noted that TCN had secured funding from various international partners.

Tahir listed the partners to include the World Bank, French Development Agency (AFD), African Development Bank, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to support its infrastructure expansion initiatives.

In her remarks, TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, said the workshop was organised to bridge the information gap between the company and the media.

“It is very important to us at TCN for you to understand us well and report us better. This workshop provides an opportunity for journalists to engage with TCN experts and get firsthand information on the company’s activities,” she said.
