The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said there will be a seven-hour power outage in Asokoro and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the affected areas will experience blackout on Saturday, February 22, and Sunday, February 23, 2025, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.

She attributed the action to scheduled annual preventive maintenance on two transformers.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria informs the public that its maintenance crew will conduct annual preventive maintenance on the 2x100MVA, TR3 & TR4 transformers at the Apo 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Abuja,” the statement read.

“The planned power interruptions are unavoidable, as Abuja DisCo will be unable to receive bulk power supply from the transformers during the maintenance period. Power supply will be restored to the affected areas upon completion of the maintenance exercise.”

Mbah explained that on Saturday, February 22, the power disruptions will affect the National Hospital, G2 Injection Station, Garki, Area 1, and Asokoro for seven hours.

According to the statement, areas including Apo Legislative Quarters, Apo Resettlement, Gudu, Apo Mechanic, and surrounding areas will also experience a seven-hour power outage.

Mbah explained that the interruption is necessary as Abuja Electricity Distribution Company will be unable to receive bulk power supply from the affected transformers during the maintenance period.

TCN apologised for any inconvenience caused to the affected customers during this time.

“Power supply will be restored once the maintenance exercise is completed. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause the affected electricity customers,” the company said.

The company said this in a statement on its X handle in Abuja on Saturday.

‘it said ”TCN management will like to reiterate that there has been no system collapse this year.

”On Feb. 12, when the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330 Kilo Volt (kV) transmission line tripped, the Benin-Egbin 330kV line was on a scheduled outage for mechanical line tracing.

”The tripping resulted in a cascaded outage, causing loss of supply within Abuja, Lagos, and Osogbo axis.”

According to TCN, other parts of the country are fully intact.

Meanwhile, full restoration of bulk power supply to affected areas had since been completed.

The company said that it was  pertinent to note that the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) was being regulated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and governed by industry documents.

”The documents reserve for the National Control Centre System Operator or her designated back-up, the National  Supplementary Control Centre (SNCC) has  the exclusive right to provide information to the public about events and status of the grid,”it said.

She said that the community members promptly apprehended one of the suspected vandals while the others escaped and handed him over to the police.

”TCN commends the people of Watuolo village for their swift action and vigilance.

”We equally appeal to communities hosting critical infrastructure to emulate this example and take ownership of protecting transmission installations in their vicinity.

As we continue to work with security operatives and host communities against vandalism, we appeal for more vigilance by the residents in the communities, who we believe are very critical in this fight,” she said.

TCN restores bulk power supply to Apo transmission substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Friday announced  the restoration of full bulk power to its 132/33 Kilo Volt (KV) Apo transmission substation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN’S General Manager Public Affairs, announced on its X handle that power was restored to the substation on Thursday.

Mbah said that the restoration followed the successful relocation of eight 132kV and 33kV towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line Southern Expressway route.

She said that the relocation of the towers was necessitated by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) road dualisation project along the Apo axis.

”The two-week relocation work, which commenced on Jan. 6  involved dismantling, and reconstructing the towers, as well as restringing power cables.

”With the restoration of full bulk power, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC)  can now provide normal electricity supply from the substation
to its customers in the affected areas, ending the previous load rationing.

” The TCN appreciates the patience and understanding of the affected electricity consumers during this period, ”She said.

18 transmission towers vandalised in January -TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says more than 18 transmission towers were vandalised between Jan 9 and Jan 14 across Rivers, Abia, and Kano states.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs,  TCN said this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday.

Mbah said that Mr  Emmanuel Okpa, General Manager, Transmission TCN’S Port Harcourt Region, reported that routine patrols by linesmen on Jan. 10,  uncovered damage to towers 171 through towers 181 and 184.

She said that on Jan. 14, vandals targeted towers 146, 147, and 149 along the Owerri/Ahoada 132 Kilo Volt kV line in Rivers, removing base brackets and compromising the stability of the towers.

“In Abia State, Mr  Azuh Lucky, Head of the Lines Department for the region, reported the theft of bolts, nuts, and structural members from towers 160 to 162 on the Alaoji/Umuahia 132kV line.

”Meanwhile, in Kano, towers 105, 106, and 107 along the Katsina-Gazoua 132/33kV transmission line were critically damaged by vandals on Jan. 9,  compromising their structural integrity and risking collapse.

”In  the early hours of Jan.17,  vandalised 132kV underground transmission cables were discovered by TCN engineers near Millennium Park in Abuja. This affected power supply to the central area and its environs.

”These incidents pose a significant challenge to TCN’S operations as a company ” she said.

She said that the company had bolstered security measures, increased lines patrol and the number of vigilante groups, and is also collaborating with security operatives.

Mbah said that the company was appealing for the full support of every Nigerian, particularly those in communities hosting TCN’S installations.

“Nigerians  must collectively recognise that the transmission network is our collective asset and essential for our socioeconomic development.

”The vandals and those who buy stolen materials are sabotaging the nation. All hands must be on deck to ensure the growth of the country’s power sector, which is critical to the development of our country

”TCN’s grid expansion plans are under tremendous strain due to the persistent vandalism of its installations,” she said.

She said that the financial implications of constant repairs to vandalised transmission installations, along with the stress on the grid, were having adverse effects on TCNs grid expansion drive.

”This is a clarion call for everyone to join forces with TCN to put an end to this menace and safeguard our  electricity network,” Mbah said.

Presidential villa in pitch darkness as vandals steal underground cables

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a major power outage in Abuja’s Central Area and surrounding districts, following the theft of critical underground cables.

According to TCN, the vandals targeted the 132kV transmission line and underground cables, severely disrupting the power supply to the nation’s capital.

A statement by TCN’s General Manager Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, on Friday, stated that the incident occurred around the Millennium Park area, where 40 meters of 1x500mm² XLPE conductors on two 132kV transmission lines were stolen.

She noted that cables transport bulk electricity to TCN’s Central Area transmission substation, which supplies power to Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for onward distribution to customers.

“The incident, which was carried out around the Menillum Park axis of Abuja, has affected over 60% of the power supply to Abuja as the vandals carted away 40 meters of 1x500mm² XLPE conductors on the 2 numbers 132kV transmission lines

“Consequently, areas experiencing power outages include Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of Presidential Villa,” she said.

To this end, she said TCN’s engineers have been mobilised to the site of the incident to repair the vandalised cables and urged Nigerians to be vigilant in observing and reporting suspicious activities to security operatives.

TCN clarifies reported national grid collapse

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has denied reports of a national grid collapse on Saturday, calling the claims inaccurate.

TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, made the clarification in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday.

Mbah explained that earlier on Saturday, at approximately 1:41 p.m., the Osogbo-Ihovour line tripped, followed by the tripping of the Benin-Omotosho line.

She noted that these incidents only affected bulk power supply to the Lagos area.

She further clarified that just before the tripping, total generation on the grid was 4,335.63 Megawatts (MW), and after the trippings, generation dropped to 2,573.23 MW, which indicated the grid did not experience a collapse.

“The transmission line tripping affected Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras,”

She added that all had been restored except for the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, which was still being worked on.

Mbah emphasised that TCN was working hard to build a more robust transmission grid in spite of ongoing challenges.

She also urged caution against the spread of misinformation, stressing the importance of disseminating accurate and verifiable facts.
