No blackout, national grid is intact – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria(TCN) says the national grid is intact and supplying electricity to distribution load centres nationwide.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN’S General Manager Public Affairs, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mbah said that TCN did not make any statement through her office that there would be a national blackout as claimed in some quarters.

She said,, ”The statement is mischievous and baseless as TCN, through the Public Affairs Head, did not make such.

”We hereby note that the nation’s grid is intact and supplying bulk electricity to distribution load centers nationwide.

”As at when issuing this statement, the TCN National Control Centre Osogbo which controls bulk power transmission nationwide, is actively operational.

TCN announces daily power disruption in Benin

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced power disruption to some parts of Benin City, Edo State capital.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, Benin Main Substation, announced this via a statement issued on Sunday in Benin.

The disruption, Mbah said, was due to a plan to carry out an upgrade of its Ihovbor 132/33kV Transmission Substation.

The general manager said the company would use the processes to also replace a 60MVA power transformer within the substation with a 100MVA transformer.

“The exercise is scheduled to commence from Monday, November 13, 2023, to January 7, 2024.

“Consequently, there will be a minimal load supply of eight hours per day through the substation to Benin Distribution Company (BEDC) for distribution to its customers who are supplied electricity from three feeders in Ihovbor substation.

“The upgrade will not affect bulk power supply through the University of Benin (UNIBEN) feeder.

“Areas that will experience power interruption due to the upgrade include Egba, Oluku, and Ihovbor, while UNIBEN will have its 24-hour normal power supply,” said the public affairs officer.

She regretted, however, any inconveniences the upgrade would cause electricity consumers within the affected areas.

According to her, the exercise is necessary to increase the capacity of the TCN’s Ihovbor transmission substation to enable the delivery of more bulk electricity to Benin DisCo for distribution to its customers.

Reps summon CBN, DISCOs, contractors over $321m loans for electricity projects

The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has summoned the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in connection with alleged mismanagement of the US$321 million and N18.2 billion loans.

The loans were designated for accelerated transmission and distribution interface, lines, and substation projects.

Rep. Bamidele Salam, Chairman of the Committee, issued the summons during the appearance of Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, Managing Director, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), before the committee in Abuja on Thursday.

These entities were asked to appear before the committee on November 8.

The investigation was prompted by a petition regarding the alleged misuse of funds, which had been disbursed to the DISCOs by the CBN at the request of the TCN.

Salam demanded detailed information regarding the loan disbursements, procurement processes, the involvement of DISCOs in the projects, the current status of the projects, and the loan repayment structure from the beneficiaries.

Salam emphasised the importance of ensuring that public institutions adhere to the law and international best practices while ensuring the judicious utilization of funds.

Appearing before the Committee, Abdulaziz clarified that the funds were transferred directly to the DISCOs by the CBN for the execution of various projects, with the intention of repaying the loans using TCN’s revenue.

However, this repayment arrangement has raised concerns within the committee.

He explained that there was a gap in the electricity sector, leading to complaints from distribution companies regarding the inadequate supply from TCN.

He said, consequently, the need arose to invest in critical projects to enhance the distribution of electricity to Nigerians.

According yo him, the Financial institutions and regulatory bodies, such as CBN and NERC, were involved in the financing and oversight of these projects.

He said the TCN played a beneficiary role, while the DISCOs were responsible for executing the projects.

He added that loan repayments were intended to come from TCN’s revenue, amortized on a monthly basis.

Kebbi residents smile again as TCN restores bulk power supply

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, says it has restored bulk power supply to its Birnin Kebbi Substation, and, by extension, power supply to Kebbi and its environs.

In a statement signed by the general manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN said it resumed transmission through the substation on Friday, 29 September, 2023 at about 11.33 am courtesy of the joint effort of its team of substation, lines, and PC&M engineers from its various regions across the country.

Fire broke out in the Birnin Kebbi substation at midnight on Thursday, 14 September, 2023, throwing Kebbi and Sokoto States and environs, which fall under Kaduna Electric’s franchise area, into darkness, few hours after the national grid collapse occasioned by another fire incident on the Jebba/Kainji electrical installations, leading to total blackout across the country, was fixed by TCN.

The MD/CEO of TCN, Engr Sule Abdulaziz, who in a statement
expressed his deep concern about the unfortunate incidents, believed by some stakeholders to be handiworks of saboteurs, promised quick restoration.
Consequently, bulk supply to Sokoto through the Talata Mafara Substation was restored hours after, as efforts to back-feed Kebbi State in the mean time, while finding permanent solution to the problem, were on.

“The team of engineers who also conveyed the needed material from the regional stores to Birnin Kebbi Substation worked tirelessly round the clock to restore supply through the 150MVA and 60MVA transformers unaffected by the fire incident.

“Supply was first restored to Sokoto State through the 132kV Kaduna-Zaria-Funtua-Gusau-Talatan Mafara line on the 15th of September 2023 and yesterday, power supply has also been restored to the Birnin Kebbi town and environs.

“Presently, work is ongoing to equally connect the 132kV Birinin Kebbi – Sokoto line that will enable TCN to transmit additional bulk electricity to Sokoto State and its environs.

“It is with a great sense of responsibility that we once again express our deepest appreciation to the government and electricity customers in Kebbi State and environs as well as the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, for their understanding and patience during the period. We also thank all stakeholders for their understanding, support, and prayers throughout the very challenging period

“We remain committed to pursuing the network expansion projects and will continue to work hard to ensure the continued improvement of the nation’s transmission grid,” TCN said.

TCN counts losses after fire outbreak

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced work to restore power to Birnin Kebbi and Sokoto following a fire outbreak that gutted two transformers on Thursday night.

One 90MVA (330KV/132KV) and 60MVA (132KV/33KV) transformers damaged as a result of the fire incident were valued at 4 million U.S Dollars.

Addressing newsmen in Birnin Kebbi after inspecting the damaged facilities on Friday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, TCN, Dr Sule AbdulAzeez, described the damages as colossal.

AbdulAzeez, an electrical Engineer by profession, recalled that he received a phone call Thursday night that there was a fire incident in Kebbi TCN substation, noting that communication lasted throughout the night until when the fire was quenched on Friday morning at about 7 a.m.

“That’s why I felt it’s very necessary for me to come down here myself, as well the Executive Director Special Service Provider and General Manager in-charge of Kaduna region to have a first hand information about the incident,” he said.

The TCN boss assured that an investigation committee comprising professionals and specialists would be established with a view to finding out the main cause of the unfortunate incident.

On level of damage, AbdulAzeez who said the company had lost two transformers and a control room, however said their priority was on how to restore light back to Kebbi people and neighbouring states.

He said: “This station is also serving Sokoto not only Kebbi. So, the first thing we are going to do is to back feed Sokoto through Talatan Mafara in Zamfara State.

“Here in Kebbi also, very quickly, we have already mobilised our engineers, infact; they have already started opening the cable tranches.

“Again, we have a transformer here which was supplying Niger Republic, now, it’s not supplying any place, so, we are going to use that transformer to make sure that people of Kebbi get light as quickly as possible.”

AbdulAzeez assured that for the parmanent solution, it would take the company two weeks for arrangement of transformers and other things to restore normal power supply.

He, however, said that: “We are still looking at the possibility of back feeding Kebbi from Sokoto and that can be done in two or three days.”

The managing director appealed to customers to be patient because the incident came unexpected, adding that it had happened and “by the grace of God Almighty we are going to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

He assured that the situation “is under control”, and TCN would do a comprehensive check of the affected transformers immediately to enable it properly assess the transformers for repair work.

The TCN boss also paid homage on the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammad Iliyasu Bashar, at the Abdullahi Fodio palace in Birnin Kebbi to seek royal blessings, assuring that work had already begun towards restoring power to Kebbi state.

Responding, the emir appreciated the MD for personally coming to assess the situation by himself, saying “power had now become a gold, when there is no light, there will be no phone, there will be no communication and all other activities will stand still”.

While expressing happiness that work had already begun, the royal father assured the TCN chief of total support and cooperation to enable them discharge their responsibilities diligently.

Recall that the fire that gutted the two transformers was put out by the fire service personnel and rainfall that ensued that very night.

But at about 4 a.m. on Friday, the transformer tank bursted and re-ignited the fire again.

  • ICYMI: Real reason National Grid collapsed

ICYMI: Real reason National Grid collapsed

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has revealed that a fire outbreak is what caused the national grid to collapse on Thursday night.

Adelabu said: “At 00:35Hrs this morning, a fire outbreak with explosion sound was observed on Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 2 (Cct K2J) blue phase CVT & Blue phase line Isolator of Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 1 was observed burning.

“This led to sharp drops in frequency from 50.29Hz to 49.67 Hz at 0:35:06Hrs with Jebba generation loss of 356.63MW.

“Kainji started dropping load from 451.45 MW at 00:35:07Hrs to zero. At 00:41Hrs frequency dropped further from 49.37 Hz to 48.41Hz then resulted in system collapse of the grid”.

The Minister of Power said the fire has been fully arrested and that over half of the connections are now up and the rest will be fully restored in no time.

“Delay in update was deliberate, so as not to cause panic and to also be able to update on progress of remedial actions taken so far.

“This is to ensure economic and security saboteurs don’t take advantage of every situation reported,” Adelabu said.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed restoration of the national grid has reached advanced stages, adding that power supply is now available in some parts of the country.

Confirming the position of the Power Minister, the transmission company said the collapse, which occurred after a fire incident on Kanji/Jebba 330kV line 2, is being investigated.

JUST IN: TCN breaks silence on National Grid collapse

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has finally opened up on the National Grid that collapsed on Thursday night at about 12:40 a.m.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports TCN to have said restoration of the national grid has reached advanced stages.

According to a statement by the electricity transmission company obtained by TNG, power supply is now available in the West, North Central, South, East, and a large portion of the Northern parts of the country.

The company in the statement disclosed that in the course of the grid restoration, the process initially suffered a setback, which TCN said does not amount to another collapse.

“In the course of any grid restoration process, challenges may be encountered. This happened today while the grid restoration was in progress, but it was promptly addressed,” the company stated.

The statement signed by Ndidi Mbah, GM, Public Affairs of TCN reads in full below:

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, hereby notes that grid restoration nationwide is in progress and has reached advanced stages with power supply now available in the West, North Central, South, East, and a large portion of the Northern parts of the country.

The power supply restoration is sequel to the total grid collapse, which occurred at 12.35am, this morning, causing outage nationwide, after over 421 days of consistent grid stability.

In the course of the grid restoration, the process initially suffered a setback; this does not amount to another collapse. In the course of any grid restoration process, challenges may be encountered. This happened today while the grid restoration was in progress, but it was promptly addressed.

It would be recalled that the last total system collapse recorded was on 20th July 2022, from then to the 13th of September, 2023, ( 421 days), the system had been stable in spite of the challenges posed by zero spinning reserve and lack of adequate System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) essential to a strong and stable grid, among others.

TCN had been able to maintain 421 days of grid stability because it developed and deployed in- house stop gap measures and tools that it has continued to use to manage the nations grid, ensuring its stability.

Meanwhile, the collapse which occurred after a fire incident on Kanji/Jebba 330kV line 2 is being investigated, with the view to forestalling future occurrence and invariably further strengthen the grid.

The incident notwithstanding, TCN is determined to continue to do its best to ensure grid stability.
