A teacher accused of stabbing an 8-year-old student to death at an elementary school in the central city of Daejeon  said she was “annoyed”after being excluded from a class, police said.

“I got annoyed just three days after returning to work,” she was quoted as telling the police, after accusing another person who was not identified of stopping her from teaching a class.

The female teacher in her 40s gave the statement to police after admitting she stabbed the girl on the second floor of the school when she was arrested on Tuesday.

The girl was later pronounced dead at a hospital due to excessive bleeding.

Police said the suspect was found to have received treatment for depression since 2018 and thought of killing herself while on a six-month sick leave that began in early December.

She returned from her leave early, however, and on the day of the attack, purchased a weapon before returning to the school in search of a target.

The teacher told police she waited for children to file out of an after-school class with the intent of dying together with a child.

“I told the last child leaving that I would give her a book and took her with me to the audiovisual room where I strangled and stabbed her,” she was quoted as telling police.

The suspect also stabbed herself and is currently recovering at a hospital.

She was found to have showed signs of aggression earlier as well, including last Thursday, when she twisted the arm of another teacher on Feb. 6, for asking if anything was wrong.

The two were separated by other faculty members, but no reports were filed with the police at the time.

Police said they have asked the National Forensic Service to conduct an autopsy of the child’s body to help determine the exact cause of death.

SAD! Newly recruited soldier stabs teacher in Taraba

A teacher with the Government Science Secondary school located in Donga local government area of Taraba state, has been stabbed by a newly recruited military officer.

The teacher who doubles as the exam officer of the institution, identified as Pavalis Yebduya Joshua, was stabbed for allegedly punishing the soldier’s brother for late coming.

Trouble started on Tuesday morning when the SSS 2 students were stopping latecomers. A newly recruited soldier identified as Barau Ishaq brought in a student (Ishaq Baraya) late for school on a motorcycle, and declined to drop him to be punished by the seniors for coming late.

The soldier claimed he brought the student and as such no senior student or staff should punish him

“As the teacher on duty, I interfered that the student should come back to be punished by me and this time I asked the young soldier if he was at the checkpoint and I refused to stop, will he be happy?” Joshua questioned.

“The soldier said this is different then I said I will punish the student now and I flogged the student four strokes then the young soldier came down from the motorcycle and said I disrespected him.

“I replied him that by age I was not his mate. And since I graduated from university, if I had joined the army through Direct Short Service like my friends who succeeded in the army, he wouldn’t have been here talking to me. He said I couldn’t join the army and I that he too could never attain my level of education.

“We exchanged words to the extent that I asked him to leave my duty post, which he angrily left and promised to come back with his colleagues.

“20 minutes later he came back with two of his friends – one a soldier and the other a civilian wearing army camouflage pretending to be a soldier. They came to the school, pulled out a jack-knife, and chased away students while looking for me. Immediately he saw me, he tried stabbing me but by God’s grace, I tried dodging the knife severally and finally held him together with the knife and the knife gave me cuts on my palm and fingers.

“Seeing that the students and my colleagues were trooping to the scene, the soldier escaped abandoning his two colleagues.

“My principal ran to the police station and reported the case, shortly after the police sent an officer who came and took me to the station together with the abandoned soldier.

“The DSS came and took their statement and I was taken to the hospital by the police officer for treatment. the culprit escaped to the Special Force camp in Akate Donga’s local government area and reported the incident.

“The soldier later returned with a team of special force in complete uniform with a gun scaring the students as they escaped into the bush and in the process two of the students got degrees of injuries while others are still missing.

“After the treatment in the hospital, as I came back to the police station, I met the young soldier there with a team of young special force recruits and right there, I said if not because of the knife he was holding he would not have done this to me.

“There and then live in the police station as witnessed by the police officers and crowd, he again removed the knife and said he would stab me again and nothing would happen even in the presence of the DCO. One of the young special forces threatened to face me personally after the case, the DCO and other two police officers are my witnesses. The special force promised to offset the hospital bill but did nothing up to this moment.”

The teacher is, however, appealing to the state government, the Police, the DSS, the Nigerian Army and all concerned to intervene for justice to be served.

At the moment, neither the Nigerian Army nor the state government has made any statement in defence or otherwise of the said incident.

SAD! Teacher k!lls lover, buries him in her garden

A court in the United Kingdom has sentenced a primary school teacher who stabbed her partner to death and buried his body in their garden, to 20 years in jail.

Judge Mark Lucraft imposed a mandatory life sentence and ordered that the convict, 50-year-old, Fiona Beal, must serve the jail term before she is considered for parole.

Mr Lucraft handed out the sentence at the Old Bailey, on Thursday, after the convict had back in April, pleaded guilty to killing her partner of 17 years, Nicholas Billingham, for allegedly having an affair with another woman.

The court heard that the remains of the 42-year-old were recovered in March 2022, in Northampton, but he was last seen alive on 1 November 2021. His body was said to have been buried in makeshift layers of sheeting and concrete.

The judge in his ruling, told the defendant that, “Having moved and buried the body in the garden, you then lied to his mother, numerous friends, all his family and yours as to what you had done and where he was. There was lie after lie.”

The deceased’s mother, Yvonne Valentine, in a victim impact statement read out in court, described the defendant as “pure evil”, while also narrating how she had a Christmas drink together on December 23 2021, not knowing she was just feet from her son’s corpse.

The court also heard that Mr Billingham had renovated a house the day he died, before he returned to the home he and Ms Beal shared in Northampton.

Prosecutor Hugh Davies KC told the judge that Mr Billingham’s death was a “carefully planned domestic execution”, as Ms Beal had stabbed the victim in the neck and disposed of his body.

Speaking to the BBC outside the court, the cousin of the deceased, James Smith, said, “Nothing can ever bring him back and no sentence would ever feel enough.”

Also, a Deputy Chief Crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) at East Midlands, Andrew Baxter, after the hearing said the convict, “exploited a narrative that she was the victim of abuse at the hands of her long-term partner, but rather than leave the relationship, she killed him in a planned, cold-blooded execution when he thought he was safe with his partner.”

Police arrest ten secondary school students for beating teacher up in Ogun state

A team of ten senior secondary school students in Ogun State have been arrested by the police for beating up a teacher, whose name has been given as Kolawole Shonuga.

It was gathered that the teacher’s  offence was stopping one of them from cheating during an examination in the school.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at Isanbi Comprehensive High School, Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.

It was further gathered that Shonuga, while invigilating the unified examination for the SS 1 Art class students, caught one 18-year-old Ashimi Adebanjo, cheating and seized his paper.

Pained by the teacher’s actions, the students after school hours, ganged up, waylaid the teacher, and beat him up at the school’s gate.

An eye witness who pleaded anonymity said one of them, Kazeem Adelaja allegedly hit a stick on Shonuga’s head while others were beating him.

However, the police operatives from Remo Division later caught up with  the students and arrested about ten of them.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Omotola Odutola, confirmed the incident.

Odutola said Shonuga had made a formal report on the alleged assault at Remo Police Division.

She also confirmed the arrest of the ten suspects.

A police source hinted that the suspects have already been arraigned in court for assault.

The State Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Felix Agbesanwa frowned at the incident and insisted that the students must face the wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent.

He said “The incident is true and I have been briefed. Our stand is that any student who raises his hand against his teacher should face the wrath of the law.

“There’s no going back on that. No student must raise his hands against the teacher, whether Ogun Teach teachers or permanent teachers, a teacher is a teacher.

“They must be made to face the law to serve as a deterrent. I learnt they have been charged to court already.”

The state government has also condemned the act and vowed that it would not condone acts of indiscipline by learners across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu stated this in Abeokuta while receiving the new Executive of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria.

He noted that part of the efforts put in place was the signing of Undertaking Forms by learners, parents, and school heads to make learners and parents liable for any misconduct of the learners or parents alike, saying the aim was to have a safe learning environment free from the pandemonium of any sort.

“I’m using this opportunity to advise parents to talk to their children, they should warn them, because we won’t tolerate any indiscipline from any child. Any student that misbehaves in school will be dealt with appropriately,” he said.

In October 2021, no fewer than four cases of assault on teachers were recorded in different public schools in the Ogun state, forcing the government to introduce a compulsory undertaking signed by all the students and their parents to curb hooliganism.
