Lagos based teacher bags life imprisonment for defiling 9-year-old girl

A  Lagos based teacher, Peter Jacob has been sentenced  to life imprisonment by An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court  for defiling a 9-year-old pupil with special needs.

Justice Abiola Soladoye held that the prosecution had efficiently proved the charge of defilement against the defendant.

The judge noted that the evidence presented by the respective prosecution witnesses were cogent, compelling and believable

According to the judge the evidence of the defendant and the three defence witnesses (staff of the school where the defendant worked) were self-serving.

She said: “The defendant was observed to be unrepentant and unremorseful.

“The prosecution witness 1 (survivor) properly identified the defendant when she gave her evidence and her evidence was properly corroborated by the other three witnesses.

“The prosecution has successfully established the ingredients of the offence against the defendant.

“The defendant is Godless, brutally wicked, lustful and an act unbecoming of a teacher.

“I find him guilty of the charge and he is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment.”

Soladoye said the convict should have his name registered in the sexual offence register as maintained by the Lagos State government.

The prosecution team, Mr Olusola Soneye, Mrs Olufunke Adegoke and Abimbola Abolade presented four witnesses and eight exhibits were also tendered during the proceedings while the defence called four witnesses.

The prosecution told the court that the convict committed the offence sometime in 2019 at Thescol College, CMD Road, Magodo, in Ikeja.

They submitted that the survivor, who suffered from dyslexia, was in the primary school section of the school which also houses the secondary school where Jacob worked.

The offence violated Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Teacher narrates how neighbour raped her 2-year-old girl in Lagos

A teacher on Tuesday, January 10, told an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court how her neighbour, Jubril Zakari, allegedly defiled her 2-year-old daughter.

The mother of three, a resident of Ojo in Lagos, said she met the defendant naked in his room with his penis erected while her child was also naked on the bed with blood dripping from her vagina.

She was led in evidence by Lagos State counsel, Inumidun Solaarin.

According to the mother, one of her neighbours told her of the whereabouts of the child after she (neighbour) heard her crying in the compound.

“The survivor is my daughter and she is three years old but was two years old at the time the incident happened,” she narrated.

I saw my baby crying on the bed with blood in her private part and met the defendant also naked when I finally opened the door

“I was inside the room with my children watching a movie when power outage occurred. The children told me they wanted to go out, and I allowed them in order to put the house in order.

“It was not up to 10 minutes when one of my neighbours asked if my my little baby was with me in the room, and I said, ‘No’.

“My neighbour told me she heard the cry of my baby, and I ran outside and started knocking on the door of the defendant which was locked.

“I saw my baby crying on the bed with blood in her private part and met the defendant also naked when I finally opened the door.”

The witness further told the court that the defendant wanted to escape by pulling his window burglary, following her outcry to alert passersby.

She added that some youths in the neighbourhood assisted in apprehending the defendant.

“He was taken to the police station in Ojo Barracks, where I wrote a statement after he was caught, and I was told to take my girl to Mirabel Centre for medical examination,” the witness said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the defence counsel, Samuel Okani, urged the court for an adjournment to enable him to tidy up somethings but Justice Ramon Oshodi overruled his plea.

The judge ruled that defence had more than three months to prepare itself. The witness, under cross-examination, said the alleged incident happened about 3. 00 p.m.

According to her, she allowed her children outside because they usually played in front of the house.

She added that her husband was at home the day the alleged incident happened.

“My husband heard when I was shouting and he came around. There was no fight between my husband and the defendant though the defendant’s mother came to me for settlement but I said, ‘No’ because I want Justice for my baby,” the witness said.

Another witness, the investigative police officer, Inspector Abosede Badmus, attached to Gender Section, Lagos State Police Command, testified that she received a case from Onireke Police Division on December 29, 2021.

The court conducted trial within trial after defence objected the prosecution tendering the statement of the defendant.

Defence argued that the defendant was not the maker of the statement, adding that he was forced to sign the statement.

The IPO, in trial within trial, told the court that she was with her team leader in the charge room when the statement was obtained from the defendant.

She added that the defendant told her he could not write, saying that his lawyer or relative was not present when the defendant signed the statement.

While being examined in the trial within trial, the defendant said he was locked up for four days, adding that he told the IPO that he could not make any statement because he was not himself.

The defendant maintained that what he signed was not his statement.

While under cross-examination by prosecution, the defendant said he was a trailer repairer and had not seen the IPO prior to his arrest.

The case was adjourned till February 7, 2023, for continuation of trial and ruling on the trial within trial.

Governor Soludo presented the appointment letters to the recently recruited 5000 teachers in a televised grand noonday ceremony on Friday, December 2, at the International Convention Centre, Awka.

The gathered teachers and their guests were full of praise for Governor Soludo for having faith in them as a continuation of his open demonstration of transparency and credibility in all sectors in Anambra State.

It was an occasion to savour as Governor Soludo shared ennobling company with the teachers because the governor sees himself, first and foremost, as a teacher having lectured for many years at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and in some other universities all over the world.

Many educationists lauded Governor Soludo for his landmark innovative method of recruiting teachers credibly, transparently and competitively.
Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Professor (Mrs.) Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, who superintended all stages of the recruitment exercise basked in the glory of the moment, attesting to the fact that the process was quite challenging.

She was steadfast in carrying out Governor Soludo’s mandate of making the exercise comprehensively transparent and credible.
It needs to be recalled that following the dearth of teachers in schools as inherited by the administration on assumption of office, Governor Soludo took the immediate decision of the approval for the recruitment of 5,000 teachers.
The competitive process of the recruitment has been described by multiform observers as being the most credible and transparent in recent times.

According to the records, out of the 40,120 candidates who responded to the initial advertisement, 13,500 scaled through the first Computer Based Test (CBT) which had 60 percent as the cut-off mark.

The supplementary test took the cut-off mark down to 55 percent, thereby adding additional 2000 candidates to the number scheduled for the last CBT.
The last CBT was scheduled in six centres at a cut-off mark of 55 percent. The 8,120 successful candidates were scheduled for oral and written interviews.
The successful candidates were determined by adding the last CBT scores and the oral/written interview scores, and dividing by simple average. The cut-off mark was set at 60 percent.

After the painstaking and rigorous exercise, the 5,000 teachers were selected strictly on merit. Anambra children deserve the best/ I will not give to them what I will not give to my own children.

The presentation of the appointment letters to the recruited 5000 teachers on Friday, December 2, at the International Convention Centre, Awka, was the climax of a job well done by Governor Soludo who amidst laud ovation assured them that they will receive their December salaries.

My teachers hated me, because of Fela, says Femi Kuti

Super musician and first son of Afrobeat pioneer, Femi Kuti has relieved his childhood experience during a recent interview where he opened up on his growing up while in school.

The saxophonist and Afrobeat star disclosed that he suffered hatred from some of his school teachers who knew he was one of Fela’s children.

Kuti said that while he expected to be treated fairly, some teachers would pass aggression on to him because of their dislike for Fela.

“School was a very depressing time for me because you had the teachers that liked him and teachers that didn’t like him so if I get into trouble with the teachers that didn’t like Fela they would beat me more because they don’t like my father,” said Femi Kuti.

We are introducing history that teaches our children to know themselves first – HSN President, Prof Okpeh +Photos

President of Historical Society of Nigeria, HSN, Prof Okpeh Okpeh Jr has said the history that will be re-introduced in basic education is going to emphasize that children should know themselves first before any other thing.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was disclosed by the renown historian at a three-day 67th Annual Conference/Congress of Historical Society of Nigeria, HSN with the theme: Nigeria’Historicising Our Connections as a Nation Since the Precolonial Period ‘.

    Hear him:

“The students are not coping, it is too rigorous. We sat down and said those challenges can be addressed by the professional historians and so we decided to trim down the syllabus.

“The history our children are going to be reading is the history that emphasizes knowing yourself first. You cannot know any other person until you have known yourself.

“So who are your heroes? From what village do you come from? Who are your elders? What are your cultures? What can of norms can be have from that culture? These are the things we are emphasising.

“We are also emphasising our bonds of common destiny, our bonds of unity, you know that is a major challenge of national integration. Who are your neighbours? What do you share with your neighbours? How can you build that into a concrete relationship where you have common interest and therefore common destiny; these are the emphasis.

“The syllabus we have now is simplified syllabus that will address national integration problem and therefore promote national development.
Culture is not static, we should also know that culture is dynamic.

“Today you are using android and all kinds of phones to popularize whatever you have in terms of news and all that, it was never like that before. We need to adjust to this culture.

“Our argument and charge is that in an adjusting to this culture including the culture the West has thrown on us, we should do that in the perspective with the deep knowledge from our past, until you understand yourself, you cannot even appreciate what you take from these other people, this is the emphasis. Know your past in order to understand your present and then prepare for the future.

“We are emphasising knowing ourselves, knowing your past on the basis of which you understand where you are today and therefore with the knowledge of the past and where you are today, you will be able to prognosticate the future, that is the core, the kernel of what we are doing.

. . .calls on FG to urgently resolve ASUU unending strike

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has said that teachers form a critical and indispensable part of educational development in the nation, declaring that they deserve commendation and encouragement for their role in driving national development and progress.

Obi, disclosed this in his message to mark World Teachers Day 2022, applauded all teachers in Nigeria for their sacrifice to ensure that Nigerian students, at all levels of learning, receive good educational and moral formation.

He said that by their critical role in moving the educational sector forward, they are helping to drive national growth and development, which education is a critical component of.

Obi encouraged the teachers to strive daily to remain good role models to students, both in learning and in character. He also urged them to continuously improve their knowledge and skills, so as to keep pace with the dynamic and constantly evolving global education system, and be at par with their peers around the world.

The front runner Presidential Candidate lamented that education has continued to suffer untold neglect from the government, thus leading to obvious neglect of teachers’ welfare.

He said that the lingering strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) exemplifies the neglect education has continued to suffer due to bad governance in the country.

“It remains unimaginable that after 8 months of industrial action by the ASUU, the Federal Government is yet to find a lasting solution to the issue which has lingered over the years. How can we achieve a truly progressive nation with education and teachers’ welfare continually relegated to the background,” Obi queried.

He called on the Federal Government to consider the future of the young students, who are the major victims of the ASUU strike, and as a matter of urgency, ensure that the demands of ASUU are resolved so that the students can return to school.

Obi recalled his years as the Governor of Anambra State, how the State soared in educational development, maintaining the first position in WAEC and NECO during his administration. He revealed that the teachers in the State played a significant role in that glorious achievement.

“Just as we managed, motivated and encouraged the teachers to give their best during my years as Governor of the State, we will ensure that teachers in Nigeria are well trained and motivated to remain productive in their duties, under my watch, when elected the President of the country,” Obi added.

Teacher pleads guilty for giving her pupils cupcakes filled with sperm

A 46 years old shamed Louisiana teacher has confessed to serving her students cupcakes that contained sperm from her ex-husband, who is awaiting his own trial on child sex crime charges.

Cynthia Perkins, who pleaded guilty to “horrific crimes” against children and is facing a 41-year prison sentence and has accepted a plea deal on Monday February 17. Her decision led to 68 charges being dismissed after she also agreed to testify against her ex-husband, Dennis Perkins.

The former middle school teacher pleaded guilty to second-degree rape, producing child pornography, and conspiracy of tampering with harmful substances.

Cynthia and Dennis were arrested in October 2019 and faced 150 felony charges including rape, child pornography, sexual battery of a child, and video voyeurism. There were also charges relating to a dog, according to the Daily Star.

The couple were busted after authorities received a tip at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Investigators later found nude photos of them with the minor.

Court documents obtained by WBRZ in May, 2021, revealed that police also found pictures of Perkins’ students eating the semen-laced cupcakes and that the couple allegedly raped a child between the ages of 9 and 10.

Cynthia filed for divorce and resigned from her role as an English teacher at the high school after the arrest. She claimed she was manipulated by her then-husband to commit the horror crimes, WBRZ reports. The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office immediately fired Dennis Perkins, who had been a special operations lieutenant.

The former couple had also been hit with four lawsuits accusing them of feeding baked goods containing Dennis’ semen to Cynthia’s class at Westside Junior High School on two separate occasions in 2018 and 2019.

One of the complaints alleged that the father of a student who ate the contaminated cupcakes has fallen into a debilitating depression over the incident and has not been able to find gainful employment.

Another lawsuit claimed that a student and a parent have been afflicted by mental health and behavioral problems, and have not been able to sleep since the cupcakes incident.

In a suit filed last May, a student’s parents alleged that Cynthia showed the girl inappropriate images, and that she also photographed and videotaped the minor. All four lawsuits, which were filed separately, also accused the Livingston Parish School Board of negligence.

It remains unclear at this time if the lawsuits will be taken any further.
