  • Police detain teacher for brutalising pupil

The Lagos State Police Command has detained a teacher, Chuks Igbani, for allegedly brutalising a pupil in the Igborosun area of Badagry.

A clip that went viral on social media reveals Igbani beating the pupil violently with a cane and pushing her against some furniture.

The pupil is heard saying she wants to die, as the teacher asks her to die while hitting her.

At a point in the video, the pupil agrees to read, but Igbani continues flogging her.

Some Nigerians on Twitter called for the arrest of the teacher and the shutdown of the centre.

@geedayyy wrote, “The teacher should just cool off in the prison for three months first before any trial starts. The little girl was even saying that she would read; that man is a beast and a monster.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the teacher was arrested on Wednesday and would be charged.

“The man was arrested by policemen from the Badagry division and he is in custody,” he added.

However, the Public Affairs Officer, Ministry of Education, Kayode Abayomi, said the government had sent a team to investigate the incident.

He said, “The Ministry of Education has sent some staff to investigate it. The place is an unregistered centre, but the ministry still awaits the report of the team to know the next line of action. But one thing I am certain about is that once the centre is not approved by the state government, it will be closed down.”

  • When Failure Becomes a Teacher, By Cornelius Afebu Omonokhua

When Failure Becomes a Teacher, By Cornelius Afebu Omonokhua

    By Cornelius Afebu Omonokhua

Human beings naturally fear failure especially the failure that could lead to suffering here and hereafter. The mission of every responsible human being is to work out his or her salvation. This is why every human being ought to be docile to the will of God who wants every human being to love him, serve him and be happy with him on the last day. Human beings need to strive to avoid sin whether venial or mortal. In life, awareness of eschatology (life, death, heaven or hell) should propel people to seek forgiveness and repentance. In striving for perfection, human beings fall into sin given the frailty of human nature. A Saint is a sinner who keeps trying. Each fall takes a Saint to a desert of deep reflection to resolve to keep going no matter the ugly past. Each failure becomes a teacher for the Saint while a Sinner who does not care about repentance dies and perishes in pride and self-righteousness. Those who take salvation as a serious mission use failure to their advantage by struggling to overcome predominant faults. Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: robbers, evildoers, adulterers or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tithe of all I get.’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God” (Luke 18:10-14).

The tax collector knows himself well while the Pharisee trust in his external religious rituals. This shows that holiness and union with God is not restricted to external display of religious piety. Regard for a fellow human being is deeper than external religiosity. The Pharisee had no right to judge the Tax Collector. Do not judge and you will not be judged (Luke 6:37). Jesus says this because, human judgement is based on feelings. Human beings judge with human lens with the aim of wanting to create the other person in his own image and likeness. The Pharisee prays even in the middle of the road, market square for others to notice him. Jesus says, “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness!’ Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:22-24).

No matter how you pray, pay tithes, fast and do pilgrimages without doing what would enhance the life of fellow human beings, you cannot be in union with God. Jesus says, whatsoever you do to the least of your brothers and sisters, you do unto me (Matthew 25:34-46). These are standards by which human beings should measure their failures and successes. In life, failure could be a teacher akin to a well-trained archer who always aim to get the target. He does not give up after missing the target with one arrow. A well trained archer does not mine to shoot as many arrows as possible to hit his target. Failure enables those who keep trying to excel. Saul was regarded as a chronic sinner because of the way and manner he persecuted the Christians before his encounter with Jesus on the way to Damascus (Acts 9). Having accepted the Christian faith, his name changed from Saul to Paul a name he was called for the first time on the island of Cyprus (Acts 13:9). Paul did not allow his past to drag him to the mud. Luke, the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostle became a Christian through the mission of Paul who was called Saul of Tarsus. His mother was a Jew and his father was a Roman. Tarsus in Cilicia is in south-central Turkey and located on the Tarsus River, about twelve miles from the Mediterranean Sea coast (Acts 22:3). Paul is a model of the Saints who keep trying without giving up.

Sometimes, trials, temptations and suffering can distract human beings from a desired vision. The mission of Paul teaches us that nothing is difficult for a willing heart. Paul narrated his experience in his journey of faith and his struggle for salvation. “We are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So then death is working in us, but life in you” (2 Corinthians 4:8-12). He wrote to Timothy, “But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, long suffering, love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra and out of them all the Lord delivered me” (2 Timothy 3:10-11).

Paul perceived sin as a result of the agent of Satan that humbles him to depend on the grace of God which was sufficient for him. This gave him courage to cope with the “thorn in his flesh” (2 Corinthians 12: 6-7). This thorn caused him sorrow and hardship. The thorn even in a Rose flower is a symbol of pain and pleasure. At last the thorn is a sign of Christ’s victory. Jesus was crowned with thorns during his passion. Paul wrote to the Corinthians that he had fought with beasts at Ephesus (1 Corinthians 15:32). In his second letter to the Corinthians, he said, “We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So then death is working in us, but life in you” (2 Corinthians 4: 8-12).

According to tradition, Paul was beheaded in Rome and thus died as a martyr for his faith. His death could have been a result of the execution of Christians by the Roman emperor Nero who accused the Christians of causing the fire outbreak in 64 CE in Rome. Paul said in his second letter to Timothy. “My life has been poured out like a libation, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing (2 Timothy 4:6-8). Failure becomes valuable when a person refuses to give up the struggle.

Sometimes, failure in an aspect of life could be a sign that God has something better for a person. My failures in life have given me better opportunities. “Like a well-trained Archer, my failure is my teacher.” Many great people in history who had records of failures came to the awareness that failure could be a stepping-stone to success. Failures teach people the value of life, love, goals, happiness and destiny. If you fall, do not remain on the spot, get up and keep trying. Nigeria should not be perceived as a failed nation that can never rise again. We must individually pick up the pieces of Nigeria to grow a nation that would be an admiration to the whole world. Our individual and collective efforts should urge us on to greater heights on earth and finally to attain salvation and final union with God.

Teacher, 51, caught after having sex with 14-year-old boy for over 15 times

A married high school teacher in Chicago, Illinois has been accused of plying a 14-year-old boy with excessive sex at her home, in hotels and in her car, prosecutors claim.

Dayna Chidester, 51, from Illinois, was arrested by FBI agents after it was alleged she had sex with the minor ’15-20 times’ between September and December 2018.

Chidester, who worked as a consumer and family science at Reed-Custer High School, appeared at Dirksen U.S. Courthouse where prosecutors claimed she should be held without bond.

They argued she poses a flight risk and a danger to the community.

She had been freed on a $1 million bond on sex abuse charges filed in January which arose from the same investigation.

However the state charges were dropped on Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, Chidester texted another student at her school, saying she was disgusted by her actions with the boy, who did not attend the school.

In it she allegedly claimed: ‘It’s horrible. (I) can go to jail.’ She now also faces child pornography charges in addition to sexual abuse charges.

Officials in Will County became aware in December that Chidester was texting the student about her sexual relationship with the alleged victim.1

Will County investigators later searched the boy’s cellphone and found nude photos of Chidester.

There also over 9,000 text messages between the pair beginning in September 2018, according to the complaint.

The two also exchanged hundreds of phone calls over the same time frame.

In an interview on January 2, the alleged victim told investigators he had engaged in sex with Chidester ’15-20 times.’

  • Teacher rapes, impregnates 12-year-old student

A 12-year-old schoolgirl has been raped by her teacher in Namtari, a community in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

According to reports, she was confirmed pregnant on Thursday by a referral centre that admitted her for care.

Bashir Tahir, a member of the Adamawa Hope Center located at the state Specialist Hospital in Yola where the girl was rushed to, confirmed Thursday that the girl had been put in the family way as a result of the rape perpetrated by her class teacher, Nathan Yusuf.

“She has received all the needed support and the medical tests required.

“So far she is free from all sexually transmitted diseases. But she will start receiving anti-natal care next week at the Hope Center,” Bashir said.

The Adamawa State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which arrested the teacher, has assured that he would be made to answer for his act.

The state Commandant of the corps, Abdullahi Nuruddeen, told newsmen on Thursday during a briefing in his office: “I always charge my men not to relent in their effort on arrest and prosecution of crimes, more especially the ones endangering the life of people like rape cases.

”On 2nd September, 2019, around 2:30 pm, we arrested a suspect of rape in person of Nathan Yusuf (37) who is a teacher at Gurel Primary School Namtari, Yola South, suspected to have raped his primary school pupil who is below 14 years of age, which he confessed to have given her codeine syrup before raping her.

“As soon as we finish our investigation, the suspect will be charged to court.

“We are advising parents to be very vigilant o their children and report such crimes to the relevant authorities for judicial action.”

An uncle of the victim, Sulaiman Namtari, who also spoke to newsmen, said the action of the teacher shocked the community because he was held in high esteem.

He said: “Every member of the community reserves tremendous respect for the teacher as he has been in the community for years.

“There is no house he doesn’t enter and every member of the community knows him very well. What he did was a perfidy of the highest order and for that we want authorities not to spare him.”

The suspect confessed to the act and promised he would take care of the baby after delivery.

He also said he would take full responsibility for his action.

  • Female teacher jailed 20 yrs for sleeping with 13-year-old pupil

A school teacher in Arizona, the South-West region of United States of America, Brittany Zamora, has been convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for having sex with her underage pupil.
According to the Punch metro, Zamora, who has since been dismissed from her job, had pleaded guilty to ‘improper behaviour’ with her 13-year-old pupil.
She admitted to 10 counts of sexual misconduct with the pupil, in addition to two counts of child molestation and another two counts of exposing him to sexually explicit materials.
Twenty-eight-year-old Zamora is married, and had worked as a sixth-grade teacher from Las Brisas Academy in Arizona until 2018 when her victim’s parents saw an offensive text message on their son’s phone. Zamora owned up to sending the message.
The parents told prosecutors that they regularly monitor their son’s phone with an app.
“In one such text message, the teacher told the 13-year-old student she wanted to have sex with him every day with no time limit,” prosecutors said.
“The boy also replied to her and even sent love notes in class with ‘U R SEXY’ written on them,” the Police added.
They subsequently exchanged a series of sexually explicit text messages until the boy’s parents became aware of the relationship.
The underage boy admitted to having sex with Zamora and she was reported to the school and police.
The boy said their relationship started in a classroom chat group when his teacher started flirting with him and began sending him naked pictures of herself.
The teacher and the boy had sex in Zamora’s car, as well as in one of the classrooms in the academy while a classmate of the teen kept a lookout.
“Brittany Zamora betrayed our trust and changed (him) forever. Before, he was an innocent child, and now she stole his innocence from him.
“I hate Brittany Zamora for what she did to my son and family,” the boy’s mother said in a victim impact statement read to the court.

  • ‘2,300 teachers killed, 1,000 schools destroyed by Boko Haram’

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) says Boko Haram has killed 2,300 teachers in Nigeria’s northeast since the start of the insurgency in 2009.

According to the 2018 UNESCO global education monitoring report (GEM), the UN agency said 19,000 teachers have been displaced in the region, affecting access to education.

“In north-eastern Nigeria, as of late 2017, there were 1.6 million IDPs, including an estimated 700,000 school-age children, as a result of violent attacks on civilians by Boko Haram, which began in 2009 (UNOCHA, 2017b),” the report read in part.

“Boko Haram has destroyed nearly 1,000 schools and displaced 19,000 teachers (HRW, 2016). Reports indicated it had killed almost 2,300 teachers by 2017 (UNOCHA, 2017a).

“The latest education needs assessment found that out of 260 school sites, 28% had been damaged by bullets, shells or shrapnel, 20% had been deliberately set on fire, 32% had been looted and 29% had armed groups or military in close proximity.”

UNESCO decried the shortage of qualified teachers in the northeast, stating security and poor remuneration as reasons why the teachers are emigrating from the region.

“Ongoing safety concerns, coupled with teacher salaries that do not cover even basic expenses and delays in payment, perpetuate a shortage of qualified teachers,” UNESCO added.

“Most of those who remain work on a voluntary basis”.

The report also revealed that there is a shortage of teachers in the Almajiri school system, predominant in northern Nigeria.

“In the almajiri system, a teacher can be responsible for up to 100 students, predominantly poor boys who often end up on the street begging for alms,” the report read.

A 29-year-old teacher, David Ikejiobi, is to cool his heels in prison for allegedly raping one of his students, an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court ruled on Thursday.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr P. E Nwaka, had refused to take the plea of the accused and remanded him in Kirikiri Prison.

Earlier, Police Prosecutor Christopher John told the court that the offence was committed sometime in March at 25, Abiola Alao St., Ijeshatedo, Lagos.

John said the accused always followed the 13 year-old girl to her home after school.

“The girl’s guardian used to come home in the evening and the girl gets home before them and opens the door with the extra key with her.

“The accused knew about the arrangement and follows her to her house. He raped the girl on three different occasions and warned the girl not to tell anyone,” he said.

John added that the girl’s grandmother saw some changes in her behaviour when she went to spend her holidays with her and the woman asked some questions.

“It was then the girl opened up to the grandmother and told her about the accused.”

The offence contravened Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which attracts life imprisonment.
