How fraudulent persons hack social media apps – NCC-CSIRT

A new method has been devised by hackers to take over people’s messaging app on social media, the Nigerian Communications Commission Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has revealed.

According to NCC-CSIRT, the discovery affect Virtual Private Network (VPN) which in turn compromise the messaging app.

Meanwhile, the CSIRT has warned app users not to underestimate the two-factor authentication to protect their Telegram accounts and to not download unknown Advanced IP Scanner Software.

Using the Telegram app as a case study, a Ukrainian cyber expert dissected method used by hackers to carry out their hatchet job.

The Ukrainian cyber experts discovered the attack, which uses Vidar Malware (Vidar Stealer) to steal Telegram session data, which in the absence of configured two-factor authentication and a passcode, allows unauthorized access to the victim’s telegram account and corporate account or network.

The malware, which exploits unauthorized access to users’ Telegram accounts and corporate accounts to steal data, targets platforms across iOS, Android, Linux, Mac and Windows Operating Systems.

“The Ukrainian CERT alleged that a Somnia Ransomware was created to be used on Telegram that tricks users to download an installer that mimics ‘Advanced IP Scanner’ software, which contains Vidar Malware. The installer infects the system with the Vidar stealer, which steals the victim’s Telegram session data to take control of their account.

“The threat actors abuse the victim’s Telegram account in some unspecified manner to steal VPN connection data (authentication and certificates). If the VPN account is not protected by two-factor authentication passcode, the hackers use it to gain unauthorized access to the victim’s employer’s corporate network”, the alert and advisory states.

“Once inside, the intruders conduct reconnaissance work using tools like Netscan, Rclone, Anydesk, and Ngrok, to perform various surveillance and remote access activities, and then deploy a Cobalt Strike beacon, exfiltrating data using the Rclone program,” the report stated.

The CSIRT is the telecom sector’s cyber security incidence centre set up by the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecom sector and as they may affect telecom consumers and citizens at large.

The CSIRT also works collaboratively with ngCERT, established by the Federal Government to reduce the volume of future computer risk incidents by preparing, protecting, and securing Nigerian cyberspace to forestall attacks and problems or related events.

The Nigerian Communications Commission ( NCC) is the independent regulatory authority for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria. The NCC was created under Decree number 75 by the Federal Military Government of Nigeria on 24 November 1992.

  • What is Signal and why are people leaving WhatsApp?

What is Signal and why are people leaving WhatsApp?

Signal has emerged as one of the top alternatives to WhatsApp recently, with WhatsApp’s updated privacy policy causing an outrage on the Internet.

Many people have declared their intention to delete WhatsApp and switch to Signal. If you were wondering what the fuss is all about, here’s a primer on Signal to answer all of your questions.

Should you download Signal? Who owns Signal? Is Signal safe? Keep reading for all the answers.

    What is Signal?

Signal is an encrypted app that lets you send messages and make calls via the Internet. Signal’s USP is its focus on privacy. It supports group chats and group video calls too. Signal is open source and its code is peer-reviewed, which means that its privacy and security is regularly checked by independent experts.

    Signal app owner

Signal was created by Moxie Marlinspike, an American cryptographer. The app as we know it today is developed by the Signal Foundation and Signal Messenger. Signal Foundation was founded on January 10, 2018, and a former co-founder of WhatsApp, Brian Acton, made an initial funding of $50 million.

    Signal app download

The Signal app is available on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Linux, although you can only sign up via Android or iPhone. Once you have set up an account, you can link Signal to your iPad or your computer, and use the app even if your phone is switched off.

    Signal vs Telegram vs WhatsApp

While every app has its strengths and weaknesses, Signal’s biggest strength is its focus on privacy, which means that it encrypts texts, calls, group calls, and even gif searches. While Signal works perfectly well as a messaging app, its chat backup and restore mechanism isn’t the most consumer-friendly.

If you are switching phones, you will need to follow slightly convoluted steps to carry your chats to the new device and in our experience with Signal on iPhone, this process doesn’t always work. The Signal vs Telegram vs WhatsApp debate will eventually be settled by your social circle. If most of them switch away from WhatsApp and stay there, then you’ll know which is the best messaging app of them all.

    Signal Foundation

Signal Foundation, officially known as Signal Technology Foundation, is the non-profit behind the Signal app. Its mission is “to develop open source privacy technology that protects free expression and enables secure global communication”. At the moment Signal Foundation’s focus is on the messaging app, but it eventually plans to promote other privacy preserving projects too.

    Is Signal app really safe?

Signal is one of the most secure messaging apps that you can use right now. Apart from CEOs like Elon Musk, the famous whistleblower Edward Snowden also recommends Signal. It’s end-to-end encryption is so trusted that WhatsApp also adopted the same, and it is used for pretty much all of its features, which means that it’s extremely difficult for others to spy on your conversations. You can also enable additional security features such as requiring a second password (other than the OTP) to log in to Signal on new devices, biometric authentication, etc.

    Is Signal better than WhatsApp?

In terms of privacy features, Signal is better than WhatsApp. However, if you care about app features and who’s using the messaging app, then WhatsApp is ahead. The most important part of any messaging app are the people who use it. If your entire social circle is on WhatsApp, then no amount of features can make Signal more appealing.

    Why should I use Signal?

Signal’s primary goal is to provide you with a platform where you can communicate without worrying about being spied on. If that appeals to you, Signal might be a good fit for you. WhatsApp’s privacy issues have been in the news recently, with Facebook declaring its intention to use your chat data for advertising and exposing group chats to the public via a simple Google search. Signal is a much more private alternative where the parent company’s business interests don’t clash with your privacy.

WhatsApp works on another Telegram feature

WhatsApp will get another Telegram feature as the messaging platform works to make many features found in competitors such as Viber, WeChat and Signal available for its users.

Although WhatsApp is the most used messaging application, it is still not at the desired level. WhatsApp is working on the Telegram-like disappearing message feature.

With messaging applications being a part of our lives, the importance of privacy has started to increase.

It has been leaked that the disappearing message feature that Telegram users have been using for a long time will soon be available in WhatsApp.

There have been claims about this feature for a while but it is not yet known when the feature will be activated for users.

The company announced that it will activate this feature on Android, iOS, Web and Desktop applications.

Some of the explanations about the new feature are as follows:

If people using the disappearing messages feature do not open the WhatsApp application within 7 days, the messages will disappear directly. However, the preview of messages may still appear in notifications.

When you quote a message while using the disappear message feature, it may appear in the quoted part even if the original message is deleted.

When forwarded to a chat with the disappearing message feature inactive, the other chat message remains even if the original message is deleted.

Once the chat with the lost messages is backed up, all messages are in backup. However, lost messages are deleted when restoring from the backup.

Telegram launches video call service, eyes videoconferencing

Instant messaging app, Telegram, has launched a video call service as part of activities marking its seventh anniversary.

In a blog post, the company said the video feature was added in response to the need for face-to-face communication as the world goes virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“2020 highlighted the need for face-to-face communication, and our alpha version of video calls is now available on both Android and iOS.

“You can start a video call from your contact’s profile page, and switch video on or off at any time during voice calls.

“Like all other video content on Telegram, video calls support picture-in-picture mode, allowing you to scroll through chats and multitask, while maintaining eye contact,” the company said.

It explained that the video calls were protected with end-to-end encryption, with the security confirmed by matching emojis shown on-screen on both ends of the line.

“If they match, your call is 100 per cent secured by time-tested encryption also used in Telegram’s Secret Chats and Voice Calls,” it added.

The company disclosed that it was also working to add more features and improvements to the video call package, including group video calls in the coming months.

“The upcoming feature will allow the app to jump into the videoconferencing market, which has become more crucial as people stay at home amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” it added.

Telegram was founded by two Russian brothers, Nikolai and Pavel Durov, in 2013 with its headquarters in London and operational centre in Dubai.

The company said it currently had no fewer than 400 million active users, from 100,000 as of October, 2013.

Telegram’s video feature is coming about four years after its rival, WhatsApp, launched the same app in 2016.

  • Suicide bombers deploy Telegram app in Saint Petersburg bombing

Investigation by Russia’s FSB security agency on Monday has revealed that Telegram messaging service was used by those behind the Saint Petersburg metro bombing.

“During the probe into the April 3 terrorist attack in the Saint Petersburg metro, the FSB received reliable information about the use of Telegram by the suicide bomber, his accomplices and their mastermind abroad to conceal their criminal plans,” the FSB said in a statement.

The FSB statement said that the terrorists used the Telegram app “at each stage of the preparation of this terrorist attack”.

The Saint Petersburg bombing took the lives of fifteen people, and the Imam Shamil Battalion, a group suspected to have links to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility of the attack.

Telegram is a free Russian-designed messaging app that lets people exchange messages, photos and videos in groups of up to 5,000.

It has attracted about 100 million users since its launch in 2013.

But the service has drawn the ire of critics who say it can let criminals and terrorists communicate without fear of being tracked by police, pointing in particular to its use by Islamic State jihadists.

The app is one of several targeted in a legal crackdown by Russian authorities on the internet and on social media sites in particular.

Since January 1, internet companies have been required to store all users’ personal data at data centres in Russia and provide it to the authorities on demand.

Draft legislation that has already secured initial backing in Russian parliament would make it illegal for messaging services to have anonymous users, but Telegram’s Russian chief executive, Pavel Durov feels this will compromise the privacy of the app users.

He stressed that compromising the privacy of Telegram’s users would force them, including “high-ranking Russian officials,” to communicate via apps based in the United States like Facebook-owned WhatsApp.

32-year-old Durov created Russia’s popular VKontakte social media site before founding Telegram in the United States.
