  • Criticism really gets to modern players – Eric ten Hag

Criticism really gets to modern players – Eric ten Hag

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says modern players struggle to deal with criticism and that his generation had “much thicker skin”.

The 55-year-old Dutchman was sacked by United in October, three months after he signed a new two-year contract.

His tenure included several issues and disputes with players.

Speaking to SEG Stories, external – a media outlet attached to his management agency – Ten Hag said: “This generation usually find it difficult to deal with criticism. Criticism really gets to them.

“The generation that I grew up in had much thicker skin. You could be much more direct.

“I was approached much more directly. If I would do that with my current group of players I would demotivate them.

“If you do that to the current generation they find it offensive.”

Ten Hag won the FA Cup and League Cup during his two full seasons at United, but they finished eighth in the table last season, their worst Premier League finish.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract was terminated midway through Ten Hag’s first season after he gave an interview to Piers Morgan in which he said he did not respect Ten Hag.

Jadon Sancho was banished from the first-team squad after accusing Ten Hag of making him a “scapegoat” following criticism of his performances in training.

Ten Hag disciplined Marcus Rashford last year for missing training following an unauthorised trip to Belfast.

Former United defender Raphael Varane last week said he was surprised the club gave Ten Hag a new contract because his connection with the players “no longer existed”.

I don’t understand Ten Hag Man Utd rotations – Rooney

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has ripped into the club’s manager this week.

Rooney was on the Stick to Football podcast with the likes of Gary Neville and Roy Keane.

He spoke about United boss Erik ten Hag’s decision to take off Marcus Rashford at half-time of their 3-3 draw with FC Porto recently.

Speaking on Stick to Football,  Plymouth boss Rooney said: “Some of the changes he is making… You never see top teams changing their centre-backs during the game – or the back four – and that happens on a regular basis.

‘The Rashford one… That was the best I’ve seen him play (v Porto) for a long time and to take him off at half-time and say we’ve got another game at the weekend is crazy.

“I guarantee on this international break you see videos of him training with a coach away from the training ground – so if he can’t do two games in a week, he should have been resting.”

Europa: Ten Hag explains halftime Rashford change

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has explained why Marcus Rashford was substituted this week.

The forward came off at half-time of United’s Europa League game against FC Porto.

Many fans thought Rashford may have been injured, but Ten Hag confirmed it was rotation.

“He is okay,” the Dutchman told MUTV, warding off any worries of an injury issue. “But also Alejandro Garnacho, he is, in the season, our attacking threat in this moment, and we brought him from the bench.

“We need fresh players also for Sunday so, yes, it was all in the plan.”

He added to TNT Sports: “We have to rotate. Garnacho, we didn’t start him. He had a great game, not only on Sunday, but I think in the whole season. We sub them because on Sunday we have another hard game, a good game, so we need players to be available and be fit and be fresh.

“It’s a quick turnaround to Villa. They have a day longer (to recover) and we have an away game, so we want fresh players on the pitch.”

‘You’re not OK’ – Ten Hag blasts Redknapp

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag hit out at pundit Jamie Redknapp after their 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

Former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp questioned Ten Hag’s decision to bench Marcus Rashford before kickoff. The attacker had scored three goals in the previous two games.

Redknapp said: “It feels like something untoward has gone on. You don’t drop a player that’s scored two in midweek and one against Southampton. It feels like something has happened this week.”

In response, Ten Hag snapped: “I heard already speculation from some pundits. That is crazy.“I would almost say that, as a person, you are not OK when you bring such speculation if you don’t know. This has nothing to do with it.

“I’m very happy with Marcus, with everything.

“With his defending part, offensive, he scores in this moment, he performs very good.

“So there is nothing to do with it that he was on the bench, just rotation.

“We have many games to cover. We have more than a starting 11 of players.

“If the players perform, we will give them their chances.”

Ten Hag denies Casemiro left Old Trafford at halftime

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag rejected claims that Casemiro had left Old Trafford at halftime of yesterday’s defeat to Liverpool.

Casemiro was at fault for Luis Diaz’s two goals before the break and was promptly replaced by Ten Hag for youngster Toby Collyer.

During the second-half, there were claims Casemiro had left the stadium and traveled home.

But after the 3-0 reverse, Ten Hag told talkSPORT: “It’s not true. He was in the dressing room. I just met him.”

Casemiro’s deal with United runs to 2026.

Man Utd: Ten Hag defends Rashford’s poor form

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has come to the defence of Marcus Rashford.

The England and United forward has been in the firing line for his poor displays over the past 12 months.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer criticized Rashford on BBC’s Match of the Day, stating: Shearer said: “He’s had two games this season Marcus Rashford and he’s not had one shot at goal.

“Fifty-seven goals they (Man Utd) scored last season. That was the worst in the top half. Ruud van Nistelrooy has been brought into there. He’s going to have to work his magic somehow.”

In response, Ten Hag told reporters: “Everyone gets criticism from you guys, it doesn’t matter what we are doing, if we are winning or if we are losing.

“If I take a player off, the conclusion is I was not happy with him. But I was very happy with Rashy in pre-season, against Fulham (in the opening game) and also against Brighton.

“I didn’t take him off because his performances or level were not right – no, we had to rotate because we have good players on the bench who bring new energy.

“There will be rotation. Then there is the conclusion the player is not performing. It can be sometimes but definitely it wasn’t in this case. In this case, it was stupid analysis from the pundit.”

  • EPL: United coach, Ten Hag blames three players for loss to Brighton

EPL: United coach, Ten Hag blames three players for loss to Brighton

Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, has criticized three of his players following their 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday.

The Red Devils were hoping to build on their 1-0 victory in their Premier League opener as they traveled to the Amex Stadium.

However, a first-half goal from former United striker Danny Welbeck put Brighton in the lead. Although Amad Diallo managed to equalize, Brighton secured a late winner through João Pedro. United also had a goal from Alejandro Garnacho disallowed after Joshua Zirkzee was ruled offside.

For Brighton’s winning goal, Antony’s weak challenge allowed Simon Adingra to create space in the box. Meanwhile, Diogo Dalot, Kobbie Mainoo, and Noussair Mazraoui failed to close down the player as the cross was delivered.

“We didn’t stop the cross,” Ten Hag remarked. “There were three players. Adingra is a right-footed player—send him down the line, send him wide instead of letting him cut in and deliver the cross. We need to address this.”

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has praised winger Jadon Sancho this week.

The Englishman is back in favor at Old Trafford after half a season away on loan at Borussia Dortmund.

Ten Hag and Sancho have patched up their relationship, with the latter in line to start against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

On Sancho’s versatility, Ten Hag told reporters: “Jadon can play across the whole frontline.

“He’s an option for more than one position and it depends how you set up the team, you can look at your own tactics, opponents that fit the best and Jadon had some abilities you can use in a game, tactics and the next game.”

Erik ten Hag faults Southgate tactics in Euro win

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was unimpressed with the tactics of England manager Gareth Southgate.

The Dutchman was on punditry duties in the Netherlands for England’s Euro 2024 opener against Serbia.

Ten Hag, who also confirmed he was staying on as United manager, delivered a sharp verdict on England after they won 1-0.

On Dutch broadcaster NOS, he said: “In the first half I really enjoyed Jude Bellingham. He took England by the hand and lifted them to a higher level.”

He continued: “England were playing very passive. I actually saw them moving backwards, they kept Serbia coming at them.”

He added: “It’s the vision of the manager (Southgate). England will take a 1-0 lead, then he (Southgate) decides to start gambling with making his team compact and relying on moments for the remaining minutes of the game.”
