Teni opens up on being body shamed, losing father

Nigerian singer, Teni has opened up on how she handles the loss of her father, Simeon Apata who was murdered in 1995.

My dad just a genius, he was a man that can foresee and plan for his generations to come. He deserves to be idolized. For that reason, I am always grateful to him because, even after his death, I was still able to go to school in America, I was still able to live a decent life”.

On what makes her amiable and authentic, Teni stated: “Most times people can tell who is genuine.I feel like, I have never been who I am not. That’s the only way I knew, I have never known how to be something else.I will be unhappy if I am not.My confidence comes from my mother and it also comes from knowing who my father was”.

Being a super star comes with its own downsides. Teni though loved by man, has been bashed by fans over her weight.

Asked how she reacts to those who body shamed her, she said: “Just because someone is fat, doesn’t mean they are not healthy. You might be skinny, are you healthy?I get checked like two to three times a year.I am fine.Worry about yourself.I am fine. My cholesterol is okay, my heart is okay.I know at times it’s from a good place”, she said.

  • BBNaija: Teni’s purported tribal comment on Erica turns Twitter clash

BBNaija: Teni’s purported tribal comment on Erica turns Twitter clash

Afro-pop singer, Teni has been condemned on social media for referring to disqualified BBNaija housemate, Erica as ‘Omo Igbo’

TheNewsGuru reports that Teni in one of her videos, while expressing her love for Laycon said, “Eyin Omo Igbo” which means “You Igbo People” “Won ti sepe fu Laycon” meaning “they have cursed/jazzed Laycon”

Teni also counseled ‘Omo Igbos’ to leave Laycon alone.

A cross-section of Nigerians on social media are now of the opinion that the ‘Fargin’ singer was shading Erica.

This has led to tribal clash on Twitter with people from the eastern part of the country referring to Teni as a tribalist.

    Read the comment below:

@SiriKwado “Nobody will see anything wrong in Teni addressing Erica as “Omo Igbo” but if an Igbo celeb like Genevieve Nnaji addresses Laycon as “Onye ofe mmanụ” in a solidarity video for Erica just like Teni did, there will be outrage everywhere. Hypocritical lots!

@Iamriel7 “If you think Teni saying omo igbo is demeaning, I beg that you stop calling foreigners ‘Onyibo people’

@Tonybright01 “If you say Teni was curssing by referring to Erica as “ Omo Igbo” then Erica was also cursing by calling your
favorite housemate ‘chicken drumstick’ let’s all be cursing together.”

@Afamdeluxo “Teni you don’t address Erica as “Omo Igbo”. Same way I don’t expect Rita Dominic or any Igbo celeb to address Laycon as “Onye ofe mmanụ”. Don’t be divisive in your quest for votes. ”

@AbdulganiyuH “The meaning of omo lgbo is simply lgbo girl so what is bad about it and what is hypothetical?

@RealistHenry “First of all, she has a name, her name is Erica, that should be enough description for a person known that much. The extra “omo Igbo” is unnecessary, reeks of tribalism. Just make your point without the tag, just thinking if she was to say something nice, would she recall to add tag?

@Lollypizzle “Teni called Erica “Omo Igbo,” you are getting angry because this is Twitter. Offline, people call people “Omo igbo” “Aboki” “Alhaja” etc, and we all live in peace but once it’s Twitter, you all are moving mad and stupidly sensitive because you have 10mb data. Oshisco.”

@NoniiRoyal “It is not the meaning of a word that is the problem but the tone and the context. I hate that Omo Igbo with passion, Yorubas use it in a derogatory way.”

  • BBNaija: Laycon under spiritual attack-Teni

    BBNaija: Laycon under spiritual attack-Teni

Popular Nigerian songstress, Teni has stated that Laycon, a housemate in the ongoing Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality TV show, is under a “spiritual love attack”.

The singer made this known In a now-viral video shared on her Twitter page.

The ‘Billionaire’ singer in the clip can be seen, in the company of her crew, praying to God to release Laycon from every spirit that may want to stray him from his purpose in the reality show.

“You Igbo people, leave Laycon alone. Erica has… They’ve laid a curse on Laycon. Laycon is under a spiritual love attack. He must be released. Every spirit of mumu, ode, oponu, be released,” she said.

Teni’s prayer comes at about the same time when Erica said she cannot date Laycon because she is not attracted to him.

Laycon, whose real name is Olamilekan Agbeleshe, had recently admitted his feelings for Erica with the latter turning down the former’s request for a serious relationship.

TheNewsGuru reports that Erica seems to prefer the glamorous Terseer Kiddwaya

During a conversation with Tolani Shobajo, Erica had said she would still not have accepted Laycon’s relationship proposal even if Kiddwaya is not in the picture.

“The thing is that even if Kiddwaya is not in the picture, I will still not date Laycon. I have always told him that anytime we have a conversation. I’m not attracted to him,” she had said.

“I grew up being exposed to a lot of culture and one essential part of that is praise-singing people. I decided to incorporate that practice into my songs so that people could relate more with them,” she said.

  • Why Teni will dominate the Nigerian entertainment scene in 2020

Why Teni will dominate the Nigerian entertainment scene in 2020

Truth be told, If you are asked to predict an artiste that is capable of ruling the Nigerian airwaves, you are likely not to choose the high-spirited Teniola Apata a.k.a Teni the entertainer. She is an unlikely pop star and doesn’t cut the image of your usual Nigerian pop diva. Surprisingly the singer born to a Nigerian civil war-hero father, has become of the country’s most sought after entertainers in a short while.

Her music is anchored by empathy; it comes from the point of view of an artiste who knows the challenges of her audience and just simply sings about them. Teni’s amazing music versatility is as a result of her early exposure to the Juju and highlife melodies of the likes of King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey , Victor Olaiya and lot’s more.

So why would Teni rule the Nigerian entertainment terrain in 2020? One trait you cannot take away from her would be her originality. The ‘Askamaya’ crooner doesn’t take herself too seriously. She is like the girl-next-door who you can relate with .This same authenticity has earned her a devout following, all thanks to her hilarious Instagram videos. In an era where star power relies not just on talent but on relatability, Teni’s originality perhaps is one of her secret weapons. She said in an interview: “Everybody used to say ‘Teni you have to look like this, you have to do this.’ I needed to prove to a lot of people – not the naysayers, – but the young girls like myself, you can be yourself and win.”

Another factor that will make Teni rule the Nigerian entertainment scene in 2020 is her devout fan base. No matter how talented you are as an artiste if you don’t have a huge fan base you are a failure. Success in the music industry can be attained through the strength of fans. The recent success of Teni’s London O2 Arena concert is an indication of the devotion her fan base has for her music. It is one thing to have devout fans, it is another thing to be able to engage them. Teni does this effortlessly. She feels the pulse of her fans and creates content that appeals to them. One of the reasons why her song, ‘Billionaire’ resonates with Nigerians is because it captures their aspirations. The song is an aspirational anthem for anyone who dreams of succeeding.

In an industry where talent is sometimes underrated over charm, glamour and charisma, Teni’s musical dexterity is not in doubt. Her Instagram page is replete with short melodious videos where the award-winning singer can be seen freestyling to a music progression. Little wonder she calls herself ‘the one take god’.

Yes the industry prefers its female entertainers skinny, flesh-baring with sex appeal to burn, but Teni is a total departure from this template. Rather she wears her baggy pants and allows her personality and talent to shine through. She would definitely be here for long.
