BREAKING: Novak Djokovic appoints greatest rival, Andy Murray as his coach

Novak Djokovic has announced appointing his “greatest rival”, Andy Murray as his coach ahead of the Australian Open.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Djokovic made the announcement in a video posted on his official X account on Saturday.

“I am excited to have one of my greatest rivals on the same side of the net, as my coach.

“We had some of the most epic battles in our sport. I thought our story was over, turns out it has one final chapter.

“It is time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner,” Djokovic said in the video.

TNG reports Murray retired in August after exiting the men’s doubles at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The three-time Grand Slam winner lost four Australian Open finals to Djokovic in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016.

However, he claimed victory over Djokovic at the US Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013.

Meanwhile, Murray has confirmed the development.

“I’m going to be joining Novak’s team in the off-season, helping him to prepare for the Australian Open.

“I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals,” Murray confirmed in a statement.

Zverev scrapes through Griekspoor to Shanghai Masters last 16

Second seed Alexander Zverev scraped through to the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday, winning two tiebreaks against the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor in an ill-tempered match that ended 7-6 (8/6), 2-6, 7-6 (7/5).

Novak Djokovic meanwhile powered through the third round, steamrolling Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour.

Zverev’s first set against 40th-ranked Griekspoor was overshadowed by the German’s prolonged, expletive-laden exchange with the umpire when he disagreed with a call.

“I cannot be bothered to go to China in October, for you to screw up this… I cannot, this is not possible,” Zverev ranted before tossing his racket across the court.

The world number three claimed the first set, but proceeded to fall apart in the second, with the Dutchman breaking him in the first, third and fifth game.

Zverev squandered an early lead in the third set tiebreak but an unforced error on Griekspoor’s part saw him crowned winner.

“Every time I play him it’s the most difficult match,” said Zverev, saying there had been “not much difference” between them.

VIRAL VIDEO: Nigerian tennis champion wandering streets draws attention of Anambra Gov, Sports Minister

Former Nigerian tennis player, Tanya Okpala has been captured wandering the streets of Awka, Anambra State, begging, in a video that has now gone viral.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Okpala, a half-caste athlete with a Belarusian mother and Anambra-native father, represented Nigeria in tennis competitions in the 1990s.

However, her present condition is nothing to write home about. But, she has drawn the attention of both the Governor of Anambra, Chukwuma Soludo and the Minister of Sports, John Enoh with the viral video.

Governor Soludo revealed that the former lawn tennis player would undergo rehabilitation.

In the video, Okpala, visibly distressed, shared her struggles, emphasising how she felt abandoned and neglected.

She expressed frustration at being taunted for her mixed heritage and mentioned people telling her to “go back to your country”.

Despite her challenges, she affirmed her identity as a black Igbo.

“The whole world hears my story and they laugh at me. I do not know why they laugh at me. They will say ‘Go back to your country’. I am just tired.

“I am okay. Even though I am a half-cast, I consider myself a black Igbo. I am going to the village tomorrow to look after my daughter until further notice.

“Even if it’s just water, but I would prefer something like a Sprite. As I am now, I just ate four puff-puff.

“I was a former lawn tennis champion in Nigeria. I do not know if you are familiar with Tanya Okpala and Jacqueline Okwueze during those days. I played tennis for Nigeria and Africa,” she was heard saying in the viral video.

Soludo, responding to the video, in a post on his X account on Sunday disclosed that Okpala is now in the custody of the state government.

He pledged support for her rehabilitation and reunion with her daughter and family.

“Tanya Okpala (former Tennis champion) is now in the custody of the Anambra State Government. She was with the Commissioner of Women Affairs when my wife spoke with her on the phone.

“My government will ensure her rehabilitation and fruitful reunion with her daughter and family,” Soludo wrote.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports revealed efforts that have been made so far to assist the distressed former tennis champion.

According to Enoh, the Nigeria Tennis Federation paid for Okpala’s first rehabilitation many years ago when her condition became public knowledge.

“But sadly the former tennis star relapsed after a short while,” the Minister disclosed in a post via X.

Enoh thanked Governor Soludo and his team for the swift intervention in the case of Okpala, saying “this is highly commendable”.

Describing the viral video of Okpala as disturbing, the Minister disclosed that his Ministry will take action to cater for the distressed former tennis star.

Enoh wrote: “The viral video of Okpala Tanya is disturbing, to say the least.

“I spoke with Tanya’s father who briefed me on her current condition and the genesis of her problem confirmed to me, that the Nigerian Tennis Federation paid for Tanya’s first rehabilitation many years ago when her condition became public knowledge but sadly the former tennis star relapsed after a short while.

“Okpala Tanya was once a tennis player of repute who has played in a lot of tennis tournaments. She represented Nigeria and the African continent and won laurels to her name. She was a tennis junior’s champion who played at the highest level and was ranked number one at the time.

“As a Ministry, our six-point agenda WAIFAR, has the W for activating and enabling a WELFARE system that caters to serving and retired athletes.

“As a ministry, we will take action in this regard as every athlete who has brought glory to our nation deserves appropriate welfare”.

Nadal to miss Madrid Open after recovery setback

Rafa Nadal will miss next week’s Madrid Open after a setback in his recovery from a hip injury sustained at the Australian Open in January.

Nadal, a 22-time major champion, announced this on Thursday, in a video published on his social media accounts.

He skipped tournaments at Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo as well as the on-going Barcelona Open, after suffering the injury that effectively ended his Melbourne Park title defence.

The world former world number also fell to a second-round defeat by Mackenzie McDonald.

“Initially it had to be a six to eight week recovery period and we are now on fourteen. The reality is that the situation is not what we would have expected.

“All medical indications have been followed, but somehow the evolution has not been what they initially told us and we find ourselves in a difficult situation.

“The weeks are passing and I had the desire of being able to play in tournaments that are the most important in my career such as Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros and for the moment I have missed Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

“I will not be able to be in Madrid unfortunately,’ he announced.

While the Spaniard still hopes to be fully fit for the Grand Slam starting in May, his statement is not optimistic.

“The injury still hasn’t healed and I can’t work out what I need to compete,” Nadal said.

“I was training, but a few days ago we decided to change course a bit, do another treatment and see if things improve to try to get to what comes next.

“I can’t give deadlines because if I knew I would tell you but I don’t know. This is how things are now.”

  • Part of me leaves with Federer, says emotional Nadal

Part of me leaves with Federer, says emotional Nadal

Rafa Nadal says an important part of him was also leaving the men’s Tour with the retirement of the Swiss tennis star Roger Federer.

Sitting courtside Nadal cried as his great rival, Federer, bid an emotional farewell to tennis at the Laver Cup on Friday.

Nadal, who has won a men’s record 22 Grand Slam singles titles, said it was a difficult night for him emotionally.

This was after the defeat to the American pair of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe marked the end of the 41-year-old Federer’s dazzling career.

“For me, has been huge honour to be a part of this amazing moment of the history of our sport, and at the same time a lot of years sharing a lot of things together,” the Spaniard said of Federer.

“When Roger leaves the tour, yeah, an important part of my life is leaving too because all the moments he has been next or in front me in important moments of my life.

“So has been emotional (to) see the family, see all the people. Yeah, difficult to describe. But, yeah, amazing moment.”

Federer, who won 20 major singles titles, played Nadal 40 times in one of the most compelling rivalries across any sport.

Despite the ferocity on court, they have remained friends off court. It was perhaps most apt that the Swiss chose to have his final dance with Nadal on his side of the net.

Loud cheers accompanied Federer and Nadal, or “Fedal” as they are jointly nicknamed, on to court. After entertaining the sellout crowd during the match, both were overcome by emotions.

“I think every year the personal relationship gets better and better, on a daily basis,” Nadal, 36, told reporters.

“I think in some way we understand at the end we have a lot of things similar. We approach the life probably similar.

“On court we have completely opposite styles, and that’s what probably makes our matches and our rivalry probably one of the biggest and most interesting.

“Very proud to be part of his career in some way. But even happier to finish our career like friends after everything we shared on court like rivals.”
