    JTF kill scores of terrorists, recovers weapons in Lake Chad Basin

    Fight against insurgency continues in  Lake Chad Basin, as Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force, (MNJTF) operating in region  killed many  terrorists and captured several pieces of equipment and high calibre weapons.

    In a statement  signed by the MNJTF’s spokesman, Lt. Col. Kamarudeen Adegoke at the weekend,said the latest successes were recorded under the renewed onslaught on the terrorists code-named “Operation Harbin Kunama” (Scorpion sting).

    The statement reads:
    “The ongoing operation by troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) nicknamed Operation HARBIN ZUMA has further diminished the capacity of BH/ISWAP terrorists to carry out their activities in the Lake Chad Basin region.

    “The offensive posture and doggedness of troops of the MNJTF has continued to yield remarkable results.

    “Following  attack by BH/ISWAP terrorists on troops position in the general area of Arege which was effectively repelled, an exploitation was conducted by troops of the Force on 11 May 2023 in the general area”.

    According to the statement, several items were recovered including one Dushka gun, Dushka Turrell and a burnt Gun truck while several terrorists were neutralized during the encounter.

    “Similarly, troops of MNJTF conducted a clearance operation in the general area of Ferondiya and successfully subdued BH/ISWAP terrorists attacks with superior fire power.

    “The resilient troops cleared suspected terrorists hideouts and recovered equipment which includes 2 Gun trucks, 2 Anti – Aircrafts guns, one RPG tube, 2 AK 47 rifles, one RPG bomb and 3 Toyota Buffalo Gun truck tyres. Others are quantities 387 rounds of 12.7mm, 440 rounds of 7.62mm x 54mm and 364 rounds of 7.62mm x 50 mm ammunitions”.

    Chibuisi, also expressed his appreciation to the Air Components from the Troops Contributing Countries for the vital roles they played in the operations which According he said contributed to the numerous successes recorded by ground troops.

    VP Osinbajo in Kaduna, to visit victims of Abuja-Kaduna train attack

    Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, was received at Kaduna Airport by Governor Nasir El-Rufai, as he is to visit victims of Abuja-Kaduna train attack in Kaduna.

     

    It was gathered that the victims of the attacks are at 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital and Saint Gerald’s Catholic hospital in the Kaduna state capital.

     

    His spokesman, Laolu Akande, said Osinbajo, who was already on his way to Lagos for the 13th colloquium in commemoration of the 70th birthday of All Progressives Congress stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made a detour to Kaduna on Tuesday afternoon after receiving the disturbing report of terrorists attack.

     

    Akande tweeted: “On his way to Lagos for the 13th Tinubu Colloquium marking former Lagos State Gov’s 70th birthday, VP had to detour to Kaduna this afternoon on receiving news of the extent of human & material losses occasioned by yesterday’s dastardly attack on the Abuja-Kaduna railway route.”

    President Buhari meets with security chiefs over Abuja-Kaduna train attack

    Following Monday night’s terrorist attacks on Abuja-Kaduna bound train by bandits, President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, met behind closed door with security chiefs.

     

    The Abuja-Kaduna bound train was conveying about 970 passengers from Abuja to Kaduna at about 7.45 p.m. on the fateful day.

     

    The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Faruk Yahaya, had on Tuesday visited the scene of the attack, where he ordered troops to intensify search and rescue operations as well as hunt down the terrorists.

     

    Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, also visited hospitals in Kaduna on Tuesday where injured victims are being treated.

     

    Those at the meeting with the President include all service chiefs, Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba and Director-General of the State Security Services, Yusuf Bichi.

     

    The Kaduna-bound train, which left Abuja 6 p.m, on Monday, was attacked by suspected terrorists around 7.45 p.m., with just 15 minutes’ drive before arriving Kaduna.

     

    Kaduna State Commissioner for Home Affairs and Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan, on Tuesday, said the train had been secured by military personnel, and that government had evacuated passengers on board.

     

    He said staff of Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and Nigeria Red Cross, Kaduna chapter, conducted the evacuation.

    Vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019, Peter Obi, has said challenges of insecurity is too much of a burden on Nigerians “already battling with hardship and poverty”.

     

    Obi, on Tuesday tweeted: “The terror attacks on Kaduna Airport and on Abuja-Kaduna bound train, with several persons reportedly abducted is depressing and disheartening and underscores the worsening level of insecurity across the country.

     

    “The challenges of insecurity is too much of a burden on Nigerians already battling with hardship and poverty. Sadly, the worsening level of insecurity only further aggravates the negative performance of Nigeria’s economy.”

    While condoling with the families of the bereaved, Obi sympathised with the traumatised passengers.

     

    He urged security agencies in the country to remain resolute in the fight against terrorism in the country.

     

    “The terror attacks in Kaduna and different parts of the country, have become very worrisome and should serve as wake up call to the government to beef up the country’s security and be more proactive in handling security issues,” Obi asserted.

    NMA urges security agencies to urgently reorganize security architecture in Nigeria

    President of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, and the Medical and Dental Practitioners, on Tuesday, called on security agencies to urgently reorganize the security architecture in the country, with a focus on intelligence gathering.

     

    Reacting to the death of a medical doctor, Dr Chinelo Megafu Nwando, following the train attack in Kaduna on Monday, they decried the worsening insecurity in the country, noting that it has made Nigerians as a whole vulnerable to violent attacks by hoodlums, bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists.

     

    According to a statement by Dr Aniekeme Uwah, NMA’s National Publicity Secretary, the association’s president, Prof Innocent Ujah, urged the Federal Government to provide modern gadgets and ammunitions for security agents to help tackle insecurity.

     

    The statement read: “All Medical and Dental Practitioners under the auspices of NMA are deeply saddened by the tragic, horrific and preventable death of one of our members, Dr Chinelo Megafu Nwando who is reported to have lost her life from injuries sustained from gunshots when the train she travelled in from Abuja to Kaduna was attacked by suspected bandits.

     

    “As an Association, we vehemently decry the worsening insecurity in the country which has made all of us and Nigerians as a whole vulnerable to violent attacks by hoodlums, bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists who are currently having a field day causing us deep sorrows and severe pains.

     

    “The untimely death of the young, promising Dr Chinelo who served at the Kaduna State Dental Centre and worked with St Gerrard’s Hospital, Kakuri, while striving to earn an honest living is one other death too many. The Association notes that needless bloodletting and senseless loss of lives is fast becoming a recurrent decimal in our country, thus worsening the alarming effects of brain drain, which in many instances have been attributable to the worsening security situation in the country.

     

    “The Association hereby calls on the security agencies to urgently reorganize the security architecture in the country with a focus on intelligence gathering to avoid these carnages across the country.

    “The Association also recommends that the Federal Government gives strong consideration to the establishment of state police to further complement the efforts of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

     

    “The recruitment of more security personnel and the provision of modern security gadgets and ammunition for them can’t be overemphasized.

     

    “Lastly, the Association prays God to grant the families of Dr Chinelo and all other victims of the very unfortunate incidence, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

     

    “We also pray for the speedy recovery of all those who sustained various forms of injuries from gunshots and while trying to escape the attack.”

     

    Nwando had died of gunshots injuries sustained when bandits attacked the Kaduna-Abuja train.

    The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has said its Base in Kaduna was never attacked by terrorists, contrary to the social media reports.

    In a statement, the Director Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said the speculation was the handiwork of merchants of fake news.

    He said occupants of the Base are going about their normal businesses.

    According to the statement, “merchants of fake news are at it again. This time around, their focus is on the premier Nigerian Air Force Base at Kaduna, which they claimed came under terrorist attack in the early hours of today, 26 June 2021.

    “Members of the public should please disregard the news as it is entirely false. There was nothing of such as the inhabitants of the entire Base are going about their normal activities and duties without any threat whatsoever.”
