Hackers steal personal details of 120,000 customers, Bank of Thailand says

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) has confirmed that hackers have stolen
information of more than 120,000 customers in a massive data breach into two major commercial banks.

Cybersecurity operators at BOT has vowed to step up security measures and oversight after Kasikornbank
and Krung Thai Bank reported cyber attacks during the Buddhist Lent holiday.

However, executives of both banks said no suspicious transactions took place.

Krung Thai Bank President Payong Srivanich said hackers used “advanced hacking techniques” to obtain
personal data from 20,000 customers who had applied for credit online.

According to the bank’s website, customers applying for loans or lines of credit need to provide a
copy of their ID card and census registration, including income and bank statements.

Payong said the bank was able to immediately stop the hacking after the bank’s IT Division reported
    suspicious activities of stealing data.

“Krung Thai Bank quickly had cybersecurity expert to stop the breach and therefore no damages have been
reported so far,” said Payong, “however customers who were affected were quickly notified.”

Pipit Aneaknithi, president of Kasikornbank, said hackers obtained data from about 3,000 corporate
customers who use an online bank guarantee service.

Pipit said he believes the hackers were local bred and had the cybersecurity expert quickly block access
    into the bank’s internal data.

“The data that might have been leaked was public information of the customers including company’s name
and contact details,” said Pipit, “there have been no reports of suspicious transactions from the hack.”

Pipit said he promises compensation to those affected.

Thai Bankers Association President Predee Daochai said with the advanced technology in the Internet of
Things, it is necessary to find more advanced levels in cybersecurity in the face of a rising global
    threat of cyber intrusion

  • Thai Boys: Again, collective human spirit triumphs – Owei Lakemfa

    By Owei Lakemfa.

A dozen boys, members of a youth football club with the intimidating name, The Wild Boars, ventured into the six-mile Tham Luang Cave. The cave is in the 1,275-kilometre long Doi Non Mountain Range in North Thailand.

The boys are aged 11-16 with Wiboonrungrueng Chanin, being the youngest. With them was their 25-year old coach, Ekaphol Chantawong, an orphan who was taking care of his grandmother. That was the beginning of a nightmare as they were not heard of again. The date was June 23.

A frantic search commenced as parents reported their children missing. It was a race against time that would make the difference between life or death. The cave was flooded and heavy rains were pounding the earth. Within days, the rest of humanity had joined the search by sending experts in various fields, through prayers or expressing concern. Experts from at least half a dozen countries including Britain, China, Australia, America, Denmark and Thailand were among the multinational 100 rescuers, that went into the cave. A thousand Thai soldiers were mobilized as well as 10, 000 support staff.

Humanity had faced a similar situation in 2010 when 33 Chilean miners were stuck for 69 days, 2,300 feet below the ground. That had resulted in collective human triumph. But this seemed worse given the fact that these were children who could easily quarrel among themselves and could become disobedient to the only adult amongst them. Also, unlike the miners who knew the hazards of their profession and could have been psychologically attuned, these were mere boys. Also, unlike the Chilean case, the Thai situation was a cave which could harbor dangerous animals and reptiles which an unarmed team of boys, might not be able to overcome. Worse was the possibility of drowning, and of course, starvation.

On July 2, nine days after they went missing, the team was located three kilometres from the cave entrance. They were found on a ledge surrounded by water. Two miles of narrow, flooded passage ways separated them from freedom. It was a miracle!

Understandably, the boys were frightened and malnourished. They sent massages to their parents. Particularly touching was Coach Chantawong who sent a letter to the parents blaming himself for the trauma. But doubtlessly, his leadership qualities and influence on the boys had kept up team spirit and hope. The former monk who faced his own fears of death, had calmed down the boys, suggested meditation, advised them not to move their bodies much, urged them to stay conscious and not allow their minds wonder. To his letter, the parents had responded “Please don’t blame yourself”

But more miracle was demanded as the team could not swim and the waters that had formed an island around them and filled their escape route, was not about to part like the Biblical Red Sea. Billionaire inventor, Elon Musk came up with the idea of his team quickly building a kid-sized submarine made up of rocket parts that could move the children through the waters to safety. The Thai authorities declined the offer. Rather, they went for the option of draining the waters as much as possible, and when reasonable levels are attained, to get the boys who were being trained to swim, to get out in diving suits.

This itself was not without great risk and the rains were not about to cease to allow the draining go smoothly. Then, there were worries about the lowering levels of oxygen in the cave. This became more worrisome when rescuer, Saman Kunan, a retired Thai Navy SEAL who had gone into the cave to place oxygen canisters along the route, himself ran out of oxygen and died. Nevertheless, the rescue went on apace.

With lower water levels attained and forecast of heavy rains coming, the decision was taken to move out the first set of four boys on Sunday, July 8. Each boy, equipped with scuba diving kits, was tethered to a rescuer in front who also carried his air tank, and a second rescuer behind him. With that, they emerged safely and were taken to hospital. Next day, another four were rescued in similar fashion. The rescuers took some rest, re-equipped, and on Tuesday, July 10, the last four boys, their coach and the entire rescue team emerged from the cave to a worldwide celebration. It was hours to the explosive semi-final match at the Russia 2018 World Cup, and it was going to seem a moral dilemma that large sections of the world would be cheering their favourite teams while the life of the Thai boys remained endangered. When France defeated the Belgians 1-0, the squad leader, wisely dedicated the victory to the Thai boys and their coach. FIFA which had invited the boys and their coach to the Sunday finals of the World Cup, regretted they will be unable to be present due to their hospitalization. But the team is likely to honour the invitation of Manchester United which invited them to Old Trafford.

It was a jubilant humanity. When the final rescue came, British Prime Minister, Theresa May was facing political pressures following the resignations of Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, Brexit Secretary, David Davis and two Tory Vice Chair Persons, Maria Caufield and Ben Bradley. But she put aside her worries including a possible vote of no confidence, to send a message saying: “ The world was watching and will be saluting the bravery of all those involved…”

Amidst the jubilation, the Spanish Royal family, remembered Saman Kunan who lost his life in the rescue operation. So did the Italian football team, AS Roma which sent out a message: “ Our thoughts are with the family of the ex-Navy SEAL diver, Saman Kunan who died after delivering the boys oxygen. A real hero”

In a post-rescue post, the Thai SEAL said “We are not sure if this is a miracle , a science or what” I say, it is combination of all.

It is instructive that in a world dominated by strong men and women who assume that call the shots, those who sent humanity into a frenzy dance of joy and who performed the super human feat of snatching the Thai boys and their coach from the jaws of death, are ordinary people. It is their commitment and sacrifice, the resilience of the boys and their coach, and a united humanity, that made the seemingly impossible, possible. What we need are not the strong, powerful and rich, but those who exude love for human life and are committed to remaking the world.

  • Thailand blames Nigeria for collapse of its rice mills

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh says Thailand has accused Nigeria of being responsible for the collapse of its seven rice mills following the drastic fall in rice importation from the country.

The minister made this known at a meeting of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) and leadership of the Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers of Nigeria (FEPSAN) held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday.

The meeting was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ogbeh said Thailand’s Ambassador to Nigeria made the “accusation’’ when he visited him in February.

According to the minister, the ambassador lamented that the collapse of the rice mills has increased the unemployment rate in his country from 1.2 per cent to 4 per cent.

Just like two weeks ago, the Ambassador of Thailand came to my office and said to me that we have really dealt with them.

But I asked what did we do wrong and he said unemployment in Thailand was one of the lowest in the world, 1.2 per cent, it has gone up to four per cent because seven giant rice mills have shut down because Nigeria’s import has fallen by 95 per cent on rice alone.

So, Mr President we thank you for the support and we thank all the agencies and those of you in the private sector for your resilience,’’ he said.

The minister, however, alerted the nation on what he described as alarming smuggling of fake fertilizer and rice along the western borders of the country.

He, therefore, called on the Federal Government to take drastic measures to check the trend as all previous diplomatic measures had failed to address the menace.

But one last request Mr President, we have to take one strong measure against our neighbour to the West. The smuggling is really compromising our capacity on our result.

Too much rice, too much fake fertilizer is still coming across the borders into this country in spite of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) we have with them they are not listening.

Maybe if the Federal Government take one tough action, they will come and renegotiate the terms because good neighbourliness means reciprocity.

We can’t be allowing them to survive at our own expense and I believe that we will do something about it,’’ he said.

Ogbeh appealed to FEPSAN to adjust their blending formula using little more micro nutrients for some crops like cocoa, cashew, plantain, banana and others that would soon be revived by his ministry.

The minister noted that the agricultural sector had created millions of jobs for Nigerians in the last two years.

He said: “People may say what they like about jobs. Recently I heard that we lost four million jobs. Nobody has calculated the millions and millions of jobs created on the farms.

So, this programme as it grows can only make us stronger.

As soon as more dams and lakes are put in place, you begin to sell fertilizer all year round and not wait for the rainy season alone.’’

  • Sad! Jealous man stabs wife to death for refusing him

Police in Chachoengsao, Thailand on Thursday, arrested a 38 year old man who murdered his estranged wife after she refused to get back together with him.

The suspect, Norasingh Buakhiaw was detained by neighbors at a Sukprayoon Road condo after he committed the crime.

His wife, 40 year old Arom Chamsawat, a local department store clothes seller was found on the seventh floor of the condo. She had been stabbed in the abdomen and neck and was lying in a pool of blood.

Two fruit paring knives were found at the scene – one bloodstained, another with the blade broken off.

Neighbor Phichet Sinchai said that the victim worked with his wife and had asked to come to their room for shelter as her estranged husband was on his way over.

At that moment Norasingh arrived and when she refused to face him he kicked in the door of the neighbor’s apartment and attacked her with two knives he had bought earlier.

He then fled the scene but was held by neighbors called by Pichet.

The suspect told police that he had split up with his wife who he had been with for three years. He had tried repeatedly to get back together with her after she moved out to the condo. He followed her there, to her work and made phone calls, all to no avail.

Then he was told by the victim that she had a new man. In a rage he bought two knives and drove over on his Honda Wave to where she was living.

Police found rope and electrical cord by the bike that they believe was to be used in the murder.
Norasingh was been detained Thursday by Pol Lieutenant Jatusoke Petchkhong investigating the murder.

Video: Girl asks taxi driver to livestream her committing suicide

A distressing footage showing an 18-year-old girl committing suicide has gone viral after it was livestreamed by her taxi driver.

The teenager, whose name is given as Ms. Nittaya Sawatdiwan, took a taxi to the Rama 8 bridge then asked her taxi driver to stop and help livestream the suicide. The taxi driver, Pattharadanai Noomarinart obliged and filmed the young woman as she climbed the railing of the bridge and jumped off it, into the Chao Phraya river in Thailand.

After the video went viral, many viewers criticized the driver for not doing anything to stop her from suicide.

Pattharadanai Noomarinart told police that the girl was crying, drinking and was very upset while complaining about her boyfriend before telling him to take her to the bridge. He further disclosed that the girl paid him extra money to stay with her and shoot the clip. He said he did not stop the girl from jumping into the river because he did not know she would kill herself.

He was not charged after being questioned by the police.

  • Fake social media ‘likes’: Police arrest operators of huge Click Farm

Three Chinese workers have been arrested at a rented Thailand house for operating a huge click farm and working without a permit.

Motherboard reports the gigantic click farm in Thailand is latest to be caught.

    https://twitter.com/lmatsakis/status/874352947752189952

The click farm had over 500 cell phones and 350,000 SIM cards. The setup also included nine computers and 21 SIM card readers.

According to the Bangkok Post, a Chinese company gave the men 150,000 baht ($4,403) along with the phones to pull off the operation for a month.

The men told the police they were operating to boost engagement for Chinese products sold in Thailand because of the low mobile phone fees.

They were generating “fake” page views, likes, and shares through the social media app WeChat.

    Click farms are very adaptable.

Companies can use them for everything — from acquiring LinkedIn connections to huge Facebook likes to massive Twitter followers, and to generate web traffic. And they make millions doing so.

According to Mashable, the men are probably going to be deported back to China, rather than facing any time behind bars.

This is not the first click farm to be busted. Just last month, a massive click farm with over 10,000 phones was discovered in China. And in today’s online-driven world, it almost certainly won’t be the last.

Just remember where the online popularity might be coming from next time you’re checking out companies and products online.
