Thiago Silva needs oxygen mask to perform at Chelsea – Burley

Chelsea look like being an adventurous outfit again in 2020-21, with Craig Burley claiming that “Thiago Silva is going to need an oxygen mask” after joining a side loaded with attacking talent.

The Blues favoured an attacking approach during Frank Lampard’s first campaign at the helm.

As a goal-scoring midfielder in his playing days, the Stamford Bridge legend is eager to see his team on the front foot.

Brazil international Silva, whose vast experience looks like being put to good use, could have plenty to do during his debut season in England, with the former Paris Saint-Germain star being asked to provide a sense of calm amid the chaos.

“Thiago Silva is going to need an oxygen mask because there is only N’Golo Kante in there who has got any defensive qualities,” Burley told ESPN FC when drawing up a potential Blues XI.

“That’s going to be the difficulty for Lampard, striking the balance.

Chelsea have completed the signing of former PSG captain Thiago Silva.

Brazil centre-back Thiago Silva has signed for Chelsea on a one-year deal, with the option of another.

The 35-year-old has joined the Blues on a free transfer having left Paris St-Germain after their Champions League final defeat on 23 August.

He will bolster the Blues’ defence, which conceded the most goals (54) in the Premier League top 10 in 2019-20.

“I am so happy to be joining Chelsea. I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad,” Thiago Silva said.

“I’m here to challenge for honours and I look forward to playing at Stamford Bridge very soon.”

Thiago Silva, who has made 88 international appearances, played more than 200 games for PSG during his eight years in the French capital, winning seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles.

He is manager Frank Lampard’s fourth summer signing, following England left-back Ben Chilwell from Leicester and forwards Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

Silva will do a great job for Chelsea – Rivaldo

Former Brazil international Rivaldo has expressed his belief that Thiago Silva will do a “great job” for Chelsea, while predicting that the ex-Paris Saint-Germain defender will become a “commanding voice” in Frank Lampard’s squad.

Silva dropped into the free agency pool after lining up for PSG in the Champions League final on Sunday.

Chelsea are believed to leading the race for Silva’s signature, with the former PSG centre-back reportedly set to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge later this week.

World Cup winner, Rivaldo told Betfair: “At 35, Thiago Silva will sign for two seasons with Chelsea and I’m confident that he will do a great job there, as he is a great centre back with excellent positioning and vast experience of world football.

“I think he still comes with plenty to offer. I’d back him to produce a good football in the Premier League and should be a commanding voice in Frank Lampard’s otherwise young squad.

“Nowadays, many players extend their careers until their late-thirties and Silva is a good example of that, as I was in my time.

‘If you keep yourself in good physical condition you can easily play at the highest level until 36, 37 years old.”

Chelsea are close to sealing a free transfer for Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Silva, according to Sky Sports.

The Brazilian played his final match for PSG in Sunday’s Champions League final defeat to Bayern Munich.

Signed from AC Milan in 2012, the 35-year-old Brazilian has been a mainstay of the Parc des Princes side for the duration of his stay in France and has won the affection of the fans.

“It was my last game in Paris,” he told RMC Sport. “I am sad. I apologise to the fans. I thank all the supporters for their love. I’ll come back, with another role, in this club I loved. I want to play for another 3-4 years and play in the World Cup in Qatar.”

  • Arteta calls Thiago Silva directly about Arsenal move

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has spoken directly with departing PSG captain Thiago Silva about a move to London.

It’s been confirmed by PSG that Thiago Silva will leave the club at the end of the season – he is currently finalising a short-term deal to cover the French Cup final and remainder of the Champions League.

Thiago Silva is a target for Everton, where his former PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti is keen. However, Arteta has jumped into the battle – thanks to David Luiz.

Luiz is urging Arteta to move for his Brazil teammate.

And Le 10 Sport says Luiz passed on Thiago Silva’s number to Arteta, who has since called the veteran defender to discuss a potential move to Arsenal.
