Barca legend: Why Ter Stegen better than Thibaut Courtois

Barcelona legend Andoni Zubizarreta is adamant Marc-Andre ter Stegen is a better goalkeeper than Real Madrid No1 Thibaut Courtois.

Former Barca No1 Zubi signed Ter Stegen when sporting director with the Blaugrana.

He said, “There weren’t many goalkeepers in the world who played like this, now there are more.

“From the first moment we worked on the future and to detect talent. We saw that there was a young boy in Germany who played how we wanted and we launched ourselves for his signing.

“I have always said that Courtois would be one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but that he was a goalkeeper with a profile that Barça needed something else.

“We were clear that we wanted a goalkeeper similar to (Victor) Valdés.”

  • I wasn’t happy Courtois was Chelsea first-choice – Cech

    I wasn’t happy Courtois was Chelsea first-choice – Cech

Former Chelsea Petr Cech admits he was “not happy at all” when the decision was taken to drop him behind Thibaut Courtois in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

The Czech goalkeeper had been the most reliable of last lines of defence for the Blues for 10 years prior to being asked to fill back-up duties.

Four Premier League titles and a Champions League crown had been collected in that time, with well over 450 appearances taken in.

“I was not happy at all,” Cech, who now fills an advisor role at Chelsea, told the Blues’ official website when reflecting on the end of his playing spell at the club.

“I could see in pre-season how hard I was working. There was nothing obvious suggesting I wouldn’t be ready to keep my spot.

“But in a football team you can only have one goalkeeper playing every week, and unfortunately that was the way it went.

  • Thibaut Courtois out of Belgium friendly, returns to Chelsea

Thibaut Courtois has returned to Chelsea early from international duty with Belgium, but coach Roberto Martinez confirmed Courtois should be fit for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham.

Antonio Conte confirmed Courtois was suffering from a “muscular problem” ahead of last week’s FA Cup quarter-final win against Leicester City.

The 25-year-old decided to join up with Martinez’s Belgium squad despite the issue and hoped to recover in time for Tuesday’s international friendly against Saudi Arabia, however, medical staff with the Belgium national side decided Courtois had not recovered in time for the match and confirmed the goalkeeper will return to Chelsea continue his rehabilitation.

“Thibaut Courtois, from a coaching perspective, will not be fit for Tuesday but could be okay to play at the weekend against Tottenham for his club. For Tuesday it is too early and a risk.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for Simon [Mignolet] to have back-to-back international fixtures.

“We are not going to take any chances with anyone. The medical team felt he would not be 100 per cent for Tuesday.”

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will start for Belgium against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
