Observatory cameras on Third Mainland Bridge ready by June – Umahi

The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, said on Monday that solar cameras with an observation room would be installed on the Third Mainland Bridge by June.

Umahi said this after a routine inspection of the under deck at Iddo, Carter and the Third Mainland bridges in Lagos.

He said that similar improvement was planned for Carter Bridge, subject to budget approval.

The minister said that the Federal Government had taken proactive measures to address the condition of the piles supporting the Third Mainland Bridge.

He said that erosion and illegal mining had damaged the piles, and a consultant would be contacted on the repairs.

He said, “We’re working on a number of bridges inherited; we inherited construction work on Eko bridge, Marina bridge, Liverpool bridge, all done by Build Well.

“Even the Independence Bridge and Iganmu bridge; on top of the bridges, we have almost finished the deck job, though we are extending the deck job, and then we are also constructing CCTV and observation room.

“Then, below the deck, we are working on the piles, and then, we now see the pier caps.

“These are the works that are going on under the deck. We still have one major work that we’re going to be looking at.

“We’ll be doing a meeting with Julius Berger to look at one of the most serious and challenging jobs, and that is the work that is right below the pier caps, that’s the piles and then the decks bed.”

Umahi advised the contractors to accelerate construction work on the bridges before the lagoon tide rises in June.

FG to resume resurfacing of Third Mainland Bridge – Works Controller

The Federal Government says resurfacing work on the Third Mainland Bridge will soon commence from Adeniji inward Falomo, to restore the integrity and aesthetics of the bridges.

The Federal Controller of Works in the State, Mrs Olukorede Keisha, made this known at a news briefing on Thursday in Lagos.

According to her, the project – an extension of the original plan – will continue where it left off on the Third Mainland Bridge.

She said that the exact dates for the renewed construction would be announced soon.

She said, “President Bola Tinubu has graciously asked us to continue the resurfacing from where we stopped on the Third Mainland bridge. So we’re continuing any moment from now.

“So any moment from now we’ are going to see the contractor back in site extending beyond Adeniji inward Falomo. We’re going to do the same thing just like we did on the Third Mainland Bridge.

“We know that motorists are major stakeholders. So we do not want to do this without getting across to them that’s why we’re doing this press conference so that it will not come as a surprise to us.”

Keisha said that the contractor had been told to mobilise immediately and currently in the preparation stage.

She said that the work would involve laying new asphalt, repainting lane markings, adding missing lines, and installing solar lights.

She said that the project aimed to improve not only the bridge’s structural integrity but also its overall appearance.

Keisha said that a traffic management plan was being developed to minimise disruption for motorists.

  • Three vehicles collide on Third Mainland Bridge

Three vehicles collide on Third Mainland Bridge

The Lagos Sector  of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has again called for safe driving, especially on the newly reopened Third Mainland Bridge, after an accident occurred on it on Thursday.

A collision involving three vehicles occurred on the bridge on Thursday, the day it was fully reopened to traffic after months of partial closure.

The FRSC described the incident, which involved three vehicles inward Iyana Oworo axis of the bridge, as an avoidable crash, and blamed it on negligence.

The Sector Commander, Mr Babatunde Farinloye, told NAN on Friday in Lagos that the people that were installing an information device did not properly place the caution sign to alert others on the work they were doing.

“The vehicles coming were not concentrating, and this is connected with the attitude of drivers.

”Driving needs 100 per cent concentration, as with lack of concentration, there is bound to be crash.

“There was no injury, it was just minor damage of vehicle.

“The first one hit the vehicle that was parked on the speed lane and the second one rammed into that one,” he said.

The sector commander advised motorists to drive cautiously, reiterating the need to comply with the 80km per hour speed limit on the bridge.

“FRSC Lagos admonishes motorists not to exceed speed limit because speed indeed thrills but kills.

“Motorists are to obey traffic regulations and rules in order to ensure their safety and that of other road users,” he said.

He stressed the need for motorist and the general public to use the FRSC Emergency toll free number 122 and National Emergency toll free number 121, in case of crash or any other occurrences that pose as threat to their safety and security.

He reemphasised FRSC’s commitment to ensuring a safe motoring environment for all and prompt service delivery in case of any emergency.

“Speeding, aggressive, and distractive driving, as well as driving under influence, remain critical issues that must be collectively addressed,” he said.

He thanked the Federal Government and the  Minister of Works, Mr Dave Umahi, for the rehabilitation work on the bridge, saying it would guarantee quality travel time.

  • Revamped Third Mainland Bridge fully reopened with speed cameras

Revamped Third Mainland Bridge fully reopened with speed cameras

The Federal Government has installed speed limit cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge, to encourage responsible driving, preserve the bridge and improve safety.

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Keisha, announced the unofficial re-opening of the bridge on Thursday, in Lagos.

She said that the speed limit was being done in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Recall the Federal Government had on January 9 commenced a comprehensive rehabilitation on the bridge due to several failed portions.

Keisha disclosed that the speed cameras would be displayed conspicuously at the median to capture motorists who would exceed the limit.

She explained that anyone caught speeding, would not face immediate penalties on the spot.

Keisha said, “Today we are fixing the speed limits. It is in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Corps and they are on the bridge now doing that.

“The speed limit has been designed to be 80km/per hour. So, if you speed past 80km in the next few weeks, your honourable Commissioner will have you to contend with.

“And at the renewal of your vehicle licence, you will be surcharged. So it’s no longer going to be business as usual.’’

Keisha, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, noted that the bridge, which was fully opened to the public, still had some additional work ongoing on it.

This remaining work, Keisha said, includes installing solar lights and CCTV cameras.

According to her, they are doing this while the bridge is open so as not to disrupt traffic flow in the future.

She said that the main deck repairs would be finished by May 2024, adding that there would be an official commissioning to mark the completion by President Bola Tinubu.

Additionally, Keisha said that work would be done underneath the bridge and underwater.

She assured the users that the work would not cause any traffic issues, noting that it was important to strengthen the overall bridge structure.

She also said that if drivers follow the speed limit and there was no misuse of the road (like overloading or accidents), the Third Mainland Bridge would not require major maintenance for the next two years.

Keisha appealed to motorists to report breakdowns, saying, “If you see something, say something, and if you see a car being repaired on the bridge, you should report it by calling me or the police.

“We are going to talk with the governor. If your vehicle breaks down, it is not to your own joy or delight. So, you should be assisted instead of being penalised.

“So, if people know that they will be assisted, I’m sure they will be encouraged to drive to a safe place or to park and quickly fix one or two things, but not do major repairs on the bridge.’’

In his remark, the Commissioner for Transportation, Lagos State, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, corroborated Keisha’s statements, urging people to comply.

“You will see speed limit signs as from today and the speed cameras will come on; the speed limit for Third Mainland Bridge is 80km per hour, so the speed cameras are there.

“So if you go beyond the speed limits, what it does is that it takes a picture of your car and your number plate; we have a database, and we have our ways of sending your bills to you.

“So I will advise that people comply,’’ he said.

LASTMA sends warning to motorists over renovated Third Mainland Bridge

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned motorists to maintain speed limit while driving on the long stretch of the newly-renovated Third Mainland Bridge.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, gave the warning in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, signed by Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, Mr Adebayo Taofiq.

According to Bakare-Oki, the comprehensively-repaired bridge is scintillating and fascinating to drive on without any impediment.

He said that this might be too tempting and risky not to observe the speed limit, thereby resulting in untoward consequences for motorists.

“The government has installed state-of-the-art facilities that will aid motorists in navigating the entire bridge to their various destinations within a reasonable travel time,” he said.

The general manager urged motorists to obey every traffic sign and other installed traffic-related electronic devices where necessary and keep to the approved speed limit.

“Motorists must be conscious of time and plan their journey ahead to avoid unnecessary speeding while using the bridge and any other link roads across the state,” Bakare-Oki said.

He assured the motoring public that the agency would deploy more men, patrol and recovery vehicles to ensure safety of motorists and timely rescue intervention on the bridge.

Bakare-Oki, however, cautioned owners and drivers of vehicles to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before plying the bridge as the agency would frown at any avoidable obstacle capable of hindering vehicular movements on the flyover.

The LASTMA boss addressed officers of the agency whose purview fell within the Third Mainland Bridge operational areas.

The Federal Government is set to reopen the bridge for traffic on April 4.
