Partey reveals two games he’s played at 100 per cent for Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey believes the North London club have only seen him at 100 per cent on two occasions since his arrival at Emirates.

Partey has suffered a string of injuries since he arrived which have limited him to just 16 appearances so far in all competitions and only 11 starts, and the 27-year-old admits that he has only felt at his very best twice since making the move from Spain six months ago.

When asked, ahead of Thursday’s Europa League last-16 first-leg tie against Olympiacos, whether Arsenal have seen him at 100 per cent yet, the Gunners midfielder said: “Yes, I had a few games.

“I think against [Manchester] United at their home and against Wolves [away] also I was able to show what I can do.

“Due to less games and less training I think I have to keep working, keep trying to get back to that level again.”

Arsenal new star named EPL best signing of the summer

Ex-Arsenal star, Paul Merson, has named Thomas Partey as the “number one” signing made by any Premier League club over the summer.

Partey joined the Gunners from Atlético Madrid after they triggered his £45 million release clause.

The Ghanaian impressed on his debut – a 2-1 Europa League win over Rapid Vienna and produced an excellent midfield display as they beat Manchester United in his second Premier League start.

While Merson refused to get carried away by the victory at Old Trafford, he heaped praise on Partey for his “massive” display.

“They beat a terribly, terribly poor Manchester United team on the day. They’ve done a job, we’ve seen them lose those games over the last five or six years.

“But I think Partey’s a massive, massive difference. I mean, what a signing.

“When you talk about signings in the summer, he’s got to be number one. I cannot believe, without being horrible here, that Arsenal got him,” Merson said on Sky Sports.

Arsenal signing Thomas Partey has revealed why he wants to be known as “Thomas”.

His No18 Gunners shirt will not be accompanied by the name ‘Partey’.

Speaking for the first time, he said: “I’ve seen that there are Parteys everywhere and even the photographer asked me why I don’t use Partey on my shirt.

“I said it’s because I started with Thomas and people are familiar with Thomas, so I need to go with Thomas.

“I’ve seen that everyone has been excited and everyone is willing to win something and all the trophies that come their way. I think that’s the goal and objective for everyone here and that’s my goal also.

“It’s something that is difficult and we all know that it’s difficult, but we’re working towards it and I think we are ready. We have to go all out and try to achieve all of that ourselves.

“I think it was a new challenge for me. I’ve always wanted to play in the top leagues and the Premier League is one of the top leagues, so I’m happy to be here.

“I think it’s a great challenge, I want to experience new challenges and also in a great family like Arsenal, I am ready to give it my all and try to help this great club come back to where they belong.”

2am call sparked Arsenal deadline move for Partey

Arsenal’s deadline day swoop for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey was sparked by a 2am call on Sunday morning.

Marca reports The Gunners were heavily linked with Partey all summer but went for broke in the very early hours of deadline day.

Partey knew Arsenal were interested in him, but went to bed on Sunday night fully expecting to be an Atletico Madrid player this season.

The Gunners, though, had other ideas, and decided this would be the right time to get the ball in motion and phoned the Ghanaian’s representatives at 2am, prompting ‘everything to change’.

Partey allegedly learned of Arsenal’s intentions on Monday morning, with Marcareporting that the midfielder and agent ‘could not have imagined’ that he had already played his final game for the La Liga club.

The midfielder is then said to have been ‘put on the spot’ and made to make a decision before Arsenal later triggered his £52.5million release clause.

All in all the Gunners splashed out £110m on Partey, agreeing to pay him £260,000-a-week for four years and handing him a £2.5m signing-on fee.

Partey’s agent also made 10 per cent commission from the deal.
