Osun NASS caucus condemns invasion of LG secretariats by thugs

The Osun caucus in the National Assembly has condemned the invasion of local government councils in the state by some suspected thugs.

According to reports, suspected thugs had, in the early hours of Monday, invaded all the 30 local government councils in the state.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Monday, the caucus Leader, Rep Bamidele Salam, called on President Bola Tinubu and people of good conscience to call the sponsors of the thugs to order.

Salam explained that the former council chairmen were sacked by the court on grounds that their election was a violation of constitutional provisions.

The lawmaker, while condemning the invasion of the council secretariat, said it was a recipe for anarchy.

“We use this medium to condemn the brazen effrontery of the sacked local government council officials to return to office, notwithstanding the yet-to-be-set-aside decision of the Court Appeal against their return,” he said.

Salam lamented that the people of Osun only woke up on Monday to the take-over of the council secretariats across the state by the sacked officials, describing the action as criminal

He claimed that the violent take-over of the local government councils had led to the death of some innocent persons.

The lawmaker called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the Inspector-General of Police to restore law and order in the state.

Analysis: Violence, voter suppression and apathy taint Nigeria’s governorship and state assembly elections

There were cases of violence and voter suppression reported across several states on Saturday March 18, as Nigeria held its Governorship and State House of Assembly elections nationwide.

States such as Benue, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Ogun and Lagos, experienced varying degrees of viciousness against voters, observers and journalists.

In Imo state for example, as much as 19 ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), were kidnapped in the early hours of Saturday and also the police immediately swung into action and ensured the release of the abductees, sensitive election materials, including BVAS machines were carted away.

Similarly, thugs stormed polling units in Yenagoa constituency II, ward 8 and Ekeremor constituency 1, ward 1, unit 15 of Bayelsa state and carted away some election materials, while destroying others and disrupting the voting process.

An election observer in Ekiti state, Sunday Awosoro, reported harassment by suspected thugs at Irepodun/Ifelodun, in the Igede area of the state, while staff of Arise TV were reportedly brutalised in the Elegushi Palace area of Lagos State whilst covering the elections and their cameras and drone were seized.

A Vanguard Editor, Prince Osuagwu, was also harassed by thugs in the Satellite area of Lagos state, on the allegation that he was using a spy pen to record activities at a polling unit in the area, which turned out to be false.

Meanwhile, INEC has postponed Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections in 10 polling units in the Victoria Garden City (VGC) around the Lekki area of the state where elections did not hold.

The Lagos state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Segun Agbaje, said the ad hoc staff deployed to the VGC estate became hesitant to conduct the elections in the venue, alleging that they were held hostage by residents during the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The staff instead set up voting materials in front of the estate, but residents claimed they did not feel safe about the new venue as hoodlums could disrupt the process.

“After due consultation and further directive from the national headquarters that we should remobilise here tomorrow (Sunday) morning by 08:30am to conduct the elections, Agbaje said.

Thugs also attacked a journalist working for Premier Radio in Kano state, Ashiru Umar, at Gidan Galadima, Galadanci Primary School, Gwale local government area, thinking that he had captured them while snapping voters who show up their ballot papers to them after casting votes, allegedly in return for some gift items later.

Low voter turnout was also reported in many polling units, compared to the impressive turnout for the Presidential elections held two weeks ago.

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) also observed that in many voting centres, accreditation and voting commenced late.

“From the data gathered across 18 states at the time of analysis, CJID observed that elections started late in most states, that is, after 10:00 a.m. as against the 8.30 a.m. opening time,” the organisation said.

“From the data received, only 20 per cent of the polling units observed started election processes before 8:30 a.m…” The CJID deployed 56 observers across 31 states to observe the election day activities.

Voting has ended in most polling units across the country, while collation and counting of votes is underway.

The governorship and the state houses of assembly elections are taking place today across Nigeria.

Also holding today are the Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency election halted during the 25 February Presidential and National Assembly polls as a result of the omission of the Labour Party logo and that of the Enugu East Senatorial District which was shifted following the killing of Oyibo Chukwu, the party’s candidate in the district, on 22 February.

The state elections, the second phase of the 2023 General Elections, was initially scheduled for 11 March but deferred by one week following a Court of Appeal order granting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) permission to reconfigure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the exercise. This followed the 3 March ex-parte order of the court given to some political parties to inspect materials used for the presidential poll whose results they are challenging.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that last month’s elections held in 470 constituencies comprising 109 senatorial districts, 360 federal constituencies and one presidential.

Today’s governorship elections will hold in 28 out of the 36 states of the federation.

Elections will not be conducted in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo and Osun States where off-cycle polls are held at different times.

The electoral calendars of those states were altered due to judicial pronouncements. INEC has already scheduled the elections in Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo for November.

The exercise will not also hold in the FCT (Abuja) because it has neither a governor nor an assembly. The territory is administered by the federal government through a ministry and the National Assembly where it is represented by a senator and two members in the House of Representatives.

All 18 registered political parties are fielding over 400 governorship candidates in the 28 states in today’s contest. The breakdown shows that Abia, Akwa Ibom, Plateau and Taraba States have the highest number of candidates with 18 each followed closely by Delta, Enugu, Kano, Rivers and Sokoto with 17 candidates each. Cross River and Yobe have the least number of candidates with 11 each.

  • Elections underway in Nigeria’s South amidst report of violence in Bayelsa

Elections underway in Nigeria’s South amidst report of violence in Bayelsa

Nigeria is holding its Governorship and State House of Assembly elections in 28 states on Saturday March 18 and thugs have reportedly hijacked and burnt election materials for three wards in Ogbia Constituency 2 in Bayelsa State.

The elections come two weeks after the controversial Presidential and National Assembly polls held on February 25.

Eight hundred thirty-seven candidates are vying for governorship positions while 10,240 candidates are contesting state assembly seats across the states where the election will hold.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deployed to Ogbia Constituency have ran for their lives and are reportedly heading back to Yenagoa the Bayelsa state capital, as the hoodlums are on the rampage, and it appears there will be no election in area.

However, in other parts of the South-South geo-political zone, elections commenced early and peacefully, with officials in some polling units setting up as early as 7: 00 am and accreditation and voting commenced promptly around 8:00am in many polling units monitored.

It would be recalled that the governorship election earlier scheduled for March 11, was postponed by a week by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to allow it sufficient time to reconfigure the Bi-modial Voter Accreditation .

Governorship elections will not hold this time in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun and Ondo, as polls to the offices of governors of the states are held off-cycle and not part of the general election.

However, two National Assembly elections suspended by the Commission on February 25 will hold today in Edo and Enugu states, alongside the governorship and state assembly polls.

INEC said elections are not supplementary polls as reported by some media platforms.

The National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, explained that the Enugu East Senatorial District election was countermanded to allow the Labour Party conduct a fresh primary election to replace its deceased candidate in line with the provision of Section 34(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.

“The second is the Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency of Edo State following issues with the ballot paper for the election,” Okoye said.

He stressed that supplementary elections will take place on a date to be announced by the commission immediately after the governorship and state assembly elections.

FACTCHECK: Did thugs attack and inflict injuries on Olumide Oworu?

Popular actor and candidate of the Labour Party (LP) gunning for the Surulere LGA I constituency seat, Olumide Oworu said his campaign team was attacked by thugs who ambushed them at Iponri, Surulere on Thursday.

Oworu who is popularly known for his role as ‘Tari’ in the Africa Magic series ‘The Johnsons”, is fiercely contending for the seat with another actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot, of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a tweet posted on Thursday March 16, Oworu said they had attempted to campaign in the area before the deadline announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) when the attack happened.

“My team and I were attacked on Tuesday as we attempted to campaign at Iponri, Surulere. A member of my team was injured, but we are thankful the incident didn’t escalate past the level it was,” he said.

A member of the the team who sustained injuries during the attack on Thursday.

Although the actor did not speak about bodily harm inflicted on him, a photo of him with a bloodied face has gone viral on the platform, insinuating that the attackers were responsible for the injuries.

In the photo, Oworu who was wearing a bloodstained white shirt was seated in what looked like a medic van, as blood flowed down his injured head. His nose and mouth also appeared injured.

Our Findings: Our findings revealed that the photo which has drawn both condemnation and sympathy from the public was taken on set of one of the movies the actor featured in late last year.

Another photo of a bloodied Olumide taken on set of a movie was published on 3rd October 2022.

An analysis of the photo also showed that the photo was published on the actor’s Instagram page on 3rd October, 2022 and was therefore not as a result of the attack on his campaign team.

The actor, however, disclosed that the attack has been reported at the Iponri police station and he remains undeterred by the incident.

Verdict: While Oworu and his campaign team were attacked, the photo showing supposed injuries inflicted on the actor by thugs on Thursday is FALSE and has been deviously shared to mislead the public.
