Bloody Friday in Gombe as thugs attack Senator Goje’s convoy, five killed

It was a bloody Friday in Gombe State after some thugs attacked the convoy of a former governor of the state, Senator Danjuma Goje.

Five persons reportedly lost their lives in the attack.

Eyewitness said the attack occurred when Goje ran into an ambush by suspected political thugs on his way from the Airport after returning from Abuja.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Goje is the Senator representing Gombe Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly and a chieftain of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Governor was said to be in the State to attend a wedding Fatiha after months of absence from public appearance.

He was conspicuously absent from the wards, local government and state congresses recently held in the State.

TNG gathered that incumbent governor, Inuwa Yahaya have been at logger heads with Goje who happened to be his former boss upon assumption of office.

Goje was absent from all the party stakeholders and traditional rulers endorsement of Governor Yahaya for the second term.

Confirming the attack Goje’s aide, Lilian Nworie, described the event as unfortunate.

“He (Goje) left Abuja this morning to attend a wedding. So, this afternoon as they proceeded to the town around the International Conference centre the road was blocked. One of his glasses was smashed,” she said.

Asked if the Senator had returned back to Abuja, she added: “He returned back to the airport, he can’t return to Abuja because he must attend the wedding. They are currently moving slowly now into the town with security. The wedding is after Juma’at”

Meanwhile, the State Government, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Julius Ishaya Lepes, blamed Goje for the incident.

The statement reads: “The former Governor, in his characteristic manner, decided to mobilise thugs from various LGAs armed to their teeth under the pretext of accompanying him from the airport into the State capital for reasons best known to him.

“Recall that during the last Eid el-Kabir Sallah celebration, the same person sponsored some thugs that threw caution into the wind and went on a rampage, leading to loss of 2 lives. Also just last week at Deba in Yamaltu Deba LGA the same scenario played out at the instance of the Senator.

“It is sad that Goje has not left his old ways and is bent on bringing back his brainchild (Kalare) to unleash mayhem and bug the peaceful atmosphere of Gombe State.”

While sympathising with families of the five people killed and those who sustained injuries, the State Government commended security agencies for their timely intervention in bringing the ugly situation under control.

Fayose calls Makinde ‘deadly’ for allegedly sponsoring thugs to attack him

The widely reported reconciliations between former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose and Governor Seyi Makinde has been thrown into the dustbin as Fayose on Wednesday attacked Makinde, saying he looked quiet outside but deadly.

Fayose made the revelation in an interview on Channels The former governor was shown a video where some thugs were threatening to kill him at the just concluded PDP’s Southwest zonal congress in Osogbo, Osun State and was asked to comment what the development meant for the PDP.

Fayose said the people in the video were waiting for him to attend the congress and that they would kill him.

He identified the spokesman of the PDP thugs to be a transport union chairman from Oyo State, saying they were sponsored by Makinde to threaten him.

He said this was enough to show the world that if such characters were supporting Makinde, it showed the kind of people behind him.

“What this gentleman was saying at a time before they came to the venue, they said Fayose, we will kill you, we are waiting for you here, we are going to kill you.

“This is the chairman of the Road Transport Workers in Oyo State. These people came with governor Makinde’s convoy. Everybody knows, who is this man? Is he the road transport worker in Ekiti?

“This is enough to show the whole world, if Governor Makinde, a first time two-year-old governor, yet to be two-year-old governor is parading characters like these, it simply shows the kind of people behind him.

“This is shameful for our party, I take responsibility, in the 21st century, thuggery is shameful for our party. You remember I was in Ondo, these same people came to attack me and I told Governor Makinde, so I am glad the whole world is seeing this.

“Governor Makinde, he looks quiet but deadly. Parading these people to wait for me there, they are over a thousand and they were saying they would cut my neck if I dare come to the congress and that was why I made up my mind that I must attend that congress. Even if I die there, I die, so I attended the congress, by the time I got there, they fled.

“So, I don’t think that this is right for Nigeria, it is not right for our party and is condemnable. If anybody wants to do election and you parade 200 buses of thugs, it is sad.”

Thugs disrupt PDP North West Congress in Kaduna

The North-West Zonal Congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ended abruptly on Saturday after it was disrupted by thugs.

Scores of party faithful had stormed the International Trade Fair Complex in the Kaduna State capital for the exercise which was attended by some PDP chieftains.

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, and a former National Caretaker Chairman of the party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, were among those present while Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, was absent at the congress.

The congress was disrupted by thugs midway into the voting process by delegates from the seven states of the north-west region to elect their zonal chairman and other executive members.

During the violence that rocked the congress, ballot papers and other voting materials were destroyed – a situation that forced most of the party chieftains to hurriedly leave the venue for fear of being caught in the attack.

The Chairman of the Media Sub-Committee of the congress, Abdulrahman Usman said the fracas was caused by delegates from Kano State over who would emerge as the PDP chairman in the zone.

He explained that as soon as the exercise was disrupted, the congress was put on hold to avoid further escalation of the crisis.

Usman, however, said that the leaders of the party would meet to address all pending issues before fixing a new date for the zonal congress.

Sources said there were two top contenders for the position of the zonal chairman from Kano State, Senator Bello Gwarzo and Muhammad Yusuf.

Gwarzo is said to enjoy the support of a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali, who is the leader of a faction of the PDP in Kano.

On the other hand, Yusuf is said to be fronted by a former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who leads another faction of the party in the state.

Some of the delegates from both factions in Kano, Aminu Abdulsalam, Hamza Safiyanu, and Yusuf Bello, described the disruption of the congress as shameful and undemocratic.

The PDP zonal congress was held to elect new leaders that would pilot the affairs of the party in the zone for the next four years.

Insecurity: Nigeria will be safe when politicians stop using criminals for elections – Yahaya Bello

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, says Nigeria will be safer and more secure when politicians stop the use of thugs and criminals during elections.

Bello made this on Wednesday during a monitored programme on Channels Television.

“When politicians begin to stop the use of thugs, touts, or some group of criminal that is when we will begin to have safety and security,” Bello said.

The governor also stressed that he won the November 16, 2019 Governorship Poll without the use of ‘boys’ or thugs.

According to him, political thuggery and use of ‘boys’ during elections was the order of the day in Kogi before he came into power but he “refused to play that kind of dangerous politics.”

“When I came on board, I inherited a state that was largely divided along several lines. For you to aspire to be anything politically in Kogi State then, you must have what we call ‘boys’ or thugs or touts and then use it to intimidate people during political dispensations.

“Once the political exercise is over, the so-called boys or thugs or foot soldiers would be abandoned and left to themselves and by that, they breed into something else or a hydra-headed monster that you will not be able to curb at the end of the day. There are several histories, records, and intelligence to that effect across the country.

“But I refused to play that kind of dangerous or unnecessary politics when I came on board. My ascension to the office is known to everybody across the world. I chose my path immediately and decided to deal with criminals irrespective of political affiliations by simply utilising the laws passed by the Kogi State House of Assembly and the existing security architecture,” he said.

He boasted that Kogi State “run an open-door policy,” widely embraced by the residents.

Speaking further on how he was re-elected governor on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019, Bello said evidence abound to show that he won the election freely

“I won my election free and square. The police, the DSS, the military, and all law enforcement agencies have their facts. Don’t listen to the lies they peddle out there. When I see those things, I simply laugh and say how I wished they come to Kogi State to see for themselves.

“There was no time in my campaign that any of my supporters or followers goes into the destruction of billboards, signposts, or installations of the state government, before, during, and after the election. I can say this boldly.”
