#EndSARS: Army issues strong warnings to thugs, miscreants over attacks, disruption of protests

The Military has condemned the reported attacks on protesters demanding abolition of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and sweeping reforms in the Nigerian Police Force by “thugs and miscreants”.

It warned further attacks against “peace loving Nigerians” will not be condoned.

It threatened: “Thugs and miscreants are hereby warned to desist from engaging in violent activities against peaceful Nigerians henceforth, or face appropriate measures”.

According to the Coordinator Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche: “The Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies have observed with dismay some violence-related protests across the country; particularly the increasing number of attacks on peaceful protesters by thugs and miscreants”.

He added: “This unfolding event against peace loving Nigerians will not be condoned. Hence, thugs and miscreants are hereby warned to desist from engaging in violent activities against peaceful Nigerians henceforth, or face appropriate measures.

“Thus, the Military High Command duly encourages peaceful citizens to go about their normal activities without fear of intimidation or harassment as the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies are on ground for their safety.

“In clear terms, any attempt to undermine the democracy of our beloved nation under any cover will not be allowed. For emphasis, the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains subordinated to the civil authorities of the country with unflinching loyalty to the President Commander in Chief.

“Additionally, the Military High Command wishes to reassure law abiding citizens that it is highly committed to the sustenance of peace, security, and the defence of democracy in Nigeria. The Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies hereby commends all citizens particularly those who genuinely express their concerns in an organized, patriotic and civil manner”.

The High Command of the Armed Forces had denied referring to #EndSARS protesters as subversive elements.

It explained that rather the subversive elements referred to in a statement issued by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sagir Musa, were people who will want to derail the cause of the protest.

Enenche, who made the denial while fielding questions from Defence Correspondents at the weekly update on military operations across the Federation, explained: “I will say that the subversive elements are people who will want to derail the cause of the protest. And who are those people?

“You will agree with me that they are those who are out for destruction. Some people are even hauling stones even at the protesters, these are subversive elements.

“People are protesting peacefully, they are carrying placards and they are being answered and you are hauling stones at them. So i will want to state that these are the subversive elements that the army is referring to not the protesters”.

Mayhem @ Alausa: Lagos speaks on hiring thugs to disrupt #EndSARS protests

The Lagos State Government has denied sponsoring thugs to disrupt #EndSARS protests in the commercial city.

Commissioner for information and strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, in a statement, said the allegations trending in the social media are “obviously concocted by enemies of peace and orderliness to whip up sentiments against the government, which has been doing everything possible to resolve the crisis by identifying with our youths in their efforts towards police reforms.”

TheNewsGuru.om, TNG, reports that armed thugs stormed Alausa early Thursday morning to chase away protesters, some of whom slept overnight at the entrance to the Governor’s Office.

But Omotoso said the insinuation in the social media they were sponsored by the government because they came in BRT buses was not correct.

He explained: “The Governor has been preaching peace. So has the Deputy Governor, who addressed the protesters last Friday.

“The Governor has addressed them twice – at the Lekki Toll Gate and at the House of Assembly. He even carried a placard and marched with the youths after assuring them that he felt their pains and that it was legitimate for them to protest.

“Besides, the Governor visited the President to tender their five-point demand. He ensured that all the protesters arrested by the police were released unconditionally.

‘The enemies of progress who are not happy that Lagos is not on fire are the ones fueling the infernal lies that the government was sponsoring thugs to attack our protesting youths.

“They have been posting on the social media pictures suggesting that a Lagos Bus Service vehicle was conveying thugs.

“The bus in question was on its normal operation when it ran into a group of protesters.

“The passengers, who felt endangered, rushed out of the bus. They returned to continue their journey after the charging crowd had left.”

The Commissioner assured the government will never encourage thuggery or any act of violence that may put the lives and businesses of Lagosians at risk.

“We are strongly committed to ensuring that our youths, who have taken to the streets to air their views, are well protected.

“This should be a sober time for us all as we struggle to reverse the negative effects of COVID-19 on our economic and social lives, even as the experts are warning that a second wave is likely if we shun the safety guidelines we have all agreed to embrace.

“The government seeks the co-operation of all in ensuring that the crisis is put behind us as soon as possible,” he stressed.

VIDEO: Thugs descend on Fayose at Ondo PDP rally, remove his cap

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose was assaulted at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) mega rally in Ondo state on Wednesday.

Upon arrival at the venue of the rally, Fayose was accosted by some PDP supporters who removed his cap and threatened to beat him up.

The youths said Fayose deserves the treatment for insulting some elders of the party, especially Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP.

However, Fayose has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of masterminding the assault on him.

He described the assault as an attempt to kill him.

Fayose said he will report the incident to security agencies and the party relevant authorities for further investigation.

“That’s how late Chief Bola Ige’s cap was removed in Ile Ife, Osun State then and we all know what happened later,” the former governor stated.

Fayose said he will not wave the threat aside, adding that the masterminds “had it all planned and they followed it up by celebrating what they saw as the success of their plot. They even capped it up by circulating the video.

“So it was not an accident, it was planned. But those who planned it only succeeded in advertising their political myopism, because the popularity of the brand Ayo Fayose, Osokomole cannot be rubbished by such childish acts.

“That they must have seen in the reaction of the people at the rally and I am sure they know that they can’t get such a loud ovation even if they spend all the money in this world.

“As for me, I am unperturbed and I must say it clearly that those newcomers to the PDP and their old allies, who won’t mind spoiling the image of the party to achieve their aims will not be allowed to succeed,” he said

  • Oshiomhole using thugs to monitor my movement in Edo, Deputy Gov’s wife cries out

Oshiomhole using thugs to monitor my movement in Edo, Deputy Gov’s wife cries out

Wife of Edo State Deputy Governor Mrs. Maryann Shaibu has cried out over alleged threat to her life and family by the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Shaibu, in a petition through her solicitors, Idemudia Ilueminosen & Co, to Police Commissioner Lawan Jimeta, alleged that Oshiomhole did not only threaten to deal with her, but also declared that he (Oshiomhole) had sent thugs to monitor her in Etsako West Local Government, to carry out the threat of dealing with her.

She urged the police to investigate the alleged threat, to bring Oshiomhole and his cohorts to book and avert harm.

Meanwhile, Oshiomhole in a reaction through his media aide, Victor Oshioke, described Shaibu’s wife’s petition as nothing, but a futile attempt to divert the attention of Nigerians from the trending video of Mrs. Shaibu, threatening to flog women old enough to be her mother, if they dared to exercise their rights to attend any event other than the one she organised.

Oshioke said: “The petition is a calculated attempt to drag down the name of Comrade Oshiomhole. Shaibu and his wife should find another way to launder their family image, which has been badly damaged by their numerous unguarded public utterances, captured on video, threatening violence on Edo people.

“Comrade Oshiomhole is a man at peace with himself and his environment. He is focused on marketing the APC governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and his SIMPLE agenda manifesto to Edo people, for their ultimate benefit.”
