Chelsea forward, Timo Werner hints at exiting Stamford Bridge

Germany and Chelsea forward, Timo Werner has hinted at leaving Stamford Bridge this summer for a side that guarantees him regular football.

Werner said he wants to play constantly and have a chance of making the German team to the 2022 World Cup.

The 26-year-old is not happy that he was only able to make 15 Premier League starts last season, managing just 4 goals.

Werner said playing as a substitute in virtually all the games is very painful.

He believes such a situation where he had to watch from the bench as Thomas Tuchel settled for Kai Havertz, could kill his World Cup dreams.

Meanwhile one of Chelsea’s forwards Lukaku left Stamford Bridge for Inter Milan on loan this summer, but the acquisition of  Raheem Sterling has made the competition in the team stiffer.

Asked whether he can be happy at Chelsea next season, Werner said: “I could be happy everywhere,” providing a hint he could leave the Blues this summer.

“It is clear I want to play more and I should play more to first be in good shape for the World Cup and also to have a chance to play at the World Cup,” he told talkSPORT.

“It doesn’t change anything whether it is a winter World Cup or in the summer. I think if I play half of the season or the whole season, I should play. It doesn’t change anything in my mind.

“The manager always has different ideas, different thoughts, and what you need in different games.

“In many games, I was not in his thoughts so I try to change that. It is not different from last season, it was the same when Romelu came. We had a big, big competition. It’s still the same.”

  • Timo Werner would be mediocre without his pace – Van der Vaart

Timo Werner would be mediocre without his pace – Van der Vaart

Former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart has taken aim at Chelsea striker Timo Werner after last night’s two-goal performance.

Werner struck twice and produced an assist in Chelsea’s 3-3 draw at Champions League opponents Zenit St Petersburg.

But Van der Vaart said on Ziggo Sport: “He is a player who actually annoys you all the time.

“Compare him a bit with Luis Suarez, who also walked with his head down on the ball. I can make that comparison, because I played football at a high level.

“But it’s all so wild and blind, no overview at all. I just expect more from a player who has been obtained for so much money.

“He is a very special footballer, but he does score his goals. That is what some say, but I can be surprised about it. He is lucky that he is very fast, otherwise he would have just been a mediocre footballer.”

Timo Werner secures Germany’s ticket to 2022 FIFA World Cup

Germany became the first country to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Monday with Timo Werner scoring twice in a 4-0 win away to North Macedonia.

The fifth victory in five matches under new coach Hansi Flick, matching the record of predecessor Joachim Loew, has given Germany an unassailable lead at the top of Group J.

But that was also due to to Armenia losing 1-0 to Romania elsewhere.

Germany dominated throughout against the side who inflicted only a third-ever World Cup qualifying defeat against them at home in March.

But they needed until the second half to make the breakthrough.

Kai Havertz tapped into an empty net to cap a fine counter-attack in the 50th minute to break the North Macedonian resistance.

The lively Werner then smashed a quick-fire brace before teenager Jamal Musiala completed the rout with his first senior international goal.

Germany have 21 points from eight games before concluding the campaign in November at home to Liechtenstein and away to Armenia, who are now fourth on 12 points.

Romania, on 13, are best-placed to secure second and the play-off spot but North Macedonia, above Armenia on goal difference, are also in contention.

“We have now qualified, that is very, very important first of all for us and it gives us confidence for the next games,” Havertz said in an interview.

Team captain Manuel Neuer, back in goals after injury, agreed the team should now have high ambitions.

“If we play for Germany the goal is always to win titles, to reach the highest goals possible. That’s how we will approach it there.”

Flick made five changes to the team which beat Romania last time out, with Mueller and Havertz also coming into the attack and proving decisive.

Home goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski denied first Joshua Kimmich then Werner, who was actually offside, and had help from the post when the Chelsea forward beat him on the stroke of half-time.

It was Werner’s Stamford Bridge colleague Havertz who did find the net when a brilliant pass from Serge Gnabry released Mueller.

The Bayern Munich man laid the ball off for a simple finish rather than shoot himself.

“We have qualified as quickly as possible,” said Flick. “We also have to give the team a compliment for their attitude today (Monday).

“We can be happy that we’ve also finished this game with a win.”

Mueller, who notched the winner against Romania on Friday, was provider again to set up Werner in the 70th minute with a clever flick following a quick free-kick.

Werner’s superb curling shot from the edge of the penalty box three minutes later had Germany cruising.

In the closing stages, Musiala converted an assist from fellow substitute Karim Adeyemi.

Wife of Thiago Silva makes U-turn for Timo Werner

The wife of Thiago Silva has heaped praise on Chelsea teammate Timo Werner after their Champions League defeat of Real Madrid.

Werner nodded in Chelsea’s first goal in their 2-0 win over Real Madrid, converting from close range after a deft Kai Havertz lob came back off the crossbar.

The Germany forward spurned a glorious chance to score for Chelsea last week and Mrs Silva was quick to vent on her Instagram story about the £53million striker who has endured a tricky first season in England.

But after last night’s success, Isabele declared: “Werner, very good! That’s what I’m talking about,’ the 34-year-old said on her Instagram moments after the first goal. ‘You know! You are the best my friend, love you!”

  • I’m fine with assists than goals – Timo Werner

I’m fine with assists than goals – Timo Werner

Chelsea forward Timo Werner insisted he is fine with having more assists than goals as long as his side continues to win matches.

The Germany international grabbed the decisive assist against Manchester City on Saturday, as his square ball found Hakim Ziyech for the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win in the FA Cup semi-final.

Werner has come under fire for a lack of scoring in his first season at Chelsea but has managed a number of assists in 2020-21 as well.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after the game, Werner said: “I’ve had more assists than goals, which is unusual in the last year for me. As long as it helps the team it’s fine.

“It was good that I got the ball right for Hakim.”

Speaking about the game, the 25-year-old added: “I think the two best teams in England at the moment played against each other. It was a 50-50 game.

“We won because we made the counterattacks and got one goal. In the end we defended very well, like in the games before. I think we can say the best team won.

“In these types of games it’s very important to have good tactics, but in the end it’s the individual class that decides the game. That’s why we won the game.”

  • Timo Werner happy scoring back in Leipzig

Timo Werner happy scoring back in Leipzig

Chelsea striker Timo Werner is happy to be back in Leipzig with the Germany squad.

Werner, formerly of RB Leipzig, has admitted it is extra special returning to Leipzig now with the German national team.

After scoring twice against Ukraine, he said: “I’ve really been looking forward to coming back here.

“It felt a little like I was coming home after being on holiday. I always like returning to Leipzig so international games here are always twice as special for me.

“The Nations League was introduced so that you have competitive games against other very good teams. It’s a good test, especially ahead of the Euros.

“When you’re taking part in a competition, you always want to win and finish first in the group, qualify for the final four and then win that as well. That is the kind of success that brings a team together and helps it to improve.”

  • EPL: I’m enjoying Timo Werner – Lampard

EPL: I’m enjoying Timo Werner – Lampard

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is delighted with the form of Timo Werner.

Lampard picked out Werner’s record of eight goals in 12 appearances as particularly satisfying.

“I’m really pleased with Timo because when you make a big move, everybody expects you to come in and hit the ground running,” said the boss to chelseafc.com.

“They expect him to know every pass that they [his team-mates] want to make and them to know every run he wants to make. It doesn’t work that simply so there’s always a period where you’re striving on those levels.

“For Timo to produce those numbers and have the impact he’s had so far shows the quality levels of him. He’s very easy to manage, I’m enjoying it and I think he’s going to get even better for us.”

Werner reveals Premier League coach who gave him headstart

Chelsea star Timo Werner has said that Ralph Hasenhuttl helped develop him into the world-class forward he is today and is looking forward to a reunion with the Southampton boss.

Both forward and coach arrived at RB Leipzig in the summer of 2016, and while Werner remained for four years, Hasenhuttl departed after just a couple of seasons.

The 53-year-old, however, had a defining influence on Werner’s career, having talked the young forward into switching to Leipzig from Stuttgart.

“I talked a lot to Hasenhuttl before moving to Leipzig,” he told Chelsea’s official website . “He’s a very nice guy, very jokey, and from the first time we spoke to each other it was a good relationship.

“Leipzig was the next step for me, a different team with different possibilities. It was important for me when I left my hometown to be with a manager with a good idea of football and a good personality.

“He taught me a lot about pressing, and switching from defence to offence very fast when we win the ball back. That was really interesting and helped me a lot in my game. It gave me space for my movements and my strengths.”

  • Werner admits ‘crazy’ being around Lampard, Cech

Werner admits ‘crazy’ being around Lampard, Cech

Chelsea striker Timo Werner admits he has a hard time keeping his cool when surrounded by club legends.

The German arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer for a £47.5 million fee.

The 24-year-old has started the season impressively, playing as a striker and off the left wing.

And Werner admits when he interacts with manager Frank Lampard and technical director Petr Cech, he finds it tough to stop getting starstruck.

“As a child, you don’t see much of the teams in the Premier League but you see them in the Champions League, so you see Chelsea, Manchester United,” he told Three UK.

“These were the clubs in my youth that won a lot so maybe [Cristiano] Ronaldo or when you are here, you hear [about Didier] Drogba and also Frank Lampard the manager, they have a lot of legends in the club here.

“When you come here and see they are working for the club, you see them and you were like a child like 10 or something, you see Ashley Cole, Lampard or Petr Cech you think ‘it’s crazy, I’m here now with them!’ It’s a lot of fun.”

  • Choosing Chelsea over Liverpool was right call – Werner

Choosing Chelsea over Liverpool was right call – Werner

Chelsea striker Timo Werner says accepting a move to Stamford Bridge over Liverpool was the right decision.

The Germany international attracted plenty of interest this summer when he decided he was ready to leave RB Leipzig.

Liverpool were one of those chasing Werner, but in the end it was Chelsea who won the race after paying a fee of around £47.5million.

“I came here to win titles. Chelsea is a big club. A club who always wants to win and for me, I am a player who always wants to win every game,” said the forward.

“It is clear at the end we want to win titles. The last years we maybe don’t win so many titles, but I think now we have a very strong team and a young team that can develop and go through a period of a long time, where we can stay together because we are young and we want to win.

“That is a good way and what I want to reach here, because I came here to win titles and a lot of games.

“When I decided to leave Leipzig I talked to different clubs, of course, next to Chelsea. There were some other clubs that I talked to. But for me I don’t want to talk about so much about other clubs, because in the end I decided for Chelsea.

“Of course there were some other clubs also, like Liverpool – who have a great team, and also maybe I can fit good to some other teams.

“But at the end I decided [to join] Chelsea because for me it was the best decision I can take. Not only because of the style of football but also because of what they have shown to me.

“I think it was a hard decision in the end but I am very, very excited and proud that I decided like this because now when I have been here for at least one and a half months, it feels right.

“It feels good. The team is brilliant. We have some very good, but always calm and nice players. It is fun to player here at Chelsea and to be part of the team.

“We can do very well with this team in the next few months and the next few years.”
