Democracy: Tinubu playing god as his worshippers applaud – By Ikeddy Isiguzo

BOLA Ahmed Tinubu is said to be a democrat. He flaunts his self-exile as the certificate for that sacrifice and the sacrifices of those who stayed home and faced General Sani Abacha’s bullets do not matter.

Many died. Others were thrown into irrecoverable circumstances. There is no memory in their names.
Tinubu does not know these things. Rather, he behaves as if he was at the centre of the democracy(?) we appear to have. Hundreds of thousands of very ordinary Nigerians routinely seized Nigeria, asking Abacha to leave. Return to civil rule, not necessarily democracy, was won with their lives

Did Tinubu spend the discomfort of exile admiring Abacha? Were there hints that he picked from the five Abacha-created political parties that were falling over each other to adopt Abacha? We watched in amazement at Abacha’s version of democracy that we never expected in Nigeria.

Abacha was military. Abacha hardly spoke to us unless to issue another order. Abacha kept the same type of distance that Tinubu maintains on issues that affect our people. Abacha too was democratic if not a democrat. An election was on the way in which he would have been the only candidate.

Where Abacha was greedy with power, he still wanted us to beg him enough so that the will of Nigerians would be expressed through his election. We started begging him, just anything to please Abacha.
The million marches started. Parts of Nigeria started begging him to save the country. Millions of prescient Nigerians did not know Abacha was a nationalist, a lover of Nigeria.

Abacha was spartan. He saved billions of Dollars for Nigeria. Did he know that those after him would not be as prudent? Nigeria gets “returns” of the money Abacha saved abroad for Nigeria. He has gone for 27 years.
Tinubu is different. He is not greedy, but strategic. Nigerians one thought had balls to tell him democracy was not a one-party state are on long queues trying to reach him with the same message – only Tinubu until 2031.
He has not even completed two years of his first tenure and he has been nominated to run for a second term as the only candidate of his party, and other parties that have pledged their unalloyed loyalty to him.

It is the type of loyalty one of my colleagues calls “blind loyalty”. Any suggestion of clarity on issues is deemed opposition. Blind loyalists do not wear glasses. They will not permit themselves to see anything, lest they say something wrong.

There is a problem, though. Tinubu has claimed there was nothing wrong with one-party state. He wants more people to join his APC where newest joiners are ahead of those who have “suffered” for the party.
He wants us to be patient because his arrival has put Nigeria on the path of steady growth and progress.
What has changed? We are urged to suffer today for a better tomorrow? Whose tomorrow? Abacha was a man of few words. He acted.

Tinubu has transited from President to a god whose worshippers place above the law as they in obeisance crave for his attention for one more minute as politicians of note. They anticipate his wishes and go beyond what he wants.

We are the ones turning Tinubu to a different democrat. He visits a State to “commission” projects, the Governor joins the President’s party, hands his own party over to the President.

The ill-fitting attires they wear sometimes flash on the screens as if it is a clown’s day. It cannot be. We are dealing with lives, many of who have done nothing wrong to put them on the front line of today’s crushing poverty.

Hope is still expressed in tiny voices that stake their right to be seen and heard in the fleeting din to “off the mikes” unless for those who say that one-party state is a democracy.

We hail Nigeria. It is still our own dear native land where the various tongues and tribes with their differences will stand in brotherhood.

Nigeria has too many tongues for one language to utter them.

    Finally…
FOR the second time in about three years, the picture of a baby strapped to the dead mother’s back has made a round of the social media. In each case, the baby was alive, unaware of the mother’s death. In the recent case, the baby was still sucking the mother. Both heinous acts were blamed on “foreign bandits”, who if we understand the Federal Government, cannot be attacked or removed from Nigeria because “they are not Nigerians”. The equipment we keep buying to fight insecurity cannot be deployed against “foreign bandits”.

How do we find pleasure in explaining the patterned death of Nigerians with trite platitudes? The attitudes are more tormenting than the vacant stare of the babies which reminds the so-minded that care has taken a long vacation. Nothing stops the hollow rites of swearing to adhere to the demands of the Constitution. Section 14(2) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 declares that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government. Could what is going on be the appropriate interpretation of the Section?

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede and his supporters believe that whatever went wrong with the 2025 UTME was about them and they are in the best position to find the answers. What happened to the 2025 may not be isolated. The “glitch” explanation does not say anything – the cause, whether it was targeted at some candidates, as some claim, if it can happen again, and what and who are responsible.

Further investigations are required by bodies other than JAMB and those who work for it, including those who stopped the teary Professor Oloyede from resigning. The entire test should be redone for all candidates.

EXCLUSION of the South East in major projects used to be muted but the Tinubu administration confirms it openly. The intentionality of the decisions also comes with a finality that cannot be lost on anyone. We have not done with the exclusion of the zone from a pre-census committee, the only zone so treated when Tinubu and Company also made no provision for the Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority. Senator Kenneth Eze, APC-Ebonyi, in a motion lamented the exclusion of the Anambra/Imo River Basin from the 2025 budgetary provision for irrigation. Senate Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, popularly called MOB, quickly said the motion would be withdrawn to enable the Senate leadership discuss the matter with the Minister of Water Resources. Nothing was wrong with the exclusion of South East from a N380 billion irrigation budget that was spread across the country. The motion must have rankled MOB. How dare Senate Eze? MOB is chiefly credited with the bill that changed the national anthem from the 1978 one to the 1960 anthem.

IT took a closed-door session to calm nerves on Tuesday when Senate President Obong Godswill Akpabio tried to stop Senator Henry Seriake Dickson from making a contribution on Nigeria’s growing insecurity. “Mr. President, with due respect, you are not the President of Nigeria. This is the Senate, and we all have equal voices here. We are elected to represent our people, and you cannot continue to act in a way that stifles this legislative body,” Dickson said. Akpabio responded, “I have no intention of overriding anyone’s opinion. My duty is to maintain order and ensure decorum in this chamber.” What happened in the closed session was only for the Distinguished.

Ndume hails Tinubu’s appointments of Northerners into key Federal positions

Ex- Senate Leader and Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his appointments of Nigerians from the three geo- political zones in the North to key Federal government parastatals and agencies.

In the announcement made on Friday, about 12 individuals from the North were placed into strategic national positions.

The list included,Yazid Shehu Umar Danfulani (Zamfara) as Managing Director, Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC); Alhaji Hamza Ibrahim Baba (Kano) as
Programme Manager, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP); Alhaji Abubakar Umar Jarengol (Adamawa)
Executive Director, Operations – Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC), Barrister Sama’ila Audu (Katsina), Executive Director, Administration – Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Professor Musa Garba Mai Tafsiri (Kebbi), Executive Secretary, National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, Comrade Isa Aremu, ( Kwara) Director-General, Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies ( MINILS),amongst others.

The ranking lawmaker in a statement he personally signed and issued to newsmen on Saturday described the appointments as a reflection of President Tinubu’s commitment to inclusive governance.

Recall that Senator Ndume had last April expressed concern over lopsidedness in the Tinubu’s administration appointments which he described as a clear violation of the Federal Character principle, enshrined in the Constitution.

Citing Section 14 (3) of the 1999 Constitution, he maintained that such imbalance and clear violation of the Constitution, could deepen political discontent and fuel opposition coalitions against the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress.
But in his weekend statement, the former Chief Whip of the Senate said he was impressed by the action of the President which he noted has shown that he is a leader with a listening ears.
He said:” President Tinubu is someone who surrenders to constructive criticisms.
“I have known him to be a fair minded, cosmopolitan person. Yes, we are all bound to make mistakes. No one is infallible.
“I could recall that our leaders in the North, including my humble self, who felt jolted over recent appointments into key Federal positions, raised our voices, screaming against the perceived imbalances.
” The hallmark of a good leader and Statesman is to quickly adjusts himself when he takes a decision or makes a policy pronouncement that a large section of the people finds unpopular and uncomfortable with.
“President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has demonstrated several times that he is a responsive leader.
“This recent appointment of Northerners into key positions in Federal parastatals and agencies was meant to address the imbalances thrown up by his previous appointments which left the North stranded.”
Senator Ndume who declared that he has nothing personal against President Tinubu and his administration, restated his conviction in the capacity of President Tinubu to meet the expectations of Nigerians in delivery of dividends of democracy.
While congratulating the appointees, Senator Ndume urged them not to fail the nation by justifying the confidence reposed in them which informed their individual nominations.
He further assured President Tinubu of his loyalty to him at all times, not shirking in his duty as a lawmaker to point out perceived excesses of the Executive.

Danfulani, the Turakin Zamfara, is expected to bring new vigour and strategic direction to NAIC, a critical institution responsible for providing insurance cover to Nigeria’s agricultural sector against risks such as drought, pests, diseases, and other natural disasters.

A seasoned administrator and banker, Danfulani holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Arts and Management from the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. He has held notable roles at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and previously served as Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Zamfara State.

In the appointment letter, Akume noted that Danfulani’s emoluments and conditions of service would be guided by the provisions of the “Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) (Amendment) Act, 2008”.

The appointment has been widely applauded as a recognition of Danfulani’s leadership qualities, technical expertise, and commitment to national development.

Danfulani is expected to focus on strengthening the insurance framework for Nigerian farmers, expanding access to agricultural insurance, and ensuring NAIC plays a key role in the country’s food security strategy.

Endorsement: Tinubu’s ex-adviser Baba-Ahmed slams APC leaders, says they’re disconnected from reality

Former Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Political Affairs, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has slammed the second tenure endorsement of the President by All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders.

Recall the party’s leaders at APC’s National Summit, held in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, adopted Tinubu as the party’s candidate in the 2027 election.

The party’s National Chairman, Umar Ganduje, said Tinubu’s performance in two years was commendable.

For the Chairman of Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), Governor Hope Uzodimma, Nigeria is undeniably getting better under President Tinubu.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas and Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, also took turns to commend the efforts of the President in reviving the nation’s economy.

Reacting to the endorsement on his X handle, the former spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) said APC leaders’ action showed they are disconnected from the reality of the citizens.

Baba-Ahmed accused APC leaders of cheering themselves for work well done when the citizens face hardship daily.

“APC’s leaders are either poor politicians or they live in their own world. They fire their starter gun, run alone and declare themselves winner. This is a time for some humility and disciplined hard work. Leaders stay with their people in difficult times. They do not shut them out,” he wrote.

I have set goals for you – Tinubu tells NNPCL board

President Bola Tinubu has urged the new Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL) board to consolidate the gains of the ongoing economic reforms, which have attracted commendations for the resilience and competitiveness of the Nigerian economy.

This is contained in a statement by the Presidential spokesman, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Board of NNPC Ltd. at the State House, Tinubu said he selected the board members painstakingly to ensure quality leadership.

“When I started searching, it took a while to come up with the kind of character that you represent. You represent the best in the industry, and I have set goals for you.

“You have the reputation, resourcefulness and experience to help the country. It is a call to duty for you.

“I believe you are among the best the industry can offer,” he said.

The President said the ongoing economic reforms had yielded results, with local and international acknowledgements.

“Nigeria has come of age. It is now more competitive and turning the corner, and with your highly respected team, I can relax and attend to other issues.

“Thank you for accepting the opportunity to serve your country and our dear country,” the President stated.
Tinubu told the board that the volatility in the world’s economy would require looking inward for solutions, and Nigerians would depend on repositioning the NNPC Ltd.

He added, “Explore all options for a win-win situation for Nigeria. I am so proud of you and believe you will succeed.”

Mr Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State, Petroleum, thanked the President for assembling the team he described as the best in Africa.

Ahmadu Kida, the Chairman of the Board, thanked the President for the opportunity to serve the country.

He said the new Board would uphold the highest standard of leadership, courage and integrity in delivering on the President’s mandate.

  • Tinubu not controlled by Cabal – FG

Tinubu not controlled by Cabal – FG

The Federal Government has refuted insinuation in certain quarters that President Bola Tinubu is being controlled by cabal and shadowy inner circle in his government.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, denied this in Abuja on Thursday while delivering an address at the APC National Summit with the theme “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey So Far.”

The minister said that the President, rather, welcomed a wide range of perspectives, and took informed decisions solely in the best interest of Nigeria.

“You need to study the president very well. You can have your voice; you can say what you want to say; he will listen to you but his decision is ultimately his own. I think it’s important for us to recognise that,” he said.

Speaking on the theme of the summit, Idris said, President Tinubu remained committed to transforming Nigeria through the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as a bold, people-first blueprint turning obstacles into opportunities.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda iis about positively impacting the lives of the people of Nigeria, through bold decisions designed to unleash the full scale of Nigerian potential, in a way that has never been seen or done before,” he said.

The minister recalled that Tinubu inherited a nation at a crossroads and immediately moved with clarity and courage.

“Among the first decisions the President made were the removal of petrol and foreign exchange subsidies, which had ,been amongst the biggest impediments to Nigeria’s progress, costing us billions of dollars in losses and waste,” he said.

Idris noted that “true leadership involves the ability to make decisions that might be tough in the short term, but are guaranteed to deliver lasting returns.’”

He said the outcomes of the president’s reforms were now evident across all sectors through large-scale infrastructure, social investment programmes, revamping of the nation’s mining and petroleum sectors among others.

“At the federal level, the increased revenues have set a new standard for ambition and execution of large-scale infrastructure projects,” Idris said.

He highlighted four signature highways — the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, Calabar-Abuja Superhighway, and Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Highway.

Idris said the four signature highways totalled more than 2,600km and linked communities and economies across the country.

“Another flagship project driving regional integration is the Kano-Kaduna Standard Gauge Railway.

“This vital corridor is a key component of the Lagos-Kano railway modernisation plan and is being delivered as a priority under the Renewed Hope Agenda.,” he said.

In the housing sector, the minister said the administration launched the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Projects, “an ambitious intervention aimed at addressing the nation’s housing deficit while stimulating job creation and urban renewal.

To support the growing digital economy, Idris said that the Federal Government deployed 90,000km of fiber optic cable nationwide.

He described the on-going project as “unprecedented scale of broadband infrastructure which will not only bridge Nigeria’s digital divide but also support smart governance.

He added that the fibre optical cable project would attract digital investments, and enable secure e-services in education, healthcare, commerce, etc.

Idris said about 300,000 Nigerian students are now benefitting from the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), while workers are accessing the new Consumer Credit Scheme to buy essential goods.

On security, Idris said, the military neutralised and arrested thousands of terrorists and bandits and rescued nearly 10,000 hostages.

He said, more than 25 new aircraft had been acquired, and the Navy had taken delivery of four new vessels.

He hailed the president for establishing the Ministry of Livestock Development and Regional Development Commissions across the six geo-political zones.

The Minister emphasized that the Renewed Hope Agenda is holistic and people-centered.

Tinubu did not create economic problem we face – Eno

President Bola Tinubu did not create the economic challenges currently affecting Nigeria, says Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom.

He stated on Tuesday while speaking to State House correspondents after meeting Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The governor praised Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to revive Nigeria’s economy and improve infrastructure across the country.

“As I often say, President Tinubu did not create the economic problem we face today.

“I believe he is doing his best and deserves our support to complete the job,” he added.

Speaking about his tenure, Eno said his administration has enhanced basic amenities in Akwa Ibom over the past two years.

“In Akwa Ibom, we’ve addressed key areas and are making steady progress.

“We’ve made gains in education, healthcare, roads, and markets — our presence is felt across sectors.

“The first two years focused on rural development. We’re now prioritising major infrastructure and promoting tourism in the state,” Eno said.

He acknowledged his predecessors’ roles in developing Akwa Ibom and pledged to build on their legacies.

The governor said, “We’ve continued the work of past leaders — from Obong Attah to Akpabio, to Udom Emmanuel and now myself.

“It’s a strong foundation. Each leader builds on it. Akwa Ibom is progressing well compared to many other states.”

On youth empowerment, Eno said his administration launched an employment portal to boost job creation and engagement.

“We are investing in young people through skills training and support for small and medium enterprises.

“We are making sure youths gain employment, and the portal is helping in that direction.

“We aim to rebuild the middle class through youth empowerment and enterprise support,” the governor said.
