Release details of your assets, Shettima, others should follow, SERAP advises Tinubu

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the Code of Conduct Bureau to publish his declared assets.

SERAP also urged Tinubu to encourage Vice-President Kashim Shettima, ministers, state governors, and National Assembly leaders to follow suit.

This was stated in a press release shared on Sunday but dated December 28, 2024, and signed by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare.

The organisation commended Tinubu for his recent statement during his first Presidential Media Chat, in which he indicated that he might request the CCB to release his assets.

“We welcome your reported decision to consider asking the CCB to publish your assets as a significant development and a signal of your intent, willingness, and commitment to show leadership on this important matter of public interest,” the letter read.

However, SERAP urged the President to act swiftly, stating that “consideration” would carry greater weight if promptly followed by directives.

“Your immediate action to request the CCB to publish your assets and encouraging your Vice-President, ministers, National Assembly leaders, state governors, and local government chairmen to do the same will promote public trust, transparency, and accountability,” SERAP stated.

The organisation highlighted the damaging effects of secrecy surrounding asset declarations by public officials, describing it as a major enabler of corruption across all levels of government.

“Secrecy in the assets declared by high-ranking public officials to the CCB continues to facilitate corruption in the country’s 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and within ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs), and local governments,” the letter emphasised.

SERAP also linked transparency in asset declarations to the Supreme Court ruling on July 11, 2024, which barred state governors from taking over local government funds. The group urged Tinubu to enforce this ruling.

“Transparency and accountability at the state and local government levels won’t materialise without your push for the immediate implementation of the Supreme Court decision,” SERAP added.

“Despite the judgment, several state governors reportedly continue to divert local government funds.”

The group stressed the urgency of enforcing the ruling to reduce corruption and ensure public funds earmarked for local governments are used for essential services.

“Your expressed commitment to transparency should include holding governors accountable for contempt of court if they persist in disobeying the Supreme Court judgment,” SERAP wrote.

The letter highlighted the broader implications of corruption, describing it as a fundamental threat to Nigeria’s democracy, eroding public trust and worsening economic hardship.

“Corruption is one of the greatest challenges to improving Nigeria’s democracy and rebuilding a transparent, accountable, and participatory system of governance,” the organisation noted.

“One way corrupt politicians perpetuate corruption is through hiding assets.”

SERAP referenced various legal provisions, including the Nigerian Constitution, the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption, and the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which mandate asset declaration by public officials.

“The Nigerian Constitution recognises the public’s right to access details of assets declared by public officials,” SERAP stressed, referencing paragraph 3(c) of Part 1 of the Third Schedule and paragraph 11 of the Fifth Schedule.

The organisation expressed hope that Tinubu’s leadership would set a precedent for transparency and accountability across all levels of government.

“We hope that these recommendations will guide your steps in asking the CCB to publish your assets and encouraging others to do the same,” SERAP stated.

Austerity measure: Tinubu advises Nigerians to off gadgets to save electricity bills

President Bola Tinubu has advised Nigerians to apply austerity measures by switching off electrical gadgets to save electricity bills.

He said “It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill, switch off the light, let’s learn to manage,” Tinubu said on Monday in a chat with reporters at his Bourdillon residence in the highbrow Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain also said he does not believe in price control and he won’t go that path. “I don’t believe in price control, we will work hard to supply the market,” he said.

After his inauguration in May 2023, Tinubu, former Lagos governor, energy costs skyrocketed, especially with the removal of petrol subsidy and electricity tarrif hike. Petrol prices more than quadrupled, soaring from less than N200 per litre to over N1,100 in many parts of the country. The naira also took a nosedive, wobbling from around N700/$ to N1,600.

On April 3, 2024, the electricity regulator raised tariff for customers said to be under the Band A classification, with customers now paying N225 kilowatt per hour from N66, a development that has been heavily criticised by many Nigerians, considering the immediacy of the tariff hike and the current hardship in the land.

Food and commodity inflation have skyrocketed as Nigerians battle what can pass for the worst cost of living crisis since the country’s independence over six decades ago but Tinubu has insisted that his reforms are necessary to set the country on the path of prosperity.

2025 budget will bridge infrastructure deficit – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday said that the borrowing envisaged in the 2025 budget was targeted at providing critical infrastructure.

The President, in his maiden media chat, said the country had a serious infrastructure shortage.

“We have to put money on the long-term matching projects, we don’t have the short-term funds to manage long-term projects. It’s mismatch.

“That’s why we have headed in the wrong road in the past. I want to think about prosperity. I want to think about tomorrow, today,” he said.

Tinubu said the borrowing was meant to address capital projects such as roads, which were terrible.

“Our internet is not up to the level that we want as a technology-driven nation. We are still deficient in power generation. We need a very strong push.

“It’s like a pregnant woman. New expectations and new contractions and labour pains. You go through it, the baby is born. You are happy.

“If that baby is alive, you have the joy, and that is what we are working on. It’s not just because we want to inflict pain on anybody,” the President said.

He said his administration shared the same value with Nigerians.

“We want this country to grow. There is no other way out of it; we must invest in our prosperity today,” Tinubu said.

  • No regret removing fuel subsidy – President Tinubu

No regret removing fuel subsidy – President Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday said he had no regret removing fuel subsidy.

The president, who stated this during his first media chat, said fuel subsidy removal was necessary to prevent the country from bankruptcy.

Tinubu had, during his inauguration as president on May 29, 2023, announced the immediate removal of fuel subsidy, with the price of premium motor spirit (PMS) experiencing steady increase since then.

However, the price has started coming down gradually, particularly with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery announcing downward review of the price of the commodity.

The president also said it was not necessary to phase the fuel subsidy removal.

“It is part of the fear that is unnecessary. No matter how you cut it or slice it in segments, you still have to meet the bills.

“So, cut your cloth according to your size. It is what we have to manage. Management is the issue, and we have no choice but to pull the brakes. Otherwise, we were headed for slippery slopes,” Tinubu said.

The president said that with fuel subsidy, the country was spending what was meant for future generations.

He was emphatic that the fuel subsidy removal was necessary to prevent smugglers from taking what belonged to Nigerians.

“That doesn’t affect me; it affects smuggling. Plus, you have expenditures that you don’t have revenue for.

“I don’t want to question people who have five limousines on the road. We should teach management with all our programmes. We have to manage our resources.

“There is no way you will give out fuel and allow the entire neighbouring countries enjoy it like father Christmas,” the president said.

PDP hammers Tinubu, insists food stampedes confirm alarming hunger

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the three recent food stampedes in Nigeria as “an ugly testament to the alarming level of misery, poverty, hunger, starvation, sense of hopelessness and desperation for survival currently plaguing our nation” under the President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

In a statement on Sunday, PDP spokesman Debo Ologunagba said the tragic stampedes at private food distribution events in Oyo and Anambra states as well as Abuja which claimed the lives of over 60 citizens could have been averted.

The PDP commiserated with the families of the victims of the three food queue stampedes and called for urgent medical attention for the survivors.

The party said, “The PDP is devastated that the APC-led administration has wrecked our once thriving economy and pushed millions of Nigerians deeper into abject poverty and hunger with many citizens, not being able to afford their daily meals, now resorting to suicide and desperate measures including slavery mission abroad and fighting for crumbs for survival.

“It is heartbreaking that despite our abundant resources as a nation, Nigerians have been subjected to agonizing life where they die struggling for food.”

The PDP said the APC administration should wake up and not continue in “arrogant false performance claims including empty assurances of food sufficiency while deliberately failing to make the required investments to boost the productive sector, particularly in agriculture and food production”.

The party said the Tinubu government should immediately “review the hasty implementation of the suffocating policies of abrupt increase in the price of petroleum products and the floating of the Naira, despite the crippling consequences on the productive sector and life-discounting effect on the citizenry”.

The PDP called on Nigerians to hold the Tinubu-led APC administration responsible for the remote cause of these tragic occurrences for which it must recompense.

“Our Party insists that any administration that is sensitive and cares for the people would have since introduced intervention programmes to ease the suffering and improve on the welfare of the masses which is the primary purpose of government,” the PDP said.

    Oborevwori bridge-builder, model political leader – Tinubu(Photos)

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has described Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, as a bridge-builder and model political leader, following the calibre of persons across political divides that graced his son’s wedding in Asaba.

President Tinubu stated this at the wedding between Mr Clinton Oborevwori and his hearthrob Knowledge Davidson at the Living Faith Church, Asaba, on Saturday.

President Tinubu, who was represented at the occasion by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, said Governor Oborevwori since he came into office had been a governor for all Deltans.

He lauded the Delta Governor for being a pan-Deltan and detribalised Governor, saying if all leaders shun political and religious inclinations, Nigeria would be a better place for all citizens to fulfill their God-given destinies.

While wishing the couple success in their matrimony, President Tinubu, charged them to allow Christ be the driver of their marriage and reminded the couples of the need to live in accordance with their marrital oath.

In an interview at the ceremony, father of the groom and Governor of Delta State, Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, his brother Governors and all guests at the ceremony for honouring him and his family, describing him as a good man who doesn’t look at issues of political parties in his dealings.

“Mr President has sent the Minster of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, who is also one of our own to represent him here and he spoke very well and Deltans are very happy.

“We are not surprised because he is our in-law, the wife is partly from here so we are very happy”, Oborevwori said.

Continuing, the Governor said: “It is with great joy to the Oborevwori family that one of my sons is getting married today, the wedding went well successfully and we give God the praise.

“It is the joy of every parent seeing their children getting married after raising them to that particular age of getting married. I am very happy today and may God continue to bless their marriage.”

He advised the couple to remain united, saying; “there is no perfect marriage and they need to persevere because marriage is an institution you don’t graduate from.

“It is all about patience and understanding and they should also be prayerful because it is with prayers that they can move forward and have a very peaceful home”.

The Chairman of the occasion and Governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Dauda Lawal, said marriage was a union of honour hence the need for couples to live exemplary lifestyle.

He said the array of personalities drawn from different political parties, business community, technocrats and well wishers was a clear testament to the governor’s detribalised disposition.

He advised the couple to uphold understanding as a tool to overcome marrital challenges, pointing out that there was need to guard against third party interference in their union.

In a sermon on how togetherness forms success in marriages, the State Pastor of the Winners Church, Pastor Adekunle Shiyanbade, said any union anchored on fear of God, selfless love, truth and companionship will overcome all marrital challenges.

Pastor Shiyanbade said the cracks in most marriages was due to poor communication, unwarranted secrecy, prayerlessness and insincerity.

He congratulated the new couple, Mr and Mrs Clinton Oborevwori for finding frank love in each other and charged them to allow Christ remain at the centre of their marriage.

The cleric said the decline in morality in the society was traceable to breakages in marriage and advocated the need for couples to keep at bay anything that could jeopardise their union.

The marriage ceremony was attended by Chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, Governors of Adamawa, Ahmadu Fintiri; Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Douye Diri of Bayelsa; Sim Fubara, (Rivers); Dapo Abiodun (Ogun); Caleb Muftwang, (Plateau); Dapo Oyebanji, (Ekiti); Usman Ododo, (Kogi); Senator Hope Uzodinma, (Imo); Wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde; Wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs Cecilia Otti, Wife of Sokoto State Governor, Fatima Aliyu and her Yobe State counterpart, Mrs Mai Mala Buni.

Umar Damagun, Representative of Senate President, Senator Joel-Onowhakpo Thomas, Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Heinekens Lokpobiri, former President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, Chief of Defense Staff General Christopher Musa, and Mr Julius Rone of UTM Oil and Gas, members of National Assembly, members of the Delta State House of Assembly, Commissioners, other top government functionaries and captains of industries.

Tinubu cancels Lagos events to honour FCT, Anambra stampede victims

President Bola Tinubu has cancelled all his official events in Lagos on Saturday, including his attendance at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta in honour of the stampedes victims in Abuja and Okija, Anambra.

The two tragedies claimed many lives and left many others injured.

Tinubu was scheduled to watch the boat parade and other activities of the Boat Regatta from the waterfront of his Queen’s Drive residence in Ikoyi, Mr Bayo Onanuga, his spokesman, said in a statement.

Dignitaries, including top officials of the Lagos State Government and chiefs from the state, were already seated when the president cancelled his appearance following briefings on the tragedies.

Commiserating with the victims of the incidents in Anambra and the FCT, Tinubu urged states and relevant authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures immediately.

He said that it was very disturbing that the events at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and a community Centre in Okija, Anambra.

Tinubu said the two tragic incidents bore a distressing resemblance to the recent incident in Ibadan, Oyo State.

He said local and state authorities should no longer tolerate operational lapses by organisations and corporate bodies involved in charitable and humanitarian activities.

While praying for the peaceful repose of the innocent Nigerians who died in the stampede,  Tinubu wished the injured quick recovery.

He reiterated that the mishaps were avoidable if event planners adhered to necessary safeguards and protocols to ensure pre and post event safety.

”In a season of joy and celebration, we grieve with fellow citizens mourning the painful losses of their loved ones. Our prayers of divine comfort and healing are with them,” Tinubu said.

He wished the Lagos State Government, organisers of the boat regatta, themed ”Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life”  a hitch-free festival.

Tinubu’s 2025 budget projection: Inflation will reduce by15%, Dollar to N1,500

President Bola Tinubu has said that the 2025 budget forecasts that inflation will decline from current 34.6% to 15% next year.

He said this during his presentation of the N47.9 trillion 2025 budget proposal to a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday.

The President also said that the exchange rate will improve from approximately N1,700 per dollar to N1,500.

According to Tinubu, this is an ambitious but necessary budget to secure our future.”

“The Budget projects inflation will decline from the current rate of 34.6 per cent to 15 per cent next year, while the exchange rate will improve from approximately 1,700 naira per US dollar to 1,500 naira, and a base crude oil production assumption of 2.06 million barrels per day,”Tinubu said.

He said the budget projections are based upon observations such as reduction of petroleum products importation, increased export of finished petroleum products, bumper harvest driven by enhanced security, reducing reliance on food imports, among others.

Tinubu listed highlights of the budget to include defence and security – N4.91tn, infrastructure – N4.06tn, health – N2.4tn, education – N3.5tn, among others.

Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship following incessant increase in inflation and volatile exchange rate that has seen dollar exchange as high as N1,700 in recent days.

On Monday, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Nigeria’s headline inflation rate rose to 34.60% in November 2024 from 33.88% in October 2024.

The November inflation rate showed an increase of 0.72% points compared to the October 2024 inflation rate, according to NBS’s latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report which measures the rate of change in prices of goods and services.

“On a year-on-year basis, the Headline inflation rate was 6.40% points higher than the rate recorded in November 2023 (28.20%). This shows that the Headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) increased in November 2024 compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., November 2023),” the Bureau said.

Significantly, food inflation rate in November 2024 was 39.93% on a year-on-year basis, 7.08% points higher than the rate recorded in November 2023 (32.84%).

  • Defence, infrastructure, education top as Tinubu presents N47.9trn 2025 budget

Defence, infrastructure, education top as Tinubu presents N47.9trn 2025 budget

Defence and insecurity , infrastructure, health and education were some of the sectors with high allocations in the N47.9tn Budget Proposal presented by President Bola Tinubu before a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday afternoon.

“It is with great pleasure that I lay before this distinguished joint session of the National Assembly, the 2025 Budget of the National Assembly of Nigeria titled, ‘The Resurrection Budget’ security peace, building prosperity,” Tinubu said as he concluded his 30-minute speech at 1:10pm on Wednesday.

Earlier in his presentation, the President listed some of the highlights of the budget as defence and security – N4.91tn, infrastructure – N4.06tn, health – N2.4tn, education – N3.5tn, among others.

He expressed commitment to economic renewal, thanking all Nigerians for embarking on the journey of reform and transformation in the last 18 months together.

The President said the economy is responding to stimulus and that his government would continue to take the right steps for economic progress. “The reforms yielding results, no reversals,” he said.

Tinubu stressed that food security is non-negotiable, adding that the government is taking steps to ensure Nigerians feed and not go to bed hungry.

Tinubu said, “Our 2025 is not just another statement of projected government revenue and expenditure; it is one that calls for action.

It is disheartening that those who have not taken the time to understand these bills are the loudest critics. I urge all Nigerians, especially those in public office, to engage with these vital reforms thoughtfully. This initiative marks the first comprehensive tax reform since Nigeria’s independence, presenting a transformative opportunity for rejuvenating small and medium enterprises and enhancing the livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians.

“These reforms will not only improve Nigeria’s revenue profile but also create a more conducive and internationally competitive business environment, transforming our tax system to support sustainable development.”
