Benue bloodbath: Tor Tiv laments, tells Tinubu we’re facing calculated genocidal invasion

The Tor Tiv V, James Ayatse, has declared that what they’re facing in Benue is a calculated genocidal attack by herder terrorists.

He dismissed claims that the killings in Benue State are the results of clashes between herders and farmers, describing such claims as misinformation.

He spoke during the ongoing meeting between President Bola Tinubu and stakeholders in Benue on Wednesday.

He said that such information had led to suggestions to the Benue people to remain tolerant and learn to be accommodating.

Ayatse said that the killings were a calculated, well-planned, full-scale genocidal invasion and land-grabbing campaign in the state by “herder terrorists and bandits” that had been on for decades.

He said, “We do have grave concerns about the misinformation and misrepresentation of the security crisis in Benue State. Your Excellency, it’s not herders-farmers clashes, it’s not communal clashes, it’s not reprisal attacks or skirmishes.

It is this misinformation that has led to suggestions such as ‘remain tolerant, negotiate for peace, learn to live with your neighbours’.”

“What we are dealing with here in Benue is a calculated, well-planned, full-scale genocidal invasion and land grabbing campaign by header terrorists and bandits, which has been going on for decades and is worsening every year.

“Wrong diagnosis will always lead to wrong treatment. So, we are dealing with something far more sinister than we think about. It’s not learning to live with your neighbors; it is dealing with the war,” the traditional ruler added.

Admiral Ndubusi Kanu’s widow lauds Tinubu for June 12 honour

Mrs Gladys Kanu, the widow of Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for the posthumous national honour conferred on the June 12 hero.

Tinubu, in his June 12 address to the National Assembly, conferred the posthumous award of Commander of the Order of the Niger on Kanu, whose legacies were described as inspirational on the nation’s democratic journey.

Born on November 3, 1943, at Ovim in Isikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, Kanu died on January 13, 2021, at 77 years.

Kanu was renowned for his chest alongside other chieftains of the National Democratic Coalition and allied human rights bodies and interest groups to fight for the revalidation of the June 12, 1993, election.

The election was declared as Nigeria’s freest and fairest, and won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.

In a statement she signed, Mrs Kanu praised the President for appreciating the sacrifices of her husband for the nation’s democracy.

She stated, “On behalf of myself, the only wife of Admiral Godwin Ndubuisi Kanu and the children, I wish to thank the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces for the conferment of national honours on my husband and father, Admiral Godwin Ndubuisi Kanu, during Your Excellency’s June 12, 2025 address to a joint session of the National Assembly.

“The honour is to appreciate his sacrifices for the country’s democracy. Admiral was a highly principled man; he continued with the struggle for 28 years from 1993 to 2021.”

She noted Kanu’s commitment to the June 12 struggle, pointing to several times he hosted NADECO meetings.

“On days of NADECO meetings in our house, he would call me during working hours to invite my best caterers for a sumptuous buffet for NADECO members in our home,” she added.

Kanu was a Nigerian naval officer, military governor, a businessman with an interest in the maritime industry, a pro-democracy activist, a humanist and a nationalist of note.

During the civil war, as a young officer, he fought on the Biafran side and later went back to join his former colleagues on the Nigerian side at the cessation of hostilities.

In July 1975, he was appointed a member of the Supreme Military Council under the late Murtala Mohammed regime. Later, Gen Olusegun Obasanjo, as military President, appointed him first as military governor of Old Imo State and later for

Yelewata bloodbath: Senate leadership to accompany Tinubu to Benue today

The Senate leadership has said it would accompany President Bola Tinubu to Benue State today (Wednesday), to condole with the people of Yelewata village over the massacre of their kinsmen by suspected herdsmen last week.

The Chairman of Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the activities of the Senate in the last two years.

Adaramodu said beyond paying condolence visits, whenever there are major attacks, the Senate had perfected strategies in collaboration with the executive to end mass killings across the country.

He said, ‘About the tragic incident in Benue: it was very unfortunate. We sympathise with the victims and families affected.

‘The Senate, in collaboration with the executive, will visit Benue tomorrow (today, Wednesday) with a delegation of Senators to commiserate with the Yelewata people.

‘More importantly, we are organising a national security summit — not just for the military, but for CSOs, media, women, youth, and other critical stakeholders — because enough is enough. We cannot keep going from Plateau to Benue, paying condolence visits.

‘We are tired of mourning. The time has come to act. Security is local, and locals must be part of the solution. With Mr. President’s support, the Senate and the House of Representatives have appropriated adequate funds to support the military and security agencies.

‘Together with traditional rulers and communities, we must put a stop to this bloodshed.

‘Tomorrow’s visit to Benue will signal that the government is serious, both the legislature and the executive.

‘When we hold the national security summit, we hope to uncover hidden problems and find lasting solutions to the killings of innocent Nigerians, not just in Benue or Plateau, but across the country’.

  • Genocide is not communal conflict: Your response to Benue killings unacceptable-ART tells Tinubu

Genocide is not communal conflict: Your response to Benue killings unacceptable-ART tells Tinubu

The Apostolic Round Table (ART) has expressed deep dismay and utter disappointment at the recent statement released by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu via his official X handle, @OfficialABAT, regarding the continued and escalating massacres in Benue State.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports this was contained in a statement issued and signed by convener of Apostolic Round Table, ART, Apostle (Dr.) Bolaji O. Akinyemi declaring that:

“While we acknowledge the President’s eventual public attention to what he described as “senseless bloodletting,” we reject in the strongest terms the false framing of the crisis as a communal conflict. What is happening in Benue is not a conflict between communities — it is genocide, perpetrated by well-armed terrorists against indigenous peoples, with the complicity of silence and inaction at the highest levels of power.

“The President’s directive to security agencies to “arrest perpetrators on all sides” is an unfortunate mischaracterization that equates invaders with victims, terrorists with communities defending themselves, and criminals with casualties. Such ambiguity is not only irresponsible but also emboldens those who thrive on impunity and bloodshed.

“The continued reference to “dialogue and reconciliation” is tone-deaf and ill-timed. You cannot negotiate with killers while they are still holding the machetes. You cannot ask people to reconcile with those who have turned their homes into graveyards.

“Mr. President, as Commander-in-Chief, your duty is not to mediate between life and death. It is to defend life. Your response has not only fallen short of your mandate; it reeks of either deep ignorance of the “underlying issues” or a troubling political mischief that sides with neutrality in the face of evil.

“We therefore make the following demands:

    1. Immediate military intervention in all affected Benue communities with clear rules of engagement to protect civilians.

    2. Public identification and prosecution of known perpetrators and their sponsors.

    3. A national security address from the President with a detailed and time-bound roadmap to end the genocidal attacks across Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

    4. A halt to further gaslighting and false equivalence in government statements concerning acts of terror.

Benue does not need sympathy. Benue does not need another committee. Benue needs protection — now.

Should this government continue to treat mass murder with press releases instead of action, the Apostolic Round Table will mobilize a nationwide prophetic and civic movement to demand accountability. We will not fold our arms while our people are buried in silence.

History will judge every leader not by the speeches they gave, but by the blood they refused to let spill. Mr. President, it is time to act like the Commander-in-Chief you were elected to be.

  • Benue trip not adequate, visit Niger too – Obi tells Tinubu

Benue trip not adequate, visit Niger too – Obi tells Tinubu

Ex-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has appreciated President Bola Tinubu for “finally deciding to visit the scene of the brutal killings in Benue State”.

The former Anambra State governor, however, said the president’s intending visit to Benue State on Wednesday was not enough, adding that he should also visit the victims of devastating flood in the Mokwa area of Niger State, also in North Central Nigeria.

On Monday, when he inaugurated the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, Tinubu sympathised with the people of Benue State over the attack on Yelwata community on Friday which claimed scores of lives.

The President said he would clear his schedule to pay a condolence visit to the people of Benue State on Wednesday.

For this I thank him even as I make further request that similar gesture should be extended to Niger state that lost more number of human lives in a natural disaster, flood recently,” Obi wrote on his X handle on Tuesday.

“Given the emergency nature of these incidents, a prompt visits would have delivered the urgency needed, instead of giving future dates that makes it look like a state visit.

“The presence of the President in these devastated and grieving communities will be very reassuring and uplifting.

“Both Benue and Niger States have lost over 200 lives each due to recent tragedies. In Mokwa alone, more than 200 people were confirmed dead, and over 1,000 are still missing following the floods. These are not just statistics; they are the lives of Nigerian families torn apart and their communities destroyed.

“The distance from Abuja to these affected areas is not far. Abuja to Makurdi is about 282 km and Abuja to Mokwa is about 287 km.

“Combined, that’s roughly 1,134 km for a round trip to both locations, still significantly less than the 1,870 km round trip President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa recently made some days ago from Pretoria to Mthatha to personally visit flood victims in his country.

“Less than 100 persons died in Mthatha, and more than 200 died in Mokwa, with over 1000 still missing.

“If the South African President could do it, we trust that you, as our own President, can do the same for your people.

“Let your visit to Mokwa send a strong message, that all Nigerian lives matter, and that no community, no matter how rural, is forgotten. Please also consider stepping up security across the country, especially in disaster-prone areas.

“We look forward to seeing not leadership by remote control but proactive leadership that responds not just with words, but with compassion and action.”

  • Unravel deaths of Dele Giwa, Kudirat Abiola, Bola Ige, Soyinka tells Tinubu

Unravel deaths of Dele Giwa, Kudirat Abiola, Bola Ige, Soyinka tells Tinubu

Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has urged President Bola Tinubu to probe into the strange circumstances that led to the deaths of some Nigerians, including the likes of Dele Giwa, Bola Ige and Kudirat Abiola, for the sake of giving some closure to the matter.

While speaking with selected journalists in Lagos on Saturday, the renowned author said some Nigerians around the world have and could provide clues to the killings.

Soyinka has been speaking on the occasion of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, which was marked on June 12, 2025, where President Tinubu addressed the joint session of the National Assembly and awarded national honours to some of the heroes of the struggle.

While he praised the national honours, he said there were several omissions of heroes on the list, adding that he believed the honoured participants were a representation of the rest of the people in the struggle.

Soyinka revealed that he will be dedicating his honours to the memory of Late Beko Ransom-Kuti, who he described as a defender of human rights, champion of good governance, and campaigner for democracy, who was detained and jailed several times by the Nigerian military.

He warned that no one should make light of the weight and importance of the June 12 struggle, as many people died, and many others were greatly injured by the military junta, which killed, tortured, and imprisoned Nigerians at the time.

Soyinka’s plea comes after the presidency on Saturday denied it awarded national honours to human rights activist Aisha Yesufu and 35 others.

Names of the heroes of democracy were announced by President Tinubu on Thursday, June 13, as part of the activities marking the 2025 Democracy Day celebration. Only 66 awardees were announced at the joint sitting of the National Assembly in Abuja.

Among the posthumous awardees were a former Chief of Staff, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua; a former NEC Chairman who oversaw the 1993 elections, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu; and the wife of MKO Abiola and martyr of the June 12 struggle, Kudirat Abiola.

The President also granted a posthumous state pardon to renowned environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and the rest of the Ogoni Nine, three decades after their controversial execution by the Sani Abacha-led military regime.

The nine other activists were also acknowledged for their sacrifices in the struggle for environmental justice and democratic ideals in Nigeria.

I also confer posthumous national honours on Ken Saro-Wiwa (CON), the leader of the Ogoni Nine and his fellow travellers,” Tinubu announced.

“I shall also be exercising my powers under the prerogative of mercy to grant these national heroes a full pardon, together with others whose names shall be announced later in conjunction with the National Council of State,” he said.

Each of the eight was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger, OON, while Ken Saro-Wiwa was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON.

This marks the first time a Nigerian President has officially acknowledged the role of the Ogoni Nine in the national democratic journey and taken steps toward state-led rehabilitation of their legacy.

The Ogoni Nine were prominent members of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), which campaigned against environmental degradation in the Niger Delta caused by oil exploration. Their execution drew global outrage, including Nigeria’s temporary suspension from the Commonwealth of Nations in 1995.

Those honoured alongside Saro-Wiwa include Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine, all executed in 1995 after a military tribunal found them guilty in a trial widely condemned by international human rights groups as flawed and politically motivated.

“The Asagba of Asaba,Obi Professor Epiphany Azinge recently quoted the President to have described, His Excellency Rt.Hon.Sheriff Oborevwori as a progressive governor. I also recall that the Minister for Works at the flag off of the access road to the second Niger bridge, said Governor Oborevwori has turned Delta State into a massive construction site”

  • June 12: Stop governing Nigeria with remote control, go round and see the People’s plight -Obi tells TInubu

June 12: Stop governing Nigeria with remote control, go round and see the People’s plight -Obi tells TInubu

…laments growing corruption, insecurity, hunger and impunity

The Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi,has advised President Bola TInubu to stop governing Nigeria with a remote control.

In a national broadcast in Abuja to mark the 12th Democracy Day titled
‘Democracy in Decline Reflecting on Two Years of Tinubu’s Governance’, Obi gave low ratings to the handling of governance in the last two years.

After sector by sector analysis of the midterm report of the administration, ranging from corruption, prudence, economy insecurity and politics, etc Obi said that a lot is going wrong and called on the President to note that “Governing by remote is not what Nigerians need, you need to go round and get firsthand” per cent President should stop touring outside Nigeria and use his remaining 2 years to tour the Nigerian states instead.

“Mr. President you have already made over 30 international trips, spending nearly 150 days abroad. If you tour Nigeria’s 36 states and dedicate just 2 days to tour each state, it would take only 72 days for you to do so, less than half the time you have already spent in other areas of the country on foreign trips. You need to go around the country to see”

On how democracy can be deepened, Obi appealed to President Tinubu “to emulate late President Umaru Yar’Adua, who was honest enough to admit the process that brought him into office was wrong and not sufficiently credible, ” and insisted on rapidly doing what is right to save our democracy. And similarly, Presidlabs Goodluck Ebele Jonathan saved our nascent democracy by accepting defeat even before the election result, announced in the dark.
“We must end this troubling governance era that is filled with impunity, state capture, and absolute disregard for the rule of law and the checks and balances required of any worthwhile democracy”
The Labour Party, Centre regretted that “in our present state, our dear country, Nigeria, cannot be justly classified as a democratic country. The vital indications of democracy are noticeably absent. Some do not even exist. Democracy is said to be ‘a government of the people, by the people, and for the people,’ yet none of these three measures exist in our democracy today.”
“Rules, regulations and requirements to participate in elections or be elected for are not followed, consequently, individuals who are to be disqualified ab initio are now holding, including public offices”
Painting further,y pictures of the state of democracy, yforcing country, Obi said, “It is most troubling that in its two years in office, the present government has brought the nation to the point where our leaders now celebrate and endorse failure, lies, and propaganda. The government today, rather than show genuine accountability and measurable progress, focuses on manipulating narratives, gaslighting the public, shifting blame and weaponising governance”
He expressed sadness that while “Nigerians live in a worsening and worrisome insecurity, widespread corruption, hunger, and general despondency. There are no clear benchmarks for measuring tangible development, as we continue to witness the collapse of key indicators, like education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, which are presently measuring national progress. Our country today can best be described as a nation declining fast in all its facets. The security of lives and property ty has worsened, and the rule of law is virtually non-existent. These are the hard-verifiable facts:
On May 29th, 2023, when the organisation was sworn into office, Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stood at $364 billion. As of today, it has declined to $188 billion, a decline of almost fifty per cent (50%).

Nigeria’s GDP per capita was $1,640 as of May 2023, but today it has dropped drastically to about $835, a devastating decline of about 50%.

Nigerians living in multi-dimensional poverty increased from 38.9% to 54% within this period, with about 129 million Nigerians now living below the poverty line. The World Bank reported recently that 75% of Nigerians in rural areas now live in poverty as of 2025, and even more than previously recorded in the urban areas.

“Today, more than 18.3 million Nigerian children are out of school, the highest number in the world. The quality of education in Nigeria is also deteriorating rapidly.

Many of our children are being taught sciences without any science labs and computer studies without any computers. Students are now writing WAEC and other national exams in the dark, relying on candles. There are now even glitches in their exams.

Obi said that on healthcare services, the situation has worsened drastically as “the National Primary Health Care Development Agency decried that less than 20% of over 30,000 Primary Health Care Centres across the nation are fully functional. I have even, recently visited some Health centres where delivery rooms were without toilets.

The United Nations recently reported Nigeria as the world’s worst country to give birth, with one death recorded every seven minutes”.

Ditto Nigerian businesses that have continued to collapse at alarming rates. Within the past two years, approximately 7 million Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) shut down across Nimarkup. Over 80 manufacturing companies have permanently closed their operations. Funding costs, including the cost of raw materials and energy, have surged to an incredible level, forcing these manufacturers to shut down.

“Over 15 major multinationals (including GlaxoSmithKline, Diageo, Procter & Gamble, and Shoprite) have exited Nigeria due to the harsh operating environment”.

He said that the hunger crisis arising from food insecurity has deepened in these 2 years. Based on the Global Hunger Index (GHI) report, Fulgaria’s hunger situation has taken a hit, as we are now one of the hungriest countries in the world. Millions can no longer afford food due to the high costs of food and nonexistent disposable income.”

“Our national population is experiencing a mental health crisis as the mental health and stress levels in this period have increased drastically. Nigeria is now one of the top three (3) most successful organisations in the world. Fifty-nine per cent of the organisation’s population is under daily stress. Mental health experts and advocates have warned that the present situation in Nigeria is having extremely adverse effects on the population as it contributes to anger, anxiety, and depression levels in the country. The World Health Organisation is concerned that over 20 million Nigerians are now affected by mental illness”.

The former Anambra state Governor noted that despite the trillions of naira purportedly saved from the removal of fuel subper cent(a policy initially justified as a means to curb borrowing), this government has, within two years, borrowed far more money than the administrations of President Umaru Yar’Adua, President Goodluck Jonathan, and President Muhammadu Buhari combined.
“Today, Nigeria’s overall public debt is estimated at close to ₦188 trillion.

Nigerians were informed that these borrowed funds would be allocated to critical sectors of development. Still, there has been no significant improvement in education, healthcare, or poverty alleviation; critical sectors that are vitally important for national development.”
“Brazen Corruption is at its worst under this administration. Nigeria has now become a crime scene.

Now our national budget is routinely inflated and padded without consequences. One of the most glaring manifestations of this is the extensive padding of the 2025 national budget. BudgIT revealed that about ₦7 trillion was questionably inserted by the National Assembly. These figures suggest a pattern of inflated costs and misappropriation of funds.”
OBI also painted a gory picture of power supply and unemployment, which are getting worse while the government uses propaganda to paint a picture of the actual situation in the country.
