Tinubu’s minister, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim booed out of ministry (Here’s why)

A video showing the moment the minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim was being booed by her staff while driving off the office premises has surfaced on social media.

Speaking to newsmen, some staff members expressed their grievances, claiming that since Sulaiman-Ibrahim assumed office, they have had no working tools.

One female staff, Anne Ojugbele, said, “We don’t have working tools at all. Even a piece of paper to write with, we don’t have. And most of the time you do official assignment with your personal money. She told us that she is not accountable to us that she is accountable to Mr President, that we should go and meet the permanent secretary for anything we need.”

Another staff, identified as Alake Success, also voiced frustration, “This woman refused to meet with the staff. We have taken all necessary step; a year endurance. The beauty of Democracy is to have access to your leader. This woman thinks that she is more special than us. Every Nigerian on the street is a potential president. She came with legions of SAs. She has more than 25 SAs.

What we want, if possible, she should be posted to another ministry.”

Recall, Sulaiman-Ibrahim was appointed Minister of Women Affairs in October 2024, following the removal of Barrister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye.

Senate invites Tinubu’s minister, Bagudu over low budgetary allocation to Creative Economy ministry

The Senate, on Thursday invited the Minister of Budget and Economy Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu over the budgetary allocations to the Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy.

It ordered Bagudu to appear before it on Friday 24th January, 2025 by 10am.

The Senate committee on Art, Culture and Creative Economy issued the invitation when the Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa appeared before it to defend the ministry’s 2025 budget proposal.

Irked by the low budgetary allocations of N4bn for a ministry with the potential to rake in billions of naira into the nation’s coffer, a resolution to invite the Minister of Budget and Economy Planning was reached.

Senator Osita Izunaso moved the motion to invite Bagudu, saying it’s appalling for only four billion naira to be allocated to the nation’s creative economy ministry.

Senator Izunaso stressed that a ministry with the second largest entertainment industry in the world must be given support and proper funding for it to contribute immensely to the nation’s revenue.

Seconding the motion, Senator Aniekan Etim Bassey questioned why the budget of the Ministry was six billion naira in 2024, but four billion naira in 2025 even when the ministry is now two ministries put together?

Musa Musawa had earlier told the committee that the ministry is looking forward to contributing over 100 billion naira to the nation’s coffer by 2030. But she noted that this can only be achieved if the right infrastructures are put in place for art, culture and entertainment to thrive in the country.

    The motion received an overwhelming support from the lawmakers as the chairman of the committee, Senator Mohammed Onawo Ogoshi, declared;

“A motion has been moved and seconded, therefore this Senate committee hereby invite the Minister of Budget and Economy Planning for further interaction on the budget of the Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, on Friday 24th January, 2025 by 10:00 am”.

  • Tinubu’s minister defends data tariff hike, despite increasing threats

Tinubu’s minister defends data tariff hike, despite increasing threats

The Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani has defended the tariff hike by telecommunication operators in the country, blaming inflation and rising costs for the increase.

TheNewsGuru reports that the minister during his appearance before the House of Representatives Committee on Telecom and Digital Economy on Tuesday outlined the role of the government when firms soughted a 100 tariff increase on calls and data.

While defending the Ministry’s budgetary proposal for the 2025 fiscal year, Tijani said the tariff increase aligns with broader economic trends.

The Minister however clarified that tariffs act as a sales tax, causing a one-off price hike rather than sustained inflation.

He revealed that the federal government plans to invest N6 billion to deploy 90,000km of fibre optic cables that will increase the country’s capacity from 35,000km to 125,000km.

Tijani said apart from South Africa, Egypt and Tunisia, many African countries face significant deficits in fibre optic infrastructure.

“This is going to become a big business. We want Nigerian companies not only to lay cables within Nigeria but also to provide these services to neighbouring countries.

“We also want our people to become the employees who will execute this work. For instance, South Africa has leveraged its global businesses to achieve economic security. Nigeria must focus on similar opportunities to build a robust telecommunications infrastructure that guarantees national security,” the minsuter added.

He noted that historically, investments in telecommunications infrastructure was hitherto left to private companies, which Prioritise only areas where they can make profits.

“These companies rely on night-time satellite data to identify areas with active economic activities—indicated by the presence of lights—and invest only in those areas,” Tijani said.

He urged adequate funding of the ministry, saying it lacked the necessary resources to discharge its responsibilities effectively.

“The ministry is underfunded. Unlike the NCC, we do not have sufficient funds to track all users of telecom services or ensure timely payments. We also lack the appropriate software to perform these functions efficiently. If adequately resourced, the ministry could generate significantly more revenue,” he said.

    The increase is unjustifiable, unlawful

Meanwhile the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on Tuesday demanded the reversal of the recent 50% hike in telecom tariffs, issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu.

The organisationn described the increase as “unlawful” and warned of impending legal action if the government and telecom operators fail to reverse the decision.

“The Tinubu administration and telcos must immediately reverse the unlawful increase in calls and data costs. We’ll see in court if the 50% tariff hike is not reversed within 48 hours,” the group declared.

SERAP’s ultimatum comes shortly after the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) decided to sue the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

According President of NATCOMS, Deolu Ogunbanjo, said the NCC did not consult subscribers on the matter. He kicked against the 50 per cent hike, adding that a five per cent to ten per cent marginal increase was a better option.

He said, “This will affect everyone from the biggest industry to the smallest company, such as the Point of Service (POS) operators.

“We now depend on telecoms for our meetings, for the banks, everybody depends on it, even the education sector. Yes, a lot of things depend on it.

“So, that is why we painfully agreed that look, a moderate or marginal five per cent to 10 per cent increase will be fine

“You know, we do not mind an increase if it is to salvage the industry that is helping us, which means so much to us. This is also contributing double-digits to Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP).

“So, we appreciate that. It’s painful, but we agreed. We said, Okay, we will not mind if it is just a five per cent to 10 per cent increase.”

I would have been sacked – Tinubu’s minister reveals whose backing is keeping her in office

Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, minister of women’s affairs on Tuesday claimed she has the approval and support of President Bola Tinubu for her actions in office.

The minister, while speaking at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN Headquarters in New York, United States, said her actions are backed by the determination to ensure things work for Nigerians in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s administration.

She also expressed her resolve to continue challenging and changing the narratives.

“If I didn’t have the support of Mr President, who born you? I would have been sacked by now. That’s what normally Presidents do.

“But I’ve been taking giant steps, challenging issues that are not right to me concerning my job, and nothing has happened to me so I came here actually for change of plans. I am going to fight it until I achieve it.

“As I speak with you, I’ve done it with UNICEF, UN women is coming, I will make it so difficult for anyone to work in our country with the kind of way they’ve been working before now.

“Things must have to change, the narrative must change so I came here specifically on this because I was here last year and went home with nothing. Most countries that come her they go home with nothing as far as I am concerned.

“If anybody has achieved anything, they should let me know, So we have to start achieving something. How do we start achieving something? By changing the action plan so that the former action plan they were using which was fetching us nothing would be changed to focus on who we are and what we can benefit from, what can impact our people and change the narratives for them so that the poor will start breathing which is basically the President’s renewed hope agenda,” She said in an interview with Arise TV

  • Group drags Tinubu’s Minister to court over alleged N2bn financial infractions

Group drags Tinubu’s Minister to court over alleged N2bn financial infractions

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Ken Ohanenye, is again in the eyes of the storm as she was accused of allegedly siphoning N2billion meant for the empowerment of the women in the country.

A group, identified as Concerned Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has dragged Ohanenye and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to an Enugu High Court, seeking an order of the court compelling the minister to account for the whooping N2billion.

The plaintiffs in the case- Ambassador Onyinye Joy Mamah, suing for herself and on behalf of Heroine Women Foundation and Other Affected Nigerian Women and Amaka-Ajuzie Ogbu, for herself and on behalf of Net Bridge Empowerment Foundation, are asking Ohanenye to also account for $100M intervention funds granted to the ministry by the World Bank in aid of distressed Nigerian women.

The petitioners on behalf of themselves and Nigerian women expressed disappointment at the minister for siphoning intervention funds meant for the emancipation of the Nigerian women.

The petitioners said various actions of the Women Affairs ministry by Ohanenye raised serious questions about the management of funds meant for vulnerable Nigerian women and and children.

They described the minister’s application of the various intervention funds available to the ministry as not only flawed but exploitative.

They demanded that Ohanenye provide a full and transparent account of how N2billion was utilised.

Similarly, they requested the anti-graft agency to investigate and hold Ohanenye accountable for the misuse of public funds under her custody.

The petitioners said, “Over the years, the minister has diverted an estimated N2billion from various critical projects within her ministry under the guise of empowerment into questionable initiatives. The minister allegedly appoints the contractors for these initiatives, raising further concerns about transparency and accountability.”

“We highlight the following examples of these so called empowerment projects: Purchase of Keke tricycles: The minister has proudly touted the purchase of just seven tricycles for women, from she now demands daily payments.”

“Purchase of Iron dubbed Steaming Machines and scissors dubbed cutting machines at exorbitant rates of N680,000 per iron and N160,000 naira per scissors.”

“Faceless Benefiaries: A significant number of beneficiaries of these initiatives remain unidentified, leading us to question whether these individuals even exist or if the funds have been misappropriated.”

“Furthermore, we are in possession of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the minister with organizers of an event which she recently disrupted claiming ignorance of the event.”

“The organisers alleged that the minister reneged on the alleged revenue sharing formula few days to the event after they have had committed substantial funds to the event. They were then threatened with disruption unless they complied with her new terms. This type of extortionate behavior is unacceptable and undermines the credibility of the ministry.”

“We demand that the Minister of Women Affairs provide a full and transparent account of how the N2billion was utilised. It’s imperative that the funds allocated for the empowerment of women are used for their purpose and not as a tool for personal enrichment.”

“We call on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the minister’s activities and hold her accountable for any misuse of public funds. The time has come to put an end to the exploitation of women and children under the guise of empowerment.”

Meanwhile, in the affidavit sworn to by Mamah and Ogbu, at Enugu High Court, they deposed that, “Not long ago during the regime of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a loan facility amounting to N100billion had been made available to this country by World Bank for use to better the lives of women.”

“The fund was wholly dissipated and none had gotten to the end users, i.e. the impoverished women of Nigeria, all that they heard was that the whole of N100M had been spent on consultancies, seminars and such other inanities.”

  • I will disgrace you people – Tinubu’s minister fumes, disrupts Abuja event (video)

I will disgrace you people – Tinubu’s minister fumes, disrupts Abuja event (video)

Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, minister of women’s affairs on Friday disrupted an Abuja based event organized for the Ministry without her consent.

In the video making rounds on social media, Kennedy-Ohaneye could be seen lamenting, as she threatens to disgrace the organizers if the situation repeats itself.

The controversial minister explained that she is not against organizing workshops and seminars however, the lack of women empowerment programs when organizing such an event is unacceptable.

According to the minister, a huge amount of money should not be spent on organising seminars while people are hungry.

She stressed that she’s unperturbed if people resort to name-calling, but she would ensure that she changes the narrative.

She said,  Let this be the last time Women Affairs will organize anything that I am not aware of. You try next time, I will come here and get you people disgraced. I know what I am going through in this country. For a while, this is what we keep on organizing. Few weeks ago, there was hunger protest and they talked about peace and security.

“Women are not empowered. Children are suffering. Nigerians are suffering but we waste money all the time in frivolous things that don’t make sense. I am sorry. Many people may misunderstand me but I am ready to be misunderstood. I am ready to be tortured. I am ready. I have changed the narrative, I said no programme without empowerment.

“You are talking about peace and security. With poverty, how can you solve it? You keep talking, doing workshops. With poverty, where are we heading to? How do we solve that poverty? By directing money to the wrong channels that don’t make impact on humans? On those people you want them to change and give you peace?

“I have changed the narrative. I said do not do any programme without empowerment. They give monies in the Ministries and it is used for travel, programmes. Nothing that will impact the nation. If you hear the monies the government gives out to ministries, you will be shocked. Why should it continue like that? Why should we fold our hands and these things will continue? Who do you think will save you? It’s you that will save yourself. Let them call me names, troublemaker’, ‘mad woman’, I am ready to take it.’’

  • SCREENING! I fainted due to exhaustion, Tinubu’s minister confesses

SCREENING! I fainted due to exhaustion, Tinubu’s minister confesses

The minister from Kaduna state, Abbas Balarabe, has given reasons why he fainted during his screening before the Senate on Wednesday.

The minister explained that he had suffered from exhaustion while preparing for his screening for a ministerial role.

The minister after he was resuscitated explained that he got the news of his nomination on Tuesday and had stayed up all night preparing for his ‘big day’.

Balarabe said, “It is basically exhaustion. I got the news of my nomination yesterday and I had to come from Kaduna.

There were so many things to do which I attended to throughout the night.

“What happened today is as a result of pure exhaustion.”

“I want to thank the Senate for their understanding particularly the senators from my State ( Kaduna) who have all gathered around me since yesterday and the medical team who took care of me.”

“I am alright now, nothing is wrong with me. What I experienced was pure exhaustion which can happen to anybody,” he expressed.

Earlier in the Senate, chaos erupted when the nominee who replaced former Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai suddenly collapsed during his screening on Wednesday.

Balarabe, the second nominee to face screening after Dr. Ibrahim, had just concluded recounting his experiences when the incident unfolded, approximately 15 minutes into the Senate plenary.

While Kaduna South Senator, Sunday Katung, was discussing Balarabe’s administrative background in Kaduna, the nominee unexpectedly slumped while still at the podium.

Following the presentation of his profile to the senators, Balarabe received an endorsement from the Kaduna lawmaker, affirming that all three senators from the state, supported his nomination.

Senator Katung’s remarks were cut short when Senate President Godswill Akpabio urgently called out, “Bring water and sugar. Call Dr. Musa.”

Akpabio then directed journalists and cameramen to cease filming and exit the Senate chamber.

The nominee was subsequently taken to the National Assembly clinic.

After a break of about 45 minutes, the Senate reconvened and proceeded to confirm all three nominees.
