Paying tithe should not be forced – Clergy

Mr Sampson Amoateng, the General Overseer, House of Miracles Ministries, has advised churches to follow scriptural practice of making tithe payment a freewill and not by force.

Amoateng, who made the call in a statement on Wednesday, explained that tithing was a biblical practice of giving a portion of one’s income to support religious institutions and the community.

According to him, tithe and offering is a scriptural practice that is meant to be freewill and not by force.

“The concept of tithe is rooted in the biblical teachings of the Old and New Testaments, as recorded in Deut. 14, Matt. 6 and Malachi 3:10.

“I am against pastors or churches forcing people to document their tithe cards, saying, ‘my money is mine.

“It is carnal to document tithe cards. Tithing is a spiritual discipline that requires faith, trust, and obedience,” he said.

Amoateng said tithing demonstrates our gratitude for God’s blessings and provision, and also express our trust in His ability to provide for our needs.

“Tithing has practical advantages; it helps to support the church and ministries, enabling the spread of the gospel and the care of the poor and needy,’’ he said.

Amoateng said that tithing fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility among believers, as they work together to support the work of the church.

He said that in recent times, people who do not go to church give money to people in need as their way of tithing, adding that, this was the way to go and not forced.

“Tithe is a vital aspect of religious practice that demonstrates our gratitude, obedience, and trust in God.

”It is a spiritual discipline that requires faith and commitment, but yields rich rewards in terms of spiritual growth and financial responsibility.

”As we consider our relationship with God and our role in supporting the church, may we embrace the practice of tithe with joy and generosity,” he said.

He said doing so, people would not only honor God but also contribute to the building of His kingdom on earth.

Amoateng who based in Accra, Ghana urged people to be committed to God’s work and abide by His teachings.

  • Why people face hardship every January – Pastor Ibiyeomie

Why people face hardship every January – Pastor Ibiyeomie

Pastor David Ibiyeomie of Salvation Ministries has said the inability of people to invest in the kingdom of God is the reason they are faced with hardship every January.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) report Pastor Ibiyeomie said this in a recent sermon in his church, where he attributed January hardship to inability to invest in the kingdom of God via payment of tithes and offerings during the yuletide.

While giving a sermon in his church on Sunday, the cleric said some members are distracted by material things during the Christmas season and forget to perform their financial obligations in the church.

According to him, when they spend all their incomes in the season, some resort to binding their landlords due to their inability to renew their rent, stressing that such prayers are not biblical.

“January is always the longest month for many people, because if they pay you before Christmas and they give you Christmas bonus and then before the new year you have spent everything, without even investing in the Kingdom, most of you will not pay Tithe, you feel this time no way, I have shoes to buy, I have hair to buy, I have clothes to buy.

“No problem while you’re buying them also remember that by January, landlord will give you bill, the children will give you school fees, you can’t bind your landlord, even if you bind him, I lose him.

“It is unscriptural to bind your landlord when he built his own house for goodness’ sake, why are you binding a man, do you think he built the house for you to live for free, those are not scriptural prayers, it is against the scripture, pay your rent.

“Don’t speak in tongues and say have stroke, why will the man have stroke, why will your landlord have stroke, what did he do to you that you want him to have stroke and then you say he is not born again? That’s why you now start quoting scripture that has no meaning,” Ibiyeomie said.

  • Why I don’t pay 10 percent as tithe – Pastor David Ibiyeomie

Why I don’t pay 10 percent as tithe – Pastor David Ibiyeomie

Pastor David Ibiyeomie, founder/presiding pastor of Salvation Ministries has revealed he does not pay 10 per cent as tithe as instructed by the Holy Bible.

Pastor Ibiyeomie, who spoke while addressing his members on Sunday at the church’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, stressed God would flog him if he pays 10 per cent as tithe.

Ibiyeomie described the refusal to pay tithe as a form of greed, adding that those who don’t tithe find life very tight for them.

“In fact, these days, I don’t even pay ten, my P.A. is there. I pay far beyond ten, for every money I get. That is what you are struggling to pay as tithe, me I pay more than ten percent as offering.

“My tithe is not fifteen percent, I won’t tell you the percentage, I’m on another level. I won’t tell you what I pay as tithe. If I pay ten percent, God will flog me.

“Me, pay tithe of ten percent for what? You pay ten percent, that’s the recommended one, but me, I’m at another level,” the Cleric said.

  • The new tithing scam from thief and robber pastors – By Femi Aribisala

The new tithing scam from thief and robber pastors – By Femi Aribisala

“Even the truth can become deceitful if used deceitfully”.

I wrote in 2013 that: “every Pastor who collects tithes is a thief and a robber.” I was roundly excoriated by the thieves and robbers. But it has been a losing battle for them.

Jesus says: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32). The psalmist says to God: “The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” (Psalm 119:130).

As more and more light has been shed by the light of the world, more and more Christians have been released from the captivity of pastors operating from dens of thieves. A few years ago, Daddy Freeze re-opened this issue in Nigeria, and the pastors were again up in arms.

    Desperation

The president of the PFN said those who do not pay tithes would soon die. No such things happened. Another false prophet among them even prophesied that Daddy Freeze himself would soon die. But the blessed man is alive and well.

But things have gone from bad to worse for tithe-collectors. One of them, a highly respected “Man of God” in Nigeria made a statement so outrageous and unscriptural that it must only have been borne out of desperation.

He charged all the pastors under him to tell the members of their congregation that those who do not pay tithes will not go to heaven.

This MOG forgot that heaven is not his to give. There is no guarantee that he himself will go there. So, how can he arrogate to himself the right to prevent others from getting there?

Jesus said: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.” (Matthew 23:13).

The MOG’s desperation reminds me of a story I heard about another pastor who says it is a sin for women to wear trousers. One day, he was praying for some people to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit when a particular lady he prayed for immediately received the gift of speaking in tongues.

Then, he noticed that she was wearing trousers.

He called her back in annoyance, before remembering that he was not the giver of the gift. The Giver did not seem to mind her trousers.

    Bankrupt

It was only a matter of time before the tithing scam in the churches was exposed. People have been paying tithes for years but have yet to receive physically the blessing of Malachi 3:10 that there shall not be room enough to contain. They have been paying tithes, but only the pastors have been getting richer.

It is not as if the promise of Malachi is of no effect. The windows of heaven were opened by Jesus Christ. He is the one who secured for us the blessing that no room can contain.

But the mysteries of the kingdom of God have not been revealed to pastors because hearing they hear but do not understand. (Matthew 13:13).

Because of their covetousness, they failed to realise that the robbers of God that Malachi railed against were not the Israelites, but the priests. They were the ones who were cornering ALL the tithes, neglecting the orphans, the widows, and the poor:

“‘And now, O priests, this commandment is for you. If you will not hear, and if you will not take it to heart, to give glory to My name,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have cursed them already, because you do not take it to heart.’” (Malachi 2:1-2).

So, they said those who do not pay tithes would be cursed. But God would never curse Israel for God would never curse those he has already blessed. Moreover, the scriptures affirm that New Testament believers are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3).

    Creflo Dollar

The tithing scam is not working so, one by one, the scammers are singing a new song. The latest convert to a new anthem is Creflo Dollar. Creflo was so committed to tithing that he once said that if he had the druthers, those who refuse to pay tithes would be lined up and shot. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLsDNxZcOa8).

Now Creflo says: “The teaching that I have shared in the past on the subject of tithing was not correct… I could never understand it clearly because I had not yet been confronted with the gospel of grace… I have no shame at all in saying to you, throw away every book, tape, and video I ever did on the subject of tithing.”

But the gospel of grace is not a new addition to the bible. It was always there. Paul says: “You are not under law but under grace.” (Romans 6:14).

Creflo and others cherry-picked the law and decided that tithing was applicable under grace because it was convenient to use the law to browbeat Christians into providing the funding to build their religious empires.

Should we now believe that they have seen the light when it is no longer convenient for them to peddle the lies of the past? I do not think so.

    New scam

It is human to be mistaken and then see the error of our ways. But the mistakes become cynical when they are to our profit. The corrections also become suspect when we offer no apologies for past errors, but now promote new self-serving principles.

Creflo now says perhaps the reason why tithers were not blessed according to the Malachi promise was that they tithed under the law. Now, they should give under grace and be blessed.

Moreover, he now points out that the biblical tithe was more than ten percent. Those who are no longer constrained by the tithing principle can easily give far more than ten percent. The new question is: “how much do you love God?” Give lavishly to show your love for Him.

“He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7).

Of course, this is true. It has always been true. It was true all the time that pastors were threatening non-tithers with the devourer and with the denial of heavenly blessings.  But even the truth can become deceitful if used deceitfully.

So, give. Give lavishly. Give willingly and cheerfully. But do not give to Creflo and his like. Do not give to pastors, especially tithing pastors. Do not give to the so-called church, which is really not the church. Give to widows, orphans, and the poor. Give to the Lazarus at your gate.

They are looking for more money for their empire-building. They need more money to cater to inflation. The cost of aviation fuel had quadrupled, so they need more money to fly their planes. Do not let millionaire mega pastors use new tricks to rob you of your hard-earned money.

“He who gives to the rich will surely come to poverty.” (Proverbs 22:16).

  • VIDEO: American preacher, Creflo Dollar disowns previous teachings on tithing

American preacher, Pastor Creflo Dollar, who is the founder and senior pastor of World Changers Church International (WCCI) and World Changers Church-New York, has disowned all his previous teachings on tithe and giving.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Pastor Dollar disowned the previous teachings, declaring that tithing is not biblical, while also apologizing to his congregation for the previous teachings that encouraged tithing.

The clergyman who has been an advocate for tithing for many years, during a recent sermon in his church, the video of which is attached, admitted that all his previous teachings on tithing and giving were wrong.

He owned up that he is still growing and urged his congregation to do away with his previous books, tapes, and videos on tithing. He stated that he has seen the truth now, and is not ashamed to contradict his previous messages.

Creflo, who stressed that tithing is Old Testament teaching and no longer relevant for New Testament believers, cited Romans 6: 14 to buttress how Christians now live under grace and not the laws of the Old Testament.

“I want to start off by saying to you that I’m still growing and that the teachings that I’ve shared with you on the subject of tithing were not correct. And today I stand in humility to correct some things that I’ve taught for years and believed for years, but could never understand it clearly because I’d not yet been confronted with the gospel of grace, which has made the difference.

“I want to apologize because if it wasn’t for me going down that route, I wouldn’t have ended up where I am right now. But I will say that I have no shame at all by saying to you to throw away every book, every tape and every video I’ve made on the subject of tithing.

“Why is this important, because religion is sustained by two factors; fear and guilt. And if there’s one subject that the church has used for a very long time to keep people in fear and guilt, it’s in that subject of tithing. And it has to be corrected now. I may lose some friends, preachers may not invite me no more but I think I already been through that so it doesn’t matter,” Pastor Dollar said.

  • Tithing is not compulsory but works – Uti Nwachukwu

Tithing is not compulsory but works – Uti Nwachukwu

Actor Uti Nwachukwu has shared his thoughts on the never-ending debate on Tithing.

Tithing is a principle in the Christian faith where a believer is expected to part with 10% of their income in return for blessings from God. The tithe is expected to be given to a church he or she attends. While some Christians and pastors have said this is compulsory, others have insisted that it is not.

In a thread shared on his Twitter handle, Uti opined that tithing does work but that it is not compulsory and no one will be punished for not participating in it.

‘A lot of people get this whole tithing thing wrong! Does it work? YES! BUT It is not compulsory! And you will not be punished for not practicing it! It is an ELECTIVE! A Covenant blessing available for those INTERESTED. What is wrong is using fear of punishment to threaten ur congregation into practicing it! Its like the govt waking up today to tell us that you’d be arrested if you don’t invest in real estate Same goes for First fruits, offerings and all types of giving’.

‘Let people know the advantages But do not lie to them that they sin if they dont practice it. Love and faith are all that matter in Our chosen religion’.

‘Your faith will always produce results. Which is why some people doing the unimaginable still produce results. When you give/sow into what ever covenant you want to,have faith in your actions and believe it’ll be multiplied back to you!! And just like the woman with the blood issue, your faith will reward you. BUT IT IS NOT BY FORCE! GIVE WITH A CLEAR MIND. NOT COS U ARE AFRAID OF PUNISHMENT OR POVERTY. Mind you!, this has Nothing to do with Salvation o! Be guided!’

‘You cannot buy your spot in heaven! Jesus NEVER Preached the doctrine of prosperity. As a matter of fact, the only time Jesus mentioned wealth was to let us know that it’ll be easier for a camel to pass thru the eye of a needle than a rich man to see heaven.’

Pastor Kumuyi vows to return tithes, offerings of sinful members

Pastor Williams Kumuyi, the founder of the Deeper Christian Life Bible Ministry, has disclosed why he would return the tithes and offering of some members of his church.

Kumuyi said he would return the tithes and offerings of any of his member who is still living in sin.

He stated this while addressing his members at the church’s headquarters in Lago, on the topic of holiness.

Kumuyi stressed that sinners who have refused to repent but support the church with their money are wasting their resources.

Deeper Life Pastor, Kumuyi warns against calls for Nigeria’s breakup

Stressing on the importance of living a holy life, Kumuyi said God does not need a “sinner’s money.”

He maintained that it is pointless for a sinner to pay tithes and offerings in church.

“If you are a sinner here, God does not need your money. All the money you are giving in this church does not get to God. You are just wasting your money.

“As a matter of fact if I know the numbers of sinners here and how much they gave as tithes and offering I will remove it and give it back to them. God does not need it and the church does not need it,” Kumuyi said.

  • Those who fail to pay their tithes are cursed – Bishop Oyedepo

Those who fail to pay their tithes are cursed – Bishop Oyedepo

Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo, says people who do not give a tenth of their income to the church are under a financial curse.

“Tithing is an inescapable covenant obligation. Prosperity not just wealth is impossible without tithing because when you are not paying tithe, you’re under a financial curse.” Oyedepo tweeted on Thursday.

In a subsequent tweet on Friday, Oyedepo, said many problems men face could be traced to their financial dealings.

“The way you handle your financial dealings determines greatly what happens to you financially. Many things that afflict men are traceable to their monetary dealings. False financial dealings can open doors to inexplicable afflictions,” he said.

While Oyedepo’s message was well received by many of his followers, some critics on social media described his message as archaic and improper.

Among one of the very popular critics of the Oyedepo message on tithing is, Ifedayo Olarinde aka Daddy Freeze, who opined on social media that Oyedepo’s message was wrong.

He wrote on Instagram, “Utter nonsense! Are you one percent as prosperous or as wealthy as Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet who don’t tithe? I personally find this unscriptural statement manipulative and cruel.

“Christ didn’t collect tithe neither did the disciples, yet no one was cursed! Tithing is the old law, obeying the old law partially, without obeying all the 613 laws of Moses is what carries a curse. That’s why to us Christians, it’s referred to as the law of sin and death!”

The critic, while quoting from Hebrews 7:5 said the law of Moses required that the priests, who are descendants of Levi, must collect a tithe from the rest of the people of Israel, who are also descendants of Abraham.

  • Covid-19: Come and I will increase your heavy burden – Owei Lakemfa

“So a number of pastors and General Overseers are sending messages on the social media, not on how their members can be safe or assisted, but how they should pay their weekly offerings and monthly tithes online.”

    By Owei Lakemfa.

These are times people are burdened. When many, with the future appearing bleak due to partial or full lockdowns, need help to get by. This is when religious leaders should be praying for all, or at least their followers, and strengthening them.

Yet these are also the times some clerics are sowing fear, making near-stupid predictions, preaching end time and telling the vulnerable that this is the Passover when the angel of death will be out and only the children of the Almighty would be saved. That those who want to be saved, need to sow seeds and religiously pay offerings and tithes even if the places of worship are closed down.

So a number of pastors and General Overseers are sending messages on the social media, not on how their members can be safe or assisted, but how they should pay their weekly offerings and monthly tithes online. To such preachers, the issue is not salvation or how to contribute to the wellbeing of their members, but how money can continue flowing into their pockets. Their message to the congregation seems to be: ‘Come, you who are heavily laden, and I will add to your yoke’ This is not new, for even in the Old Times according to Prophet Amos (Chapter 2:6) there were those who: “ sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes”

But even in these times that try our faith and test our commitment, there are outstanding religious leaders ready to sacrifice their lives to protect those under their care. One of such was the Very Rev. Sister Henrietta Alokha of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and Principal of the School Chapel of Bethlehem Girls College, Abule-Ado, Lagos. On March 15, while the over 300 students were holding mass, they noticed an unusual smoke. As Shepard, she instructed the students to move towards the backdoor of the chapel in an orderly way to ensure there was no stampede. There followed a loud explosion flattering most of the school and damaging over fifty buildings in the area.

Once outside, there was a quick roll call and two of the students were missing. Despite the dangers, Sister Alokha returned to the buildings to look for the missing students. While returning, one of the roofs collapsed, killing her. All the students survived.

It is the kind of leadership and clear direction Sister Alokha exhibited that is lacking in our body polity. We run a political entity in which leadership is reduced to a sense of self- importance, clothed in over flowing rich attire, blowing siren, sharing national resources and feeding crass nepotism.

True leadership is the type exhibited by South Korea which while China was being ravaged and with not a single case of infection, had prepared at least ten thousand virus-testing kits and warehoused large medical supplies. We may not have the resources of a United States which can foot a $2 trillion-dollar stimulus package, but we should not perform less than our sister African country, Kenya which has far less resources than us.

Kenya is effecting huge cash-transfers to the elderly, orphans and other vulnerable members of society, executing immediate tax relief for low income earners, carrying out wide tax reduction, immediate VAT reduction and large scale payment of local debts, while the private sector is also encouraged to clear all outstanding payments among themselves. It is also introducing debt relief for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMES) the immediate recruitment of additional health workers, reducing interest rates and getting commercial banks to directly support borrowers that are distressed as a result of the economic effects of the pandemic.

These are some of the measures Nigeria should be taking. Yes a litre of fuel was reduced from N145 to N125, but it is not fundamental as oil has become very cheap all over the world; in any case, many parts of the country are under lockdown and interstate travel is discouraged.

For Nigeria, this is the time to cut VAT and pay ‘trader money’ of at least N20,000 as many Nigerians are experiencing massive income loss. A serious leadership would also have worked out how to financially cushion those who will lose their jobs such as in the aviation industry. To me, it does not make sense for the Buhari government to reduce the 2020 overhead budget which will mean less money in circulation, rather than cut interest payments on external borrowings. It is also not logical to me that at a time the international stock exchange has taken a dive, the Central Bank is devaluing the Naira in the name of adjustment.

While Nigerian legislators are in the process of sharing 400 exotic Toyota Camry 2020 model utility vehicles with an average cost of $50,000, the Kenyan leadership is implementing voluntary salary cuts to help increase the funds available to fight the virus. Under the scheme, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto cut their salaries by 80 percent; Ministers and Chief Administrative Secretaries by 30 percent and Principal Secretaries by 20 percent.

While it is salutary that some leading businessmen and corporate organisations have raised funds to assist in the war against the virus, this would amount to throwing good money away if given to our political leaders and officials who do not have a good record of handling funds. These are leaders under whose watch records of recovered funds looted by Late General Sani Abacha cannot be satisfactorily tendered. Rather, the donors can use such funds to directly build lasting structures like hospitals, functional and well-funded research laboratories, pharmaceutical companies that can produce essential drugs, and constructing medical and nursing schools as well as awarding scholarship for medical studies.

Leadership is about openness and transparency. If the British government can openly disclose that Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Crown Prince Charles tested positive, what is the need for secrecy in the fact that some aides of President Muhammadu Buhari tested positive?

While we cannot blame the Nigerian leadership for the advent of the virus, we can call it out on its spread and the apparent unpreparedness to contain it. As at last week, there was still talk of us building capacity to carry out some 500 tests daily while there are countries carrying out 10,000. Also, the media last week, carried claims of people in Abuja wanting to get tested being frustrated and tossed amongst government agencies.

In making a general criticism of leadership in the country and demanding an improvement, it is important to thank the Lagos State government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for stepping in to fill the vacuum created by an unresponsive leadership and giving hope to Nigerians.

  • Paying less than your tithe is deception to God – Adeboye

General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has said any Christian paying less than what he or she is supposed to pay as tithe is deception to God.

He said God could not be deceived.

“Paying less than your tithe is deception to God; it would have been better if you didn’t pay it at all,” he said.

The man of God added that telling “a lie to the marriage counsellor in your Church that you and your fiancee/fiance have not had any sexual relations before marriage is trying to deceive God. As an usher, changing the remittance figures is trying to deceive God.

“It is dangerous and thus, has grave consequences. Don’t do it. Is there any area where you have been trying to deceive God? Repent now.”

Adeboye, on his Instagram page said “It is impossible to deceive God because He knows all things, including the thoughts of your heart and the motives behind your actions. In Samuel 15:13-15 for example, King Saul told Samuel that he had already obeyed God’s commandments as regards the Amalekites.

“However, the latter heard the noise of animals. The King then lied that they were for sacrifice to God.
Why would anyone try to deceive God? In the first place, he should have asked himself if oxen sound differently for the Prophet to know which is from Amalek and which is not. He should have known that Samuel was acting based on divine knowledge. You can’t hide anything from God!

“Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit and never got a chance to repent (Acts 5:1-11). They would not have died if they had simply been honest about how much they sold the land for and how much they kept back. They were not forced to sell; they just wanted to deceive the Holy Spirit and they paid dearly for it. Do not attempt to deceive God.”

According to him, “Many years ago, when the Redeemed Christian Church of God was small, one man joined us and became very active almost immediately. In fact, we thought he was a blessing until God revealed his true identity. I was on a lengthy fast when he came to see me. There and then, God told me he was a spy, operating from the church so he would not be easily found.

“I confronted him and he tried to cover up. I told him he wouldn’t last beyond the next seven days. Within the week, God exposed him and he was picked by the then military government of Nigeria.”
