    Police nab suspect over murder of caregiver, toddler in Abuja

    The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said it has arrested a suspect over the murder of a caregiver and toddler entrusted to her in Dawaki area of Abuja.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

    Adeh said that the command, on July 23, received a report of the sudden disappearance of Mrs Chinyere Anaene, a 55-year-old nurse at Clear Hope Foundation Academy, Dawaki, Abuja, and Nanenter Yese, a one-year and two-month-old toddler.

    “Later that day, while at the police station, the caregiver’s husband received a ransom demand of ₦250 million through her mobile phone.

    “The command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit swiftly launched an investigation, employing digital forensics and traced the victims and suspects to Yelwa and Uke in Nasarawa State.

    “On July, 29, Police operatives arrested a security guard at the school who was believed to be a possible suspect who later confessed to conspiring with his best friend, now still at large to commit the crime,” she said.

    Adeh explained that the suspects had lured Anaene to the school bathroom where they attacked and strangled her.

    The FCT police spokesperson said the suspect then, took the child from a classroom and murdered him in the same manner.

    She said the bodies of the victims were placed in a sack, transported using a scavenger’s cart, and dumped in a canal.

    “The suspect led police to the location, where the remains were recovered,” she added.

    Adeh expressed the command’s heartfelt condolences to the families of Anaene and Baby Nanenter and assured that justice would be pursued with full resolve on the matter.

    Gunmen kidnap toddler, five others in Taraba

    No fewer than six persons travelling from Wukari to Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State have been abducted by suspected bandits in the early hours of Tuesday.

    The acting Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Leha Reform, confirmed the incident.

    According to him, the incident took place at Chanchanji, a suburb of Takum local government area where the bandits mounted a roadblock.

    Leha explained that five of the abducted travellers included two females, three males and a toddler.

    He stated that on the receipt of the information, combined security operatives were dispatched to the scene and have launched an investigation into the matter with a view to unravelling those behind the act.

    The Takum Wukari expressway has been a soft spot for criminals unleashing mayhem on travellers, especially during the Tiv Vs Jukun Crisis.

    Only recently 27 travellers were also abducted on same road with 23 released and four others still in captivity.

    It was also on same road that a Catholic priest was killed and burnt beyond recognition in 2019.

    43-year-old allegedly defiles toddler in church

    A Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Thursday remanded a 43-year-old man, Ifeanyi Ndieze, who allegedly defiled a three-year-old girl in a church.

    The court could not take the plea of the defendant as the Magistrate, Mrs M. I. Dan-Oni, said she needed advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    She ordered that the defendant should be kept at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the advice, and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward a copy to the DPP.

    Dan-Oni adjourned the case until Dec. 2 for mention.

    The defendant, who resides at Karimu Street, Surulere, is facing a charge of defilement.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on Oct. 29 at 8:00p.m at No. 18, Salau St., Surulere.

    Ekhueorohan said that the defendant saw the toddler in a church and inserted his fingers in her private part in the guise of playing with her.

    The prosecutor submitted that the defendant was arrested after the toddler told her mother what he did.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that defilement contravenes Section 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

  • 11-year-old boy remanded for allegedly throwing toddler in a well

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, in Lagos State, on Monday ordered that an 11-year-old boy, who allegedly threw a one-year-old in a well, be remanded in a Special Correction Centre for boys in Oregun, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

    The police charged the boy with murder

    Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo, who gave the order, adjourned the case until March 6, for the DPP advice.

    Earlier, Inspector Chinalu Uwadione the prosecutor had told the court that the defendant had committed the offence on February 13, at 4.00 p.m., at No. 6, Afolabi close, Ojo.

    He alleged that the defendant had thrown a one-year-old baby boy into a well while carrying him around.

    The offence, the prosecutor noted, contravened the provisions of Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

  • Missing toddler: Man in court over alleged demand for ransom

    A 32-year-old man, Oloche Udeh, on Tuesday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged demand of N2.5 million as ransom for an information on a missing toddler.

    Udeh is facing a charge of fraud.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Oladele Adebayo, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 8 at 2.30p.m., at Oregun, Lagos.

    Adebayo said the accused asked for the N2.5 million from parents of the missing five-year-old child in exchange for the information of her whereabouts.

    The offence contravened Section 2(ii) of the Kidnapping Prohibition Laws of Lagos State, 2017.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr O.O. Olatunji, remanded the accused in Ikoyi Prison.

    Olatunji, however, ordered that the case file should be sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    He adjourned the case until Sept.10.
