My assessment of the Super Eagles – By Tony Nwaka

    By Tony Nwaka

The Nigerian senior football team, the Super Eagles, is on the brink of history in Ivory Coast. They’ve reached the semifinals of the 2023 AFCON competition by defeating Angola 1-0. Just two more victories and they will be crowned the new African champions. I have attempted below an overview of the team, starting with the head coach, Jose Peseiro.

PESEIRO: The Portuguese has succeeded within 30 days to reverse the negative opinions of Nigerians about his performance. His tactical innovation of a fluid 6-man defensive formation is bringing the desired victories, though with narrow margins. Yes, the current team is still a work in progress, but, at least, we can confidently say that he is building his core structure around Nwabali, Ekong, Ajayi, Aina, Bassey, Zaidu, Onyeka, Iwobi, Lookman, Simon, Osimhen. Remember that it took Nigeria’s most successful coach, Clemence Westerhof, five years to perfect his formidable arsenal of Rufai, Eguavoen, Okechukwu, Okafor, Iroha, Oliseh, Okocha, Amunike, Amokachi, Yekini, and Finidi. Will Peseiro get better with time?

NWABALI: A great discovery. His confidence between the posts is phenomenal and his saves are astonishing. Just think of that 4th minute breathtaking goal-line block that would have given Angola the lead. His commanding presence reminds me of such greats as Chilavert of Paraguay, Shilton of England, Buffon of Italy, Nkono of Cameroon, and, of course, our own Rufai. Nwabali will go places. Strangely, our scouts didn’t notice him all these years.

AINA: A delight to watch. The way he floats gracefully up and down the right flank is exemplary, just like what Marcelo, the Real Madrid and Brazilian player, was doing on the left side. But against Angola, Aina looked somewhat withdrawn. Wasn’t as expressive as he’d been. Could it be he was tired? Or was it just a tactical instruction from the coach to be less adventuresome? All the same, he’s a pleasant bundle of skills and technique.

BASSEY: A dogged fighter. Reminds me of our Benedict Iroha and the Brazilian Roberto Carlos, though not with their lightning offensive forays. His uncompromising defensive solidity is also reminiscent of two Italian legends of catenaccio; Gattuso and Gentile. Indeed, Claudio Gentile so frustrated the youthful Maradona at Espana ’82, that the Argentinian derisively called him a caveman. But there’s something I noticed in the Angolan match that Bassey would have to work on; his temperament. His furious outburst against unfavourable decisions could be his undoing and might be collectively damaging in crucial situations. Aside from that, Bassey is simply another German machine.

EKONG: Rock of Gibraltar. An irrepressible warhorse. The central pillar of the Nigerian defence. I thought the absence of Balogun, with whom he formed the famed Oyibo Wall, would hinder his performance at this AFCON. But his defensive excellence has elevated him to the planes of the Italian Cannavaro, Cameroonian Rigobert Song, and Spanish Sergio Ramos. Thankfully, Ekong has been so professional in his tackles that he hasn’t drawn those notorious red cards that blighted the proficiency of Sergio Ramos. Ekong is simply superb.

AJAYI: Noiselessly efficient. It would take an expert eye to note the indispensable role of this inconspicuous monster. Indeed, calm waters run deep. He’s the quintessential libero and sweeper blended in one indefinable package. His types are rare. The closest recollection I have of his semblance is probably our Yisa Shofoluwe, whom the legendary Ernest Okonkwo nicknamed the Dean of Defence. Looks harmless, yet tremendously impregnable. Ajayi seems not to be there until you cross his path only to discover an impenetrable fortress.

ZAIDU: A brilliant defender. But he is lacking awfully in offensive technique. He appears to be one of the two weak links in Peseiro’s assemblage. While his defensive qualities are beyond doubt, something has to be done about his contribution to our attack force. If he does not improve on his performance when the team is pushing forward, then he may have to be dropped in our post-AFCON matches, and let’s experiment with the pair of Onyeka and Ndidi. Or he’ll be strictly instructed to always pass the ball and never cross the centre line. Let him just focus on his defensive duties, for which he has undeniable competence.

ONYEKA: An impressive replacement for Wilfred Ndidi. He has demonstrated a remarkable capacity at the gate of our defence line. But he still needs to sharpen his support for our strike force so that he can be admitted into the elite class of the Sunday Olisehs, Ogenyi Onazis, John Obi Mikels, Blockbuster Alloysius Atuegbus, and Frenchman Ngolo Kante. Onyeka is a footballer of boundless potential. But he appeared slightly off-form against Angola.

IWOBI: An intelligent attacking midfielder. Although lacking the genius of his uncle, Jay Jay Okocha, Iwobi seems to be the only spark in our creative midfield department. But, I’m sorry to say this, he is the other weak link we have in our current formation (Zaidu is the first). It looks like Iwobi is not able to sufficiently adapt to Peseiro’s innovative formation. He does not track back in support of the defence, unlike Moses Simon who does so effortlessly. And, most times you find Iwobi loitering idly by when he should be chasing the opponent. I want to believe he will return to his brilliant self. I mean, you only need to recall his exploits at Arsenal, Everton, Fulham, and the sublime combination he once had with Iheanacho, to know that Iwobi still carries that creative talent in Jay Jay’s bloodline.

SIMON: The pocket dynamite of the Super Eagles. Fast, inventive and precise, you undermine his small stature to your peril; just like Bebeto of Brazil. I wished he had released the ball to Lookman on his second brilliant run. That would have given us the second goal against Angola. No defence can stop Moses Simon on a good day, and he seems to have peaked at this AFCON. His pacy combination with Osimhen and Lookman has created a lethal attacking threat for opposing teams. And his ability to fly back to support the defence distinguishes him from the pack. Simon combines the agility of Emanuel Amunike with the inventiveness of Humphrey Edobor.

LOOKMAN: The archetypal representation of vision, pace, power, and precision. Did you notice that his goals were one touch? No trapping, no repositioning, no hesitation. He hits the ball as it gets to him and, boom! The net is already shaking. If you blend the precision of Filippo Inzaghi, the vision of Kanu Nwankwo, and the creativity of Austin Jay Jay Okocha, with the grit of Daniel ‘The Bull’ Amokachi, there is Ademola Lookman. A prodigious talent who knows the right place to be at the right time. Lookman might just grow into the African Messi.

OSIMHEN: A tireless fighter with tremendous predatory instincts. His goalscoring ability may have failed him at critical junctures, but his presence alone has stampeded many defences to the graveyard. Yes, he may not have been hammering in the desired goals, but his excellent teamwork has remained a driving force for the Super Eagles. Defenders know he is one of the most dangerous attackers in the world. Incidentally, as they focus on him, Lookman and Simon would be doing the damage. That is how potent the Peseiro boys are at this AFCON.

And when you look at the bench and see that we still have Kelechi Iheanacho of Leicester, Samuel Chukwueze of AC Milian, Terem Moffi of Nice, and Bruno Onyemaechi of Boavista; when you see that the dreaded big teams like Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Tunisia, and Algeria have all fallen by the wayside, then you’ll realise that AFCON 2023 may have been ordained for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

INTERVIEW: My mission to HoR is to actualize quality representation of Aniocha/Oshimili people – Dr Tony Nwaka

Dr. Tony Nwaka is the All Progressives Congress, APC Candidate for the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal constituency in the House of Representatives in 2023, the grassroots politician and author of several books in this chat with TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) Deputy Editor, Adebayo Animasaun, spoke on various issues ranging from his mission to the Green Chamber, chances of the APC taking over the PDP in Delta state and other sundry issues, excerpts.

    Hear him:

What is actually your mission to the House of Reps?

To give effective legislative representation to my constituency through laws, oversight and infrastructural provisions that will directly impact their lives. Particularly in the areas of education and agriculture, for which our people are renowned. And, also, put emphatic efforts in the reviving of all such abandoned federal projects in the area that would improve the water, energy and transportation needs of my people. And, as a nationally recognized writer, I shall promote legislations that galvanize the creative spirit of our people, especially as it relates to youth engagement.

Deltans are highly demanding people. Can you attract enough constituency projects to your constituents, and also allow your constituents to have direct access to you as their rep?

Nwaka: Yes, Delta State is renowned for excellence. Our people expect their representatives at all levels to live up to that tradition, whilst keeping an open door for unfettered access. On these notes, I can confidently say that my records speak for me. My people know that asides my being ever accessible, I also have the capacity to meet their expectations as their voice at the House of Representatives. More so, with the increasing prospects of my party the APC winning the presidential election and controlling the majority of seats at the National Assembly.

What are the chances of APC in Delta?

Very bright. If you’ve been following political developments in the state in the last seven years, you’ll see that APC have grown tremendously across the three senatorial zones. The strong political structures of APC in Delta State have been reinforced by the many big political players that have joined the party. But more importantly, the generality of Delta people are beginning to ask critical questions about how their state has been managed in the last few years, vis-a-vis the achievements in neighboring states with similar revenue profile. Then, of course, there is the introduction of BVAS and other technological improvements that have brought significant credibility to our electoral process. I am of the conviction that this phenomenal political climate will positively shape the 2023 polls in the direction of APC.

Will Omo-Agege win and do you think he’ll perform better than Okowa’s government?

Yes, I believe that His Excellency Ovie Omo-Agege will win the Delta State governorship election in 2023. If you’ve been monitoring the on-going ward and LGA campaigns across the state, led by Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege, you would have noticed the massive support he is enjoying across the land. It’s unprecedented. We’ve never seen the opposition in Delta State garner such huge affection and endorsement. I believe that the people will reaffirm this same enthusiasm at the 2023 elections. And, judging by the enviable track records of H.E. Omo-Agege, I expect that given executive powers he will outperform his predecessors.

Recently, PDP alleged that you know nothing about politics and that you have nothing to offer Deltans?

Hahaha! And they expect any sensible person to believe that? A man who had contested and won election to become a local government chairman. He did not only serve out his full term as a council chairman with evident accomplishments, he also contested and won another election at that time to become the Delta State ALGON Chairman (Chairman of Chairmen). The same man later served as commissioner for eight years in the different ministries of Agriculture, Special Duties, Local Government Affairs, and was appointed twice as Commissioner for Education, with notable footprints in every position. Same man also went ahead to contest and win the highly competitive primary of the APC to secure the ticket of the party for the 2023 elections into the Federal House of Representatives. A man that was honored by Independent Newspaper as the best Council Chairman in Nigeria on Poverty Alleviation, and also by Guardian Newspaper as one of 50 Nigerians of Integrity and Distinction. My dear, that’s the man they say he knows nothing about politics and has nothing to offer. I believe by now you are already wondering what could their definition of politics be! Is it now that I left the PDP to join the APC that I suddenly became ignorant of politics and generally bereft of ideas? Isn’t that ridiculous?

    Finally, who is Tony Nwaka?

I am a Nigerian with an undying passion for public service. Aged 57 years, I hail from Ogwashi Uku in Aniocha South LGA of Delta State. Married to Abimbola from Lagos State and blessed with children. Retired from the Delta State Civil Service in 2002. Contested and served as Local Government Council Chairman and Chairman of Chairmen (Delta State ALGON Chairman).

    i) As a local government chairman, I constructed health centers, residential quarters, offices, and markets, empowered the youths and women, improved internally generated revenue, amongst many other achievements.

    (v) As commissioner for special duties/emergency services, my management of the unprecedented flood of 2012 was adjudged the best in the country. Official letters were written to my office by neighboring states, commending our outstanding efforts.

(vi) As a writer, my book ‘Mountain of Yesterday’ was shortlisted by the NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature as one of the 12 best books out of the 202 entries from Nigerian authors across the world in 2021.

  • PDP cautions Tony Nwaka against tarnishing image of Ndudi Elumelu

PDP cautions Tony Nwaka against tarnishing image of Ndudi Elumelu

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has cautioned Tony Nwaka, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking to represent the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal constituency in the House of Representatives in 2023.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Nwaka was cautioned against tarnishing the image of Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives in a statement released by Dr. Ifeanyi M. Osuoza, Deputy Director/Secretary, Media and Publicity Committee, Delta State PDP Campaign Council.

According to the statement, the party would have ignored the “childishly silly and excessive boastfulness of Tony Nwaka about his personal abilities and achievements”, but thought it necessary to respond for the sake of those who may have been taken in by the error and false presentation.

The statement added: “The intervention is also to deflate the puerile assertions and invectives thrown against the person of Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, the effective Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, the pride of Aniocha/Oshimili and PDP in the Green Chambers, and the party’s candidate for Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in the 2023 elections.

“It is important to let Tony Nwaka know that nobody is against his right to seek to contest for the election to represent the people of Aniocha/Oshimili in the House of Representatives. Of course, he is already the candidate of the lackluster and wicked APC, otherwise referred to as the proverbial ‘Bad Drug” that has thrown this nation into negativities in all ramifications from which the PDP seeks to rescue and reset Nigeria. But we ask him to go out there and campaign, rather than indulge in an exercise of vainglory, deceptively woven to goodwill the people.

“The Delta PDP calls on Tony Nwaka to back down from his high horse of futile academic exercise that is not a prerequisite for winning elections. It is mindless of him to want to destroy Ndudi Elumelu, whose good works remain sweet-smelling savour before the good people of Aniocha/Oshimili by pandering to base and irresponsible sentiments.

“Which ideas does Tony Nwaka of APC have that he wants to offer? Is it the idea of one from a political party that has been acknowledged by Nigerians and Deltans in particular, as a party of liars and political deceits? Or is it an idea of one from a political party that has set Nigeria on a downward spin? Where was Tony Nwaka when his ruling party unsettled the good people of Nigeria by afflicting them with poverty, so much so that the nation has now become the poverty capital of the world? Through unmitigated cluelessness, the economic prosperity of Nigeria has been thrown overboard by the APC Federal Government, and here is someone claiming he has ideas to give to the people of Aniocha/Oshimili when he could not give his ill-informed party the idea to stimulate this country and put her on the path of economic growth?

“Let’s ask Tony Nwaka what idea has he given to his ruling party to ease the insecurity situation in the country, as well as make the farms less harmful a place to go to by farmers?

“Nigerians have rejected APC and all its candidates, beginning with the sick Presidential candidate, Tony Nwaka for their cluelessness. So, have the good people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency rejected Tony Nwaka.

“For the good people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, the PDP candidate for the 2023 election, like the good wine, he does not need to be bushed. His antecedents in good representation over the years, with tangible and verifiable results speaks volumes about his acceptability by the people.

“Tony Nwaka should not seek to hypnotize the people with his unproductive sweet tongue; we challenge him to go to the polls, where Ndudi Elumelu, his Achilles’ heel is waiting to give him a resounding defeat and fall”.
