Chelsea loses out as Tottenham endorses Xavi Simons from Leipzig

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Spurs have reached a €60 million agreement with Leipzig for the Dutch international, beating London rivals Chelsea to his signature.

Both clubs had been pushing to secure the 21-year-old attacking midfielder this summer, but Tottenham have now won the race.

Deal done also on player side as €60m fixed fee has been agreed overnight as revealed, now all sealed.

All contracts 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 on both player and club sides on contract until June 2030 ➕ 2 year option until 2032.

Xavi has already completed main part of medical… and his move to Spurs is done, set to be announced today.

Spurs have been searching for a new attacking midfielder for months with their recruitment team failing in attempts to sign Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze.

Their need for a new player in that position has ramped up in recent weeks with James Maddison suffering an ACL injury that is likely to keep him out for most of the season.

EPL: Tottenham hit by more heartbreak

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt another setback as Dejan Kulusevski’s knee injury will sideline him until next year.

The Swedish international suffered a knee injury last season, and the latest update adds to the challenges facing Thomas Frank’s side, reports The Guardian.

Spurs will also be without James Maddison until early next year and missed out on two key summer signings, Eze and Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest.

Tottenham travel to the Etihad on Saturday at midday for a clash many teams would fear, but not Thomas Frank’s side.

Across all competitions, Pep Guardiola has lost nine times to Spurs in his managerial career, with only Liverpool (10) handing him more defeats.

BREAKING: PSG comes from 2-0 down to defeat Tottenham to lift 2025 UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain floored Tottenham Hotspur on penalties to win the 2025 UEFA Super Cup.

The European champions came from 2-0 down in the closing stages of normal time and then recovered from 2-0 down in the shootout to prevail.

Spurs looked destined for glory thanks to goals either side of half-time from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. But they were unable to close it out as substitutes Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos sent the game to penalties.

Vitinha put PSG‘s first penalty wide, but his team-mates were flawless with their other four spot kicks. Van de Ven had his penalty saved and Mathys Tel put his wide of the target.

PSG penalties scored: Goncalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, Lee Kang-in, Nuno Mendes; PSG penalties missed: Vitinha.

Tottenham penalties scored: Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pedro Porro; Tottenham penalties missed/saved: Van de Ven, Tel.

Tottenham beat north London rivals Arsenal 1-0 in Hong Kong; Pape Sarr scores goal from halfway line to give Spurs pre-season friendly win; new Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres came on as second-half substitute for debut but only had two touches as Arsenal fell to defeat

Pape Sarr’s stunning halfway line goal gave Tottenham a 1-0 pre-season friendly win over north London rivals Arsenal in Hong Kong.

Sarr robbed Myles Lewis-Skelly – who Arsenal felt had been fouled by Richarlison in midfield – before firing an outrageous long-range lob just inside Arsenal’s half over a stranded David Raya to score with Spurs’ only shot on target of the game in the 45th minute.

Before Sarr’s screamer, the Arsenal goalkeeper had a couple of shaky moments at corners as Spurs hit the post twice directly from deliveries, as Richarlison missed a glorious close-range chance from the second corner.

Tottenham winger Wilson Odobert also hit the post with a low shot in a feisty and physical first half, which saw Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur booked for a late tackle on Bukayo Saka.

There was more north London derby needle in the second half as Pedro Porro pushed Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta before taking a throw-in, with the Spurs defender feeling Arteta was in his way.

Arteta brought new signing Viktor Gyokeres on in the 77th minute for his debut as Saka came off after receiving treatment.

Gyokeres, who joined on Saturday in a £63.5m deal, did not have enough time to make an impact as he had just two touches, with Arsenal having one shot on target in the defeat.

Spurs, who won the Europa League last season, were presented with a trophy for winning the first-ever north London derby overseas, leading the club to tweet: “another one for the trophy cabinet”.

  • Tottenham end trophy drought in Europa League victory

Tottenham end trophy drought in Europa League victory

Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final at the Estadio San Mamés in Bilbao.

Spurs’ victory ends a 17-year wait for another piece of silverware after their 2008 EFL Cup win.

It also confirms the club’s participation in the Champions League next season.

The only goal of the match was scored just before the half-time break, when Brennan Johnson guided the ball into the back of Man Utd’s net.

Spurs’ triumph is notable as, next season, they will become the first Premier League club to finish outside the top ten and then play in the Champions League.

This win-or-bust clash between two heavily maligned English giants offered a golden ticket to the UCL, despite their truly atrocious domestic form.

Rarely has the final of Europe’s secondary competition had so much at stake, and neither defence looked particularly assured in the opening exchanges.

Tottenham worked the first clear-cut chance when Brennan Johnson made a surging run down the right and picked out Pape Matar Sarr, whose effort was blocked by Harry Maguire.

Down the other end, Maguire teed up Amad Diallo to fire a shot right across the face of goal after Tottenham failed to clear their lines from a United corner.

However, Ange Postecoglou’s side broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute when a whipped cross from Sarr caused havoc in the area, with Johnson getting to the ball at the near post before Luke Shaw inadvertently applied the final touch.

It won’t win any prizes for its aesthetic qualities, but it came at a crucial time towards the end of a first-half slugfest in the Basque Country.

Johnson’s breakthrough was the 31st time that the Red Devils had conceded the opening goal in a match this season, the most of any Premier League club across all competitions.

It was the latest damning statistic for Ruben Amorim’s men, but they looked to change the narrative when Rasmus Højlund headed over from Amad’s cross.

Tottenham’s defending hardly inspired much confidence, with Guglielmo Vicario just about managing to thwart Leny Yoro from Bruno Fernandes’ set piece.

The north Londoners were holding onto their slender lead by the skin of their teeth when Vicario failed to collect a routine free-kick from Fernandes, but he was bailed out by Micky van de Ven’s stunning acrobatic clearance of Højlund’s header.

United continued to look the more likely side to strike next, and Fernandes should have done much better when his diving header went wide from Noussair Mazraoui’s cross.

Amorim introduced Alejandro Garnacho as part of a double change with Joshua Zirkzee, with the former almost making an immediate impact after forcing Vicario into a fine one-handed save.

Ultimately, it was to be Tottenham’s night, as Postecoglou’s players earned a piece of silverware that more gifted Spurs teams during Mauricio Pochettino’s exciting tenure failed to deliver.

It was a fine way for the Australian to mark his 100th match in charge, as Spurs achieved their 150th victory in European competition.

Meanwhile, United’s unbeaten UEL run ends in their 15th and final game in this competition, as the inquest into the club’s disastrous campaign begins.

  • Enzo Fernandez shines as Chelsea subdue Tottenham

Enzo Fernandez shines as Chelsea subdue Tottenham

Chelsea moved back up to fourth with a 1-0 victory over a lacklustre Tottenham Hotspur side, as Ange Postecoglou became the first Spurs manager to lose his first four Premier League games against the Blues.

Enzo Maresca’s team almost broke the deadlock inside the opening minute when Trevoh Chalobah looked to pick out Nicolas Jackson, who almost benefitted from Micky van de Ven’s interception ricocheting off him before cannoning off the post.

Tottenham were looking shaky at the back, and they were nearly punished after Marc Cucurella’s pass went straight through to Malo Gusto, whose effort hit the side netting.

The Tottenham backline were continuing to endure a torrid time, with Jackson firing over the bar after being given the freedom of the penalty box. Guglielmo Vicario was hardly looking convincing between the sticks for Spurs, but the Italian made a fine save to parry over Jadon Sancho’s cross after the Manchester United loanee was picked out by Pedro Neto.

Ultimately, a lack of cutting edge from the hosts in the final third ensured both teams ended the first half on level terms.

Chelsea’s deserved breakthrough came in the 50th minute courtesy of Enzo Fernández, who powered home a header from Cole Palmer’s enticing cross to finally make the visitors pay for their hazardous defending.

The floodgates looked to have opened when Moisés Caicedo rifled home a superb volley after the visiting defence failed to deal with a Fernández set piece, but their blushes were spared as a lengthy VAR review determined an offside in the build-up.

The north Londoners then thought they had found an equaliser out of nowhere when Pape Matar Sarr’s speculative strike squirmed past Robert Sánchez.

However, VAR took centre stage once again, penalising the Senegal international for a foul on Caicedo. Postecoglou’s men were offering very little going forward, yet they could have claimed a stunning equaliser late on when Sánchez kept out Son Heung-min’s sliding attempt at the far post from Brennan Johnson’s cross.

It was hardly a classic to match the thoroughly entertaining clashes these two sides have served up over the years – not that Chelsea will care, claiming a 10th win in 13 PL meetings with their rivals from north of the River Thames.

Meanwhile, this marks a ninth away PL defeat of the season for Tottenham, with only Leicester City (11) and Southampton (12) losing more times on the road, leaving them languishing in 14th.

  • Man Utd, Tottenham advance into Europa League quarter-finals

Man Utd, Tottenham advance into Europa League quarter-finals

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick and Wilson Odobert was on target twice for Tottenham Hotspur as the two Premier League strugglers reached the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday.

Fernandes converted two penalties and got the other from open play as United came from behind to beat 10-man Real Sociedad 4-1 on the night and 5-2 on aggregate.

The Spanish visitors had led early from the first penalty at Old Trafford converted by Mikel Oyarzabal, but their comeback hopes ended in a red card for substitute Jon Aramburu, and Diogo Dalot got the final United goal.

Spurs overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit against AZ Alkmaar with a 3-1 over their Dutch opponents from Odobert’s brace and James Maddison.

They next face 2022 champions Eintracht Frankfurt who completed a 6-2 aggregate success over Ajax with a 4-1 home win which included a brace from German 2014 World Cup hero Mario Götze.

United’s quarter-final opponents are Olympique Lyon, whose Georges Mikautadze and Ernest Nuamah also got two goals each in a 4-0 demolition of Romania’s FCSB for a 7-1 aggregate success.

Spurs and United are far off the European berths in the Premier League, and their only realistic chance of European football lies in winning the Europa League which earns a Champions League berth.

Elsewhere, Spain international Nico Williams scored twice as Athletic Bilbao remained on course towards the May 21 final in their home stadium with a 3-1 success over 10-man Roma, which overturned a 2-1 defeat in Rome. The Italians had Mats Hummels sent off early.

Bilbao now take on Rangers who prevailed 3-2 on penalties over Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce who had locked the aggregate score at 3-3 with a 2-0 in Glasgow.

The other quarter-final tie set for April 10 and 17 is between Lazio and Norway’s Bodø/Glimt, who ousted Conference League champions Olympiacos.

  • EPL: Maddison shines as Tottenham sink Manchester United

EPL: Maddison shines as Tottenham sink Manchester United

Fit-again James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario starred as Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 to end their long winless run at home and expose the problems facing Ruben Amorim and his injury-hit squad.

Maddison – who had missed the last five games – pounced when Andre Onana parried Lucas Bergvall’s first-half shot to give Spurs the lead while Vicario, on his first appearance since November 23, repeatedly denied Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

In the battle of the Premier League’s two biggest underperformers this season, it was Spurs who looked like they could finally be on an upward curve as key players return from the treatment room after months of injury issues. They celebrated ending a seven-game wait for a league win on their patch and a third win over United across all competitions this term. It’s the first time since 1989/90 they’ve done that.

Spurs are now up to 12th after back-to-back wins in the Premier League for just the second time this season – they also beat Brentford and United consecutively in September.

Amorim’s side had their chances – most glaringly when Garnacho blazed over when unmarked in the box and Joshua Zirkzee nodded wide – but out of possession were regularly stretched open.

With Amad Diallo likely out for the season, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro sidelined, and Victor Lindelof surrounded by teenagers without any Premier League experience on the bench, Amorim’s alternatives were severely limited. He didn’t make a sub until the 90th minute, underlining the point.

United languish 15th in the table and are in desperate need of a spark if they are to make a success of a season in which the FA Cup and Europa League – which also features Spurs – have become their priority. But a significant shift in their performances and results doesn’t appear imminent.

  • 5 players set to return to help Tottenham ahead of Man Utd clash

5 players set to return to help Tottenham ahead of Man Utd clash

Five first-team players are all pushing to return to full training for Tottenham this week as they prepare to face Manchester United.

After Spurs were eliminated by Aston Villa in the FA Cup, manager Ange Postecoglou opened up on how he hoped to have a number of players back available in a game that could decide his future at the club.

He said he hopes for a “reset” and that “three, maybe four, players back this week, with the possibility of one or two others in the week or two after that”. Spurs have fallen to 14th on the table and have crashed out of both domestic cups in the space of four days as the manager relies on the vast injuries as an excuse.

However, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner are all set to return to the side which will give Postecoglou a major boost in the coming weeks after many have called for him to step down from his position. Striker Dominic Solanke is behind the five stars with Postecoglou forecasting he would be out for around six weeks with the knee injury.

The likes of Richarlison, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are all ruled out, however, but after Postecoglou allowed his players Monday, Tuesday and Thursday off those who have returned may get the chance to get back up to speed before Sunday’s game. The Tottenham head coach explained how injuries have disrupted his season and have had a major effect on their inconsistent form.

“Two and a half months of asking 18-year-olds and 17-year-olds and senior players, with no rest, to play Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday,” he said. “If you think that is not at all a factor of how this team is performing then there’s nothing else I can say. There’s nothing else I can explain.”

  • Transfer: Crystal Palace reject Tottenham’s £70m bid for defender

Transfer: Crystal Palace reject Tottenham’s £70m bid for defender

Crystal Palace have rejected a bid from Tottenham for defender Marc Guehi thought to be about £70m.

The England international, who attracted interest from Newcastle in the summer, has 18 months left on his contract with Palace.

He has made 23 appearances and scored three goals in the Premier League this season as Palace find themselves 12th – three points above Tottenham in 14th.

Spurs are not expected to increase their bid for the 24-year-old in this window.

Palace turned down four bids from Newcastle for Guehi in the summer, with the final offer worth up to £65m.

Chelsea are also understood to have Guehi on a list of defensive targets, despite selling him to Palace for £18m in 2021.

Palace have just three fit centre-backs after Trevoh Chalobah was recalled from his loan spell by Chelsea and Chadi Riad sustained a long-term knee injury.

The club looked into signing Portugal’s Tiago Djalo, but they needed Juventus to recall the 24-year-old from his loan spell at Porto before he could join the Eagles.

Meanwhile, injury-hit Spurs are in the search of defensive reinforcements despite pipping Wolves to the loan signing of Lens defender Kevin Danso on Sunday.

Romanian centre-back Radu Dragusin sustained a knee injury in their Europa League win over Elfsborg on Thursday to join Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie on the injury list.

There are reports Spurs have looked at other central defenders, including Chelsea’s Axel Disasi and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

Tottenham have been approached for comment.
