EPL: Arteta speaks on Arsenal’s title chances after victory over Tottenham

Arsenal must not get carried away with their Premier League title chances after edging local rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in a hard-fought London derby, manager Mikel Arteta said on Sunday.

The Gunners raced into a three-goal lead by halftime but Spurs battled back with two goals and left the visitors holding on for the points after a storming late comeback.

“Don’t get carried away with yourself. Just understand we have to be better, we want to be better. There’s a margin for improvement and we go again against Bournemouth,” said Arteta.

League leaders Arsenal host the Cherries on Saturday before finishing with games at Manchester United and home to Everton in a thrilling title race as they try to hold off Manchester City.

“We are right on it. The motivation and what is ahead is beautiful,” he told reporters after a nervous finish away to Tottenham, who could have snatched a draw at the end.

Arsenal have bounced back after losing 2-0 at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League and then 1-0 at Bayern Munich as they exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals.

They beat Wolverhampton Wanderers away, thrashed Chelsea at The Emirates and have now taken three points at neighbours Spurs, which Arteta acknowledged was always difficult.

However, he said his team was ready for the challenge and raring to go as they chase their first league title in 20 years.

“They’ve played a lot of minutes, a lot of games. It’s an emotionally demanding month but yesterday I had to stop them in training because they wanted more. That’s a good sign.

“This team has a lot of courage and determination to make it happen. I have (faith in the players).

“In the last few minutes I was doubting a little to be fair,” he said with a smile.

  • Tottenham Hotspur in discussions with prospective investors

Tottenham Hotspur in discussions with prospective investors

Tottenham Hotspur are in discussions with prospective investors to capitalize on the club’s long-term potential, Chairman, Daniel Levy has said.

The Premier League club’s total revenue for the financial year to June 30, 2023 exceeded half a billion pounds ($628 million) for the first time, with the figure of 549.6 million pounds a significant increase on 444 million pounds for the previous year.

However, operating expenses including first-team costs have risen by 21 per cent to  487.9 million pounds, with a loss of 86.8 million pounds put down to “significant and continued investment in the playing squad” in the financial results published by the club on Wednesday.

Levy announced in his statement accompanying the results that Spurs were looking for an injection of equity.

He wrote: “To capitalise on our long-term potential, to continue to invest in the teams and undertake future capital projects, the club requires a significant increase in its equity base.

“The board and its advisors, Rothschild & Co., are in discussions with prospective investors. Any recommended investment proposal would require the support of the club’s shareholders.”

Revenue from match receipts, UEFA prize money, TV and media and commercial all increased on 2021-2022, as did the profit from operations which rose from 112.3 million pounds to 138.7 million pounds.

The club report that their net debt as of June 2023 was 677.4 million pounds. Over 90 per cent of their borrowings of 851.2 million pounds are at fixed rates, with an average interest rate of 2.79 per cent.

“We expect commercial revenues to rise from third-party events, although this will not compensate for the lack of European football this season,” Levy wrote.

He also said: “Additionally, as reflected in these results, we expect the impact of rising costs, caused by geo-political events, to continue to impact all areas of our operations.

“Our ethos is clear – to be far-sighted and run the club sustainably. This involves strict control of our cost base, increased commercial and sponsorship revenues and consistent European participation, all of which are key to our ability to continue to invest in the squad and win top honours.

“Since opening the stadium in April 2019, we have invested over £600 million in our men’s and women’s first-team squads.”

EPL: Tottenham dent Manchester City’s hopes of winning title

Tottenham Hotspurs today defeated Manchester City 1-0 at the London stadium to secure all three points for the north London club side.

In the 15th minute,  Hojbjerg drifts into Manchester’s city 18-yard box and then send the ball to unmarked Harry Kane who wasted no time to slot the ball past goalkeeper, Ederson to put Spurs 1-0 up.

The goal against Manchester City is Harry Kane’s 200th English Premier League goal.

The English forward is only the third to hit the mark after Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney.

Spurs currently sit in fifth place amid a disappointing campaign, that already sees them four points behind Newcastle United who currently hold a top-four spot.

The north London side has now reduced the gap between it and Newcastle to just one point and a lifeline for a UEFA Champions League place.

Antonio Conte did not attend the game as he continues his recovery after an operation.

The Spurs manager is still in Italy recuperating after gallbladder surgery and is not yet well enough to return to touchline duties.

His assistant Cristian Stellini was in charge of the game.

The win over Manchester City meant Arsenal will still maintain its lead with 5 points with a game in hand.

Qatar 2022: Richarlison’s stunning scissor kick goal for Brazil melts Serbia [VIDEO]

Tottenham Hotspur striker, Richarlison de Andrade, put Brazil up 2-0 on Thursday with a stunning bicycle kick in the 73rd minute against Serbia for his second goal of the game.

The ball control and the finish were simply sublime for the Tottenham Hotspur striker.

The Brazilians could not score in the first half before Richarlison converted his first in the 62nd minute. It did not take long after that for the second, stunning, goal.

The Selecão’s afternoon went according to plan against Serbia, with a dominant performance leading to three points and a successful World Cup opener.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Brazil have come to Qatar as the favourites for a sixth title, two decades after their last victory.

Richarlison's stunning scissor kick goal for Brazil melts Serbia in FIFA World Cup

The result continues Brazil’s superb record in the World Cup group stage, in which their last defeat came in 1998 against Norway when they had already secured a place in the next round.

Tite’s side is now already on top of Group G ahead of Switzerland, who beat Cameroon 1-0 earlier and who are Brazil’s next opponents.

The scoreline here was the same as when these sides met in the group stage in 2018 but Brazil is determined to do far better than four years ago when they lost to Belgium in the quarter-finals.

However, Brazil would have known not to take Serbia lightly, given that the side that lie 21st in the FIFA rankings are one of Europe’s most improved teams and topped their qualifying group above Portugal.

Yet it still would have been a huge shock for Brazil to lose at a ground where they intend to return for the final on December 18.

Tite sent out a very attack-minded side, with Neymar in support of Richarlison while Raphinha and Vinicius occupied the wings and Lucas Paqueta added creativity in central midfield.

Neymar, the world’s most expensive player, kicked off needing just two goals to equal Pele’s all-time record tally of 77 for Brazil, but he will have to wait a little longer to get them.

Serbia did their best to frustrate the Paris Saint-Germain superstar, who came close to scoring direct from an early corner that would have raised the roof at the magnificent Lusail Stadium, where the stands were filled with yellow and green.

Conte vs Tuchel: Tottenham’s coach states reasons for altercation

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel, has stated reasons he had an altercation with Antonio Conte his counterpart at Tottenham Hotspur after both teams ended in a  2-2 stalemate.

The two men almost went physical after Emile Hojbjerg equalized for Spurs, canceling out Kalidou Koulibaly’s opener.

After the game, Tuchel held onto Conte’s hand firmly and muttered swear words, with both managers needing to be separated.

Tuchel has now claimed he wanted the Italian to look into his eyes as they shook hands.

“He was happy when they equalized and it got a bit heated but nothing big. We both got a red card? It wasn’t necessary. But a lot of things were not necessary. Another poor decision from the referee today.

“It’s emotional. It’s the Premier League, it’s the game. You love it, no? We love it. We are emotional coaches,” Tuchel said.

Meanwhile, Conte on his part wrote on Instagram that he would have tripped Tuchel

His post reads  “Lucky I didn’t see you… Making your trip over would have been well deserved.”

  • Tottenham players who could leave this summer to fund Conte’s transfer rebuild

Tottenham players who could leave this summer to fund Conte’s transfer rebuild

There is expected to be plenty of movement in and out of the doors at Tottenham Hotspur this summer in order to fund an Antonio Conte transfer rebuild.

Emerson Royal, Steven Bergwijn and perhaps Lucas Moura could consider their Spurs futures this summer.

Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici want to rebuild Tottenham Hotspur this summer but that will require plenty of movement out of the club.

There are numerous players still on the books at Spurs who will need to be moved on to free up extra funds and space in the squad and others who will want to leave to become regular starters elsewhere.

As always there will also be unexpected bids for players that could result in departures that had not previously been on the table.

Here are 11 players that could head out of the exit door this summer:

    Tanguy Ndombele

It’s not rocket science to work out that if Conte is the manager of Tottenham next season then Tanguy Ndombele is highly unlikely to be starting matches for the club. The problem for Spurs will be getting the sort of money they want for their club record signing, who has not exactly lit up Lyon since returning to the French league and currently has an injury.

There is an option for Lyon to buy Ndombele for a fee not too far off what Spurs paid them back in the summer of 2019 and that seems unlikely at this point. It may be that the Frenchman needs to be loaned out again somewhere in order to raise his value for a permanent move in a year’s time.

    Giovani Lo Celso

Lo Celso is in a similar boat to Ndombele in that Conte clearly does not see a place for him in his squad, although the Argentine’s performances in the Champions League for Villarreal could see him retain a large portion of his value.

Interestingly Lo Celso does fit Conte’s system – particularly a 3-5-2 – and his style of football, but it seems as if Tottenham’s second most expensive signing in their history will be following the most expensive one in playing elsewhere next season.

    Pierluigi Gollini

The chances of Spurs making Pierluigi Gollini’s loan signing from Atalanta permanent looks to be decreasing by the month, particularly with the club expected to win the race to sign West Brom and England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer.

Paratici and Nuno Espirito Santo expected Gollini to replace Hugo Lloris but the 10 appearances the Italian has made this season for Spurs, coupled with Lloris’ new contract, have shown that’s not likely to be the case. Paratici may now believe that with Johnstone a free agent, the £11million or so it would cost to bring in Gollini could perhaps be put elsewhere in the transfer window.

    Harry Winks

Winks is likely to want to move on this summer in search of regular starts, particularly if he wants to reignite any faint chance of making England’s World Cup squad. Conte likes Winks and continually says he can “count on him”, but ultimately that’s not resulted in many more starts.

Winks has started just nine Premier League matches this season and Spurs are unlikely to stand in his way with three central defensive midfielders already in the squad.

    Joe Rodon

Another who Conte has raved about but has not actually played much. Rodon needs to leave for regular football next season, particularly with Spurs looking to sign another central defender this summer, to provide more competition on the left of the back three.

“To see the performance of Joe and also Steven Bergwijn, it means maybe we’re doing a great job with them. Joe is not playing many games with us but despite this he was fit,” Conte told football.london this month after the international break. “Joe is a good player but a really, really great man. He had broken two ribs, not one. He did every training session.

“He was always available and I know very well the pain you feel when you break a rib. It means you’re a great man. Joe is improving a lot, he has to continue in this way, work hard and have this satisfaction. I repeat to play this way with Wales in an important game in World Cup qualification, it means you’re working hard and well.”

Spurs’ best plan would be to loan out the Welshman, who has three years left on his contract, to a Premier League club next season because his value is likely to shoot up with a full season of starts under his belt in the top flight, a division he is more than capable of excelling in.

    Emerson Royal

If Conte is the man at the helm next season then it could be a quick turnaround for Emerson Royal with a move out of north London within a year because he just does not fit the Italian’s system.

Bought as a functional, solid right-back for Espirito Santo’s back four, the Brazilian does not fit the wing-back role comfortably, without the ability to attack like a winger and get crosses into the opposition box. He has just one assist to his name from 39 appearances this season but his value would have retained as a right-back if Spurs wanted to sell him back to a club in Spain.

At just 23, he could yet improve but Paratici may see more value in simply signing a natural wing-back.

Matt Doherty’s form, his comfort as a wing-back and his recent injury which will see him return in pre-season may just have seen him become the player likely to remain at the club in the role with a new right wing-back being sought to join him.

    Sergio Reguilon

The situation with Sergio Reguilon is similar to that of Emerson in that he also is more of a full-back than a wing-back and is yet to fully show the ability to step into a role he admits he has little experience of.

The 25-year-old at least has two goals and three assists to his name this season and he could yet adapt to the wing-back requirements. However, it does feel like Conte prefers Ryan Sessegnon in the role and his plentiful praise for the younger player suggests he sees a long-term star in the making.

Real Madrid have their second and final option to re-sign Reguilon this summer for a fee of what is believed to be near £43million, although that price could be a steep one for a player who has mostly been out of the Spain squad in the past season.

    Steven Bergwijn

Much like Rodon and Winks, for Steven Bergwijn next season will be about playing regular football.

Another who Conte raves about, with the Spurs boss saying this month: “We’re talking about a player of great quality, great potential. He’s different to the other players in the squad, good one vs one. When the space is tight, he’s good at beating the man and scoring. Steven has great space for improvement, he has to try to give continuity and to continue to work in the way that he’s doing.

“For us, he’s an important player, the type who if he starts or comes in, he can change the situation, because of a specific characteristic of superiority. Create chances for himself or the other. He has to continue to believe in himself more. He’s a young player with great space for improvement. He has to continue to work, to improve with and without the ball. To help the team at every moment because football is a team game and you have to be ready at every moment to help the team with or without the ball.”

However, Ajax really wanted Bergwijn and tried to sign him in the summer. With just four Premier League starts to his name and substitute appearances for often just a couple of minutes at a time, the Dutchman is unlikely to be desperate to stay next season, despite his five goals and two assists, particularly as he will want to play in the World Cup he helped his country reach.

    Jack Clarke

The 21-year-old winger has only one year left on his contract at Tottenham and it just doesn’t seem as if he is going to become a Spurs regular.

Clarke has so far had loans back to Leeds, QPR, Stoke and now Sunderland and either another loan with a small contract extension will happen in order to raise interest in him for a later permanent move or Spurs will look to offload the £9m signing from Leeds this summer if the interest is there.

    Lucas Moura

This could fall into the unexpected exit category as Conte has labelled Lucas Moura as an important player in his squad.

The Brazilian though is not a first choice starter since the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski and the likelihood is that more attacking players will arrive this summer.

Lucas has contributed some big moments for the club and has the pace to change matches, but Paratici and Conte could feel that with him turning 30 this summer and having provided just 19 goals and 15 assists in 133 Premier League games in more than four years for the club, any sizeable offer for his services could be tempting.

    Cameron Carter-Vickers

The 24-year-old has been having a great season away from Tottenham with Celtic, playing 40 matches, lifting the Scottish League Cup and likely the league title as well as becoming a hero for the Glaswegian side with the winning goal in an Old Firm Derby this month.

His performances have been lauded and Celtic are expected to take the option to sign him permanently from Spurs for £6million with future add-ons potentially taking the fee up to £10million eventually. Premier League clubs are also monitoring his situation after a big campaign in Scotland.

Tottenham go fourth with win at Sheffield United

Tottenham Hotspur have moved back into the top four in the 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL), thanks to a 3-1 win at bottom side Sheffield United on Sunday.

Serge Aurier, Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele, with a stunning third goal secured victory for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Spurs are now level with third-placed Liverpool, though the champions can go top if they beat leaders Manchester United later Sunday.

Sheffield United remain bottom with just five points from 19 games, 11 points from safety at the halfway point in the season.

  • Sissoko, Son fire Tottenham into League Cup final

Sissoko, Son fire Tottenham into League Cup final

Tottenham Hotspur reached the League Cup final after goals from Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min sank Championship side Brentford 2-0 on Tuesday.

The victory helped Spurs to set up a clash with Manchester United or Manchester City in April’s showpiece.

Fellow London side Brentford, playing in their first semi-final in a major cup competition, started brightly in the match.

But they fell behind in the 12th minute when unmarked French midfielder Sissoko headed in a fine Sergio Reguilon cross from the left.

The visitors, who had beaten four top-flight teams on their way to the semi-finals, thought they had drawn level after the break when striker Ivan Toney headed home.

But the goal was disallowed for a very tight offside, which was spotted by VAR.

Toney’s grounded knee was ruled to be offside before he rose to head in from close range after Ethan Pinnock nodded a cross back across the face of goal.

Jose Mourinho’s Spurs side soon responded to that let-off.

South Korean forward Son collected a fine pass from Tanguy Ndombele and burst goalwards before slotting past goalkeeper David Raya to make it 2-0 after 70 minutes.

League second tier side Brentford’s disappointment was compounded when Josh Dasilva was sent off six minutes from time for an over-the-top challenge on Tottenham’s Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Dane was immediately substituted with blood streaming down his shin.

Spurs have not won a major trophy since their League Cup triumph over Chelsea in 2008.

But this will be their ninth appearance in the final of the competition, which they have won four times.

The showpiece match will be held at Wembley on April 25, after the Football League moved the date back from February to increase the chances of fans being able to attend.

Manchester United host city rivals Manchester City in the other semi-final at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

  • Tottenham Hotspur secure £175m loan from Bank of England

Tottenham Hotspur secure £175m loan from Bank of England

English football club, Tottenham Hotspur, have secured a £175 million loan from the Bank of England to aid their finances during the coronavirus crisis.

Spurs, as the club is popularly called, are set to miss £200 million of revenue up to June 2021 due to the remainder of league matches to be played behind closed door at their 62,303-capacity stadium and with other events cancelled.

However, the club is eligible for a COVID-19 Corporate Financing Facility, repayable with a 0.5 percent interest rate.

The Covid Corporate Financing Facility (CCFF, the Facility) was instituted by the UK government to provide funding to businesses by purchasing commercial paper of up to one-year maturity, issued by firms making a material contribution to the UK economy.

It will help businesses across a range of sectors to pay wages and suppliers, even while experiencing severe disruption to cashflows.

The facility will offer financing on terms comparable to those prevailing in markets in the period before the COVID-19 economic shock, and is open to firms that demonstrate that they were in sound financial health prior to the shock.

Speaking on this, Chairman of the football outfit, Mr Daniel Levy, said, “We have always run this club on a self-sustaining commercial basis.”

Spurs, who have played in the Champions League for the last four seasons, are currently eighth in the Premier League – seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea – with nine matches remaining.

“I said as early as 18 March that, in all my 20 years at the club, there have been many hurdles along the way but none of this magnitude – the COVID-19 pandemic has shown itself to be the most serious of them all.

“It is imperative that we now all work together – scientists, technologists, the government and the live events sector – to find a safe way to bring spectators back to sport and entertainment venues.

“Collectively we have the ability to support the development of new technologies to make this possible and to once again experience the passion of fans at live events,” Mr Levy added.

The 2019/20 Premier League season will resume on June 17 after actions in the top-flight were suspended in early March, with all sporting activities put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
