ECL: Super Eagles target Ibrahim excited with team’s win over Tottenham

Abbas Ibrahim of Pacos de Ferreira in the Portuguese Primeira Liga says his club’s win over highly rated Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa Conference League (ECL) was due to team hard work.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Portuguese side pipped Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the first leg play-off of the newly introduced ECL tie on Thursday in Portugal.

An highly elated Ibrahim told NAN from his base in Portugal that the win was a morale booster for the team as the team prepares for the return leg next week.

“I am happy with the win over Tottenham Hotspur. I think this will spur us even better for the second leg because the job is not yet completed.

“Our aim is to play in the group stage of this new competition (ECL) and we have been working hard towards that,” he said.

The 23-year-old diminutive midfielder who just signed a contract extension with his club till the summer of 2024 described the Portuguese Primeira Liga as very competitive.

Ibrahim, who was part of Nigeria’s U-13 and U-15 squads years ago joined the U-19 of Pacos de Ferreira in 2016, then progressed to the B Team two years later and subsequently made his first team debut a year later.

He has been on two consecutive loan spells with USC Paredes and FC Arouca and gradually forced his way to the first team last season with 11 appearances, three starts and one man of the match award.

Pacos de Ferreira finished 5th last season to qualify for the inaugural Europa Conference League this season.

The team will play Tottenham Hotspur next week Thursday in the return leg of the ECL for a place in the group stage of the competition.

Ibrahim’s eye catching displays towards the end of last season had led to call for an invitation to the Super Eagles.

Tottenham striker Son Heung-min does not want to play anywhere else.

The South Korean recently penned a new deal keeping him at the club until 2025.

Harry Kane has expressed his desire to leave Spurs this summer, but after scoring the winner against Manchester City on Sunday, Son has no such reservations.

When asked by Sky Sports if he would like to spend a decade at the club, Son replied: “Yes, if I can stay for another four years and football is never promised, so let’s see. That’s why I signed because I don’t want to move again somewhere else.

“I could be here for 10 years or more than 10 years, you never know what’s going to happen in the future, but I try to be focused every day, I try to improve every day and every single season. I think that the mindset is more important than the testimonial after 10 years.”

Son Heung-min’s superb strike proved the winner as a Tottenham side without Harry Kane beat Premier League champions Manchester City.

Kane was absent from the Spurs squad amid transfer speculation over a potential move to City.

But without him, Spurs marked new boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s first match in charge with a home victory in front of a full crowd, as Son cut inside from the right before placing the ball into the bottom corner.

Jack Grealish, who signed for a record £100m fee from Aston Villa, made his City debut but was unable to inspire a comeback.

Team-mates Joao Cancelo and Fernandinho came close in the first half, while Son also had a shot deflected inches wide.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane says he has “never refused to train” and will return to the club on Saturday as planned.

Kane, who has been on an extended holiday after Euro 2020, did not turn up as scheduled on Monday for his coronavirus tests.

Manchester City are keen to sign the England captain.

The 28-year-old believes he has a gentleman’s agreement with chairman Daniel Levy to leave Spurs this summer.

He says that he has been “hurt” by comments this week that questioned his professionalism.

“While I won’t go into the specifics of the situation, I want to clarify that I would never, and have never, refused to train. I will be returning to the club tomorrow as planned,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardise the relationship I have with the fans who have given me such unwavering support during my time with the club. This has always been the case as it is today.”

Tottenham: Harry Kane goes AWOL until transfer demand accepted

Harry Kane is prepared to stay away from Tottenham preseason training until his transfer demand is accepted.

The Athletic reports he has adopted the stance that he won’t train again.

The striker, 28, will apparently refuse to train or play again unless a move is sanctioned.

Tottenham officials are said to be furious with Kane, and apparently have frustrations with him stemming from last year.

Kane wanted to leave last summer when Manchester City first came calling for his signature.

Various reports claim the centre-forward believes he has made a gentleman’s agreement with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy allowing him to leave this summer if things on the pitch didn’t improve.

Carragher has labelled Kane’s alleged decision to skip Tottenham training “wrong” and says he fears the England international will “ruin his name”.

Kane has been linked with a sensational £100million-plus transfer to Manchester Citythis summer but time is running out and Pep Guardiola’s side are yet to make a bid.

Rio Ferdinand tweeted: “I’m not saying that Harry Kane and his tactics to leave are wrong (if we are to believe what’s being said). Harry wants trophies and he ain’t getting any younger.”

Carragher responded: “I disagree, it is wrong not to turn up for training.

“We all know he wants to go and can totally understand why. But Harry should not ruin his name or relationship with the supporters who idolise him just to get the move. Spurs will always be HIS club.”

Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini has explained his decision to join Tottenham.

The Italy cap is in London to sign on-loan with Spurs.

“I’m very happy. Obviously, it was difficult to leave a place that had been like a second home and family. I thank Bergamo, because I felt loved here and what we did will remain in the club’s history, but this is a new experience,” said Gollini.

“I am very happy and grateful to Tottenham for this great opportunity. Hugo Lloris is world champion, so it is prestigious and an honor for me to play with him.

“The best offer came from Tottenham, but in all honesty it was also difficult for me to wear a shirt that is not Atalanta’s.

I’ve proved people wrong my whole career – Kane

Tottenham striker Harry Kane says he never lost confidence during his goal drought at Euro 2020.

The striker went goalless in England’s three group stage games, but has since scored three times in the round of 16 and quarter-finals.

“I have kind of had to do that my whole career, since I was a kid,” Kane told BBC Radio 5 Live of proving people wrong.

“I’ve had to prove people wrong to get to where I am now. I have full belief in who I am as a player and what I can do on the pitch, what I do to help the team.

“It’s not so much about proving other people wrong. It’s about proving to myself again that I am as good as I can be, I can score at any level, I’ve done it at any stage.

“When you go three or four games without scoring, you want to score and put that to bed and at a major tournament it gets heightened even more. But the fact that I have so much self-belief in myself and my team, I don’t really let that stuff affect me.

“Of course when you score in a big game, it is natural the emotions come out and you feel free and a lot of people then say it kick-starts you to score a couple in the quarter-final.

“Whether I score or don’t score I always feel I am ready for the next opportunity. It’s great that I am scoring now and obviously a big semi-final to come but I’ll be the same player if I scored or didn’t score.
