Tottenham caretaker coach to players: Don’t call me boss

Tottenham caretaker boss Ryan Mason admits he doesn’t want to be called ‘gaffer’.

Mason, 29, stressed to the squad — with many having been former team-mates — that he wants to keep things informal.

He said: “One of the first things I said to them was that I do not expect to be called ‘gaffer’ or ‘boss’.

“Call me what you have been calling me for the last five or ten years — or however long I have known you.

“The most important thing for me is respect. You can call me what you want but if you don’t respect me then it is not good. The respect is there from everyone.

“Not just the players but the groundsman, the kitmen, everyone. I have a good relationship with everyone.”

Mourinho’s experience will stay for rest of my career – Kane

Tottenham striker Harry Kane says working with Jose Mourinho will stay with him for the rest of his career.

The Portuguese was sacked by Spurs last week.

Mourinho, who promised to take Kane “universal” during a meeting in the manager’s office shortly after his appointment in November 2019, allowed the England captain a free role and he has flourished when dropping deep.

“He is a fantastic manager,” Kane told the London Evening Standard after last night’s London Football Awards, where he was named Premier League Player of the Year.

“He has managed the biggest players at the biggest clubs in the world. He came in with a real understanding of what he wanted. We had good conversations early on and that continued. I have always liked to drop deep, but the biggest change was to ensure people were running in behind if I was dropping deep.

“We just had a good relationship. I feel like my game has been evolving over the last three or four years anyway and it was just a good match-up. It was a shame that we could not go on and do better things or win any trophies, but I will take the experience I had with him for the rest of my career.”

Mourinho never accepted at Tottenham – Sheringham

Tottenham hero Teddy Sheringham admits he wasn’t surprised by the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

While some were stunned at the timing of Mourinho’s exit, Sheringham has said the sacking wasn’t a shock.

Sheringham told Gambling.com: “I wasn’t surprised by the decision, especially when you hear the little murmurs from behind the scenes suggesting it was more about money, that if they got into Europe they would find it harder to sack him because it would cost them even more money.

“But ultimately they’ve made the decision because they’ve felt he’s not the man to take Spurs forward. I’m not surprised by the situation, there’s been a lot of grumblings from the Tottenham fans.

“For a manager who has won so much, you would have thought he’d have gotten applauded into the club when he first came, but that was never the case. It just never felt like the right fit.

“There was a little spell where Jose’s light was shining again but it soon dimmed out and the Spurs fans were quite understanding that it wasn’t working.”

Man City clinch fourth consecutive Carabao Cup title

Manchester City won the League Cup for a record fourth time in succession with a deserved victory over a disappointing Tottenham Hotspur side at Wembley.

City defender Aymeric Laporte, arguably fortunate to be on the pitch after escaping a yellow card in the first half before being cautioned after the break, rose above Spurs substitute Moussa Sissoko to head home Kevin de Bruyne’s free-kick eight minutes from time.

It was reward for City creating a host of chances and dominating Spurs, who did not benefit from any sort of positive reaction after sacking manager Jose Mourinho on Monday and replacing him with caretaker Ryan Mason.

The final was played in front of 8,000 supporters, including 2,000 from each club – and it was a delight to hear noise inside Wembley’s vast arena once more.

No-one here happy to see Mourinho go – Tottenham defender

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has denied the players were glad to see the back of Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese boss was suddenly sacked on Monday – just six days before this afternoon’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City – leaving many questioning if a divided dressing room was to blame.

The Spurs central defender, 32, said: “It was a strange week. For us, it was the same surprise as for everyone else.

“Of course, there was a little disappointment after the Everton game but, for sure, everyone was fighting and doing the best they could to change things around with Mourinho.

“No one was happy, not at all. We have to respect his career, we have to respect how good he is. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the results together we wanted.”

Due to the unexpectedly swift axe, there was no chance to say a proper goodbye.

“We didn’t have a moment to chat, or even (say) a thank you,” explained Alderweireld, “Maybe the results didn’t go right but 100 per cent he made everyone better.”

Tottenham chief already has next manager lined up – Redknapp

Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp believes chairman Daniel Levy had already sounded out the next manager before he sacked Jose Mourinho.

Redknapp believes it will be Brendan Rodgers, if Spurs can persuade him to quit Leicester, or Belgium manager Roberto Martinez.

“I would think I would have more chance than (Maurizio) Sarri,” Redknapp said. “Where would he come into it?

“Who do I see? I see Brendan Rodgers or Roberto Martinez. I think he would have a big chance. And they tried to get Brendan when I left. It is whether he wants it.”

Redknapp also said: “Tottenham have already got somebody. They will have done a deal with somebody already. I know how they work.

“When I went, they had already spoken to two or three people. I knew that and I had heard that.

Former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has again been linked with Tottenham.

The Daily Mail says the Italian is tipped to become the new Tottenham boss after the club reportedly made contact.

Sarri is still under contract with Juventus until 2022, but the Italian club can terminate his deal one year early by paying a fee by the end of April.

The report also states that the 62-year-old is eager to return to coaching after a year off. The manage

Mourinho spoke to Tottenham players for four hours after sack

Former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho met with his players for four hours after his dismissal on Monday.

The Telegraph says Mourinho’s relationship with some members of the squad hit an all-time low following Spurs’ Europa League exit.

Chairman Daniel Levy relieved Mourinho of his duties on Monday, just six days before the Carabao Cup final, with Ryan Mason being appointed interim head coach.

Spurs were sat seventh in the Premier League when Mourinho was dismissed and crashed out of the Europa League last month, with Dinamo Zagreb overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit to win the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

Following a two-hour meeting with club chiefs on Monday where he was informed that he would be dismissed, Mourinho is said to have held a series of discussions with the players where he told them ‘home truths’ about their recent performances.

Tottenham winger says goodbye ahead of Italy move

Tottenham winger Eric Lamela is ready to say his goodbyes at the club.

The 29-year-old has been with the London club since 2013, when he signed from Roma as a Gareth Bale replacement.

Lamela has been dogged by injury issues throughout his time at the club, and has not made 20 league starts in a season since 2015-2016.

And according to Area Napoli, he is ready to leave Spurs this summer and wants a return to Italy.

Napoli may be the club where Lamela wants to play, but the report claims the Naples club may focus their attention on homegrown players instead.

Roma and AC Milan have also been linked with the Argentine.

Axed Tottenham manager on Real Madrid shortlist

Axed Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is being linked with a return to Real Madrid.

Mourinho was axed on Monday on the eve of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City this week.

Real president Florentino Perez remains a fan of Mourinho and maintains regular contact.

And with doubts over Zinedine Zidane fulfilling the final year of his Real contract, the Athletic reports Florentino has Mourinho on top of his shortlist of replacements.

Just Monday, Florentino said: “Zidane is the best coach we have ever had. He’s a legend. He has a personality that is almost like mine, he can’t stand press conferences. He doesn’t say anything, he’s happy… As he says, you never know. He has a contract in force.”
