Liverpool get late goal to beat Tottenham 2-1 in Premier League

Roberto Firmino headed a 90th-minute winner as champions Liverpool edged out title challengers Tottenham to climb top of the Premier League with a 2-1 victory at Anfield.

Firmino escaped the clutches of Toby Alderweireld in the final minute of normal time to divert Andy Robertson’s pin-point corner into the top corner with a bullet header that left Hugo Lloris with no chance.

The dramatic finale came just as Spurs looked to have secured a rare point at Anfield, with Heung-Min Son’s clinical strike on the counter cancelling out Mohamed Salah’s deflected opener in the first half.

Spurs had opportunities to strengthen their growing title credentials and end Liverpool’s formidable home league record – which now reads 66 games unbeaten – but Steven Bergwijn hit the post and Harry Kane squandered a gilt-edged heading opportunity in the second half as their Anfield woes continued.

Tottenham will ‘try to win’ at Liverpool – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho says Tottenham will be going to Anfield to beat Liverpool on Wednesday.

The Portuguese has employed a pragmatic approach when coming up against the bigger English clubs this season.

It has proved an effective strategy as Spurs currently lead Liverpool on goal difference at the top of the Premier League table.

The Reds have not lost at Anfield in a record 64-game stretch.

But Mourinho insists Spurs have no intention of settling for a point on Merseyside.

  • Let’s be real, Alli is unhappy – Mourinho

Let’s be real, Alli is unhappy – Mourinho

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho admits Dele Alli is unhappy after being left on the bench for their 2-0 Europa League win over Royal Antwerp.

Alli disappeared down the tunnel during the game, though did return to the bench in his non-playing kit and was the only unused substitute not to take part in a post-match warm-down.

Mourinho also said Alli had his blessing to go to the dressing room but added: “Yep, but let’s not run away from the reality.

“A player that is on the bench and then realises that he’s not one of the five players (coming on) of course is not a happy player, and I wouldn’t expect him to be happy.

“But every player that is on the bench or every player that leaves the pitch in cold weather, with me, they can go to the dressing room and I even prefer if that happens.”

I studied Mourinho during Tottenham’s documentary – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits he studied last season’s Tottenham documentary involving Jose Mourinho.

Arteta admitted the documentary demonstrated to him why Mourinho has been so successful throughout his career.

He said:”Very interesting. It is great to see the inside of other football clubs, other ideas, other coaches, other organisations.

“I like to see that – I do that with other sports as well because there are a lot of things you can take, and as well a manager like Mourinho that has been in many different countries, in all of them he has been successful so there is a why to that.

“There are some important moments in that documentary when you can pick some relevant things of why he is getting the success that he is getting.”

Tottenham beat Arsenal to go top of Premier League

Tottenham returned to the top of the Premier League table with a comfortable victory over arch-rivals Arsenal as Harry Kane became the north London derby’s highest goalscorer.

The deadly double act of Kane and Son Heung-min were at the heart of another impressive Spurs win and both were on the scoresheet as Spurs took control of the game by the interval.

Spurs fans were back inside their vast stadium for the first time in 277 days and were celebrating after only 13 minutes when Son took Kane’s pass, advancing on the retreating Arsenal defence before curling a magnificent right-foot finish beyond diving Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno from 25 yards.

Arsenal dominated possession in the first half but it was Spurs who had the ruthless, clinical edge as they caught the Gunners on the break in stoppage time, Son repaying the compliment by playing in Kane for an unstoppable finish off the underside of the crossbar for his 11th north London derby goal and the 250th of his career for clubs and country.

Mikel Arteta’s side, who lost Thomas Partey to injury right on half-time, showed a little more threat after the break but Spurs closed out the win with relative ease to return to the Premier League summit.

We didn’t have money for Arsenal midfielder Willian – Mourinho

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho insists he never considered signing Willian before he joined Arsenal.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s North London derby, Mourinho revealed Spurs didn’t have the money to enter a bidding war with Arsenal for the former Chelsea star.

“We don’t have money for Willian,” he said.

“We cannot pay the wages that he gets at Arsenal so I didn’t want to waste our time because we cannot pay these wages.

“He is still dangerous, he is still one of the best players in the Premier League. Apart from that, he is a good friend. I have nothing to hide in relation to that.

“We keep in touch, we keep in contact, we call each other. We wish good things to each other. He is my friend and of course he is a very good player.”

  • I’ve still got 15-20 years left – Mourinho

I’ve still got 15-20 years left – Mourinho

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho believes he has roughly 10 to 15 years left in the sport.

Mourinho is 57 and is one of the most successful coaches in modern history.

He has won trophies at FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

He is enjoying his time at Spurs, and admits he can see himself being a manager for a long time to come.

“There is a difference between success and a successful career,” Mourinho told reporters.

“I always believe that there is a huge difference. Success is a moment. Success can be related with your talent, but can be just the fact you are in a certain place in the right moment, in the right time.

“Another thing is a successful career, which is based on year after year after year, I always wanted that kind of career. It’s part of my DNA. I know that people probably don’t think this about myself but I consider myself a very humble person, I always try to learn, I always try to be better and this is a kind of job where experience only can make us better. I really believe today I’m much better than I was 10 or 20 years ago.

“If I love what I do, if I feel fresh, it’s motivation, it’s part of my DNA, if I change probably a little bit of my profile – and at this moment I think much more about others than myself – I always like to take players into a different dimension.

“I’m a 57-year-old, very young in relation to my job, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I have 10-15 years ahead of me.”

Let’s turn around season with Tottenham win – Aubameyang tells Arsenal

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hopes to rally the troops and get a big win at the weekend against Tottenham.

The Gunners know they must turn around their Premier League season quickly.

They have lost five of ten matches in the league, and it is their worst start to the season in 39 years.

The Gabon striker wrote in Arsenal’s matchday programme: “I can’t wait for the derby on Sunday.

“I think this is the game that we have to make into a turning point for us this season.

“There’s nothing better than this game to give you that opportunity to turn things around.

“We have to understand that if we can win this game then everyone will change their mindset.

“A big result in the derby can really lift the players, the fans – everyone.

“We know it will be a tough game, they are playing well at the moment to tell the truth but we have to take care of our game, how we want to play the game, and make it all about us.

“We are waiting for this game – we need to give everything to get the win and change our situation.”

EPL: Tottenham back on top after Chelsea draw

Tottenham returned to the top of the Premier League despite being held by Chelsea in a highly-competitive yet goalless London stalemate.

The eagerly-anticipated fixture between two teams in excellent form failed to produce a goal as both sides cancelled each other out at Stamford Bridge.

Edouard Mendy kept out Serge Aurier’s ferocious strike while Steven Bergwijn scooped another Spurs chance over the bar.

Chelsea were looking to celebrate Roman Abramovich’s 1,000th game as club owner with victory over a Spurs team managed by their former boss Jose Mourinho.

The Blues struggled to carve out clear-cut chances although Hugo Lloris produced a great late save to deny Mason Mount.

Spurs, replaced at the top by Liverpool on Saturday, return to the summit, level on 21 points with the Reds but with a superior goal difference.

Chelsea are two points behind in third spot.

  • Beat Tottenham for Abramovich, Lampard tells Chelsea players

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard wants to beat Tottenham for club owner Roman Abramovich.

Lampard paid tribute to Abramovich as the Russian billionaire prepares for his 1,000th game as owner of Chelsea.

“As a manager and a player who was involved in a lot of those games I can give him nothing but a huge thank you,” said Lampard, who returned last year as head coach.

“Nothing we have achieved in the Roman Abramovich era could have been achieved without him or his support.

“Firstly, a financial input but also the development of the training ground and also the love and time put into the academy. And the trophies we have been able to win have been made possible because of him.

“We are thankful and our end of the bargain is to remain successful on the pitch.

“The special message from us will be to go out and win the game. That will be the best message back to Roman for a very special landmark.”
