Joe Hart signing helps me sleep better – Mourinho

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho says Joe Hart’s arrival will help him sleep better.

Hart has arrived as Michel Vorm was allowed to come off contract this summer.

And Mourinho explained: “Michel (Vorm)… I don’t know if he was in the last year of his career, but he was close to it, and to bring in Joe, 75 caps for England, lots of experience, that’s great protection for us to have these three goalkeepers, all of them internationals, all of them good goalkeepers.

“You can sleep well because you know any injury, illness, any problems, we have three goalkeepers and with some crazy fixtures that are waiting for us, playing all the competitions, starting the Carabao Cup immediately at the same time as Europa League and Premier League, even goalkeepers cannot play every match, so it’s very, very good business for us.”

Tottenham signs new midfielder for £20m

Tottenham on Tuesday announced the signing of midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Denmark international underwent his medicals at the club’s training ground on Monday.

He penned a five-year deal with Jose Mourinho’s side for a fee of £20million.

Hojbjerg will wear the No 5 shirt vacated by Jan Vertonghen who left the club at the end of the season.

After completing his move, Hojbjerg told Tottenham’s official website: ‘What was very important to me is I wanted to play in a club where I could see myself for many years. Tottenham was the one. I’m very proud, very happy, excited.

‘I think there’s a fantastic future ahead for the Club and I wanted so much to be a part of that.’

He also bade his former club goodbye via Twitter.

EPL: Jan Vertonghen confirms exit from Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen on Monday in London confirmed his departure from the English Premier League (EPL) club after eight years.

This has come in view of the Belgian international’s contract expiration at the end of the 2019/2020 EPL season.

The defender, who has made 315 appearances for Spurs in all competitions since arriving from Ajax Amsterdam in 2012, has struggled for playing time this season under Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho.

“So, my time at the club comes to an end. A sad day for many reasons,” Vertonghen, 33, wrote in an emotional message on Twitter.

“I will miss the friends I’ve made here, the staff that make the club run, playing at the amazing new stadium, and of course you (the) fans.

“Thank you for all the support over the years. You’ve been amazing. We had many unbelievable memories. But for now, it’s goodbye.”

Tottenham captain Harry Kane had earlier wished Vertonghen and 36-year-old Dutch goalkeeper Michel Vorm, who is also out of contract, well in the next chapter of their careers.

“Wish nothing but the best for @JanVertonghen and @Vorm_Official with whatever is next for them,” Kane said on Twitter shortly after a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

“Been a pleasure sharing a dressing room and playing with them both.”

Midfielder Harry Winks posted a picture with the duo on Instagram, adding: “Gonna miss these two.

“Been a huge part of my career since I came through the academy both on and off the pitch. All the best in your next chapters, boys.”

  • Brother of Tottenham’s Aurier shot dead in France

Brother of Tottenham’s Aurier shot dead in France

The brother of Tottenham Hotspur’s Cote d’Ivoire defender Serge Aurier has been shot dead in France, the English Premier League (EPL) club said on Monday.

The brother, Christopher Aurier, was shot at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning in the southern French city of Toulouse, according to La Depeche, a French media outlet.

The suspected gunman fled the scene and is being sought by police, according to a French police source.

Serge Aurier, who is 27, joined Spurs in 2017 from French club Paris St-Germain (PSG).

In a message posted on Twitter, Tottenham said: “Everybody at the club sends their sincerest condolences to Serge and his family. Our thoughts are with them all.”

  • Referees are now in the office, not pitch – Mourinho

Referees are now in the office, not pitch – Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho on Thursday questioned the point of having referees on the pitch, saying VAR was bad for the game.

His comments came after his side were victims of a controversially disallowed equaliser in a 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United in the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL).

Harry Kane thought he had levelled for Spurs almost immediately after Sander Berge had given the hosts the lead in their EPL clash at Bramall Lane.

But VAR officials at their bunker in Stockley Park ruled that Lucas Moura had used his arm in the build-up.

This was in spite of the Brazilian being shoved over and then having the ball booted against him while sliding headlong on the turf.

A pundit, Jamie Redknapp, described the decision as one of the worst he had seen and called for common sense.

Mourinho looked furious at the time but the Portuguese coach refused to turn his ire on referee Chris Kavanagh.

“I think the referee should always be the man on the pitch and the man in the office should support and assist,” Mourinho said of the incident. “But that’s not the way that it is.

“Especially a referee who’s not very good on the pitch, we can’t expect him to be very good in the office. `

“We’re going into a direction that is very bad for a game which was the game that everyone fell in love with.

“Normally I am an emotional guy on the bench. But, in this moment, I never complain with the man with the whistle because he’s not the referee anymore.

“I used to go to the fourth (official). But the man on the pitch is the assistant referee and today the man and the lady with the flag, (who) used to be the assistant referees, are now assistant’s assistant. The ref is in the office.”

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has been a critic of VAR and felt wronged when his side had a goal ruled out in their 1-1 draw at Tottenham in November.

    He felt Mourinho’s angst.

“I’ve got a back catalogue of decisions that have gone against us. We’re the unofficial champs of Europe with decisions against us,” he said. “I think it’s a nonsense rule.

“I totally understand the frustration of their (Tottenham’s) manager and players. We’ve had the rub of the green tonight on that one, well overdue. But we’ll take it.”

Mourinho, whose side slipped to ninth, nine points adrift of the top four, questioned his side’s reaction to the decision to chalk off Kane’s goal.

“We have to do better, we have to be mentally stronger to cope with what happened during the game,” he said.

“It was a kick in the teeth but with 50 minutes to go, we have to be stronger. I don’t think we were strong enough mentally.”

  • Pochettino’s son signs new deal at Tottenham

Maurizio Pochettino, son of former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino, has signed a new contract at the English Premier League (EPL) club.

Winger Maurizio, whose current deal was due to expire on Tuesday, announced the contract extension in a social media post on Monday.

The Instagram post showed the 19-year-old sharing a photo with his father along with the caption “Looking forwards to the new season.”

Neither the club nor Maurizio said how long the new deal would last for.

However, sports data website transfermarkt said it would last until 2022.

Maurizio joined the north London club’s academy in 2017 but is yet to make a senior appearance.

His father Pochettino was sacked by Spurs in November after more than five years in charge and was replaced by Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho.

Spurs are seventh in the league standings with 45 points, nine points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

  • Transfer: Mourinho eyeing Chelsea striker Giroud

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is eyeing Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud.

Giroud signed a new deal last month, but could still move on this summer after Chelsea’s swoop for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

The Daily Express says Spurs manager Mourinho remains a fan of the former Arsenal centre forward he tried to sign in January – but Chelsea would be reluctant to sell to their rivals.

Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte is thought also still keen on a deal.

Giroud, 33, has stated that he could have left Chelsea in January, but stayed after being promised games by manager Frank Lampard, and getting them before the COVID-19 crisis brought football to a halt.

But even though the Frenchman only signed his new £110,000 a week deal last month, there is still speculation that he could be sold on – because now Chelsea can command a fee of around £7m.

  • Mourinho fears Coutinho may upset locker room at Tottenham

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has been forced to rethink their push for Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho is available for around £80million or a £9m season-long loan but he would want more than the £200,000-a-week Spurs pay their top-bracket stars including Harry Kane.

That would break Tottenham’s wage ceiling.

Mundo Deportivo says Mourinho is not prepared to do that and upset the rest of his stars, who would demand pay hikes.

Spurs might have to fork out around £9m for next season to take the 27-year-old Brazilian.

Although that would be a figure Spurs bean counters would be agreeable with, Mourinho feels the talisman’s wages would be a huge stumbling block.

  • EPL: Tottenham confirm one positive COVID-19 test

EPL: Tottenham confirm one positive COVID-19 test

Tottenham have had one positive coronavirus result in the latest round of testing by the Premier League, the club say.

That person will now self-isolate for seven days.

“Due to medical confidentiality, the individual’s name will not be disclosed,” Spurs said in a statement on their website.

This was the only positive result after 1,197 players and staff were checked in the latest round of testing.

There have now been five rounds of testing for Covid-19, and the total of positive results has increased to 13 from 5,079 tests.

Premier League players and staff are currently tested twice a week, with the league set to resume on 17 June.

  • Arsenal, Spurs go head-to-head for Chelsea contract rebel

Arsenal, Spurs go head-to-head for Chelsea contract rebel

Arsenal and Tottenham are going head-to-head for Chelsea contract rebel Willian.

The Telegraph says the Premier League rivals are facing a scenario where they will only sign players on free transfers, loans or in swap deals.

Both clubs are planning for a summer without spending any money as the financial impact of the coronavirus suspension begins to bite.

The north London rivals face the prospect of raising money by selling off star assets like Harry Kane or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Willian’s Stamford Bridge future has been the subject of intense speculation, with his current deal set to run out at the end of June.

But with the Premier League likely to restart next month, a short-term deal is set to be agreed between both parties so Willian can play the rest of the season, which is likely to stretch into July and August.
