Solskjaer reveals his first chat with Mourinho

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lifted the lid on his first exchange with predecessor Jose Mourinho.

The Norwegian has recalled how they held their first proper chat ahead of Tottenham ‘s clash with the Red Devils at Old Trafford this season.

Solskjaer’s side ran out 2-1 winners after Marcus Rashford scored twice as Mourinho left empty handed on his return.

He told the United We Stand fanzine: “We had a chat before the game [vs Tottenham].

“I’d not really met him before, only briefly when he was at Chelsea and they played Cardiff.

“We had a nice chat. He was complaining about the away dressing room, the one that he’d changed!”

  • Tottenham’s Harry Kane to sponsor Leyton Orient’s shirt next season

Tottenham Hotspur striker and captain Harry Kane will sponsor Leyton Orient’s shirt next season with the space on the front to be given to charitable causes, the League Two (fourth tier) club and the English striker confirmed on Thursday.

The club said the home shirt will display a thank you message to healthcare workers on the frontline battling the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, while the away and third kits will carry logos of a children’s hospice and a mental health charity.

“It is with great pleasure to announce that Harry Kane has taken our front of shirt sponsorship for the 2020-21 season,” Orient said in a statement.

“With approval given from the Premier League, FA and EFL, a first of its kind deal have been agreed which the club are extremely proud of.”

Kane, who made his senior debut with Orient in 2011 when he was on loan for half a season, said he was “proud” to support the club and the causes involved.

“I was born and brought up only at a couple of miles from the stadium and I’m really happy to have the opportunity to give back to the club that gave me my first professional start,” Kane said.

“This also gives me a platform to be able to say a big thank you to the many frontline heroes and charities out there who provide care and support during these challenging times.”

Kane was recovering from a hamstring injury that required surgery before the Premier League was suspended in March due to the pandemic.

The league, which has nine rounds remaining, is looking to restart the season in June.

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli was held at knifepoint during a burglary in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Two men broke into the 24-year-old’s house in north London, where he is spending lockdown with his brother and their respective partners.

Alli was threatened and punched during the incident and suffered minor facial injuries in a scuffle.

The intruders stole items of jewellery including watches.

Alli has handed CCTV footage to the police.

“Thank you for all the messages. Horrible experience but we’re all okay now. Appreciate the support,” Alli posted on Twitter on Wednesday night.

Tottenhman added: “We have been offering our support to Dele and those isolating with him. We encourage anyone with any information to help the police with their investigation to come forward.”

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has completed his three-week mandatory military service in South Korea – and won an award for the best performance.

Officials said the 27-year-old excelled in shooting skills and was the top performer among 157 trainees.

Son had returned to his homeland in March to continue his recovery from a fractured arm while the season is suspended because of coronavirus.

All South Korean men must complete military service by the age of 28.

Son had earned exemption from the mandatory 21-month military service after helping South Korea win the 2018 Asian Games.

He graduated at a ceremony on Friday at a Marine Corps unit on the island of Jeju in the south of the country.

His military service included shooting and bayonet skills, chemical, biological and radiological training, individual battle skills and first aid training.

“He received the ‘Pilsung’ prize, which is one of five types of awards for best performers,” an officer said, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

“All the courses were judged in a fair and strict manner, and his military training officers have said he went through the training faithfully.”

Spurs congratulated their player on social media and said he will return to London next week.

Son had surgery in February after fracturing an arm during Tottenham’s 3-2 victory at Aston Villa.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho said he did not expect Son to play again this season, though that was before the Premier League’s shutdown.

Although he has now finished his military training, Son will still have to complete 544 hours of community service over the next 34 months.

Mourinho reveals one result that left him in tears

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has recalled the one result which left him in tears.

Mourinho has revealed how losing a Champions League semi-final to Bayern Munich with Real Madrid in 2012 left him crying in his car.

He recalled to Marca: “That is also football. Cristiano, Kaka, Sergio Ramos. They are three monsters of football, there is no doubt about that.

“But they are also human. That night is the only time I have ever cried after a football match.

“I remember it well: me and Aitor [Karanka] parked in the car in front of my house, crying. It was very hard to take because in that 2011-12 season we were the best team in Europe.”

EPL: Completing the season will be good for football – Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho believes resuming the Premier League season, halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and playing it to completion will be good for the sport.

Soccer in England was suspended indefinitely last month due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, which has caused more than 26,000 deaths in the United Kingdom. Premier League clubs are set to meet on Friday to discuss ways to finish the season.

Spurs’ first-team squad returned to the club’s facilities for individual training sessions this week as they prepare for a possible resumption.

“If we play the remaining nine matches this season it will be good for every one of us. It will be good for football, for the Premier League,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“If we play football behind closed doors (without fans) I’d like to think that football is never behind closed doors.

“With cameras, it means that millions and millions are watching. So if one day we walk into this empty stadium, it will not be empty, not at all.”

The suspension has given Spurs’ injured players such as Harry Kane, Moussa Sissoko and Steven Bergwijn time to recover but Mourinho said he was unsure of how long it would be before they were able to play competitive football again.

“For them, it’s many, many weeks of injury. And when the injury was arriving at an end, we stopped training,” Mourinho said.

“I don’t know, they don’t know, we have to wait for the right permission for them to train again in groups to see if they can come back to a normal competition level.”

Spurs were eighth in the Premier League standings with 41 points, seven points adrift of fourth, before the season was suspended.

  • Why I rejected offers to play for Arsenal, Tottenham – Enyeama

Former Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama said he snubbed offers from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur because they wanted him as a second choice goalkeeper.

The 37-year-old attracted interest from North London clubs after his fine outing with the Super Eagles at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

He said he was keen on having regular playing time and his snub made the Gunners move for David Ospina who joined Napoli permanently last year after impressing on loan.

“Arsenal wanted me for second choice, but I was not interested. I also had an offer from Tottenham that wanted me for second choice also and I wasn’t interested,” Enyeama told ESPN.

“It was after the 2006 Nations Cup and then again around the 2014 World Cup. When I turned them down, that is when they [Arsenal] took David Ospina.

“For me, I was at the stage where I preferred playing even if it was for one of the smallest teams. That is what the agents that were involved told me. That Arsene (Wenger) wanted me but he is not so sure because of my height and things like that.

“People have their choices and I respect their choices.”

Enyeama had a trial at Bolton Wanderers in the early 2000s and was close to signing a deal with the Whites which never happened.

“I am still wondering why I didn’t sign. It was a trial that went so well,” he continued. “They even told me I was going to get jersey number 35. All that was left was just to do the medicals.

“I was supposed to be number three, because Bolton had two goalkeepers already, with Jussi Jaaskelainen as number one.”

Mourinho accepts he broke social-distancing rules

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho says he “accepts my actions were not in line with government protocol” after being pictured flouting coronavirus social-distancing guidelines.

Mourinho was pictured leading a training session with record signing Tanguy Ndombele on Hadley Common.

Davinson Sanchez and Ryan Sessegnon were filmed running together through the same London park.

Serge Aurier posted a video of himself on Instagram jogging alongside another.

Spurs said they have spoken to the players to “remind them to respect” the government’s coronavirus guidelines, while the Metropolitan Police said it was “aware” of the social media footage but “no complaints had been received in relation to this incident”.

Mourinho said: “I accept that my actions were not in line with government protocol and we must only have contact with members of our own household.”

“It is vital we all play our part and follow government advice in order to support our heroes in the NHS and save lives.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the players and Mourinho should be leading by example.

Jan Vertonghen ready to quit Tottenham

Jan Vertonghen is ready to leave Tottenham at the end of this season.

The centre-back’s contract expires in North London at the end of the season.

Football Insider reports the Belgian has been unable to successfully negotiate a new deal.

Spurs are understood to have offered a one-year extension on reduced terms.

But Vertonghen, who turns 33 in April, wants at least another two years.

And so the long-serving defender is on course to leave White Hart Lane.
