FA Cup: Tottenham survive late scare to reach fourth round

Tottenham gained a hard-fought victory over Championship side Middlesbrough in their FA Cup third-round replay.

Spurs were gifted a second-minute lead when Boro goalkeeper Tomas Mejias passed the ball to Giovani lo Celso, who cut inside a challenge and scored.

Lamela doubled the hosts’ advantage after 15 minutes when he flicked the ball past Mejias after a fine run.

George Saville pulled one back late on for Boro with a low strike from 20 yards out, but it was not enough.

Middlesbrough substitute Rudy Gestede had a chance to force extra-time but he could only head over the bar from eight yards as Spurs held on for the win.

Tottenham, who have won the FA Cup eight times, will play at Southampton in the fourth round later this month.

Transfer: Benfica’s Fernandes due for Tottenham medical

Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes is due to have a medical at Tottenham on Monday before an 18-month loan to the Premier League club.

Fernandes had been targeted by West Ham but has opted instead to join Jose Mourinho at Spurs.

If he passes the medical, the 21-year-old will become Mourinho’s first signing as Tottenham manager.

“I am waiting for news,” Mourinho said on Monday. “I don’t want to talk about a Benfica player.”

It is understood Tottenham will have an option to buy Fernandes when his loan deal with the Premier League club expires in 2021.

His arrival will be a boost for Mourinho, who has lost skipper Harry Kane and influential midfielder Moussa Sissoko to long-term injury.

Almighty Liverpool defeat Tottenham, extend lead

Liverpool have extended their lead at the top of English Premier League to 16 after defeating Tottenham by a lone goal on Saturday.

Roberto Firmino’s first-half 37th minute strike was enough to see Liverpool claim all three points.

BBC reports that Jurgen Klopp’s side became the first club in the top five European leagues to win 20 of their opening 21 matches.

Liverpool, who are chasing their first top-flight title in 30 years, are also well on course to break a myriad other records.

Their victory saw them eclipse Manchester City’s 2017-18 Premier League record of 59 points from 21 games but they could yet reach other notable milestones such as the most wins and points in a season.

Virgil van Dijk could have added to their margin of victory while Brazil forward Firmino also hit the woodwork for the visitors during a dominant first-half display.

However, Son Heung-min and Giovani lo Celso both spurned excellent chances to equalise after the break for eighth-placed Tottenham.

Tottenham cannot play normally without Kane – Mourinho

No player can take the injured Harry Kane’s place and Tottenham “cannot play like we normally play” without him, says manager Jose Mourinho.

He is ruled out until April with a hamstring injury that requires surgery.

England captain Kane has scored 27 goals in 31 appearances for club and country this season.

“If I speak too much about Harry, I get a bit depressed and then you are going to say ‘he is miserable’,” Mourinho said.

“It’s better to talk about things that make me laugh.”

Tottenham host Premier League leaders Liverpool on Saturday.

Kane suffered the injury during Tottenham’s defeat at Southampton on New Year’s Day and will not return to training until April.

“You know that we cannot play like we normally play when Harry Kane is in the team,” Mourinho said.

“There’s no player who can replace Harry Kane.”

EPL: Mourinho suffers huge injury blow

Tottenham have confirmed Harry Kane will be sidelined until April and will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring.

“Following ongoing assessment by our medical staff over the past week, we can confirm that Harry Kane will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring,” said a club statement on Thursday.

“The striker suffered the injury during our Premier League fixture against Southampton last week and specialists have advised surgery after further review of the injury.

“The decision to undergo surgery is not expected to impact the time-frame that the England captain will be sidelined, with the expectation that he will return to training in April.”

I was rude to an idiot, says Mourinho after booking

Jose Mourinho admitted he was “rude, but rude to an idiot” after he was booked for a confrontation with Southampton goalkeeping coach Andrew Sparks.

Mourinho received a yellow card from referee Mike Dean following the second-half altercation, with the Portuguese annoyed about a perceived delay and time taken to substitute match-winner Danny Ings for Michael Obafemi in the 76th minute.

Asked about the incident after the game, Mourinho said: “I think the yellow card is fair because I was rude, but I was rude to an idiot. And for some reason, I was rude, but I was and because I was I deserve the yellow card.”

EPL: Mourinho sees defeat on New Year day

A brilliant goal from Danny Ings gave Southampton a narrow but deserved win over Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

The Saints striker flicked the ball superbly over Toby Alderweireld before shooting past Paulo Gazzaniga for his ninth goal in his past 10 games.

Spurs were unimpressive, with Jan Vertonghen missing their best chance from close range in the first half.

Mourinho, who was booked late on, sees his team stay sixth in the table, while Southampton rise to 12th.

Spurs striker Harry Kane was forced off with a leg injury just seconds after having a goal disallowed for offside in the second half.

Shane Long went close with a header with five minutes left, but Southampton are now unbeaten in their last four outings.

  • EPL: Tottenham renew top four hopes with win over Brighton

Tottenham renewed their pursuit of a place in the Premier League top four as they came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 in north London.

The result lifts Spurs up to fifth in the table, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea who host Southampton later on Thursday.

Sheffield United could leapfrog Jose Mourinho’s side with a win over Watford (also on Thursday) while Wolves, another side on the fringe of a top-four position host Manchester City on Friday.

Adam Webster had given the visitors a richly deserved lead, heading in from Pascal Gross’ right-wing delivery towards the end of the first half.

However, Spurs, who played at a pedestrian pace during the first period, raised their tempo after the interval to fight back.

Harry Kane levelled matters with a right-foot shot into the bottom left corner after Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan had brilliantly parried his first effort.

And Dele Alli’s sublime lobbed finish then found the top left corner to complete the turnaround.

It ensured Brighton’s miserable record on 26 December continued – with the Seagulls now winless in their last 11 games on this date.

  • Mourinho has added nothing to Tottenham – Nicholas

Mourinho has added nothing to Tottenham – Nicholas

Former Arsenal star, Charlie Nicholas has noted that Jose Mourinho has not changed anything at Tottenham Hotspur.

This is following the recent 2-1 defeat to London rivals Chelsea.

Mourinho has suffered three losses in his first eight matches at Tottenham.

The defeats came at the hands of Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Chelsea..
The defeat to Chelsea has, however, raised plenty of questions about Tottenham’s ability to compete for a top-four finish.

Nicholas believes not much has changed under the Portuguese coach even though Spurs are now seventh in the table.

“I have been really impressed with Brighton, but they were poor against Sheffield United. At the same time, Tottenham were awful and well-beaten against Chelsea,” he told Sky Sports.

“Heung-Min Son’s red card tells you all you need to know. Have things changed under Jose Mourinho? I don’t think they have”.

“Harry Kane looks off the pace and Jan Vertonghen is really struggling to deal with pace. If I were Brighton I would get Leandro Trossard on his side and really test him.
“It’s essential that Spurs stay in the frame for the top four so for that reason alone I think they will get over the line.”
  • Lampard becomes master over Mourinho in league win

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard out-manouevred his one-time mentor Jose Mourinho – but a comfortable win at Tottenham was overshadowed by alleged racist behaviour aimed at visiting defender Antonio Rudiger.

Rudiger was involved in the second-half incident that saw Tottenham’s Son Heung-min sent off.

The striker was dismissed, following a video assistant referee review, for raising his boot in a clash with the German centre-back near the touchline.

Shortly afterwards, Rudiger, 26, appeared to gesticulate that he had received racist abuse from Spurs fans.

Chelsea drew the incident to the attention of referee Anthony Taylor and three subsequent announcements were made over the public address system warning that racist behaviour among spectators was interfering with the game.

The match was also held up when objects were thrown towards Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, capping a miserable afternoon for Spurs and Mourinho against his former club.

It marred an outstanding Chelsea display that halted their recent slide, with the game effectively won inside the first 45 minutes courtesy of Willian’s superb curling finish and a penalty from the Brazilian awarded by VAR after Spurs keeper Paulo Gazzaniga had flattened Marcos Alonso.

Chelsea’s victory strengthened their grip on fourth place and left them four points above fifth-placed Sheffield United. Spurs remain in seventh place – six points adrift.
