BREAKING: Liverpool crowned champions of Europe for sixth time

Liverpool erased the disappointment of last season’s Champions League final loss by claiming the trophy for the sixth time with victory over Tottenham in Madrid.

It was Mohamed Salah, such a disconsolate figure when he was injured early in that loss to Real Madrid, who set Liverpool on their way with a penalty after two minutes when Moussa Sissoko was contentiously punished for handball.

In a final that rarely touched the heights of the blockbuster semi-finals that made this an all-Premier League showpiece, Spurs had chances but were denied by Liverpool keeper Alisson, who saved well from Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen.

And their failure to capitalise was ruthlessly punished when substitute Divock Origi ensured manager Jurgen Klopp won his first trophy as Liverpool manager by driving low and powerfully past Hugo Lloris with three minutes left.

Spurs counterpart Mauricio Pochettino took the gamble of selecting England captain and main striker Harry Kane despite his not having played since April because of an ankle injury, replacing semi-final hat-trick hero Lucas Moura, but he had no impact.

Liverpool lifted the trophy that was taken from their grasp in Ukraine last season and now stand behind only Real Madrid and AC Milan as serial winners of this tournament, the final whistle sparking huge celebrations among players, management and the red wave of supporters in Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Tottenham: I never dreamt of Champions League final – Winks

Harry Winks is on the cusp of experiencing something he did not even dare dream about when he was growing up as a Tottenham supporter.

The midfielder has overcome a groin injury, which needed surgery and has kept him out since early April, and looks set to be involved in Spurs’ Champions League final encounter against Liverpool in Madrid.

Winks, whose family are all lifelong Tottenham fans, played a small part in a big European night for Spurs nine years ago, when he was a flag-bearer ahead of the 2010 Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.

The prospect of playing a much more significant role in the Spanish capital is something he is still getting his head around.

“Being a Spurs fan makes this 10 times more special for me,” Winks said.

“To be part of a team that has got to the Champions League final with Tottenham is something, honestly, I would never have dreamt of doing. To have the opportunity to say that.

“But to have been a part of the team and to have played as many games as I have done in the Champions League, to be part of this amazing side and this incredible era for Tottenham, honestly, it’s a true privilege.

“I am humbled to have the opportunity to do that and if we can go all the way then we’ll make history and it will be fantastic. It’s something that we believe we can do as well.”

West Ham inflict first loss on Tottenham at new stadium

Tottenham suffered a first defeat in their new stadium thanks to Michail Antonio’s superb second-half strike for West Ham.

Third-placed Spurs had won all four games since moving into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in early April.

But Antonio’s goal in the 67th minute was the first Tottenham had conceded at home in that period, and means they are not yet certain of finishing in the top four in the Premier League.

West Ham’s Fabian Balbuena cleared a Vincent Janssen header off the line in stoppage time.

The win ended a run of four games without victory for West Ham, who remain 11th in the table with two games to play this season.

West Ham finished strongly, with Antonio and defender Issa Diop forcing Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris into saves in the closing stages.

Spurs looked tired – they were playing their seventh match in April, and face one more when they entertain Ajax in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg.

  • EPL: Man City, Tottenham set for another battle after Champions League clash

EPL: Man City, Tottenham set for another battle after Champions League clash

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is determined to further derail Manchester City’s season when the two clubs meet again on Saturday in a Premier League fixture.

But the Spurs manager admits it will be very tough for his side, having already ended City’s quadruple bid when they secured a dramatic away-goals win in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

City have now turned their attention to defending their Premier League crown and they will go back to the top of the pile if they beat Spurs.

City boss Pep Guardiola believes the hurt from Wednesday’s Champions League extraordinary game will serve as motivation, but Pochettino has denied the hosts will be out for revenge.

    “Not revenge,” he said.

“For sure, they are going to move on like us from the Champions League to the Premier League.

“They are going to fight for a massive thing which is to win the Premier League and the principal challenge is to win the Premier League for them.”

And Spurs are not able to sit back and bask in the joy of reaching their first-ever Champions League semi-final – where they will meet Ajax – as they are embroiled in their own top-four battle.

  • That’s why we love football, says Pochettino after City win

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino hailed his team as “heroes” after Wednesday’s astonishing Champions League quarter-final with Manchester City.

The match ended in an away goals win for his team after ending 4-4 on aggregate.

The 4-3 win on the night for Manchester City was so nearly 5-3 — and progress to the last four for City — but Raheem Sterling’s stoppage time effort was ruled out by a VAR review.

It correctly spotted Sergio Aguero off-side.

“It was unbelievable – the way it finished,” said Pochettino.

“I am so happy, so proud. My players are heroes to be here. I am so happy for them, so happy for the fans,” added the Argentine.

Pochettino said he had gone through a wild mix of emotions during the final moments as four words flashed up on the big screen – “No goal, VAR, offiside” – confirmed that Sterling’s goal had been over-turned.

“In a moment many things happened in your head, the disappointment was massive but they changed the decision,” he added.

“That is why we love football. Today we showed great character and great personality it was an unbelievable game.”

Spurs midfielder Christian Eriksen, who gave the ball away in the build-up to Sterling’s disallowed goal, did not disguise his relief.

“I must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet tonight. I thought it was all over but it was a fun game.

“It was a rollercoaster, we gave them a lot but also got a lot. It was a weird game,” he said.

Tottenham’s South Korean forward Son Heung-min, whose two strikes were part of the four goals scored in the opening 11 minutes, said it was an unforgettable game.

“I have never seen something like this. It was tough and crazy but we are very proud of our team mates. It was madness,” he said.

“Sometimes you are annoyed with VAR but today it is thank you. We fought together for 90 minutes. We showed unbelievable character and fight.”

  • Lucas Moura scores hat-trick as Spurs thrash Huddersfield

Lucas Moura scores hat-trick as Spurs thrash Huddersfield

Lucas Moura scored a brilliant hat-trick as Tottenham cruised past relegated Huddersfield and moved above Chelsea into third in the Premier League.

A much-changed Spurs side dominated from the off at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and deservedly went ahead when Victor Wanyama danced around Ben Hamer and slotted home midway through the first half.

Moura added their second just 144 seconds later as he rifled a low shot past Hamer after being played in by Moussa Sissoko.

The Brazilian was on the scoresheet again three minutes from time as he controlled and volleyed home Christian Eriksen’s cross.

And he completed his hat-trick deep into injury time with another emphatic finish past Hamer.

Christian Eriksen and Fernando Llorente had earlier hit the woodwork for Spurs as they piled on the pressure, though Hugo Lloris was called into action late on to tip a Leandro Bacuna free-kick onto the crossbar.

Huddersfield remain bottom and they have now lost six consecutive league games.

  • Kane could be out for rest of season – Pochettino

Kane could be out for rest of season – Pochettino

Tottenham striker Harry Kane could miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury, says manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Kane, 25, will have an MRI scan on Wednesday after hobbling off during Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

The England captain was seen leaving the stadium on crutches, with a protective boot on his left ankle.

“It’s a worry for us,” said Pochettino.

“We are going to miss him – maybe for the rest of the season. We hope it is not a big issue but there is not to much time to recover. He twisted his ankle so we will see how it reacts in a few hours.”

Kane had slipped as he tried to block Fabian Delph’s clearance on the right touchline in the second half and was substituted immediately.

He was ruled out for almost two months in January when he damaged ligaments in the same ankle during their 1-0 Premier League home defeat by Manchester United.

In addition, he missed a month of last season with a similar injury to the right ankle, and endured separate absences of six and four weeks during the 2016-17 campaign.

“We need to check but it looks like it is the same ankle and similar injury,” said Pochettino. “It is very sad and very disappointing.”

UCL: Son gives Tottenham first-leg win over Man City

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min’s late goal sealed a 1-0 home victory against Manchester City in an absorbing Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.

With Spurs talisman Harry Kane having hobbled off injured and favourites City beginning to turn the screw, Son sent the home fans inside the London club’s majestic new stadium into delirium.

The South Koreasn fired past Ederson in the 78th minute.

Quadruple-chasing City, beaten at the same stage last year by Liverpool, were not at their slick best.
To make matters worse, SergioAguero’s first-half penalty miss proved costly.

The Argentine’s spot kick was superbly saved by Hugo Lloris after VAR adjudged defender Danny Rose to have handled.

Tottenham showed great discipline to preserve their lead and will now go to The Etihad next Wednesday with their hopes of a first Champions League semi-final appearance intact.

  • UCL: Man City clash biggest game of my life – Pochettino

UCL: Man City clash biggest game of my life – Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has said his team Champions League quarter-final tie against Manchester City will be one of the most important matches in his career.

City head to north London on Tuesday for the first European match at Tottenham’s new 62,000-seater stadium, with Pep Guardiola’s side continuing their bid to win four trophies this season.

Having seen their own Premier League title ambitions fade last month, Tottenham’s hopes of winning silverware this season now rest on getting past the league champions and into a first Champions League semi-final in the club’s history.

When asked if Tuesday’s game was going to be the biggest of his life, Pochettino said: “Yes. This is going to be one of the most important games.

“For us, it is a bonus to play in the quarter-finals. We are going to try to beat them. The objective is to be in the semi-finals but it is going to be tough because Manchester City are a very good team and we respect them.”

Asked if City can complete a historic quadruple, Pochettino added: “In the last few years Manchester City are building to try and win everything. They have a very good squad and one of the best managers in the world. If one team can do it, it is Manchester City.

“We want to start tomorrow being very aggressive and try to dominate. We have had time to prepare for the game.

“It is our second game in our new stadium and the first in the Champions League so we hope the atmosphere is amazing and tough for our opponent.

  • EPL: Tottenham break world record with £113m profit

Tottenham Hotspur made a world-record profit of £113m after tax last season.

The figure tops the £106m profit posted by Premier League rivals Liverpool earlier this year.

Yearly financial results for 2017-18 reveal Spurs’ income climbed from £310m to £380m thanks to player sales, bigger crowds at Wembley Stadium and reaching the Champions League knockout stages.

The figures were released as the club opened a new £1bn stadium – though much of that cost has been met with loans.

Premier League matchday revenue more than doubled from £19m to £42.6m thanks to playing in front of larger crowds at Wembley while the new stadium was under construction.

Tottenham beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in their first game at the new ground.

It left the side third in the Premier League, one point in front of London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea and three points in front of Manchester United in sixth place.

The financial results show the club is still some way off competing with other top six sides financially, however.

Last season, Tottenham spent £147m on player wages, for example – almost £100m lower than Arsenal’s £240m wage bill, the next lowest of the top six clubs – and about half that of Manchester United.

The annual results filed by the club also show £116m was spent on new players in the period, with the likes of Brazil international Lucas Moura and defender Serge Aurier both coming in from Paris St-Germain.

However, the club also made £84m back in player sales – defender Kyle Walker’s move to Manchester City providing more than half of that.
