  • EPL: Tottenham will make Champions League – Pochettino

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has “no doubt” his team will be in the Champions League next season.

Spurs could drop out of the top four on Tuesday after losing four of their past five Premier League fixtures.

They host Crystal Palace in the first match at their new £1bn stadium on Wednesday in search of their first league victory since 10 February.

“We have seven games left, five here, and that has to give us a boost,” Pochettino insisted.

Spurs were second in the table at the beginning of the year and have not been outside the top three since the start of December.

Despite their disappointing league form, they remain in Champions League contention this season, their third successive campaign in Europe’s elite club competition.

They are through to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2011 and the first leg against Manchester City takes place at the new stadium on 9 April.

“The best stadium in the world must play in the Champions League,” Pochettino told a news conference before the key encounter with Palace.

“It will be a shame not to be in the next Champions League. We are going to fight. I have no doubt we will be in the Champions League next season.

“It’s in our hands; it’s an exciting moment for us.”

  • EPL: Southampton stun Tottenham with comeback win

EPL: Southampton stun Tottenham with comeback win

Two late goals in five minutes earned Southampton an incredible victory against Tottenham to remain clear of the Premier League bottom three.

James Ward-Prowse earned the win with a sensational free-kick from 25 yards to keep the Saints two points ahead of Cardiff, who won at home to West Ham.

The midfielder’s strike came after calamitous defending allowed Southampton to draw level via Yan Valery, who pounced on Danny Rose’s mistake.

Victory seemed unlikely after a poor first half dominated by Spurs who took the lead when Harry Kane scored his 200th career goal.

But the incredible turnaround earned Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team a second consecutive home win – the first time Southampton have achieved that since December 2016.

Tottenham, whose manager Mauricio Pochettino was in the stands as part of his two-match touchline ban, remain third after losing a third league game in four.

Manchester United, who were 13 points behind Spurs when Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager on 16 December, can move level on points with Spurs should they beat Arsenal on Sunday.

Tottenham coach Pochettino hit with touchline ban

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been given a two-match touchline ban and fined £10,000 by the Football Association for angrily confronting referee Mike Dean after his side’s 2-1 defeat at Burnley.

Pochettino admitted he “crossed the line” with the official and later made a public apology to Dean.

The 46-year-old accepted an FA charge of improper conduct.

“It is not the way to behave,” he said following the incident.

Dean was later moved from his fourth official duties for Spurs’ game at Chelsea the following week.

Pochettino will serve his ban in the Premier League games against former club Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on 9 March and at Liverpool on 31 March.

The Argentine did not reveal what was he said to Dean at Turf Moor, or the reason for his strong reaction, although he had complained about a corner awarded in the build-up to Burnley’s opening goal.

Pochettino had said he was not anticipating a ban.

“A ban, why? I don’t believe that it’s going to happen. I don’t think that’s going to be fair,” he said.

“For what? It was a conversation, no? Maybe it was close but it was a conversation.

“I don’t believe it’s fair. But I’m going to accept if they ban me and I can’t be in the dugout against Southampton.”

  • UCL: Kane scores in Dortmund as Spurs stroll into last eight

UCL: Kane scores in Dortmund as Spurs stroll into last eight

Tottenham Hotspur beat hosts Borussia Dortmund 1-0 on Tuesday thanks to a Harry Kane winner, to stroll into the Champions League quarter-finals.

It was only the English club’s second time of reaching the quarter-finals of the elite European club competition in their history with a 4-0 aggregate victory.

Kane, who missed the first leg through injury, fired in the winner shortly after the restart to silence a fiery home crowd.

The goal left Dortmund needing five goals after having lost 3-0 in London last month.

The Germans, who have seen their seven-point lead in the league evaporate in recent weeks and are also out of the German Cup, have never overturned a 3-0 first leg deficit in the competition.

Despite a valiant effort in the first half, they were unable to score.

For Tottenham, whose only other quarter-final appearance came in the 2010/11 season, it turned out to be an easier task than expected.

  • Dortmund to attempt the impossible against Tottenham – Reus

Borussia Dortmund are going into their Champions League Round-of-16 second leg at home against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday with a clear disadvantage after a 3-0 first-leg loss but the Germans will attempt a major upset, said Captain Marco Reus.

Bundesliga leaders Dortmund have managed just one win in their last five league games, while also losing to Tottenham in London and being eliminated by Werder Bremen in the German Cup.

Reus, injured in the game against Werder in early February, returned on Friday but could do nothing to avert their second league loss of the season, 2-1 at Augsburg.

On Monday, he sounded confident that his team could still turn things around against the English side if they hit top form on the night.

“I think this stadium (in Dortmund) has seen its share of games where history was written,” Reus told a news conference. “We can also do it.

“But we need a top performance and to score the goals at the right time. I think we are in a position to achieve the impossible.”

Dortmund still has the best attack in the German Bundesliga but in recent weeks they have struggled to score while also conceding goals through individual errors.

Their seven-point gap a few weeks ago has now shrunk to a slim goal difference ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich, while their lacklustre first-leg performance against Tottenham also raised alarm bells.

“We know in the past weeks we have gifted away points because we made too many mistakes,” Reus said. “We have to remain positive and keep working.

“We have to be stronger, have a stronger mentality, like we had in the previous months. We will emerge from this.”

  • Aubameyang misses penalty in north London derby draw

Aubameyang misses penalty in north London derby draw

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw a last-minute penalty saved by Hugo Lloris to cost Arsenal victory and ensure Tottenham retained a crucial advantage over their arch-rivals in the battle for a top-four place after a dramatic north London derby at Wembley.

Harry Kane’s contested penalty put Spurs level with 16 minutes left after Aaron Ramsey’s coolly taken 16th-minute goal threatened to inflict a third successive league defeat on boss Mauricio Pochettino for the first time in his reign.

Arsenal were then handed a golden opportunity to close to within one point of Spurs after Davinson Sanchez fouled Aubameyang, but the striker’s tame penalty was easily saved low to his right by the diving Lloris.

And to add to the late chaos, Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira was sent off for a reckless challenge on Danny Rose in the closing seconds.

After Ramsey’s strike, keeper Bernd Leno kept Arsenal on level terms with a miraculous double save from Christian Eriksen and Moussa Sissoko but the Gunners paid a heavy price for a glaring second-half miss from striker Alexandre Lacazette before Aubamayeng’s wayward spot-kick.

Lacazette failed to hit the target from eight yards and Spurs took advantage, Kane scoring from the spot to equalise after referee Anthony Taylor adjudged he was fouled by Shkodran Mustafi.

Arsenal were also angry as they believed offside should have been given in the build-up but Kane stayed calm amid the chaos to send Leno the wrong way from the spot for his ninth goal in this fixture and keep Spurs four points ahead of Unai Emery’s side.

The Gunners, however, have only themselves to blame after wasting that late chance to seal a league double over Spurs.

  • EPL: Tottenham’s Son named London Player of the Year

Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son has been named the Premier League Player of the Year at the 2019 London Football Awards.

The South Korean was awarded the top gong for his stunning form this season that has seen him score 16 goals in 34 games in all competitions.

The 26-year-old, who also helped his country to win gold at the 2018 Asian Games, has been a key part of a Spurs side that are close to reaching the Champions League quarter-finals.

Son claimed the award ahead of team-mate and last year’s winner Harry Kane, Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend.

The award was given to Son by a panel of 22 experts including ex-players such as Bobby Zamora, Bob Wilson and Tony Cottee.

Away from the Premier League, Brentford’s Neal Maupay scooped the Football League Player of the Year award for London-based teams.

The Bees forward has scored 22 goals in 37 games in all competitions this season and that form helped him beat off competition from Millwall striker Lee Gregory, QPR midfielder Luke Freeman and Charlton’s Karlan Grant and Lyle Taylor.

  • Derby: Arsenal keen to close gap on Tottenham – Emery

Derby: Arsenal keen to close gap on Tottenham – Emery

Arsenal manager Unai Emery believes the opportunity to inch close to within a point of Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League will be a “big motivation” for his players ahead of Saturday’s north London derby.

Midfielders Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan marked their sparkling return to form as Arsenal eased past Bournemouth 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

The win, coupled with Tottenham’s loss at Chelsea, means fourth-placed Arsenal head to Wembley this weekend four points adrift of their local rivals.

“It is a big motivation,” Emery told reporters.

“We need to take the opportunity like today, these three points. After we can have and get an opportunity like Saturday.

“They are still ahead of us in the table, and it’s difficult to win there, but it’s a good test.”

Mkhitaryan and Ozil both put themselves in contention to start the derby with a goal apiece against Bournemouth.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery refused to be drawn on whether the pair had done enough to feature in his tactical plans for the weekend.

“I’m going to watch the match back, and Tottenham’s, and after that I will decide our game plan for Saturday with every player,” he added.

“If we can play with big performance I want every player to help us with this decision.”

  • Burnley dent Tottenham’s Premier League title hopes

Tottenham’s Premier League title challenge suffered a huge blow as they were beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor.

The Clarets opened the scoring shortly after the break as Chris Wood rose highest to head home Dwight McNeil’s inswinging corner.

Harry Kane, making his first appearance since 13 January, equalised after latching onto Danny Rose’s quick throw-in and poking past Tom Heaton, before Ashley Barnes tapped in Burnley’s second late on.

The match ended amid drama as the frustrations of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino spilled over at the final whistle.

The Argentine, who earlier was clearly unhappy about the awarding of the corner that led to Wood’s opener, angrily confronted referee Mike Dean before being pulled away by Burnley’s Phil Bardsley.

Spurs stay in third place, five points behind Liverpool who face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Burnley rise to 13th and are now six points clear of the relegation places.
