Carabao Cup: I don’t like VAR, says Pochettino after Chelsea win

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said he was “unhappy to win like this” after the system awarded Harry Kane the penalty that won the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea.

The only goal of the Wembley game came from the spot after referee Michael Oliver consulted the video assistant referee to check if Kane was onside before he was fouled by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The VAR camera suggested Kane was onside, but Chelsea showed a screenshot of their own system after the game that suggested he was offside.

The Premier League is set to introduce the system from next season.

“We have six months to improve the system,” Pochettino said. “There is a lot of work to do.”

Pochettino was even stronger in his criticism of the technology, despite the part it played in his side’s victory.

“I don’t like the VAR,” he said. “Today we get the benefit of it but after watching the World Cup and another league like La Liga, I see that nobody is happy from day one that they started to use it.

“To get the benefit is nice but I am unhappy to win the game like this.

  • EPL: Tottenham extend Alderweireld’s contract until 2020

Tottenham Hotspur have extended defender Toby Alderweireld’s contract until 2020, the Premier League club said on Friday.

The Belgium international’s deal was set to expire at the end of the current season after which the 29-year-old centre back would have been able to leave the club for free in the close season.

“The club can confirm that we have activated the option to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract until 2020,”Tottenham said in a statement.

Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino had confirmed in December that the club was looking to activate the one-year extension in his contract.

Alderweireld has made 135 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions since signing from Spanish side, Atletico Madrid, in 2015 for a reported fee of 11.4 million pounds.

He had been linked with a move away from the club prior to the 2018-2019 season when British media reported that Manchester United were interested in securing his services.

A hamstring injury limited Alderweireld to only 14 Premier League starts last season, but he has featured more prominently this season, making 19 starts so far.

EPL: Wolves comeback to beat Tottenham at Wembley

Wolves came from a goal down to stun Tottenham 3-1 at Wembley in a Premier League fixture on Saturday.

Harry Kane opened the scoring with a solo effort in the 22nd minute of the game with a powerful left-footed strike across goalkeeper Rui Patricio and into the far corner from 25 yards.

But the hosts became sloppy after half-time and Wolves built momentum, equalising in the 72nd when Willy Boly powered in a header following a corner.

Raul Jimenez’s weak effort from the edge of the area beat Hugo Lloris to put Wolves in front before Helder Costa added a third on the counter-attack three minutes from time.

Spurs remain second in the table but leaders Liverpool could go nine points clear as they face Arsenal.

  • EPL: Tottenham, Arsenal charged for failing to control players

English Premier League (EPL) clubsides Tottenham and Arsenal were fined by the Football Association (FA) on Thursday.

The sanction was over their failure to control their players during this month’s north London derby at The Emirates.

“Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been fined 45,000 pounds and 50,000 pounds respectively.

“This was after both clubs admitted an FA charge of failing to ensure that their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion,” the FA said in a statement on their website.

The fines relate to their clash at The Emirates on Dec. 2, which Arsenal won 4-2.

Tottenham face Chelsea in Carabao Cup semi-finals

Tottenham Hotspur must overcome another London rival to reach the Carabao Cup final match after being drawn against Chelsea in the last four on Wednesday.

Third tier Burton Albion will take on holders Manchester City however, in a pairing which comparatively looks like a mismatch.

Tottenham, who beat fierce local foes Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to reach the semis, have also met London clubs Watford and West Ham in this year’s competition.

“A very difficult draw, another London derby,” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino told Sky Sports.

“We shall see. Chelsea are a great team but we are excited. To be in the semi-final is fantastic for us.”

Chelsea booked their spot in the last four with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth, thanks to Eden Hazard’s deflected winner.

Burton reached the semi-finals for the first time in their history after Nigel Clough’s side beat Middlesbrough 1-0 on Tuesday.

They face the daunting prospect of trying to stop English Premier League champions Manchester City, who beat Leicester City on penalty kicks to reach the last four.

The two-legged ties will be played in the weeks of Jan. 7 and Jan. 21.

  • EPL: Tottenham are in the title race, says Pochettino

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is unhappy that the Premier League title race is perceived as only being between Liverpool and Manchester City, says his team are still in the race.

Liverpool lead the way on 42 points, a point clear of Manchester City – but Spurs are just five points back, having made one of their best-ever starts to a Premier League campaign.

And, fresh from dramatically securing a place in the last-16 of the Champions League on Tuesday, Spurs will be looking for a 13th Premier League win of the season when Burnley visit on Saturday.

Asked if his side are in the title hunt, Pochettino said: “We are there, we are in a good position, but the perception is different.
“When you talk about the perception from the people or from the media, it is Manchester City and Liverpool – and not us.

“I am not happy with the perception, when they are not assessing it in the right way.

“I think when you assess different clubs, normally, it is Liverpool and Manchester City, Chelsea, [Manchester] United, Arsenal, who will be involved in the race for the title – but not Tottenham.

“But of course we are there, because we compete in a very good way, because our performances have been fantastic – and the perception is different.”

  • UCL: Late Lucas Moura strike helps Tottenham into knock-out stage

UCL: Late Lucas Moura strike helps Tottenham into knock-out stage

Lucas Moura’s 85th-minute equaliser earned a priceless point at Barcelona, as Tottenham completed an unlikely turnaround in Champions League Group B having collected only one point from their first three games.

They needed to match or better Inter Milan’s result at home to PSV Eindhoven and had faced elimination when Mauro Icardi cancelled out PSV’s early goal.

Moura’s goal swung the advantage back in Spurs’ favour but an agonising wait followed before it was confirmed Inter had failed to find a winner against the group’s bottom side.

“I am so happy for the fans – this is a massive, massive achievement for the club,” said Pochettino.

“We suffered because when we finished the game we did not know the result at Inter. It was two very difficult minutes, but in the end of course we were so happy. It’s so important for the club.”

The Premier League side had gone behind to Ousmane Dembele’s early strike but then peppered Barcelona’s defence with wave after wave of attacks, with both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min going close.

They finally made the decisive breakthrough five minutes from the end when substitute Moura, who moments earlier had a header cleared off the line, fired in.

Spurs become only the eighth side to qualify from the group stage after claiming only one point from their first three games.

  • EPL: Arsenal’s win over Tottenham a special moment – Emery

EPL: Arsenal’s win over Tottenham a special moment – Emery

Arsenal’s relentless attacking performance to overpower Tottenham was a “special” moment, says Unai Emery.

His side extended their unbeaten run to 19 matches, moving above Spurs into the top four, with a display that reflected the outstanding work the Spaniard has done since succeeding Arsene Wenger.

Despite his satisfaction at beating their arch-rivals in his first north London derby, Emery has challenged his players to continue improving.

“It is a very big victory; we showed our supporters and we gave them the victory because it is a very special match against Tottenham, for us it is special also,” the Arsenal manager said.

“But above all it is three points, like against Bournemouth last weekend.

“We need to continue our process, creating our way. I want to do more.”

Arsenal’s fast start drew early reward when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put them ahead from the spot after Jan Vertonghen’s handball.

Yet Spurs, against the run of play, were ahead before the break. Eric Dier glanced home Christian Eriksen’s free-kick to equalise, sparking a melee involving players from both sides with his celebrations in front of Arsenal’s fans, before Harry Kane scored from the spot after Rob Holding was penalised for a challenge on Son Heung-min.

Emery introduced Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey at the start of the second half to dramatic effect.

The Welshman set up Aubameyang’s magnificent finish and the France striker’s deflected shot beat goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from the edge of the area to put Arsenal ahead with 16 minutes left.

The outstanding Lucas Torreira ran clear to wrap up Arsenal’s win and Spurs’ misery was complete when Vertonghen was sent off for a foul on Lacazette.

“Until they scored the third goal I think the game was even, after that we started to pay,” Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

“It was difficult for the team to show the energy that we normally show.”

  • Arsenal wants to create new history, says Emery ahead of London derby

Arsenal wants to create new history, says Emery ahead of London derby

Unai Emery wants to create “new history” at Arsenal as they prepare for a first north London derby against Tottenham without Arsene Wenger at the helm.

Arsenal host Spurs on Sunday, with Emery’s side currently three points behind their rivals in the Premier League table.

Wenger’s 22-year reign at Arsenal ended with a derby record of 18 wins, 18 draws and eight losses, with three of those defeats coming against current Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.

But Emery insists every derby is different and believes Arsenal’s management overhaul poses a new challenge for both sides.

“Each match, like this derby, is different. We want to create a new history – it’s a different moment for Tottenham and for us,” Emery told Sky Sports.

“They are going to play for the first time [against] players with us – the coach and all the staff.

“We want to start playing one derby like that, with a good experience. But above all, in the 90 minutes, we [want to] show everybody a good performance and energy.

“I know from living in Spain and France, different matches like this, and I want to feel this match here with our supporters at the Emirates.

“I know it’s going to have a very big atmosphere for us, and we want to win, first as it’s a derby, but also for the three points because in the table we need to continue in our process.”

Emery faces Pochettino for the first time in England, having first met in Spain when the duo were watching now Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa train his Chile side in Valencia.

Emery’s Valencia took on Pochettino’s Espanyol seven times in four seasons from 2009 to 2012, and the pair remain on good terms following their battles in Spain.

“We knew each other at Valencia when we were both looking at Chile training with Marcelo Bielsa,” Emery added.

“I was Valencia [coach], he was finishing his career as a player, and we met for three days looking at this training.

  • UCL: Tottenham can beat Barca to reach knock-out stage – Pochettino

Tottenham believe they can beat Barcelona in the Nou Camp next month to reach the Champions League knockout stage, says boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Christian Eriksen’s goal gave Spurs a 1-0 win over Inter Milan at Wembley on Wednesday to keep their hopes alive.

The Londoners now need to match Inter’s result at home to PSV Eindhoven on 11 December to reach the last 16.

“Barcelona are one of the best teams in Europe and they have unbelievable players,” said Pochettino.

“We have big respect for Barcelona, but we have belief that we can win.”

Barca have not lost at home in the Champions League since 2013.

Spurs knew anything but a win over Inter would see them go out of the competition.

Harry Winks struck the bar and Jan Vertonghen headed wide as Spurs pressed but it took the introduction of Eriksen to make the crucial breakthrough.

The Dane was the beneficiary of good work by Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli to score at the far post with 11 minutes left.

Inter had opportunities, with Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris saving from Ivan Perisic, but the hosts closed out the win and travel to Spain with their destiny in their own hands.
