  • Eriksen strike keeps Tottenham Champions League hopes alive

Christian Eriksen came off the bench to score a late winner for Tottenham against Inter Milan at Wembley and keep alive their hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stage going into their final game at Barcelona.

Spurs needed the win to retain any hope of emerging from Group B into the last 16 and for long spells it looked like their ambitions would flounder on the rock of the Italian side’s resilient defence.

Harry Winks struck the bar and Jan Vertonghen headed wide as Spurs pressed but it took the introduction of Eriksen to make the crucial breakthrough as he was the beneficiary of good work by Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli to score at the far post with 10 minutes left.

Inter had opportunities of their own with Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris saving from Ivan Perisic – but the Premier League side closed out the win and must now match Inter’s result at home to PSV Eindhoven when they travel to the Nou Camp on 11 December to go through.

  • PSG break Tottenham’s 58-year-old European record

Paris St-Germain broke Tottenham’s 58-year-old European record as they beat Lille to make it 12 consecutive wins at the start of the Ligue 1 season.

The previous record for a winning start in Europe’s top five leagues was Spurs’ 11-match run in 1960-61.

Kylian Mbappe scored the first goal with a curled 25-yard effort – his 13th goal in 11 games this season.

Neymar added a second with a deflected shot, with Nicolas Pepe scoring an injury-time consolation penalty.

French champions Paris St-Germain are now 11 points above second-placed Lille at the top of the table.

  • I want to break Messi's records – Harry Kane

Tottenham striker Harry Kane hopes he can one day emulate, and perhaps break, the goalscoring records of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.

Kane, 25, will line up against Messi on Wednesday when Spurs host Barcelona at Wembley in Group B of the Champions League.
“He’s definitely set the standard for the rest of us and it motivates me to get even better,” Kane said.
“Hopefully one day I can score as many, if not more, than he has.”
England captain Kane has been the Premier League’s top scorer for two of the past three seasons and won the Golden Boot at the World Cup in Russia.
His two goals against Huddersfield last weekend put him on 145 for Tottenham, taking him past Jermain Defoe and into fifth place on the club’s top scorers list.
However, he is a long way behind Argentine Messi, who has scored 560 goals in 646 games for Barcelona in all competitions, with 103 of those coming in the Champions League.
“Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have gone above the norm, when they’re scoring 50 or 60 goals a season,” said Kane.
“As players you want to play against the best in the world and Messi is certainly that. We will do our best to stop him.”
Argentina’s Messi currently holds multiple scoring records, including the most goals in a calendar year. He scored 91 goals in 69 games for club and country in 2012.

  • Tottenham thrash Man Utd 3-0 at Old Trafford

Tottenham defeated Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford to pile more pressure on Jose Mourinho whose team now has only one win in three games.

Harry Kane put the visitors ahead at the start of the second half with a precise header.

Lucas Moura’s angled drive doubled their lead two minutes later as United’s defensive weakness were exposed again.

The Brazilian rounded off the scoring late on, skipping past Chris Smalling to plant his shot beyond goalkeeper David de Gea.

Only a fourth league win at Old Trafford in 40 years maintained Tottenham’s 100% record this season and lifted them to second in the table behind Liverpool.

United have lost two consecutive league games and two of their opening three fixtures for the first time since 1992-93.

The hosts did have their chances. In the first half Romelu Lukaku steered an effort wide of an empty goal after rounding keeper Hugo Lloris, who also denied the forward at 1-0.

  • Man Utd v Tottenham preview: Team news, stats

Manchester United welcome Tottenham to Old Trafford on Monday as they look to bounce back from their disappointing defeat at the hands of Brighton last week.

United could welcome back Alexis Sanchez, who was ruled out of the defeat by Brighton because of a groin problem.

Nemanja Matic and Antonio Valencia may also be available after injuries.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino remains without Son Heung-min as he is still on international duty with South Korea at the Asian Games.

Victor Wanyama has returned to training following a knee injury but is not expected to be involved on Monday.

Spurs, on the other hand, have recorded back-to-back victories in the Premier League this season, beating Newcastle United 2-1 away before claiming a 3-1 win over Fulham at Wembley.

    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head

Tottenham’s 21 defeats at Old Trafford is the most by any away team at a single stadium in Premier League history.

Spurs have lost four consecutive league matches away at United without scoring.

    Manchester United

Only in the 1992-93 season have the Red Devils lost more than one of their opening three matches of a Premier League campaign.

A London team has not won away against Manchester United in the Premier League since Spurs’ victory on New Year’s Day 2014. Since then, London clubs have taken just seven points from a possible 66 at Old Trafford.

United’s next Premier League home defeat will be their 50th in the competition at Old Trafford. Thirty one percent of those defeats have happened since Sir Alex Ferguson left as manager.

Since taking over ahead of the 2016-17 season, Jose Mourinho has guided his team to 153 points – 16 fewer than Spurs and 32 less than Manchester City.

    Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino has won 199 matches in all competitions as a manager, including 123 with Tottenham.

Harry Kane has only scored once in eight league games against Manchester United. His solitary goal in 645 minutes in this fixture is his worst Premier League ratio against any of the 26 different teams he has scored against.

Kane has scored 18 goals versus established top-six opposition in the Premier League, which is two more than Romelu Lukaku despite playing 2,008 minutes fewer than the Belgian in those games.

Pochettino has lost 11 competitive fixtures against Jose Mourinho, more than against any other manager.

  • Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris charged with drink-driving

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has been charged with drink-driving after being stopped by police in west London.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper was stopped by a routine patrol in Gloucester Place in the early hours of Friday.

Lloris has been at Spurs since joining from Lyon in 2012, making 256 appearances for the Premier League club.

He captained France as they won the World Cup for the second time in Russia this summer.

The Metropolitan Police said Lloris has been released on bail and is due at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 11 September.

Tottenham have started the Premier League season with a 2-1 win at Newcastle and a 3-1 home victory over Fulham.

Their next match at Manchester United on Monday.

  • EPL: Man Utd must get mad to defeat Tottenham – Pogba

Paul Pogba says Manchester United must stay “mad” to beat Tottenham and atone for Sunday’s Premier League loss at Brighton.

Captain Pogba admitted United’s travelling fans had every right to be furious about his side’s 3-2 loss at the Amex Stadium, where Glenn Murray, Shane Duffy and Pascal Gross struck for the Seagulls.

United found the net through Romelu Lukaku and a late Pogba penalty but Chris Hughton’s Brighton were worthy winners.

Jose Mourinho’s side struggled for urgency and fluency on the south coast, with France star Pogba conceding they face a stern challenge to hit form when hosting Spurs at Old Trafford on August 27.

“We always play for the shirt and the fans, this is not the result we or they wanted,” Pogba told MUTV.

“They should be very mad. We should be mad. Everybody is mad. We are mad.

“The next game we want to change this. We want to be happy at the end of the game, with smiles on their faces and give the fans a nice weekend afterwards.

“We definitely don’t want to lose two games in a row, so we’re going to have to get ready and play much, much better than [on Sunday].

“We’re not here just to play games and be in the Premier League, we are here to win, we are Manchester United, and that’s what we do.

“We want to win trophies, that’s the mentality and the culture of the club. We didn’t do it and we are very disappointed.

“There’s lots of games still and we have to stay positive, and by staying positive is how we will fight for a good result against Tottenham.”

Hughton’s Brighton dismantled a curiously lacklustre United, with target man Murray bullying the visiting defence all afternoon.

The 34-year-old produced a first-time finish for Brighton’s opening goal, his 200th appearance for the club, before defender Duffy tucked home. By the time Gross dispatched his penalty, United were all-but dead and buried before half-time.

Brighton toppled United 1-0 in May and Pogba insisted it is unacceptable for United to make the same mistakes, especially so soon after their previous Amex Stadium humbling.

“That’s twice in a row we have lost against them here,” Pogba added.

“I think that shouldn’t happen. Last year we had almost maybe the same attitude [as Sunday], and it’s not right.

“Myself first, should have done much better, less mistakes, control more the game.

“This was a bad performance for all of us. It’s wrong we dropped points.

“You have to wake up for the next game and definitely not play like we did [against Brighton].”

  • Tottenham’s Son signs new five-year deal

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min has signed a new five-year contract to keep him at the club until 2023.

The South Korea international, 26, agreed a five-year deal when he joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, and has since gone on to score 47 goals in 140 appearances for the London side.

He played in 53 of Spurs’ 55 matches in all competitions last season.

Son scored twice during this summer’s World Cup, including one in South Korea’s shock win over Germany.

In 2017, he became the top Asian scorer in Premier League history, overtaking former Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung.

  • EPL: Spurs defeat Leicester in nine-goal Wembley thriller

Tottenham ended the season by winning a sensational nine-goal thriller against Leicester in their final Premier League game at Wembley.

The hosts trailed 3-1 after 47 minutes, scored three goals in 11 minutes to lead 4-3, only to be pegged back to 4-4 before Harry Kane curled in the winner in the 76th minute.

It was Kane’s second goal of the game, after he levelled following Jamie Vardy’s opener, which takes him to 30 goals for the season for the first time.

Spurs were 2-1 behind at half-time after Riyad Mahrez had added to Vardy’s early header and three minutes after the break Kelechi Iheanacho smashed into the top corner from distance to give Leicester a two-goal lead.

But Spurs responded with three quick-fire goals, two for Erik Lamela and one an own goal from Christian Fuchs.

In a remarkable second half, Vardy then drew Leicester level with his side’s fourth of the afternoon, smashing into the roof of the net after a trademark run in behind the defence.

However it was Vardy’s international team-mate Kane who had the final say with his curling effort.

The win clinches third place for Tottenham in the table while Leicester stay ninth.

  • League leader Man City edge closer to EPL title

Manchester City drew an emphatic line under a difficult week by moving to within one win of the Premier League title with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham.

Gabriel Jesus’ opener and an Ilkay Gundogan penalty moved Pep Guardiola’s men to the brink of the title in a majestic opening 25 minutes at Wembley.

But having withstood Spurs’ second-half rally, Raheem Sterling’s 22nd goal of the season secured the victory which means City can clinch the title at home to Swansea next Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

Man of the Match: Raheem Sterling.

City arrived at Wembley licking their wounds having been dumped out of the Champions League four days after Manchester United dramatically denied them the title.

But there was no sign of self-pity from the champions-elect as they quickly settled into their groove, Leroy Sane rattling the post with a sliced fourth-minute volley.

Sterling, Kevin de Bruyne and Gundogan all had shots on goal before Vincent Kompany’s simple pass exploited Spurs’ high backline, releasing Jesus who clinically finished past the on-rushing Hugo Lloris on 22 minutes.

Things went from bad to worse for Spurs and their captain as Lloris’ reckless lunge on Sterling – which appeared outside of the area – handed City a penalty which Gundogan coolly slotted home.

    Team news

Tottenham made four changes as Kieran Trippier, Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Erik Lamela were recalled. There was also a spot on the bench for 19-year-old Kazaiah Sterling. Vincent Kompany, Ilkay Gundogan and Fabian Delph returned as Manchester City made three changes.

Ben Davies’ horrific 27th-minute tackle on Kompany typified Spurs’ frustrations but there was salvation before the break for the hosts as Aymeric Laporte’s clearance fired into the City goal off Eriksen.

That goal buoyed Spurs after the break but they were unable to convert their new-found vigour into goals, with City continuing to create the clearer chances.

Jesus and Sterling spurned gilt-edged chances to score City’s third but Sterling finally restored their two-goal lead on 72 minutes, converting a rebound from close range after Lloris failed to parry a Jesus shot away from danger.

All Spurs could muster by way of a response was a stoppage-time drive from Lucas Moura as the hosts were left to come to terms with their first league defeat since December 16.
