  • Comeback win at Bournemouth was ‘perfect response’ – Pochettino

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino hailed his side’s “perfect response” to their Champions League upset after they came from behind at Bournemouth to go third in the Premier League.

Spurs, who lost Harry Kane to a first-half ankle injury, recovered from their last-16 defeat by Juventus on Wednesday, to win convincingly through Son Heung-min’s double and Serge Aurier’s late far-post header.

Dele Alli had earlier levelled for the visitors after Junior Stanislas gave Bournemouth a seventh-minute lead.

“The answer today was perfect after Wednesday,” said the Spurs boss. “I am so pleased – the reaction was important for the team.

“They [Bournemouth] played at a high tempo which was difficult. We conceded an early goal but it was a massive three points for us.

“There is still a lot of work to do, still a lot of things can happen with eight games to go. Big sides are fighting with us to take a position in the top four.”

Bournemouth, who remain 12th, thought they had rescued a point via Callum Wilson’s 84th-minute strike but referee Mike Dean disallowed it for a shove on Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez, before the visitors scored their two late goals.

Alli gave Tottenham fans a scare when he was replaced late on, as did left-back Danny Rose, who was making his first top-flight appearance of the year, but both were fatigued rather than injured.

It was Pochettino’s 150th league win as a manager but a rare recent defeat for his counterpart Eddie Howe, whose side had been beaten just once in their past 10 league fixtures – only Tottenham losing fewer in that period.

  • UCL: Tottenham fight back for spirited draw at Juventus

Tottenham produced a brilliant comeback to draw at Juventus after a disastrous start to their Champions League last-16 first leg in Turin.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were 2-0 down inside 10 minutes after Gonzalo Higuain followed up a sumptuous volley with a penalty, awarded for Ben Davies’ foul on Federico Bernardeschi.

Harry Kane started the fightback after rounding Gianluigi Buffon following Deli Alli’s threaded pass and Higuain then missed a penalty for the hosts with the last kick of the first half, following Serge Aurier’s poor challenge on Douglas Costa.

Spurs dominated possession against the Italian champions and got their reward when Christian Eriksen’s low free-kick evaded Buffon to give Spurs the edge going into the second leg at Wembley on 7 March.

Spurs remain unbeaten since 16 December, and Pochettino said: “We are more mature. The team is growing and have stepped up in this aspect. I think the team was amazing in the way they reacted.”

  • Harry Kane header gives Tottenham derby win over Arsenal

Harry Kane was the scourge of Arsenal again as his fine second-half header gave Tottenham a 1-0 victory in the north London derby at Wembley.

Kane’s 101st Premier League goal came from a superb towering header from 10 yards after 49 minutes from Ben Davies’ cross, his seventh goal in seven league games against Arsenal.
Spurs had a flurry of chances to add a second as Kane headed just wide, Christian Eriksen hit the woodwork from a free-kick and both Erik Lamela and Dele Alli spurned one-on-one opportunities.
Alexandre Lacazette missed a fine last-gasp chance for Arsenal, but the result means the Gunners have not beaten Spurs away from home in five attempts. Spurs go up to third, four points behind second-place Man Utd.
During a first half lacking in opportunities, Kane came closest with a free header inside the area, nodding over Petr Cech’s bar, before Spurs came out firing after the break.
Kane made amends for his earlier miss within four minutes, towering above Laurent Koscielny from Davies’ left-wing cross to head superbly into the bottom left corner past Cech.

Kane came close with another header moments later, glancing wide in acres of space, before his fierce volley from 18 yards was beaten away well by Cech.

Spurs were fully on top when Eriksen’s free-kick from the edge hit the bar via the outstretched hand of Cech, while Arsenal created a rare opportunity at the other end as Jack Wilshere’s curling effort from 20 yards forced a fine save from Hugo Lloris.
Alli was put through on goal by Erik Lamela with 20 minutes remaining, but poked inches wide of goal as Cech came rushing out, and Cech then did well to block Lamela’s effort while one-on-one at an acute angle.
The onslaught continued as Cech beat away Kieran Trippier’s half-volley at the far post, and as full-time approached, Lamela dragged an effort wide from an angle after again being found free behind a lacklustre Arsenal defence.
Arsenal did have two last-gasp opportunities, but sub Lacazette first blazed over on the volley from 12 yards, before poking just wide after drifting behind the Spurs defenders.
  • FA CUP: Tottenham cruise into fifth round over League Two side Newport County

Tottenham Hotspur cruised into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over League Two side Newport County at Wembley.

Spurs needed a late Harry Kane goal to rescue a 1-1 draw in the first meeting, but never looked in danger in the replay once Moussa Sissoko’s cross diverted in off Newport’s Dan Butler.

A fine finish from Erik Lamela gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side a comfortable advantage at the interval that they never looked like surrendering.

There are 75 places between Spurs and the Welsh side but there were no scares for the hosts this time around with the gulf in class obvious as the Premier League side strolled through to a fifth-round visit to Rochdale.

Newport showed tremendous resilience to keep the score down, but did not manage a shot on target until the final seconds when Padraig Amond shot straight at Spurs keeper Michel Vorm.

The Premier League side made 10 changes for the match, with Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose returning from injury to start.

Pochettino praised Erik Lamela’s performance who scored his first goal since September 2016.

He said, “It’s important, it’s a very good feeling for him and he is an important player.

  • Harry Kane snatches point at Anfied in a controversial draw

Harry Kane scored an injury-time penalty after missing an earlier one for Tottenham to salvage a 2-2 draw in an extraordinary clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Super Sunday.

Liverpool were leading 1-0 with 12 minutes left after Mohamed Salah’s opener but Victor Wanyama thumped Spurs level before Kane won a penalty on 89 minutes.

However, the England international spurned the opportunity and Salah sensationally put Liverpool in front in injury time with an exquisite solo effort.

That looked the end of the drama but Spurs won a second penalty with their final attack when the linesman overruled referee Jon Moss for a Virgil van Dijk challenge on Erik Lamela.

In front of a disgruntled home crowd, Kane made no mistake to become the player to reach 100 Premier League goals in the second-shortest time.

With just three minutes gone, Liverpool’s high press forced Eric Dier into a horrendous back-pass which was seized upon by Salah, who was presented with an easy finish past Hugo Lloris from 10 yards out.

Tottenham looked rocked by the early goal as Liverpool continued to play with energy through Jordan Henderson and James Milner in midfield – however, the second goal evaded them with Milner and Roberto Firmino skewing shots wide after some creative play by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

After the break Spurs started to find their rhythm and ask questions of Liverpool defensively.

  • Tottenham whipped Man United 2-0 in a PL record, 81,978 fans

Tottenham whipped Man United 2-0 in a PL record, 81,978 fans

Tottenham defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Wembley on Wednesday evening, and did so in front of a Premier League record crowd.

A total of 81,978 fans turned out to see Spurs beat Jose Mourinho’s men by virtue of Christian Eriksen’s early strike and Phil Jones’ own goal.

Spurs also held the previous Premier League record attendance, with 80,827 witnessing their thumping 4-1 win over Liverpool earlier this season.

Eriksen almost set a record of his own with his stunningly early goal, scored after 11 seconds, just two seconds slower than Ledley King’s goal against Bradford.

It was, however, the fastest goal Manchester United have ever conceded in the Premier League.

Spurs are now just five points behind United, who remain second, and are two behind Liverpool and Chelsea in third and fourth respectively.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino was delighted with the performance and result, which kept Spurs firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish.

Meanwhile, Manchester United, Jose Mourinho blasted his team for their shocking start to the game, saying: ‘I don’t think it’s normal to concede a goal like we did after 15 seconds.

  • Kane scores twice as Spurs advance to FA Cup fourth round

Harry Kane scored his first two goals of 2018 as Tottenham advanced to the FA Cup fourth round with a 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon.

The League One side frustrated the hosts for over an hour at Wembley, but their resistance was broken when Kane, surprisingly picked from the start by Mauricio Pochettino, struck twice from close-range in the space of two minutes.

Jan Vertonghen then wrapped up the scoring with a powerful long-range effort which took a slight deflection as it flew past AFC Wimbledon goalkeeper George Long.

Tottenham now take their place in the draw for the next round, but for a long time it seemed they might be taken to replay by the side 58 league places below them.In fact, the visitors were only inches away from taking a shock lead when Jimmy Abdou’s shot was tipped onto the bar by Michel Vorm in the first half.

Before that, the pattern of the game had quickly been set, with Spurs camped in Wimbledon’s half as they attempted to break the visitors down.

Their first real opportunity fell to Erik Lamela, whose powerful volley from the edge of the box was parried by Long in the 18th minute, and soon after that Kane fired wastefully over from a Fernando Llorente knockdown.

  • Kane amongst world’s best, Tottenham boss Pochettino says

Tottenham Hotspur’s manager Mauricio Pochettino has hailed Harry Kane’s achievements, adding that the striker was amongst the best players in the world.

TheNewsGuru reports that Kane toppled Shearer’s 22-year-old record for the most English Premier league goals in a calendar year.

This was after he scored a hat-trick in Tottenham’s 5-2 win over Southampton on Tuesday.

Kane hit a second treble in as many games to complete Tottenham’s five-goal rout, rounding off the year with 39 Premier League goals.

The feat made it 56 strikes in all competitions for Spurs and England.

His second goal of the day had taken him to 55 for club and country in 2017.

This lifted him above FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to become Europe’s top-scorer over the last 12 months in the five major countries (England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France).

The 24-year-old England forward also set an EPL record by scoring six hat-tricks in a calendar year.

He capped another ruthless display in front of goal to complete his treble in the 67th minute, his second in as many games.

Pochettino in his post-match comments noted that it was a fantastic achievement, adding however that kudos must also be given to the team.

“I think I have said everything. His name is there [with the best in the world], it is a fantastic achievement.

“Congratulations to him and to the team because you also need help from the team.

“It does not surprise us because everyday we see how he works, how determined he is and how professional he is. That can only be good for him.

“Professional is a massive word — you need to include everything there inside and he is a good example of that.”

On his hopes for Tottenham in 2018, Pochettino said: “We are ambitious, but I am happy we finished the year in a very good way. For next year? Win — win every game. The mentality is so important for us.”

  • Man City thrash Tottenham 4-1 for 16th consecutive win

Manchester City marched to their 16th successive league win as they thumped Tottenham to extend their Premier League lead to 14 points.

City took the lead when Ilkay Gundogan headed in from Leroy’s Sane’s corner before Kevin de Bruyne smashed home the second after the break.

Raheem Sterling tapped in for 3-0 from Sane’s pass and added his second when he slotted under keeper Hugo Lloris.

Christian Eriksen fired in a consolation for Spurs in stoppage time.

City could have had another but Gabriel Jesus missed a penalty with the score at 2-0.

  • UCL: Gareth Bale set to miss Tottenham reunion

Gareth Bale will not be reunited with Tottenham in the Champions League after missing out on a place in Real Madrid’s travelling squad.

The Wales international is back in training but is not yet fit enough to return to Zinedine Zidane’s team for the Champions League clash against Tottenham at Wembley.

The Los Blancos have named a 19-man party for the midweek clash at Wembley Stadium.

Bale had been hoping to make the cut, allowing him to face his former club, but he has only been able to return to light training ahead of the contest.

Zinedine Zidane has been forced to overlook him as a result, but Isco does make the grade after shaking off a knock which kept him out of training on Monday.
