Stop threatening our traditional ruler, Community warns Simon Ekpa

The Aguleri Community Assembly in Anambra East Local Government Area, has told Simon Ekpa, the Finland-based, self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to stop threatening HRH, Dr Michael Idigo, the traditional ruler of the town.

The Community sent this message at a press conference jointly held by the Aguleri Town Union leadership and Aguleri Royal cabinet at the Palace of Eze Idigo on Wednesday.

The community said Eze Idigo did not at any time visit Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained Leader of IPOB, or spoke to him on the protracted sit-at-home issue in the Southeast and so there was no need for any form of threat by Ekpa.

Chief Ifeanyi iloakasia, President-General Aguleri Community Assembly who spoke on behalf of the Community, said they were taken aback by the threat from  Ekpa on their traditional ruler.

Iloakasia said it was Eze Chukwuemeka Eri, the traditional ruler of Enugwu Aguleri, one of the villages of the larger Aguleri Community, that made the visit and public announcement.

He said “Chukwuemeka Eri had the right in his capacity as ‘Eze Akajiovo’ and as a concerned stakeholder in the Southeast to visit Nnamdi Kanu and make public statements thereon without being subjected to the unwarranted backlash that we have witnessed.

“Aguleri Community Assembly has noted with displeasure and bewilderment, the various comments made by Simon Ekpa and some other members of the IPOB against Igwe Aguleri over his purported meeting with Nnamdi Kanu at Abuja.

“That Igwe Idigo, Ezeudo Aguleri, did not at any time visit Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at Abuja whether alone or in company of anybody.

“That Igwe Idigo, Ezeudo Aguleri, is probably being mistaken for Eze Chukwuemeka Eri, Eze Akajiovo, who visited Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and made public statements thereafter,” he said.

When contacted, Eze Chukwuemeka Eri said he visited Kanu and had received a similar threat but was not fazed by it.

He said he had fruitful discussion with detained Kanu who reiterated his message for an end to the sit-at-home order on Mondays in the Southeast.

Ondo traditional rulers raise alarm over influx of herdsmen

Traditional rulers in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State have raised the alarm over the influx of suspected herdsmen into communities in the area.

The traditional rulers, in a communique issued at the end of the stakeholders’ meeting on Sunday in Ute, said the activities of the herdsmen had been hindering preparation for the planting season in the area.

The traditional rulers are; Olute of Ute, Oba Oluwole Akinrongbe; Olumoru of Imoru, Oba Rotimi Obamuwagun; Arujale Ojima of Okeluse, Oba Oloyede Akinghare and Odibiado of Ijagba, Oba Andrew Okioya.

The traditional rulers, who sent a Save our Soul (SOS) to Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu, said the situation had led to the spike in attacks on farmers, kidnapping, rape and destruction of farmlands in the area.

They noted that the development had attendant implications on food security not only in agrarian communities in the council, but also in the entire state.

They said that farmers who were supposed to mobilise for the new farming season had been driven from farms by armed miscreants who had been mobilising themselves to the area on a daily basis.

The royal fathers, therefore, called on the state government, security agencies to take urgent steps to stem the dangerous tide.

They noted that rate of unprovoked attacks on towns, villages and settlements in the area was becoming “vey scary and highly embarrassing.”

The traditional rulers, who commended the state governor, the Police, Amotekun Corps and other security agencies for tackling insecurity in the state, called for urgent steps to restore peace to the affected communities.

“We passionately appeal that more definite and significant efforts be put in place to ensure more holistic approach to this unending security problems.

According to them, the incessant attacks usually leave in its wake massive destruction of lives, property, rape of married women, teenagers, underage, kidnaping and murder in all the camps, villages, settlements and suburbs like Arimogija.

The traditional rulers said: “These perpetrators destroyed hectares of plantations of plantains, cassava, yams etc at will, harvest such crops and feed their animals with them.

“They perpetrate such atrocities, on the alleged belief that their cows usually give birth to two or three of their kinds at once when they are fed with this crops.

“At regular intervals, they wilfully set fires on cocoa and other farmlands thereby causing poverty, hardship, hunger, sorrow and extreme pains to our people.

“Our entire landscape is agrarian, therefore, our people are basically small and medium scale farmers hence, their livelihood depends on these efforts, now totally annihilated.

“Now, our people live in constant fears and can no longer access their farmlands and places of business because the bandits, terrorists and armed herders have forcefully occupied and taken over our farmlands and forests.”

The royal fathers, however, called for the deployment of more security personnel to the area due to its strategic position and establishment of Forward Operational Base in the area.

The traditional rulers demanded for “creation of standard police divisions, provisions of effective patrol units and proper clearing of the road verges in the area to ensure clear visibility.

Lagos traditional ruler debunks cultism allegation

The traditional ruler of Iba community in Ojo, near Lagos, Oba Adeshina Raji, has debunked allegations that he was aiding and abetting cultism and other criminalities in the area.

Raji denied the allegations in an interview with NAN in Ojo on Friday, while reacting to what he described as baseless allegations that he was behind cult-related crimes in the area.

“My attention has been drawn to a malicious and vicious allegation targeted at denigrating my image and personality.

“I am a traditional ruler with high integrity and I have zero tolerance for nonsense, especially crimes.

Raji said that some unscrupulous people had been trying to tarnish his image, using the social media, noting that he was not connected with a certain person being linked with criminal activities in Iba town.

“I am in no way connected to such a person. I am sure that the social media post is the handwriting of mischief makers and success haters, who are only good at brewing tensions and downgrading fellow humans.

“My hatred for criminality has sustained my initiative to improve security in my community, making me to donate some items such as vehicles to track criminals in Iba community.

“I have also single-handedly built a magistrates’ court in my community which I handed over to the Lagos State Government.

“So, if I am aiding and abetting criminals, would I have done all that? I am a king who loves peace and hates violence.”

Police to invite traditional ruler over audio threatening, intimidating voters

The Police Command in Lagos says a traditional ruler will be invited for questioning over a recorded audio which appeared to threaten and intimidate residents of a community in Eti-Osa area of the state.

Its spokesman, Mr. Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to NAN on Saturday, while reacting to the audio that had gone viral.

“The traditional ruler, a Baale, is to be invited for questioning. Intimidating voters will not be allowed.

“Everyone should feel free to vote the candidate of his or her choice,” Hundeyin said.

A recorded audio of a meeting held on Monday at the instance of the traditional ruler went viral and has attracted the attention of security agencies and civil societies in Lagos State.

In the 11 minutes and 34 seconds audio, the traditional ruler and one other requested the residents and those doing business in the area to vote for a political party in the forthcoming elections.

The traditional ruler, in his voice, wanted to know how many persons at the meeting had their PVCs and only about 20 answered in the affirmative, out of about 60 persons in attendance.

He wondered what happened to the rest who did not have PVCs.

“If we take the number of people here, we will not be less than 60, but only 20 have PVCs; what is happening to the rest?

“We are ready to fight; yes, I am not hiding it; I have narrated everything to you. In Nigeria, there is Lagos; in Lagos, there is Eti-Osa; within Eti-Osa, we have Igbara community and by the grace of God in Igbara today, we can take our decision.

“The people that will be friends with us, that will do business with us are those with PVCs and are willing to vote for our party. Nothing short of that,” he said in the audio.

The traditional ruler further said that if the people intended to vote for other political parties outside the one specified, he wouldn’t stop them from doing so, but that such will only happen “outside Igbara community”.

“You want to vote for other political parties? Not here ! Elections have been coming and going, we have never done this before.”

The traditional ruler was quoted as saying that a lot was at stake, warning that he would not allow the residents to jeopardise his future and the future of his children.

A second voice in the audio is quoted as telling the meeting that only those that will vote for the chosen party would enjoy peace in the area.

The voice even requested them to vote and snap the ballot paper to confirm that they had conformed with the directive to support a particular party.
