Train crash kills nine, injures 47

Nine people were on Thursday killed and nearly 50 injured in Turkey when a high speed train collided with a locomotive and crashed into a station platform and overpass in Ankara, officials said.

Rescuers worked to free people trapped under the mangled wreckage at Marsandiz train station, 8 km (5 miles) from central Ankara.

It was not clear at which speed the train and locomotive were traveling when the collision occurred.

There was light snow on the tracks.

The train had been heading from Ankara to the central Turkish province of Konya and was not due to stop at Marsandiz.

Ankara Governor Vasip Sahin said the locomotive, which lay battered 20 meters (22 yards) further ahead, carried out track inspections.

Three train drivers were among the nine killed in the crash, Transport Minister Cahit Turhan told reporters on the scene.

There were 206 passengers on the high speed train, according to state-owned Anadolu news agency.

The agency also reported that the Ankara state prosecutor’s office had launched an investigation.

Turkey has been developing a network of high-speed rail links during Tayyip Erdogan’s 16-year-old rule as it looks to ease the burden on increasingly congested highways.

  • Lagos-Kano train service resumes Friday – NRC

Lagos-Kano train service resumes Friday – NRC

The Nigerian Railway Corporation said that it would resume the Lagos-Kano Mass Transit Train Services on Friday.

The Deputy Director, NRC Public Relations, Mr Mahmoud Yakub, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Lagos.

Yakub said that the service was delayed because the rail track was washed away by rainfall.

We are starting our service back on Friday, by God’s mercy,” he said.

Also, the Lagos Railway District Manager, Mr Jerry Oche, said the service of the Lagos-Kano was suspended due to washout at Oyun River in Kwara State.

The train which was supposed to come from Kano to Lagos on Sept. 1, was held back due to the washout.

As I speak to you, the train is in Ibadan and it will go back to Kano on Friday.

We have completed the rehabilitation of the track and our train operation will commence on Friday if the strike does not continue,” Oche said.

The RDM, however, apologised to the commuters for the suspension of the services, adding that NRC was working hard to make the train service a world class.

The incident occurred Friday morning at Pen Cinema, Agege, Lagos Mainland.

It was gathered that the three victims were sitting atop the train when it veered upon sighting the bus from afar.

Witnesses said the deceased fell on the rail line and was shredded by the moving train, while the other two fell by the bus, losing some body parts.

The train was said to have continued its journey, oblivious of the casualties.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Adesina Tiamiyu, who was at the scene, said the wreckage of the bus had been removed.

According to him, the Agency received a distress call on Friday morning about 8.57 via the emergency toll-free number that a passenger train collided with a parked commercial bus forcing the three of the hanging passengers to fall off the moving train by crossing at Pen Cinema linking Iju Road.

  • Two dead, 20 injured in train-truck collision

Two people were killed and 20 others injured after a train crashed into a rig truck near the northern Italian city of Turin and derailed, Italian media said Thursday.

The incident occurred late Wednesday when the train hit a large truck that had stopped on a level crossing near the town of Caluso, causing three carriages to come off the rails.

“At 11:20 pm (2120 GMT) the regional train 10027 Turin-Ivrea hit a heavy goods vehicle that had stopped on a functioning level crossing after crashing through the barriers,” RFI, which manages Italy’s rail network, said in a statement.

Local police said there were between 40 and 50 people in the train, which was the last one running from Turin to the suburb of Ivrea.

Media reports said four of the injured were in serious condition.

“According to early information, the driver of the train was killed and many other passengers have been injured,” the statement added.

The AGI news agency said the second victim was taken to a Turin hospital by helicopter with severe injuries but he did not survive.

At the time of the accident he was in a van accompanying the heavy goods vehicle, other media reported.

Italy’s rail operator expressed condolences over the engineer’s death and extended sympathy for the injured and their near ones.

According to La Stampa newspaper, eyewitnesses said the vehicle, which was registered in Lithuania, was a particularly large and heavy truck. Media reports said it was headed for a warehouse nearby.

The van that was in front of it passed safely through the level crossing but when the barriers started coming down, the rig failed to brake in time and came to a stop on the tracks, the newspaper said.

Many others have been hospitalised, including four who are in a serious condition, local media reported.

AGI said one passenger, a woman, was in a serious condition after sustaining a head injury but she remains conscious.

Another survivor, Paolo Malgioglio, 23, told the Corriere della Sera newspaper: “Everything happened so fast, I felt the train brake suddenly and then I found myself in hell and around me everything was black.”

The tragedy follows another accident in April 2017 in the north that killed two people and resulted in the temporary closure of the main railway line between Italy and Austria.

In July 2016 a collision between two trains in the south of Italy left 23 people dead and 52 others injured.

  • Thai woman dies after being hit by train while taking selfie

A Thai woman died after being hit by a train while taking a selfie on the railway track, police said on Friday.

“Walailak Sukuma, 28, was proclaimed dead at a Bangkok hospital hours after an oncoming train hit her and her friend while the pair was taking a selfie, Wissanusak Suebin,’’ a police investigator in charge of the case, told newsmen.

Wissanusak said Walailak’s right leg was cut off by the train’s wheels, while her friend, 24-year-old Amnaj Nawantip, suffered a head injury and a broken arm.

The pair was part of a group of five friends who had been drinking beer at a railway station in Bangkok.

According to railway officials, the group often hung out drinking beer near the rail tracks.

“The difference is that this time they were taking selfies too.

“Their friends said they didn’t see the train approaching the platform.

“The group said they have learnt their lesson now, but it remains to be seen if they will come back in the future,’’ Wissanusak added.

  • FG to increase Abuja-Kaduna train fare – Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, says the Federal Government may increase the transport fares of the rail services on the Abuja-Kaduna route following the inauguration of 10 new luxurious coaches.

Mr. Ameachi announced this when he fielded questions from State House correspondents after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.

According to him, already, commuters have agreed that the cost of transportation to Kaduna via the rail service is a bit too cheap.

The Minister, who said he discussed the inauguration of the 10 new coaches and two locomotives with the President, revealed that the new coaches would be inaugurated on Thursday.

The president is pleased with the arrangement because basically we will then be able to discharge the passengers pressure that we have had; that is why you have ticket racketeering.

When demand outstrips supply then you see all sorts of attempts to cheat the passengers.

There are two things I know the president likes. I have mentioned one, the second one is after commissioning even the passengers agree that the cost of transportation to Kaduna via the railway is a bit too cheap.

So there will be a need to increase the price and then there will be more comfort.

More comfort in the sense that when you have excess seats multiplied by the number of passengers that will come, then anybody that wants to racketeer will have to eat the tickets himself,’’ he added.

He stated that the new coaches, when inaugurated, would bring the total number of coaches to 14 on the Kaduna-Abuja route.

According to the minister, one of the locomotives will be dedicated to direct trip from Kaduna to Abuja non-stop (that should be doing 1hr:15 or 1hr:20 minutes non-stop).

He said this would enable those “living in Kaduna and working in Abuja to actually come to work on time. If you leave at 6.00a.m by 7:15a.m, 7:20a.m you should be in Abuja.’’

  • 56 injured in Barcelona train crash

At least 56 people were injured when a train crashed as it was entering a central station in Barcelona during the morning rush on Friday, the Regional Emergency Officials said.

The regional commuter train was travelling from the ocean-side village of Sant Vicenc de Calders to the north-eastern Spanish city.

The train derailed as it made its way into the Franca station, located near the Catalonia regional parliament building in Barcelona.

Officials said 19 people were taken to hospital while the rest were treated on the platform by paramedics.

They said several people bled with wounds on their heads and falling over one another as the train careened off its rails.

Transport Minister Inigo de la Serna and Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau visited the scene along with other politicians.

The Railway Company and police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Initial findings showed the 31-year-old train driver, who escaped with minor injuries but was said to be in a state of shock, was not going at an excessive speed.

He had seven years’ experience on the job.

  • Video: German inspectors forcefully drag Nigerian man out of train

Inspectors of the S-Bahn Munich in Germany pulled a 48-year-old Nigerian from the train by force. The two ticket inspectors of the Deutsche Bahn German train system were caught on camera savagely dragging the Nigerian man out of a train after he reportedly refused to provide his ID and pay a fine for not having a ticket.

The man could be seen vehemently clinging on metal handrails, as two men in uniform ferociously battle to get him out of the suburban S-Bahn train, headed to Munich city center from the airport.

Natalia Miletic who filmed the incident and posted it on Facebook, can be heard telling the inspectors:

“It’s absolutely not OK what you’re doing, the guy didn’t do anything to you.”“You should be ashamed of yourself, this is racism what you’re doing,”. “Why are you doing this? He paid.”

The woman continues filming until someone seemingly tries to stop her.

The man, said to be a 48-year-old Nigerian, was reportedly removed from the train at Leuchtenbergring station.

He appeared to have no valid ticket as the inspectors came up to him during the check. They then asked him to show an ID card and pay a €60 fine ($68), according to the witness who filmed the incident and later described it to HuffingtonPost.de.

The man, however, only had €9 in cash, which he reportedly needed for food. The inspectors collected the €9, saying he still owed the rest.

Deutsche Bahn, the company operating trains in Germany, said it was “unusual to receive only partial payments,” commenting on the incident later.
