Why we increased fares for Warri-Itakpe train service – FG

The federal government (FG), while asking for understanding, has explained why it recently increased fares for the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the explanation is coming on the heels of a report published by this medium in which users of the WITS expressed grave displeasure in using the train service.

Users of the train service had lamented the recent increase in the cost of using the WITS and analysed it against the inconveniences that come along with using the service.

Recall that the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in August hiked the cost of travelling along the WITS routes.

Findings by TNG reveals that the cost of train from Itakpe to Ujevwu in Warri, which started at N1,900.00 has been increased to N2200, and more recently to N3,000.00.

TNG reports NRC hike in fare also affected passengers who usually travelled from Itakpe to Uromi at the cost of N1050 but now being made to cough out N1600.

While fares for other stops within the route were also affected, the FG has explained that the increase in fares is due to the cost of running the rail.

Dr Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, who gave the explanation on Friday, assured that with time, the fares will come down.

Responding to complaints by some passengers as she was inspecting facilities at Agenebode rail station in Edo State, Dr Ajani appealed to users of the WITS to bear with the government, saying the projects were procured through loans.

She said that the government was not running to make any gain but to maintain the facilities and pay back the loans.

“I am assuring you that with time, things will come down, the increase in fares is due to the cost of running the rail.

”Government will address all these challenges, which is the aim of this inspection to ensure passengers are comfortable,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mr Kingsley John, a passenger, who appreciated the FG for its efforts to revamp the rail sector, appealed to the government to ensure the sustainability of the projects across the country.

Another passenger Mrs Elizabeth Mathew, said she was worried over the sudden increase in the fare from N1,000, which was paid before to N2,000 and N3,000, from Kogi to Delta.

“It is worrisome on the sudden increase in the transport fare, I want government to please consider that the rail initiative is meant to ease transportation fare for Nigerians,” she said.

Earlier, one aggrieved passenger, Mrs Ijeoma Okonkwo, a nursing mother, had compared the rising cost and inconveniences of using the WITS to travelling with God is Good (GIG) motors, and said passengers might be forced to revert to road transport or other means to travel to Warri if the challenges were not addressed.

“With the recent increase in train fare, if NRC continues to increase fare, gradually the Warri-Itakpe Train Service will start to lose customers and by extension, revenue. This is why.

“God is Good to Warri from Utako, Abuja is N12,000.00 or thereabout. Meanwhile, transporters are taking advantage of the patronage to increase the fare to get to Itakpe so much that to get to Itakpe before you board the train is now about N4,000.00.

“The train fare has been increased to N5,000.00 for first class (FC) and N3,000.00 for standard class (SC); add the inconveniences of getting to Itakpe from Abuja, while you can just conveniently get to Utako to board GIG.

“In addition, granted the WITS now operates a double schedule, there is no way passengers can meet up with the 8 am schedule travelling from Abuja. This means travelling at 2:45 pm, passengers get to Warri late, when they can get to Warri earlier using GIG. Not to add the inconveniences and cost of leaving Agbarho or Ujevwu to PTI Junction or Effurun Roundabout.

“More also, returning to Abuja from Warri, transporters at Itakpe have increased fare from there to Jabi. Sometimes, you pay as high as N4,000.00 to get to Jabi. The increase in fare by NRC and transporters will degrade the use of the WITS.

“For the WITS to continue to stay relevant, the government must put one and two together before ever considering increasing fare for the WITS.

“Also, the government should consider linking the WITS to the federal capital territory (FCT) to remove the inconveniences of having to travel to Itakpe before using this service.

“If not, the WITS will start to lose passengers and by extension, revenue,” Mrs Okonkwo said.

TNG reports Ajani was accompanied during the inspection tour by a team of officials from the Ministry of Transportation.

The team visited other rail stations, including Agbor in Delta, Igbanke, Ekenhe, Uromi, Itogbo in Edo and Itakpe and Ajaokuta stations in Kogi.

Some of the challenges at some rail stations included lack of boreholes to supply water, lack of office furniture, electricity, lack of chairs for the passengers and no permanent police post, among others.

Why we may stop using Warri-Itakpe train service – Travellers

Hundreds of passengers who travel with the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) have expressed displeasure in using the train service and said they might be forced to stop using the service.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the travellers lamented the recent increase in cost of using the WITS and analysed the inconveniences of using the service against the rising cost of using the service.

Meanwhile, the NRC had said the rail sector of the transportation industry generates an average of N327 million monthly.

The Managing Director of NRC, Fidet Okhiria, who made this known, said the WITS, which began commercial operations on October 9, 2020 generates an average of N45 million.

Okhiria said the Abuja-Kaduna route generates an average of N265 million, while the Lagos-Ibadan generates N17 million.

The Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri runs from the southern oil hub of Warri near the Atlantic coast northwards into the major iron ore producing region in Kogi.

The single-track project, built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari alongside the ancillary facilities yard at the recently named Goodluck Jonathan Railway Complex in Agbor, Delta.

The rail sector of the transportation industry generates an average of N327 million monthly, Managing Director of Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Fidet Okhiria has said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the NRC Managing Director made this known in Abuja on Thursday.

Okhiria said the Abuja-Kaduna route generated an average of N265 million; Lagos-Ibadan, N17 million; while Warri-Itakpe generated N45 million.

The standard gauge Lagos-Ibadan route was inaugurated for commercial activities on June 21, 2020. It covers 157 kilometres.

The 326km Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri began operations on Oct. 9, 2020. It runs from the southern oil hub of Warri near the Atlantic coast northwards into the major iron ore producing region in Kogi.

The single-track project, built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari alongside the ancillary facilities yard at the recently named Goodluck Jonathan Railway Complex in Agbor, Delta.

The Lagos-Ibadan train service conveys passengers, while the Warri-Itakpe route is for freight haulage.

Okhiria said with the introduction of an additional Diesel Multiple Unit, the corporation had increased the number of train trips between Abuja and Kaduna from eight to 10 per day.

He added that for Wednesdays, trips on that route had been increased from four to six.

He expressed confidence that this would go a long way to accommodate the increasing number of passengers.

Train Breakdown: Railway vandals steal train parts frequently, Amaechi laments

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has lamented that train vandals frequently steal railway clips which leads to huge losses for the federal government.

He said this on Friday at the ministerial media briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister at the briefing proposed that vandals caught stealing railway facilities should be charged with manslaughter.

Amaechi noted that stringent laws will curb the menace, which he says could cause train derailment and killing unsuspecting passengers.

The former Rivers governor also revealed that Nigeria and China have signed a contract to manufacture train coaches locally in the country following an initial five-year period of just the local assembling of the components.

He also revealed that an agreement has been signed for the Chinese to build a rail component manufacturing factory in Kajola, Ogun State due to be commissioned this year and as well, a University in Daura, Katsina State to help localise railway technology.

The minister said the Kaduna-Kano railway project will be flagged off in two weeks just as he affirmed that the Lekki deep seaport will be completed before the end of the present administration.

Nigeria shops for new lenders for Ibadan-Kano rail, dumps China offer

The Federal Government is shopping for new loans to finance its Ibadan-Kano rail project which will cost about $11 billion.

The earlier impression was that China would provide the loans.

This was the assumption, especially since the China Civil Engineering Construction Corp (CCECC) has been contracted to construct the line, along with refurbishing the old Port Harcourt-Maiduguri narrow gauge.

But in Lagos at the flag-off of the Lagos-Ibadan segment of the Lagos-Kano line, President Buhari clearly hinted that his government is shopping for financing elsewhere.

Buhari said that the Federal Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Finance have been directed to vigorously seek financial agreements with appropriate co-financiers to partner with the Federal Government for the development of the Ibadan – Kano railway.

In an interview, Transport minister Rotimi Amaechi disclosed that government is discussing with the London-based Standard Chartered Bank Plc.

Unlike Buhari, he said government is shopping for funds for two rail line projects expected to cost about $14.4 billion.

Included is the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri narrow gauge line, which has been awarded to CCECC at a cost of $3billion.

“We’ve moved away from China in some of our projects. Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed is overseeing the talks with the emerging markets-focused financial institution about arranging the infrastructure loans,’’ Amaechi said.

In March, Amaechi disclosed that Nigeria borrowed about $2.5billion from China-Exim Bank for the Lagos-Ibadan rail.

Train collides with truck in Lagos

A train accident occurred on Monday along the Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos State involving a truck carrying animal feeds.

According eyewitnesses that the truck did not clear off the rail track completely which led to the train brushing it off from the rear.

Although no causality was recorded, the accident led to vehicular traffic in the area.

Rescue officials and security operatives have swung to action, by pulling the truck off the track for easy passage.

The officials also explained that the truck was on one-way when the accident occurred.

“Stakeholders are here from the Federal Fire Service, LASTMA, LASEMA, and others are all on the ground. The truck that will remove the trailer from the track is already on the ground.

“We are attempting to remove its content- the animal feed – so that it will be easy for it to be removed from the track,” Wale Adedokun, Search and Rescue Officer, Lagos Territorial Office explained.

Ighalo trains in public park ahead of EPL June restart

Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo maintained his fitness levels ahead of a possible restart to the season by training in a Cheshire park on Monday.

The Nigerian striker, dressed in United training gear, was pictured doing sprint drills on the grass in readiness for a potential resumption of the Premier League next month.

Under the Premier League’s Project Restart proposals, players will return to full training later this month with a view to restarting matches behind closed doors at neutral venues from June 12.

And Ighalo, who scored four goals in eight matches for United before the season was suspended, is clearly determined to hit the ground running.

However, United’s efforts to keep Ighalo have been thrown into doubt after his parent club in China, Shanghai Shenhua, demanded a permanent transfer worth in excess of £20million.

Ighalo’s loan to Old Trafford technically expires on May 31 but United are keen to extend it so he can continue playing for them once the season resumes.

However, Shanghai want their player back in time for the start of the Chinese Super League campaign, which begins in July, and will only allow him to stay if a permanent deal can be agreed.

Ighalo was valued at £15m when he first arrived on deadline day in January for a loan fee of £3m, and United were ready to pay it.

But after making such a strong initial impression, Shanghai are demanding more for the 30-year-old former Watford striker.

United were waiting to see when the Premier League will restart before opening talks because they have been paying £130,000-a-week of Ighalo’s salary during the two-month shutdown.

But they appear to be preparing for the possibility that he will leave, with club sources highlighting Marcus Rashford’s return to fitness from a back injury as the main reason Ighalo was signed as a stop-gap in the first place.

Video: See Massive multiple-unit that will revolutionise Nigeria’s transportation system

The Nigerian transportation system is about to witness a historic turnaround especially with the massive nationwide infrastructure delivery under the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

Sooner than expected, the noisy, rickety trains will give way to technologically advanced light rails with the exclusive right-of-way.

Adding another feather to the cap of its achievements, the minsitry of transportation under Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi recently commenced test running some of newly acquired rails but was later suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has now kept the entire country almost on a lockdown mode.

If the video exclusively obtained by TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) from a top official of the transport ministry is anything to go by, then Nigerians are in for a good treat once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

According to the official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the ministry opted for a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) with ten coaches. ‘Each coach can lift as many as 88 sitting passengers. It’s already acquired and been test run on the Lagos-Ibadan corridor by the ministry. The one for Kaduna to Abuja was about to leave the seaport before coronavirus broke out,’ the official said.

TNG reports that a diesel multiple unit or DMU is a multiple-unit train powered by on-board diesel engines. A DMU requires no separate locomotive, as the engines are incorporated into one or more of the carriages. Diesel-powered single-unit railcars are also generally classed as DMUs.
