Sacked Edo Sports Council workers prevent Falconets from training

Sacked workers of the now-defunct Edo Sports Council on Friday prevented the national under-20 female football team from training at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin city.

Falconets will take on their Senegalese counterparts in an U-20 Women World Cup qualifiers on Saturday.

Christopher Danjuma, coach of the Nigerian team, told NAN on Thursday that the team would have their training at the Stadium this morning (Friday)

The aggrieved workers, who barricaded roads leading to the Stadium as well as the Stadium gate, were protesting their sack by the Edo state government on Wednesday.

The disengaged workers had laid siege at the Stadium since Wednesday when the news of their sack was officially announced to them.

The Falconets, who arrived in Benin City on Wednesday, had their first training at Best Western Secondary School in Benin City on Thursday.

A source who pleaded anonymity said that officials of the state government and representatives of the Sacked workers were in a meeting to address the matter.

Meanwhile, the Senegalese under-20 female football team arrived at Benin Airport Friday morning for the second leg match of the qualifiers.

The team who lost to the Falconets 3-1 in Senegal, landed at the airport, at 8 a.m. via an Air Peace flight en route Abuja.

The Senegalese contingent was received at the airport by the Permanent Secretary, Edo Sports Commission, Sabina Chikere.

  • Robert Lewandowski quits Bayern Munich training

Robert Lewandowski quits Bayern Munich training

Bayern Munich suffered a scare around their star striker Robert Lewandowski on Tuesday when he had to abandon training after slipping while attempting a shot.

World Footballer of the Year Lewandowski left the public session prematurely for medical examinations after the incident.

“I didn’t hit the ball cleanly and it hurts a bit,” Lewandowski said amid reports of a knee problem.

Bayern Munich later spoke of “a small injury” without disclosing any details in a club statement.

The Bundesliga champions will not want to be without their top goalscorer in the deciding weeks of the season.

Bayern Munich have reached the quarter-finals of the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League, with the draw slated for Friday, and which will be played April 5/April 6 and April 12/April 13.

They went out at this stage last year against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) when Lewandowski was sidelined with injury.

Bayern Munich are top of the Bundesliga but their lead could be reduced to four points by Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

They play on Saturday against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, followed by an international break — where Poland’s Lewandowski has no game — before an April 2 date at Freiburg.

But there was also good news at the Bayern Munich camp as key midfielder Leon Goretzka returned to team training from a knee injury.

It is an injury which has seen him out of action for more than three months.

Corentin Tolisso was also back from an injury sustained last month.

“It went well and it was fun. Of course I’m excited to take the next steps now,” Goretzka said. “It’s extremely liberating. I hope I can come back better now.”

  • UNICEF to train 45,000 teachers in Nigeria

UNICEF to train 45,000 teachers in Nigeria

ABUJA– IN its drive to upgrade the standard of teaching in the nation’s schools in line with modern teaching realities, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, has begun a partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, to train teachers across the country.

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of TRCN, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, who addressed a media conference to this effect, Thursday, in Abuja, said his organisation with the assistance of the United Nations humanitarian agency will train a total of 45,000 teachers across 24 states of Nigeria on digital literacy.

The disclosure came as Ajiboye hinted of his plans to move against teachers in private schools across the country for being unqualified to be in classrooms.

According to him, a high percentage of teachers in private schools across the country had been found to be incompetent to teach.

“There are no qualified teachers in private schools, teachers in private schools are not teachers. They did not register with us”, he said.

The programme,he disclosed, would be in batches, beginning with 30,000 teachers in the first instance, from 16 states.

According to him, “The 16 focal states are Benue, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina, Plateau, Taraba and Zamfara and four others.”

He said the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu had “graciously extended” the programme to eight more states of Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Lagos, Osun, Oyo, and Rivers, upon completion of the circle of 16 states.

The overall objectives of the training, he explained, included the bridging of the gap created by the outbreak of the pandemic that severely affected the education system of the country.

“He explained further that the programme was aimed at providing “capacity development opportunities to teachers and school leaders in the deployment of technology in classrooms, distance learning methods using both online and offline to continue learning.”

“Again, it is to train teachers and school leaders in emergency preparedness and response to provide safe school practice including COVID-19 and build resilience in learners against future shocks,” he further said.

Arsenal out of favour Aubameyang trains with Barca for first time

Former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is already down to work at Barcelona.

Aubameyang trained with his new teammates for the first time on Tuesday.

Aubameyang met his new teammates on Tuesday. He presented himself one by one to each member of the squad, although such formalities were not necessary with Ousmane Dembele. The two have maintained a good relationship since they spent time at Borussia Dortmund together. They were barely apart during the session.

The former Arsenal forward trained at the same rhythm as his teammates despite various weeks out of not seeing action. His training was lauded especially after having to leave the Gabon camp at the African Cup of Nations in a hurry due to ill health.

Barça were expected to make the announcement official on Tuesday evening. He is likely to take the No.25 shirt and everything indicates he will have a contract until 2023.

Man Utd boost as Paul Pogba returns to training

France international Paul Pogba was back in full-scale training at Manchester United on Monday.

The Mirror reports interim manager Ralf Rangnick claimed just 10 days ago that the 28-year-old would not be available until well into February, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s Instagram post has revealed that Pogba is back early.

The midfielder has been out of his action since November, when he suffered a muscle injury whilst training with France.

Yet to make an appearance under Rangnick, Pogba could potentially make his return when the Red Devils travel to Brentford on Wednesday or host West Ham on Saturday.

On Monday afternoon, Ronaldo posted a picture of United’s winning team in training.

It contained the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Tom Heaton, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Donny van de Beek, Marcus Rashford and, surprisingly, Pogba.

  • NITDA invites PLWDs from South South for digital skills training

NITDA invites PLWDs from South South for digital skills training

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has invited Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) from the South-South for a five-day training on digital skills and entrepreneurship.

This is contained in a statement by the agency’s Corporate Affairs and External Relations Head, Mrs Hadiza Umar, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Umar said the training was in line with the actualisation of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) mandate of attaining 95 per cent digital literacy by 2030.

She said the programme was the combination of execution of two initiatives from the seven NITDA’s Strategic RoadMap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2021-2024 – Digital Transformation, and Digital Literacy and Skills.

“Digital transformation enables the facilitation of digital inclusion programmes for PLWDs and other digitally excluded people aimed at increasing the level of digitisation and digitalisation across both public and private sectors.

“Digital literacy and skills is focused on massive training of Nigerians from all works of life to increase the rate of digital literacy and skills among Nigerians and create a pool of global competitive human capital towards the drive of digital transformation in the public and private sector.

“The two pillars promote the creation of capacity building schemes for digital entrepreneurship,’’ she said.

According to her, the capacity building programme will take place in Port Harcourt.

“Interested participants should indicate by filling the application form on http://plwd.nitda.gov.ng, beginning from 10 a.m. on Tuesday January 11, 2022, and close by midnight of Tuesday 18th January 2022,’’ Umar advised.

  • Christian Eriksen resumes training despite Serie A ban

Christian Eriksen resumes training despite Serie A ban

Inter Milan’s Christian Eriksen has started training alone at the Danish club he represented as a teenager as he continues his recovery from suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.

The midfielder, 29, collapsed on the pitch when playing for Denmark in June.

The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) device he subsequently had fitted means he is banned from playing in Italy’s Serie A.

Denmark’s Odense Boldklub (OB) said Eriksen was using their facilities.

“Eriksen reached out to us, and he is now training by himself,” said a spokesperson for OB.

“It’s natural for him since he played here in his youth and lives around the corner. We are very happy to be able to provide training facilities for him.”

Eriksen represented OB from 2005 to 2008 before joining Dutch side Ajax.

After seven years with Tottenham he joined Inter in 2020. The Italian champions have said they are prepared to let him leave the club after the country’s medical authority suspended him from playing in Serie A.

Conte explains Del Piero presence at Tottenham training

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has explained the visit of Alessandro del Piero to training yesterday.

A friend of Conte’s, visited the Tottenham training ground while in London.

“Alessandro came here to visit us,” Conte said. “He was in London as a guest for Sky, for the game Chelsea-Juventus. It was good to see him. We played together. We won together. It was good to see him after a long time.”

Harry Kane was eager to be introduced to the Italian legend.

Conte added: “We are talking about two world class strikers. It was good for Harry to see Alessandro.”

  • Lukaku returns to Chelsea training ahead of schedule

Lukaku returns to Chelsea training ahead of schedule

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku took part in the club training on Monday.

The Belgian striker has missed the last three Premier League games after suffering an ankle injury during the Champions League win over Malmo earlier this month.

While, in his absence, Thomas Tuchel’s side have managed to score eleven times in three Premier League outings, their lack of a goalscorer did play a factor in their draw at home to Burnley before the international break, with the league-leaders missing a number of chances before conceding a late equaliser.

On Monday afternoon, the club posted a photo of Lukaku back out on the training pitch.

Returning to the club earlier this summer, the 28-year-old has scored four times in ten games and his return to the side, even if not necessarily fit to start right away, is a major boost to a team already three points clear as things stand.

Tottenham players told to expect Conte at training today

Tottenham expect Antonio Conte to take training today.

The Daily Mail says Conte will be confirmed as new Tottenham manager later today.

It is understood Conte, who has a long-term relationship with Paratici, has agreed an 18 month contract with a pro-rata salary of around £13million.

Sources claimed on Monday that Tottenham were exploring the possibility inserting a 12-month extension option into the deal.

There was growing optimism at Tottenham on Monday afternoon that Conte would be their next manager, with one well-placed insisting the deal was as good as done.

Indeed, players were told to expect the new manager to be in situ to take this morning’s training session at the club’s Enfield HQ.

And his arrival was rubber-stamped late on Monday night.
